Alabama fans go wild after Jalen Milroe unloads 47-yard touchdown

Jalen Milroe flashes his arm strength and unloads a 47-yard touchdown pass that extends Alabama’s lead.

Jalen Milroe got the nod to be the Alabama football starting quarterback for the first game of the season against Middle Tennessee. While some fans were skeptical, he has done a solid job in managing the game, extending plays with his legs and flashing some serious arm talent.

To extend the Crimson Tide’s lead to 28 over the scoreless Blue Raiders, Milroe unleashed a 47-yard touchdown to Isaiah Bond. He was hit in stride as he entered the end zone.

We have yet to see another quarterback take he field for Alabama, but there hasn’t been a need to, as Milroe continues to plead his case to remain QB1 for the program.

Alabama football will open the 2023 season with a home matchup against Middle Tennessee. The last time the Crimson Tide faced the Blue Raiders was in 2015. The Tide won that game in convincing fashion.

With Jake Coker at quarterback and Derrick Henry running the ball, Middle Tennessee had a tough challenge. The Tide walked away with a 26-7 victory.

Photos from the contest will take Alabama fans on a trip down memory lane as they see some of the Crimson Tide’s brightest stars, some of whom found their way into the NFL.

The Crimson Tide looks to go up 3-0 all-time against Middle Tennessee.

SERIES HISTORY: Alabama is undefeated all-time against Middle Tennessee

Alabama and Middle Tennessee have met twice before. The Crimson Tide will look to make it 3-0 this Saturday.

Alabama football’s 2023 season kicks off with a home game against Middle Tennessee. These two teams have played twice in the past, with the Crimson Tide winning both.

The first meeting took place in 2002 in Birmingham when Alabama got the win, but the Blue Raiders kept it close.

It wasn’t until 2015 that the two got back together on the gridiron. The second contest took place in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide got the win with a final score of 26-7. This win, however, was vacated.

It’s safe to say Alabama is expected to win this one, with ESPN’s Football Power Index giving the Tide a 98.9% chance to win. This will be Saban’s first time facing the Blue Raiders and will look to make it 3-0 all-time against Middle Tennessee.

5 reasons why Week 1 against MTSU sets the tone for Alabama’s season

Don’t overlook Alabama’s Week 1 matchup against Middle Tennessee, it means more than you think.

Alabama football’s 2023 season doesn’t begin with a prime-time matchup against a ranked opponent on a neutral field. However, that shouldn’t lead fans to believe this is just another “tune-up game” as some would put it. This game has plenty of meaning that goes beyond how it impacts the record.

Middle Tennessee is a solid team that proved as recently as last season they can do some damage on the road against quality opponents. In 2022, the Blue Raiders walked into Miami Gardens and handed the Miami Hurricanes a 45-31 loss.

There are major questions that have loomed over this Alabama team all offseason and there still won’t be many answers at the time of kickoff.

This first game of the season for Alabama sets the tone. Here are five things to look out for.

Alabama football announces start times for remaining non-conference matchups

Alabama football has announced kick times for the remainder of the Crimson Tide’s non-conference opponents in 2023!

The 2023 season is a crucial one for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide after missing out on the playoffs last season. The Tide will face one of the toughest schedules in the country with two new coordinators and a quarterback.

Alabama already announced that their non-conference game against Texas will be in primetime at 6:00 p.m. CST on ESPN. Today, the Tide announced the kickoff times for their three remaining non-SEC games.

Middle Tennessee comes to Bryant Denny Stadium for a 6:30 p.m. kick-off under the lights on Sept. 2. Then, the Tide travel to Southern Florida for a 2:30 p.m. start against the Bulls on Sept. 19. Finally, the Tide will host Chattanooga at 11 a.m. on Nov. 18, the week leading up to the Iron Bowl.

The Longhorns will without a doubt be the toughest test for the Tide of those four games, but it is imperative Alabama doesn’t drop any games outside of SEC play. Texas gave Alabama a scare in 2022, but with it back in Tuscaloosa now, the game will be really interesting.

San Diego State vs Middle Tennessee EasyPost Hawaii Bowl 5 Things To Know

EasyPost Hawaii Bowl Prediction, What’s Going To Happen, History

It’s been a weird year for San Diego State. The opening of its shiny new awesome stadium was a total flop – losing to Arizona 38-20 – to kickoff an ugly run of offense in a rocky 2-3 start that was a somewhat miraculous late drive against Toledo away from being even worse.

The team switched offensive coordinators, defensive back – and former Mississippi State QB – Jalen Mayden took over under center, and it all clicked. This isn’t the nasty team of 2021, but it’s solid now.

Middle Tennessee had a rough start, too, going 3-4 with a strange loss to Louisiana Tech to be 4-5 going into the finishing kick. It won its last three games, took down four of the last five, and for that it got to go to Hawaii. Overall the team has been just okay, but the defense takes it away in bunches.

This is the tenth bowl appearance under Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill, and the results haven’t been anything great until the last few bowls. The program was 2-2 in bowls up until 1964, and everything else has been done under the current head man going 3-6, but 2-3 over the last three including a win over Toledo in last year’s Bahamas.

