Detroit Red Wings at Montreal Canadiens odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Detroit Red Wings at Montreal Canadiens odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (40-32-9) take on the Montreal Canadiens (30-36-15) Tuesday at Bell Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Canadiens odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings have won 2 in a row in overtime after a 5-4 home win over these Canadiens Monday. LW Lucas Raymond ended it with 25 seconds to go in OT with his 31st goal of the season. The Wings enter the last game of the season in a tie with the Washington Capitals at 89 points for the final Wild Card. The Wings need a win and also need the Philadelphia Flyers to beat the Capitals in some fashion. The Red Wings lose all tiebreakers to the 4 teams in contention via fewer regulation wins.

The Habs enter their final game on a 4-game point streak, but they have lost the last 3 games in overtime or via shootout. RW Cole Caufield is ending the season on a binge with 7 goals and 2 assists in his last 10 games.

These teams have played 3 times this season, and all of them required overtime. The Wings took 2, and the Habs took 1 with Detroit winning in this building in December.

Red Wings at Canadiens projected goalies

James Reimer (10-8-2, 3.07 GAA, .905 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Cayden Primeau (8-9-3, 2.95 GAA, .910 SV%, 2 SO)

Reimer is 3-1-0 in his last 4 starts, but he has allowed 3+ goals in each. He allowed 4 goals in a 5-4 OT win against the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday. He was between the pipes for a 3-2 OT loss to Montreal Nov. 9, stopping 24 of 27 shots fired his way.

Primeau has lost 3 straight starts, allowing 14 goals in the process. In the middle of that, was a perfect 18-save relief outing against the Maple Leafs. He was in goal for the Nov. 9 OT win as he stopped 27 of 29 against Detroit.

Red Wings at Canadiens picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Wings have won 4 of the last 5 meetings, and we’ve had 5+ goals in 6 straight matchups. I’m fully on board with Detroit here but not at -190.

Head to the Parlays section, and take RED WINGS TO WIN AND OVER 4.5 GOALS (-120).

Puck line/Against the spread

These teams have played an insane 6 of 8 games against one another that went to overtime. Both teams’ last 3 overall went to OT as well.

Take a flyer on the 3-WAY RESULT: REGULAR TIME TIE (+375) for a nice return.

Over/Under

I’m staying away from the total here. The Over is 6-4 O/U in Montreal’s last 10 and 5-5 in Detroit’s. The Over is just 4-6 in the last 10 head-to-head, and with so much on the line, it could go either way.

We have already banked on an Over 4.5 in the ML section, so: PASS.

Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Montreal Canadiens (30-36-12) and New York Islanders (36-27-15) meet in a Thursday night affair on Long Island. The opening faceoff at UBS Arena is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Montreal, which leads this season series 2-0, has already been eliminated from playoff contention, but the Canadiens are coming off a season-high in goals and are 2-1-0 across their last 3 road tilts. On Tuesday, the Habs decimated the Philadelphia Flyers 9-3.

The Islanders head into Thursday’s game as the Metropolitan No. 3; they are looking to stay ahead of the Washington Capitals who are 2 points back in the Metro standings. New York downed the crosstown Rangers 4-2 Tuesday and have won 5 consecutive games.

Canadiens at Islanders projected goalies

Sam Montembeault (16-15-7, 3.10 GAA, .904 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (24-19-11, 3.02 GAA, .908 SV%)

Montembeault started Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia and earned the win, stopping 33 of 36 shots on goal. The 27-year-old has held foes to 3 goals or less in 4 of his last 5 starts.

Sorokin last played a week ago, stopping 25-of-27 shots in an April 4 road start at the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Russian netminder owns a solid .917 SV% at home.

Canadiens at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 5, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Isles have a solid probability of running their late-season win streak to 6, but better betting value can be found on the puck line. AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

New York’s last 3 wins have been by multiple scores.

Since Feb. 1, Sorokin has made 4 starts on 4-plus days’ rest. His save percentage in those starts is an aggregate .918.

