Badgers men’s hockey puts together historic weekend

Badgers get the best of rivals on the road

When the Badgers hired Mike Hastings (Minnesota State) to become their head coach this offseason, they were looking for a quick turnaround following their 13-23 season in 2022-2023. What they didn’t realize was how quick they’d figure things.

Wisconsin went on the road to face #1 ranked Minnesota on the road Thursday and Friday night, beating the Gophers on both occasions.

After getting down 1-0 in the first 15 seconds of Thursday’s matchup, the Badgers responded quickly and got the win 5-2. They continued their momentum Friday, eeking out a 3-2 win, sweeping Minnesota on the road for only the fifth time in 23 years.

With leaders like Mathieu De St. Phalle and Cruz Lucius out on the ice, it’s possible that this Wisconsin squad could be in for a special year, now sitting at 7-1 through eight games.

Notre Dame Opens Big Ten Tournament with Win

The Fighting Irish failed to convert on a five minute power play in the second period but did find a net via a Trevor Janicke put-back late in the period.

Quarterfinals for the 2020 Big Ten Hockey Tournament got underway Friday and can I start by just throwing a little praise to the Big Ten?

I know that’s not generally a popular view in these parts and I tend to lead that charge but in hockey the regular season conference champion gets a first round bye in the conference tournament while the other six qualifying schools play a best-of-three against their quarterfinal opponent to advance.

It’s not perfect as I wish it was a best-of-three in the next two rounds but hey, it’s at least a start.

Now to Friday’s game:

No. 5 Notre Dame dominated the first period Friday at No. 4 Minnesota outshooting the Gophers 12-2. However, no pucks found the net as the opening frame ended scoreless.

The Fighting Irish failed to convert on a five minute power play in the second period but did find a net via a Trevor Janicke put-back late in the period.

Taking a 1-0 lead to the final frame, the Notre Dame defense continued to dominate the evening as they allowed just 12 shots against all night long which resulted in Cale Morris’s 11th career shutout, the third such showing in a Big Ten Tournament game.

Notre Dame and Minnesota again battle Saturday night in Minneapolis with puck drop set for 7 p.m. ET. A win would send Notre Dame to the semi-finals while a loss would force a deciding game three which would be played Sunday night again at Minnesota.

Ohio State men’s hockey drops second game of series against Minnesota, gets swept

The Ohio State men’s hockey team got swept in Minneapolis by dropping the second game of the series against Minnesota Saturday night.

This weekend is nothing close to what the Ohio State men’s hockey team had in mind. It left for the Twin Cities in first place in the Big Ten, but lost two games in convincing fashion and now sit in 3rd place behind Penn State and Michigan State who both battled to overtime Saturday night.

The contest tonight was an ugly one and it got started early. After a bad turnover in its own zone, Ohio State gave up a quick goal just five minutes in to go down 1-0. It stayed that way through twenty minutes of play, but then the Gophers scored two more goals in the second period, heavily outshooting the Buckeyes to take a 3-0 lead into the second break.

With the way this one was going, a three-goal lead seemed insurmountable. OSU got one back though when Caron Meyer scored on the Power Play to cut the lead to 3-1. But that would be it. The Gophers added one more on a power play for good measure, and the final score read 4-1.

Minnesota had a decided advantage in shots early on, but Ohio State tried to push back with a little momentum. Still, the Gophers had ten more shots on goal (33-23) and made good on scoring chances.

With the loss, Ohio State falls to 15-8-3 overall, and 8-6-2 in the conference. It’s a hard road from here on out with the next series’ against Michigan on the road, Penn State at home, and Michigan State away. Yeah, that’s a cruel schedule, but it does allow for a great opportunity to do damage head-on with teams above it.

Ohio State men’s hockey loses to Minnesota Friday night, drops out of first place

The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell 6-3 to the Minnesota Golden Gophers Friday night.

Life in first place was short-lived for the Ohio State men’s hockey team. Just a week after securing the top spot in the Big Ten by taking 3 of 4 possible points in a weekend series with Notre Dame, the Buckeyes couldn’t keep it going in game one against the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

Things started off good enough for the Buckeyes Friday night. They struck first when Quinn Preston lit the lamp with 8:54 left in the first period. The Gophers struck back at the end of the first though, and things were tied after twenty minutes.

OSU again grabbed the lead in the second when Sam McCormick got one past the Minnesota goaltender for a 2-1 lead with 13:21 left in the period. But that’s when the Gophers started to find their groove.

Minnesota scored two more goals before the period ended, and suddenly Ohio State found itself down a goal after two periods of play. The Gophers then got two more goals, one of the flukey variety that bounced off the glass and was originally called a no-goal, but overturned. Suddenlty, OSU was in a 5-2 hole.

In garbage time a couple goals were scored by both sides until the game ended with a 6-3 Minnesota win. With the loss, Ohio State drops out of first place to Michigan State but gets another shot to get it back tonight in game two against the Gophers. A win, and a Michigan State loss to Penn State would mean the Buckeyes are again in the driver’s seat.

Hockey Sweeps No. 8 Ohio State/Earn Big Ten’s Third-Star of Week

For the second week in a row the Irish found a player earning the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week as senior net-minder Cale Morris did so.  Morris earned two wins over the weekend, bringing his career total to 50, the fifth most in Notre Dame hockey history.

Notre Dame hockey improved to 7-0-1 over the weekend after sweeping previously No. 8 Ohio State as  Jake Pivonka and Cam Burke scored third period goals on Saturday to complete the sweep.

As a result the Irish moved to No. 3 in the USA Hockey/USA Today poll this week, trailing just No. 1 Denver and No. 2 Minnesota State in the rankings.

The Irish now sit alone atop the Big Ten standings with 10 conference points on the year.  Penn State (9) and Minnesota (7) sit directly behind.

For the second week in a row the Irish found a player earning the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week as senior net-minder Cale Morris did so.  Morris earned two wins over the weekend, bringing his career total to 50, the fifth most in Notre Dame hockey history.

Jordan Pearce (2005-09) leads the way all-time with 59.

The award is the twelfth time Morris has been named one of the Big Ten’s Three Stars of the Week as he’s been named top-star six times, and second and third-star both three times now.

Senior forward Patrick Khodorenko of Michigan State top away this week’s first-star honors while freshman forward Alex Turcotte of Wisconsin took home the second-star.

Morris and the Irish will travel to Madison to take on Turcotte and the Badgers for a two-game series this weekend.   Both games starting at 8 pm ET on Saturday and Sunday with the Badgers still looking for their first conference win.
