Penn State is bowl eligible, but where will Nittany Lions be bowling?

Penn State is now bowl eligible, and a trip to Nashville is a pretty trendy prediction entering Week 11

With their win against Maryland on Saturday, Penn State officially became bowl eligible. After opting to stay home for the bowl season at the end of the pandemic-ridden 2020 season, it is likely the Nittany Lions will return to the bowl season in the 2021 season. But with three games still to be played, Penn State’s bowl trajectory could still be considered flexible.

A quick glance at some of the updated bowl projections following Week 10 are suggesting Penn State is lining up to play in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tennessee against an SEC opponent. It may not be the most glorious bowl destination that Penn State fans were envisioning a month ago, but Nashville could end up being a pretty fun trip, especially if the Nittany Lions are paired up with a program like Arkansas or Ole Miss, as projections from various outlets are currently forecasting.

Kyle Bonagura of ESPN has Penn State taking on Arkansas in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30. Bonagura is not alone in that prediction. Jerry Palm of CBS Sports also has Penn State facing the Razorbacks in Nashville. Brad Crawford of 247 Sports also has Penn State playing in the Music City Bowl, although Crawford has Lane Kiffin, Matt Corral and the Ole Miss Rebels representing the SEC in the game instead of Arkansas. Watching Penn State’s defense against the Ole Miss offense would be a fascinating battle, but the game could easily turn into a bit of a shootout.

ESPN’s other bowl prognosticator, Mark Schlabach, has Penn State heading to a different bowl game, one that is familiar to James Franklin and the Nittany Lions. Schlabach has Penn State heading to the Pinstripe Bowl to take on Virginia on Dec. 29.

[listicle id=246]

There is still hope for Penn State playing in a New Years Day bowl game, although not a New Years Six bowl game. Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports has Penn State heading to the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1 to face off with former Penn State quarterback Will Levis and the Kentucky Wildcats.

Penn State still has three games left to play in the regular season, and picking up wins in the final three games would dramatically change Penn State’s bowl outlook. Wins in the last three games would include wins against Michigan and Michigan State, which would likely see Penn State rocket back up the rankings despite having three losses. But winning out would move Penn State up the Big Ten bowl pecking order.

Of course, going 3-0 in the final three weeks will be easier said than done. Penn State is a small favorite at home against Michigan in Week 11 and a road trip to Michigan State in the final week of the regular season will not be easy.

Wisconsin football faces Arkansas in the latest USA TODAY bowl projections

Wisconsin faces yet another SEC opponent in the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections:

The Wisconsin Badgers were able to handle the Purdue Boilermakers in a 30-13 victory last Saturday; however, the Badgers are still predicted to play in the Music City Bowl by the latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections.

Last week, Wisconsin was projected to play against the Florida Gators in the Music City Bowl, but are now predicted to play against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Badgers have played the Razorbacks twice in their programs’ histories in 2007 and 1912. Both games were victories for Wisconsin.

The projected College Football Playoff teams for this week are unchanged and remain Oklahoma, Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama.

The Badgers will be going up against one of their toughest tests of the season on Saturday when they face off against the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes. A win for Wisconsin is crucial in their chances for the Big Ten West title and a shot at the Big Ten Championship game.

Wisconsin faces another SEC foe in latest USA TODAY Bowl Projections

The Wisconsin Badgers face another SEC opponent in the USA TODAY Sports bowl projections:

The latest USA TODAY Sports bowl projections once again predicted the Wisconsin Badgers to play in the Music City Bowl. However, the Badgers are now predicted to play against the Florida Gators instead of last week’s projection of the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Badgers have played in only one Music City Bowl, which they lost to the Auburn Tigers in 2003. Wisconsin has never faced the Florida Gators before so this matchup would definitely be a historic and exciting bowl game to see.

The College Football Playoff teams for this week include Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma and Ohio State.

Wisconsin will be going on the road this weekend against a very talented Purdue team that just upset the Iowa Hawkeyes, so it will be important for Graham Mertz and the offense to get in sync to match the scoring of the Boilermakers.

Bowl game projections: Where LSU and the SEC are slated to play

A look at where USA TODAY Sports is projecting the SEC for bowl season.

Time for the weekly update on bowl projections for the LSU Tigers and the SEC.

The LSU Tigers currently sit at 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in SEC play. This week they take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday night in Death Valley. A game that will help decide the SEC West race behind Alabama. The other huge matchup involves the Tide as they take on Ole Miss.

The Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators in the East are vying for the top spot to challenge the Tide in the SEC title game. They have a monster matchup coming.

Wisconsin drops in latest USA TODAY bowl projections

After a blowout loss to Notre Dame, the Badgers now play another SEC opponent in the latest USA TODAY bowl projections:

After a blowout loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers are now predicted to play the LSU Tigers in the Music City Bowl by the latest bowl projections from USA TODAY.

Wisconsin has only played in one other Music City Bowl, back in 2003, where the Badgers lost 28-14 against the Auburn Tigers. Against LSU, the Badgers are 1-1 with Wisconsin’s victory occurring in their last matchup in 2016 at historic Lambeau Field.

The projected College Football Playoff teams for this week have changed because of Oklahoma‘s recent struggles, and they now include Alabama, Iowa, Georgia and Oregon.

Wisconsin will be facing a tough task in their opponent Michigan this weekend, but if they could pull out a victory, the Badgers could see their bowl projections improve for next week.

Let’s go bowling: Latest bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports

The latest bowl projections have the LSU Tigers projected into two different bowl games.

Time to go bowling. Three different media outlets project two different bowl games. Both of which would be lower-tier games, can the Tigers start trending upwards?