Consider a partial-unit play on the ISLANDERS -1.5 (+115).

Over/Under

This series has seen the Over cash in 4 straight meetings. The Over has gone 4-1 in Montreal’s last 5 games.

And its the Canadiens’ 5-on-5 defense where this analysis begins. And justly so. The Habs have a 2.85 expected goals-against over the last 25 games (Natural Stat Trick, 5-on-5). Only 2 clubs have filed higher numbers over that span.

The Isles have a relatively low conversion rate on 5-on-5 high-danger looks over that same last-25 span. Look for a solid performance in a key game for them.

BACK THE OVER 6 (-110).

Montreal Canadiens at Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Montreal Canadiens at Carolina Hurricanes odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Montreal Canadiens (24-28-10) and Carolina Hurricanes (36-19-6) meet Thursday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Hurricanes odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens picked up a 4-3 win in overtime Tuesday in Nashville, its 3rd consecutive game not decided in regulation. Montreal lost the 1st 2 games of its 4-game road trip at Florida and Tampa Bay by 4-3 scores in a shootout. The Over is on a 4-0-1 run for the Habs.

The Hurricanes were stunned 5-3 at home in a matinee game Saturday afternoon by the Winnipeg Jets, and Carolina has had 4 full days off of the ice to stew about that setback.

Despite the loss to Winnipeg, the Hurricanes are still a rather impressive 8-3-1 across the previous 12 outings. The Over result against the Jets snapped a 5-0 run to the Under. The Under is also 12-3-1 in the previous 16 contests.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Canadiens +1.5 (+100) | Hurricanes -1.5 (-120)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Canadiens at Hurricanes projected goalies

Sam Montembeault (13-10-5, 3.15 GAA, .904 SV%) vs. Pyotr Kochetkov (16-11-3, 2.41 GAA, .910 SV%, 3 SO)

Montembeault is confirmed to start Thursday’s game. He allowed 3 or fewer goals in 5 of his 6 starts in February, going 2-3-1 with a 3.32 GAA and .902 SV%. On the road, he is 5-4-3 with a 3.74 GAA and .876 SV% in 12 road starts vs. a 8-6-2 record, 2.73 GAA and .922 SV% in 16 home starts.

Kochetkov coughed up 4 goals on 31 shots last time out against the Winnipeg Jets, starting the month of March off on the wrong foot after being named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month in February. He went 5-3-0 with a 1.71 GAA and .940 SV% with 2 SO in 8 February starts.

Canadiens at Hurricanes picks and predictions

Prediction

Hurricanes 4, Canadiens 3

Moneyline

The Hurricanes (-300) will set you back 3 times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk, either as a standalone wager or part of a parlay.

With the way the Canadiens (+230) have been playing lately, with 6 one-goal games in the past 8 outings, Montreal cannot be trusted. The Habs have dropped 7 straight in the series, with Carolina outscoring them 30-9 in the span.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The CANADIENS +1.5 (+100) are worth a look at even-money. While the Habs haven’t been much of a match for the Hurricanes -1.5 (-120) over the years, Montreal is playing very well lately against everybody else.

The Habs have played in 3 straight games requiring overtime or a shootout, and Montreal is 5-0 on the puck line as an underdog in the past 5 tries, winning 2 of the games outright.

Over/Under

OVER 6 (-120) is worth a look, as Montreal is using Montembeault, who allows at least 3 goals per game on average.

The Over has cashed in 3 in a row, while going 4-0-1 in the past 5 outings. On the road, the Over has cashed in 4 straight, while going 6-1 in the past 7 outings.

For the Hurricanes, the Over cashed last time out against the Jets, but there is risk going high. The Under is 12-3-1 in the past 16 games for Carolina, so be careful.

Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Montreal Canadiens (2-1-1) travel to meet the Buffalo Sabres (2-3-0) Monday at KeyBank Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (NHL Network). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Sabres odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens have alternated wins and losses since the opener, which was the team’s only road game to date. Montreal fell 6-5 in a wild shootout loss in Toronto to open the season as the Over (6.5) easily cashed.

