Notre Dame to face Utah in MLB Network’s first live softball game

Some exciting news for the Irish.

Well, it’s February, which means we’re closer to warmer weather, which means we’re closer to softball season. So how about a first involving Notre Dame’s team? One that involves a first for MLB Network?

For the first time in its 15-year history, MLB Network will broadcast a live softball game. That game will involve the Irish and Utah at 1 p.m. EST Feb. 10 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida. Last year, MLB Network broadcast a game between UCLA and Oklahoma on tape delay.

This game vs. the Utes will be the third of five games the Irish play during this season-opening event. They also will take part in three other invitationals in the early part of the season. Their first game at Melissa Cook Stadium will be March 19 vs. Michigan State.

The Irish are coming off a season in which they went 30-19-1 and qualified for their 24th straight NCAA Tournament.

PointsBet Sportsbook’s ridiculous scenario for Notre Dame-Ohio State

No way this happens.

Let’s begin by getting two facts out of the way. First, Shohei Ohtani is the greatest thing baseball has to offer right now and maybe ever. Second, Peacock has MLB broadcast rights but only does Sunday games. NBC gets one of those games every year and surely would be one of the regularly scheduled games.

That being the case, the chances of NBC breaking away from any Notre Dame game for baseball, particularly the game against Ohio State, are virtually nonexistent. But that’s not stopping PointsBet Sportsbook from posing a scenario that defies all logic:

I don’t care how exciting a player Ohtani is or what’s on the line for him. No broadcast network in its right mind is going to cut away from college football to cover something for another sport. Is watching it on MLB Network not enough? If people are watching college football, chances are they don’t care about anything else at the moment.

On top of that, Aaron Judge already broke the American League single-season home run record last year. There’s nothing at stake in this scenario except for Ohtani joining the 60-homer club. If this happens for Ohtani, this has to happen for all players on this precipice going forward. Somehow, I doubt that will happen because it’s not Ohtani.

Yes, there are exceptions to the rule of not cutting away from an Irish home game. The most notable example was NBC temporarily transferring the feed of the 2020 classic against Clemson to USA Network so it could broadcast Joe Biden’s victory speech for the presidential election that was called earlier that day. But an Ohtani at-bat is not on the same scale as a speech from the new soon-to-be leader of the free world.

I’m all for a nice debate on Twitter, but this is the wrong one to start. Not only does it not make any sense, but it’s insulting to everyone’s intelligence. NBC will not cut into an Irish-Buckeyes game for a sport that it barely has any rights to. Hopefully, everyone who saw this tweet figured that out quickly.

Cal Ripken and Ron Darling argue that pitchers aren’t throwing harder in nonsensical video edit

What was the point here?

It’s difficult to imagine a league worse at promoting its game than Major League Baseball. We’re talking about a league that is full of exciting young players — like Shohei Ohtani, Fernando Tatis Jr., Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Ronald Acuña (before his injury) — doing things that deserve praise.

And yet, time and time again, MLB’s own network personalities really go out of their way to discredit the incredible skill in today’s game.

That couldn’t have been more clear than what we saw in a Sunday segment on MLB Network.

In front of a big screen, Cal Ripken Jr. and Ron Darling had the production team edit together side-by-side videos of 90s/2000s star pitchers with star pitchers of today all in an attempt to disprove the notion that today’s pitchers are throwing harder than ever before.

There was so much wrong with this:

The premise of the segment was that pitchers like Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina threw just as hard as today’s pitchers because the side-by-side videos showed their catchers catching the ball first (while ignoring the radar-gun readings).

When it comes to syncing videos of pitchers, there are so many variables that come to play. The release points are different. The catcher is catching the ball at a different spot. The frame rates of videos across decades also vary. The video quality isn’t good enough to see exactly when the ball gets released. The list goes on.

And even with all that in mind, the MLB Network crew blatantly gave the older pitchers a head start. Like, Johnson’s pitch is already on the way to the mound when Gerrit Cole still had the ball in his hand. Not to mention that Johnson is six inches taller and far longer than Cole.

It’s such an unnecessary argument to make, and it was odd to see MLB Network do so in such an unscientific way. What was even the point besides proving that MLB Network has a contingent of old baseball dudes who can’t accept that today’s players are better?

Giants pitcher Alex Wood had to call out the segment because it was so bad.

Today’s pitchers throw harder and with more movement than ever before. It’s a fact proven by actual analytics and metrics rather than questionable video editing. It’s OK to admit that, Cal and Ron.