San Diego State is hit-or-miss in bowls. Only the 2017 42-35 loss to Army was a close game out of the last six appearances. The Aztecs pushed past a good UTSA in last year’s Frisco, and took down Central Michigan in a blowout in the 2019 New Mexico to make it four wins in the last six. Head coach Brady Hoke in his two stints at SDSU is 2-0 in bowls

The Hawaii Bowl was canceled the last two seasons thanks to COVID, and it needs to come back roaring. The 38-34 Hawaii win over BYU in 2019 was good, and Fresno State and Houston played a good one in 2017, but six of the last eight have been double-digit blowouts.

Why San Diego State Will Win The EasyPost Hawaii Bowl

The defense is rested.

This is nowhere near the D that dominated throughout 2021, but overall it’s been a rock against the run since the midseason second half debacle against Boise State – and in the season finale against Air Force – and shouldn’t have too much of an issue against the Middle Tennessee attack.

The Blue Raiders have a hard time keeping defenses out of the backfield, they don’t do much of anything on the ground, and they’re going to need takeaways to manufacture points if the passing game doesn’t rock.

On the flip side, San Diego State found something in Mayden and the passing game. Middle Tennessee is statistically a rock against the run, but that’s because everyone spent so much time throwing. It allowed 300 or more passing yards in three of its last four games and over 400 in the tight win over FIU.

Mayden won’t bomb away, but he should be efficient. However …

2022-2023 Bowl Schedule, Predictions

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win The EasyPost Hawaii Bowl

Takeaways, takeaways, takeaways.

Middle Tennessee throws well and can run enough go get by, but it crushes teams by forcing mistakes with two or more takeaways in eight of the 12 games. It’s what the program does – it’s been great at it for the last few years.

San Diego State doesn’t has a massive turnover issue, but it’s not designed to overcome a slew of big mistakes. It turned the ball over multiple times in five games going 1-4 in those games. It was 6-1 when it didn’t give it away twice.

On the other side, Chase Cunningham is a nice veteran quarterback who should be a difference-maker. He threw for close to 3,000 yards with 19 scores, runs enough to be a problem, and he should be good for at least 200 passing yards.

Middle Tennessee vs FIU What’s Going To Happen

Just when it seemed like it was all falling apart, Middle Tennessee won two straight – including a dominant performance in the 49-21 win over Florida Atlantic – to get bowl eligible. Now it’s time to push for a stronger final game.

FIU has lost three straight after it looked like it was turning its season around, but it’s got enough of an offense to potentially make this interesting.

Maybe.

The Panther passing game has crashed, and worst of all in this there are too many turnovers. Middle Tennessee is great at taking the ball away, the defense will overcome a rough day from the secondary with three forced turnovers, and the accurate passing game will take care of everything on the other side.

Charlotte vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

The passing game continues to work.

It has to keep bombing away to make up for the defense, but Chris Reynolds is good for at least 250 yards against the Middle Tennessee defense the takes the ball away but can get bombed on.

Middle Tennessee is 1-6 when allowing 260 yards or more through the air, and the 49ers throw for 271 per game. That’s a tad misleading, though, because …

10 Best Picks Against The Spread

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

That’s not good enough. The offense can’t keep up with the problems on the defensive side.

The 49ers continue to trot out the worst defense in college football that gets hit too hard against everyone’s ground game and gets bombed on by everyone.

Middle Tennessee might not have a high-powered attack, but it’ll get going with all over 300 yards through the air in this. As long as the offense doesn’t turn it over five times like it did in the puzzling 40-24 loss to Louisiana Tech last week …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Along with all of the problems on defense, Charlotte has a massive turnover issue with three in three of the last four games and a -10 margin on the year.

Middle Tennessee will bust out of its funk for a little bit with a big day from the balanced attack.

It’ll be fun – these two will trade big offensive shots.

Middle Tennessee vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Can the Blue Raiders keep taking the ball away and be on the right side of the overall battle?

The defense is amazing at consistently coming up with turnovers – three in three of the last four games and 15 in the last six – but that hasn’t been enough for the last few weeks.

UTEP isn’t above giving it away in bunches, and it doesn’t have the efficient and dangerous passing game to make up for the upcoming mistakes.

Middle Tennessee’s offense has to take advantage of every opportunity because …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why UTEP Will Win

The Blue Raider offense blew a tire.

It’s not awful but it’s been progressively worse and less productive each week since the stunning win over Miami a month ago.

The running game is struggling to consistently keep drives going, and the passing attack isn’t making up for it. The O struggles to turn drives into points.

UTEP might not be perfect, but it won three of the last four games with the ground game taking over. Commit to the running game, don’t put the ball in the air where the velociraptors in the Blue Raider secondary can attack, and come up with a few takeaways, too.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Blue Raider win over Miami is beginning to look more and more flukish.

To be fair, UTSA, UAB, and WKU are there tough games, but Middle Tennessee wasn’t all that close in any of them even with all the takeaways.

UTEP has the ability to stall offensively, but it’s ground game will work. As long as it doesn’t turn the ball over more than three times and isn’t anything worse than -2 in turnover margin, UTEP will pull this off.