The Sabres will be playing their 5th home game of the season. Buffalo has split the first 4 games at KeyBank Center, winning 3-1 against the New York Islanders in the most recent skate at home on Saturday. The Under has cashed in 4 of 5 games overall, including 3-1 at home.

Canadiens at Sabres odds

Provided by BetMGM Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:41 a.m. ET.

  • Moneyline (ML): Canadiens +150 (bet $100 to win $150) | Sabres -185 (bet $185 to win $100)
  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Canadiens +1.5 (-150) | Sabres -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -125 | U: +105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Canadiens at Sabres projected goalies

Jake Allen (1-0-1, 3.34 GAA, .907 SV%) vs. Devon Levi (1-3-0, 3.26 GAA, .892 SV%)

Allen has had a flare for the dramatic in his 2 outings so far. He allowed 5 goals on 42 shots in the aforementioned 6-5 SOL at Toronto in the opener, while stopping 31 of 33 shots in a 3-2 OT win against Washington last time out on Saturday.

Levi coughed up 4 goals on 36 shots in a 4-3 loss against the Calgary Flames on Thursday in his most recent showing. He has started 4 of the team’s 5 games to date, allowing 10 total goals in 3 home starts.

Canadiens at Sabres picks and predictions

Prediction

Sabres 4, Canadiens 3

Moneyline

The Sabres (-185) are a little on the pricey side, costing you nearly 2 times your potential return. That’s too much for a team which has basically been spinning its wheels this season, failing to gain traction one way or the other.

The Canadiens (+150) might be the better play, as the road team is 4-1 in the past 5 in this series, but Montreal has just been too inconsistent, too. Don’t bet just to bet, it’s a losing proposition.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The CANADIENS +1.5 (-150) is worth playing lightly, as we could have a very close game. Montreal has needed overtime or a shootout in 2 of 4 games to date, with 3 of its 4 games decided by a single goal.

The Sabres -1.5 (+125) have also played 3 games decided by a single goal through 5 outings.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (-125) is the lean, but again, go lightly.

The Under has cashed in 4 of 5 games for Buffalo, so you’ll be going a bit against the grain. However, Buffalo has allowed 3 or more goals in 3 of 5 games, while Montreal has yielded 15 goals through 4 outings. We should see plenty of lamp lightings.

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs open the 2023-24 National Hockey League regular season Wednesday at Scotiabank Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens will have a new look after parting with plenty of veterans, while re-signing their younger core. The defense looks to be a weak spot, and Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault figure to guard the cage, with Carey Price no longer in the crease.

The Maple Leafs made some big moves to strengthen the team, adding Tyler Bertuzzi to the top scoring line, while bringing in Max Domi, Martin Jones, John Klingberg and Ryan Reaves to provide depth across the board.

  • Puck line (PL)/Against the spread (ATS): Canadiens +1.5 (+100) | Maple Leafs -1.5 (-120)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -120 | U: +100)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Canadiens at Maple Leafs projected goalies

Jake Allen (15-24-3, 3.55 GAA, .891 SV%, 1 SO – 2022-23) vs. Ilya Samsonov (27-10-5, 2.33 GAA, .919 SV% , 4 SO)

Allen will get 1st crack at the cage in the opener, and the Leafs might be licking their chops to get at him. The veteran was just 1-1-0 with a 4.01 GAA and .890 SV% in 2 starts against the Leafs last season, including a 5-1 loss on Feb. 18, allowing 5 goals on 41 shots.

Samsonov resurrected his career last season in T-Dot after getting jettisoned by the Capitals. He went 19-3-0 with a 1.98 GAA and .927 SV% with 2 SO in 23 games at home last season, and he went 1-0-1 with a 1.99 GAA and .923 SV% in 2 starts against the Habs.

Canadiens at Maple Leafs picks and predictions

Prediction

Maple Leafs 5, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Maple Leafs (-300) will cost you 3 times your potential return, and that’s just too risky, especially in the opener.

