Ohio State makes transfer defensive tackle’s top 5

The Buckeyes are looking to add defensive line depth from the portal #GoBucks

Although spring practice is coming to a close, Ohio State continues looking to add depth to its defensive line, specifically the interior.

Last year [autotag]Mike Hall[/autotag] had trouble staying on the field due to injuries and [autotag]Tyleik Williams[/autotag] played sparingly behind him, [autotag]Taron Vincent[/autotag] and [autotag]Jerron Cage[/autotag]. Defensive line coach [autotag]Larry Johnson[/autotag] rotates plenty of bodies within his position group, so depth is paramount.

Enter former Maryland defensive tackle [autotag]Tank Booker[/autotag]. The Ohio native entered the portal at the beginning of March after spending his first four seasons with Maryland. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2022, registering 27 tackles with two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Booker released his top five schools Saturday with Ohio State making the cut along with Purdue, South Carolina, Arkansas and Texas A&M.

According to this report from Hale McGranahan of 247Sports, Booker is set to make his choice on April 12. We will know soon where Tank will end up.

Three veteran Buckeye defenders decide to return to Ohio State for 2022

A trio of OSU defenders returning for another year provide a big boost for the Ohio State defense going into 2022.

The Ohio State defense got some good news this week when it was reported that Teradja Mitchell, Jerron Cage, and Palaie Gaoteote will all be returning to Columbus for another year. All three were eligible to leave for the NFL, but have decided to run it back one more time.

Even with a talented crop of new recruits coming in, these three returners will provide veteran leadership as well as much-needed depth on the defensive side of the ball. Jim Knowles must be making a big impression on what the defense can look like in the coming season. And clearly, the brotherhood is strong.

Let’s take a look at what each one brings to the table heading into the 2022 season.

Watch defensive tackle Jerron Cage rumble for a scoop and score right before halftime. #GoBucks

On an all-scarlet night in the ‘Shoe, Ohio State has struggled just a tad against Penn State. The Nittany Lions are the best team OSU has seen since week 2 when Oregon came to town and it is showing.

After a long scoring strike to Chris Olave to give the Buckeyes the lead, the defense came right back and forced a turnover. Tyreke Smith and Zach Harrison sandwiched Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford popping the ball loose. Defensive lineman Jerron Cage scooped it up like a ribeye steak and carried it to the house.

Watch the big man rumble for 57-yards and the score to put the Buckeyes by two scores.

Get that man some oxygen!

The Buckeyes will need to make a few adjustments at halftime and clean up some sloppy penalties. The Bucks lead 17-10 with Penn State getting the ball to begin the second half.

Jerron Cage with the big man scoop-and-score for Ohio State

Jerron Cage with the big-man touchdown for Ohio State against Penn State

Ohio State needed a big play from its defense Saturday against Penn State.

The Buckeyes got one from one of their biggest players, 6-foot-2, 305-pound senior defensive tackle Jerron Cage.

Sean Clifford was hit and coughed up the football late in the second quarter.

The ball wound up in the hands of Cage, who looked more like a wideout in No. 86 than a DT as he ran 57 yards to the end zone.

The PAT made it 17-7 for Ohio State, which is looking to remain perfect in Big Ten play.

Penn State’s offense had played pretty well in the first half against Ohio State, but its second lost fumble of the half was a costly one in the unlikeliest of fashions. Ohio State defensive lineman Jerron Cage picked up a fumble lost by Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and ran unchallenged 57-yards to the end zone for a game-swinging touchdown in favor of the Buckeyes.

Penn State entered the game not having lost one fumble all season long. In the first half against Ohio State, Penn State lost two. The breaks have not gone Penn State’s way so far, and the offense will have to find ways to generate some more drives resulting in points.

Cage’s scoop-and-score came on Penn State’s ensuing possession after the Buckeyes had taken the lead on the Nittany Lions on a C.J. Stroud  38-yard pass to Chris Olave.
