Three Ohio State players appear on Outland Trophy watch list

In case you missed it, three Buckeyes appeared on the Outland Trophy watch list. #GoBucks

Some more college football preseason watch lists are making the rounds. On Tuesday, we saw three Ohio State players make the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watchlist, and that was followed up with three more Buckeyes on the Outland Trophy preseason watch list.

The Outland Trophy was first handed out in 1946. It is administered by the Football Writers Association of America and is given to the college game’s best offensive lineman or interior defensive lineman.

This year’s Outland watch list has 94 names included on it, with defensive tackle Mike Hall, as well as offensive linemen Matt Jones and Donovan Jackson making the cut.

OSU has a pretty good history of Outland winners, with four players receiving the trophy. Jim Parker did it in 1956, Jim Stillwagon received the honor in 1970, John Hicks won the award in 1973, and Orlando Pace pancaked his way to the Outland in 1996. It’s been a dry spell since.

As more of these watch lists come out that have Ohio State players included, we’ll be sure to bring them all to you.

How good is Ohio State’s 2024 defensive line? 247Sports has an answer

Just how good is Larry Johnson’s group? #GoBucks

Entering the 2023 season, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] is one of just a few schools that should contend for one of the four [autotag]College Football Playoff [/autotag] berths.

One of the reasons why is due to the talent that the Buckeyes return on their defensive line, the group coached by legend, [autotag]Larry Johnson[/autotag]. Multiple contributors headlined by [autotag]Mike Hall[/autotag], [autotag]J.T. Tuimoloau[/autotag], and [autotag]Jack Sawyer[/autotag] make up one of the best groups in the country, but how good are they?

Brad Crawford of 247Sports tried to answer that question by ranking the top 10 defensive lines across the country and came to the conclusion that the Buckeyes group trails just one other, Georgia’s.

The rationale is fairly simple, Crawford believes that “this unit could go next level and potentially be tops in the country if Hall and Sawyer continue their development as every-down threats.”

There will be two factors for that statement to come true. With Hall, it’s all about his health. If the big defensive tackle can stay on the field, he’s a true difference maker (see above).

For Sawyer, it’s about remembering who he was in high school. Playing the Jack position last year wasn’t the best idea, because he was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. Sawyer’s move back to defensive end hopefully unlocks his 5-star potential (see below).

If both of those things happen, then Crawford is spot on with his assessment that the Buckeyes have one of the best defensive lines units in the country.

Ohio State makes transfer defensive tackle’s top 5

The Buckeyes are looking to add defensive line depth from the portal #GoBucks

Although spring practice is coming to a close, Ohio State continues looking to add depth to its defensive line, specifically the interior.

Last year [autotag]Mike Hall[/autotag] had trouble staying on the field due to injuries and [autotag]Tyleik Williams[/autotag] played sparingly behind him, [autotag]Taron Vincent[/autotag] and [autotag]Jerron Cage[/autotag]. Defensive line coach [autotag]Larry Johnson[/autotag] rotates plenty of bodies within his position group, so depth is paramount.

Enter former Maryland defensive tackle [autotag]Tank Booker[/autotag]. The Ohio native entered the portal at the beginning of March after spending his first four seasons with Maryland. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2022, registering 27 tackles with two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Booker released his top five schools Saturday with Ohio State making the cut along with Purdue, South Carolina, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

According to this report from Hale McGranahan of 247Sports, Booker is set to make his choice on April 12. We will know soon where Tank will end up.

Initial thoughts on Ohio State getting the final spot into the College Football Playoff

What were your thoughts after finding out the Buckeyes made the CFP? #GoBucks

It was a great Sunday for the Buckeyes. The College Football Playoff committee selected Ohio State as the No. 4 and gave it a matchup with the top overall seed and defending champion, Georgia Bulldogs. It will be a very interesting game.

Ryan Day and his football team were extremely excited, which isn’t surprising after losing to arch-rival Michigan at home during the last weekend of the regular season. A number of thoughts have crossed my mind since the committee selected the Buckeyes. Here are the ones that have stood out as we will undoubtedly analyze this game plenty before it’s actually played on New Year’s Eve.

Arkansas State at Ohio State three and out halftime review

Arkansas State at Ohio State three and out halftime review #GoBucks

The Ohio State Buckeyes are currently leading the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 24-9 and although that may seem like a good score, the game has been somewhat disappointing. Ohio State was favored to win by more than six touchdowns and it is going to be really hard to accomplish with their offensive struggles and bend don’t break defense.

It is important to note that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is currently out and did not even dress for the game, but with such an inferior opponent, the hope was a few studs would shine. The game isn’t a complete failure though, most things I noticed were actually positive. Let’s dive into the three items we noticed before the half.

The day after: Looming thoughts on Notre Dame after losing to Ohio State

Better days ahead for the Irish

It’s been just about 24-hours (at the time that this was published) since the game started on Saturday, but my mind is still focused on Notre Dame’s loss to Ohio State. It was just one game and there are plenty of aspects that can be taken from it. Here are a few thoughts that have racked in my brain over the last day.

Defensive lineman Mike Hall loses black stripe

A new member of the rushmen was announced Wednesday with Mike Hall shedding his black stripe. #GoBucks

Heading into Week 4 of the young 2021 season and there are still black stripes to be lost. The latest member to do is defensive lineman Mike Hall.

Hall was a four-star recruit out of Streetsboro, Ohio, and was the No. 10 ranked defensive tackle in the nation last year. He was one of only two D- linemen that signed with the Buckeyes this past year joining Tyleik Williams, who shed his black stripe just a short time ago.

Excited to be an official member of the Rushmen, listen to what Hall had to say as he addressed his teammates.

“First off, I just want to thank the O-Line for pushing me every day, and shoutout to the unit. Shoutout to Coach Johnson. Go Bucks!”

Soon after Williams lost his black stripe, he made an immediate impact on the field against Tulsa. Maybe we’ll end up seeing something similar with Mike Hall as Akron comes to town this Saturday night.

BTN’s Rick Pizzo picks Ryan Day and Ohio State as his favorite story of the 2019-2020 athletic season

Ryan Day and Ohio State was picked as the favorite story for the 2019-2020 Big Ten athletic season by BTN’s Rick Pizzo.

I feel like every article now starts with sports is shut down because … you know where I’m going. But it’s true. We don’t have much to watch that took place prior to the tail-end of the college basketball season.

The cycle of sports coverage for college athletics generally starts in the fall with college football, then runs through the spring sports that end their seasons in the early summer. Except this year, there were no spring sports, only fall and winter before things got cut short very prematurely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

So what better thing to do than reflect?

That’s exactly what BTN did when three of the studio analysts got together to each provide their favorite story of the Big Ten athletic season, prior to everything being shelved.

The trio of Dave Revsine, Rick Pizzo, and Mike Hall each had different answers, but Pizzo’s was what Ryan Day and Ohio State did. He even threw a little shade at Clemson with commenting on the Buckeyes getting the short end of the stick with the officiating in the Fiesta Bowl.

You can listen to Pizzo’s comments, as well as the other two’s favorite stories by clicking on the below Tweet shared by the Big Ten Network’s official Twitter feed.