Toronto “should” be able to easily push past an undermanned Montreal team, but that isn’t always the case when these Original 6 rivals get together. While the Habs have dropped 4 straight in Toronto, and the home team is 8-0 in the past 8 meetings overall, the Leafs are just too risky.

The Habs actually hold a 6-4 advantage in the previous 10 meetings, too, despite a perceived lack of talent compared to the higher-priced Leafs.

AVOID.

Puck line/Against the spread

The MAPLE LEAFS -1.5 (-120) are a better value laying the goal and a half on the puck line.

In Toronto’s 2 home games against Montreal last season, it outscored the Habs by a 12-2 count, easily covering the puck line in a pair of games as a heavy favorite. Still, be careful, as a favorite of -200 or greater last season, Toronto was just 2-2 straight up against Montreal, so go lightly.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-120) is also worth playing lightly, but be careful. Allen is very giving when it comes to facing the Leafs, especially in Toronto.

Be careful, though, as the Habs have a decent top scoring line, but things drop off precipitously as you go down the lines.

The Under is also 4-1-1 in the past 6 meetings, and 7-2-1 in the past 10 in the series, although Toronto took care of the Over on its own in the most recent meeting to close out last regular season.

Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (31-43-6) visit the New York Islanders (41-31-9) on Wednesday. Puck drop from UBS Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Canadiens vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Canadiens were drilled 7-1 by the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road last time out on Saturday. Montreal has dropped 5 of the past 6 games while cashing the Over in the past 2 games.

The Islanders were tripped up 5-2 on the road by the Washington Capitals Monday, snapping a 2-game win streak. This is the final game for the Isles, and they holds a narrow 1-point lead over the Penguins for the final Wild Card in the Eastern Conference.

Canadiens at Islanders projected goalies

Sam Montembeault (16-17-3, 3.36 GAA, .904 SV%) vs. Ilya Sorokin (30-22-7, 2.35 GAA, .924 SV%, 6 SO)

Montembeault is expected to get the nod in the penultimate game for the Habs. He was smashed for 7 goals on 46 shots in Toronto last time out on Saturday and has won just once in the past 4 starts.

Montembeault allowed 3 goals on 30 shots in a 4-3 OT win over the Isles on Feb. 11 in his most recent meeting with New York. He also allowed just 2 goals on 38 shots in a hard-luck 2-1 loss on the Island back on Jan. 14.

Sorokin coughed up 3 goals on 23 shots in a 5-2 loss at Washington last time out Monday. Still, he is a solid 2-3-0 with a 2.24 GAA and .927 SV% with a shutout in 5 April starts.

Sorokin allowed just a single goal on 23 shots in a 2-1 win over the Habs on Jan. 14 in Elmont.

Canadiens at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 5, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

The Islanders (-350) will cost you 3 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s way too expensive for a standalone wager or even as part of a parlay. There is no value in playing such heavy favorites.

PASS, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The ISLANDERS -1.5 (-135) are a much better play on home ice against the Canadiens in this must-win game.

Prior to the 5-2 loss in D.C., the Isles had won and cashed on the puck line as a favorite in the previous 2 outings. There is a risk here, too, however, as the Isles are 0-2 against the spread vs. the Canadiens this season, both as a favorite.

Over/Under

The OVER 6 (+100) is the lean in this all-important game for the Islanders.

The thinking here is that the Islanders are going to be super aggressive on offense, and they won’t show any signs of letting up until they know the win is in the bag and a postseason spot locked up.

The Over is 5-2-1 in the past 8 games on the road for the Habs while going 9-3 in their past 12 games against Metropolitan Division teams.

Avalanche at Canadiens picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

PASS.

The Avalanche (-270) should beat the Canadiens, but Colorado is being slightly overvalued on the moneyline considering its poor play as of late. Bet the puck line and/or total instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET CANADIENS +1.5 (-115).