Erick Smith of USA TODAY Sports is back with his weekly bowl game projections. The LSU Tigers were recently projected to the Outback Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines but after week two’s slate of games that has changed. The Bayou Bengals are projected to go to the Music City Bowl game against a Michigan foe.

These two teams met once before in bowl season, a 1995 matchup in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Tigers won that game 45-26. LSU could look to make it 2-0 this season if the projection holds true.

Indiana Hoosiers vs LSU Tigers

Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

This would be the first postseason game in the series history between these two schools. The last game was played in Baton Rouge, back in 1978. The Tigers won 24-17. The other two games took place in Indiana. Once in Indianapolis in 1924, LSU won that game 20-14. They wouldn’t play for another 50 years when the Hoosiers won 24-21 in Bloomington during the 1977 season.

ESPN projects a Lone Star Bowl Game

Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach have their weekly projections (subscription required) and both have the Tigers playing in Houston. The Bowl tie-in has the Big 12 vs the SEC. LSU played Texas Tech in the Texas Bowl in 2015.

Bonagura: Baylor vs LSU

This would be an interesting game for a couple of reasons. Former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda is the head coach of Baylor. Plus a former player, Siaki Ika transferred to play for his former defensive coordinator. LSU leads the all-time series 8-3. They haven’t met since 1985 when the Bears defeated the Tigers 21-7 in the Liberty Bowl.

Schlabach: Oklahoma State vs LSU

The battle of the “State’s” so to speak. Oklahoma State and LSU have met just once in their history. That game was a 13-0 shutout for the Tigers in Death Valley in 1956. There is a connection for this game as well. The Tigers hired Les Miles to be the head coach in 2005, his top assistant Mike Gundy was elevated to head coach of the Cowboys and has remained in that post ever since.

Worst Notre Dame loss under Brian Kelly

What’s been the Irish’s worst showing under their current coach?

Brian Kelly is entering his 12th season as Notre Dame coach. He needs only four wins to pass Knute Rockne for the most in program history. Along the way, he has accumulated 39 losses. The worst came during the Irish’s annual meeting with USC in the 2014 regular-season finale.

The Irish entered the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on a three-game losing streak, including their final two contests at Notre Dame Stadium. It didn’t help that the defense was ravaged by injuries. The Trojans didn’t care about any of that as they dominated early and never looked back in a 49-14 win.

USC jumped out to a 35-0 lead late in the second quarter. Malik Zaire, whom Kelly substituted for the struggling Everett Golson, ran for an 11-yard touchdown soon after to keep the goose egg off the Irish’s side of the scoreboard before halftime. Late in the third, Greg Bryant, Notre Dame’s leading rusher for 79 yards on seven carries, had a 1-yard touchdown run. By then, however, the Trojans not only had finished their scoring, but became the first team ever to throw six touchdown passes against the Irish.

Golson turned in his worst performance of the season, completing seven of 18 passes for 75 yards and one interception. He and Zaire particularly had a tough time with Trojans linebacker J.R. Tavai, who recorded three-and-a-half sacks and forced a lost fumble. It’s a miracle that the Irish only turned the ball over twice.

2014 had a happy ending for Notre Dame as a month later, it defeated LSU in the Music City Bowl, 31-28. Still, it had to be hard to forget that poor showing in Los Angeles. Perhaps using that game as motivation, the Irish have won four of the five meetings since. Hey, whatever gets you ready to play.

Outbreak of COVID-19 cases causes Missouri to pull out of Music City Bowl

Missouri will end Eli Drinkwitz’s first season 5-5 after an outbreak of COVID-19 cases forced the Tigers to opt out of the Music City Bowl.

[jwplayer 6aW0obA8]

Eli Drinkwitz’s first season as the head coach at Missouri will end sooner than expected.

On Sunday, it was announced that an outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the program has caused the Tigers to pull out of the Music City Bowl. They were set to face Iowa

This is the third SEC team to have to opt out of its bowl game due to COVID-19 along with Tennessee and South Carolina.

Missouri ends the season 5-5.

Despite losing last Saturday by 21 points to the No. 16-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, the Wisconsin Badgers’ bowl prediction from USA TODAY has not changed for this week.

The Badgers are still projected by USA TODAY to play the Missouri Tigers in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn on Dec. 30. Missouri has had a bounce-back season under new head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, including big wins against LSU, Kentucky, and South Carolina. However, Wisconsin is 4-1 in the all-time series with the Tigers, and the Badgers’ only loss came back in 1975 when they lost 21-28 in Columbia, Mo.

The College Football Playoff teams stay the same in this week’s predictions as Ohio State, Alabama, Notre Dame, and Clemson keep their positions.

Despite being 2-3 on the season, Wisconsin has a chance to finish the year at .500 with a win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers this weekend. A convincing win by the Badgers would help their chances for a better bowl game, instead of in the Music City Bowl that they are currently projected to play in.

After a disappointing loss to the now No. 8-ranked Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, the Wisconsin Badgers have fallen to No. 25 in both polls and have dropped in their USA TODAY bowl projections for this week.

Wisconsin is now predicted to play the Missouri Tigers in the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. The Badgers have dropped from their USA TODAY prediction of last week to play against the Auburn Tigers in the Citrus Bowl. Coincidentally, Wisconsin has only played in one Music City Bowl, and it was a 28-14 loss to Auburn back in 2003.

Missouri and Wisconsin have only played five times in their histories, with the Badgers winning four of the games. The last time the two teams played was back in 1984, where Wisconsin was able to pull out a narrow 35-34 victory against the Tigers on the road.

The predicted College Football Playoff teams for this week stay the same with Ohio State, Clemson, Alabama, and Notre Dame maintaining their positions.

Wisconsin will need a big game this weekend against the Iowa Hawkeyes to remain in a relevant bowl game and stay ranked, especially as the Badgers are sitting at 2-2 before the last game of the season.