Montreal is on a 6-game skid, but has covered the puck line in 6 of its last 7 games. Colorado has struggled vs. non-conference opponents lately and is just 1-4 in its last 5 games vs. Eastern Conference teams. Montreal managed to keep it close in a low-scoring game last time vs. Colorado and Monday’s matchup should look very similar to their most recent meeting.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-115).

The Under is 4-1 in Colorado’s last 5 games vs. teams with a losing record and 19-6-3 in the Avalanche’s last 28 contests on the road.

The Under has hit in 7 straight meetings between these teams and Monday’s matchup should be another low-scoring affair.

Rangers at Canadiens picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline

PASS.

New York (-280) should win, but it is being slightly overvalued on the moneyline considering its poor play as of late. Bet the puck line and/or total instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET CANADIENS +1.5 (-105).

Montembeault is undefeated vs. New York in his career and if he can keep this game lower-scoring, it would favor Montreal on the puck line. The Canadiens have had trouble winning straight up lately, but their last 4 losses have all been by just 1 goal.

New York has scored more than 3 goals in just 1 of its last 8 games and should struggle to win by margin while its offense underperforms.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-115).

The Rangers’ offense has been underwhelming lately and the Under is 3-1-1 in New York’s last 5 road games. The Under has hit in 4 of the last 5 meetings between these teams and Thursday’s matchup should be another low-scoring affair with 2 goalies projected to start who have had success vs. the teams they’re facing.

Allen allowed 4 goals on 29 shots vs. the Flyers in the Nov. 19 shootout win. He’s 1-3-0 in 4 career starts vs. Philadelphia with a 3.55 GAA and .883 SV% (106 saves against 120 shots).

Canadiens at Flyers picks and predictions

Prediction

Flyers 4, Canadiens 3

Moneyline

BET FLYERS (-160).

Montreal should be in a letdown spot after winning as a big underdog Tuesday at New Jersey. The Canadiens are just 3-10 in their last 13 games after a win, and the Flyers will be desperate to bounce back after blowing a late lead at Edmonton. Look for Philadelphia to get its revenge for the shootout loss earlier in the season.

Puck line/Against the spread

PASS.

Philadelphia’s last 5 home games have been decided by 1 goal. Canadiens +1.5 (-190) should hit, but Montreal is being slightly overvalued on the puck line. Bet the moneyline and/or total instead.

Over/Under

BET OVER 6.5 (+105).

The Over is 5-2 in Montreal’s last 7 games and 3-1-1 in the Canadiens’ last 5 after a win. The Over has hit in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 5 games and is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings between these teams.

Canadiens at Devils projected goalies

Sam Montembeault (11-11-2, 3.29 GAA, .906 SV%) vs. Vitek Vanecek (24-5-3, 2.30 GAA, .917 SV%, 2 SO)

Montembeault faced the Devils once last season and allowed 2 goals on 32 shots in a 3-2 shootout loss on the road. He’s 1-0-1 in 2 career starts vs. New Jersey with a 2.41 GAA and .917 SV% (55 saves against 60 shots).

Canadiens at Devils picks and predictions

Prediction

Devils 4, Canadiens 1

Moneyline

PASS.

The Devils (-360) should win, but there is no need to risk almost 4 times your potential profit on the moneyline when New Jersey should win by multiple goals. Bet the puck line and/or total instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

BET DEVILS -1.5 (-140).

Three of New Jersey’s last 4 wins have been by multiple goals, and the Devils are 19-7 in their last 26 games vs. teams with a losing record. Three of Montreal’s last 4 losses have been by 4 or more goals, and the Canadiens are 19-39 in their last 58 games vs. teams with a winning record. The Canadiens should struggle to keep it close vs. a Devils team that hasn’t lost at home with Vanecek in net since Dec. 28 when New Jersey dropped a 3-1 decision against the Boston Bruins as a +100 underdog.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-115).

The Under is 3-0-1 in New Jersey’s last 4 after a win and 11-5 in the Devils’ last 16 vs. teams with a losing record. The Under has hit in 4 of New Jersey’s last 5 home games and is 4-1 in Montreal’s last 5 on the road.
