While the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic has interrupted the day-to-day lives of millions of people around the world, along with many of our sports and entertainment outlets, there are some individuals on the periphery who are affected in a fairly unique way: college athletes vying for a shot in pro sports. While the NFL Draft is still scheduled as planned, the opportunity for less high-profile players to showcase their skills at Pro Days around the country has disappeared. Michigan State tight end Matt Seybert took matters into his own hands on Tuesday, doing his own ‘virtual Pro Day’ on Twitter with a 225 lb bench press test.

Here is Seybert imploring the school not to cancel Pro Day last week:

And here is Seybert on Tuesday taking matters into his own hands:

Michigan State fans, friends, and players were quick to encourage Seybert as he continues to try and realize his dream of playing pro football:

Former Michigan State OL Jack Conklin signs 3-year deal with Cleveland Browns

Former Michigan State great Jack Conklin has signed a lucrative 3-year deal with the Cleveland Browns.

[jwplayer QqK6zJME]

The COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak has brought most of the global society to a halt… but not NFL free agency, which has been off to a fast start with a busy Monday that has kept sports fandom entertained. One former Michigan State offensive lineman, Jack Conklin, had a very fruitful Monday, signing a 3-year, $42-million deal with the Cleveland Browns with $30-million guaranteed.

Conklin, who is 25 years old, was drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 8th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. He had left Michigan State early after his junior year due to high demand at the professional level, and that bet he made on himself has paid off in spades.

Conklin made First-Team All-Pro back in the rookie season and has been a very solid offensive tackle for the Titans since then. Conklin will cash out on this short, but lucrative deal and then head back into free agency at the ripe young age of 28.

Favorite Spartans of all time bracket round one: Magic Johnson region

Voting is open for the first round of matchups in The SpartansWire Favorite Spartans ever bracket

Hello and welcome to the official start of the SpartansWire Favorite Spartans of all Time Tournament. Sure, that’s a terrible name, but at this point, who cares? It’s a pandemic outside. Fictional bracket names don’t matter right now.

Today I’m going to lay out the Magic Johnson region, which is highlighted by overall number one seed–you guessed it–Magic Johnson. Players will be pitted against each other and the winner will be decided exclusively by fan vote.

Here’s the full region for a quick refresher.

As with every region, there are a number of big names in the bracket without much separating the top seeds from the lower seeds.

Let’s get to the matchups!

NFL Draft to proceed as scheduled despite COVID-19 pandemic, public NFL Draft events canceled

Michigan State fans hoping to see names like Josiah Scott get drafted will still have that opportunity from April 23-25.

For those Michigan State Football fans who were still hoping to watch Spartan greats like Josiah Scott, Kenny Willekes, and Raequan Williams land in a new home via the NFL Draft in April, you are in luck. The NFL announced today that the NFL Draft will still take place as planned from April 23-25, although the format and broadcast could be seeing some changes due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

All the public NFL Draft events that were planned to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada will now be canceled. The NFL says that they are exploring ‘innovative options’ for how the process will be conducted so don’t be shocked if all we see of players is through a live video feed.

Michigan State had seven players participate in the NFL Combine this year. They are:

  • Joe Bachie
  • Brian Lewerke
  • Raequan Williams
  • Cody White
  • Darrell Stewart Jr.
  • Josiah Scott
  • Kenny Willekes

Former Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins gets two-year extension with Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins stays getting paid!

Sports may be on hold, but one former Spartan is still getting paid.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback–and former Spartan star–Kirk Cousins has signed a two-year extension with the team. The deal will keep him in Minnesota through the 2022 season. Cousins’ agent Mike McCartney posted the news on Twitter.

There have been no reports as to the financial figures of the deal. It stands to reason it would be lucrative given that Cousins is on the last year of a then-record breaking three-year $84 million fully guaranteed deal with Minnesota.

Extending the franchise quarterback will most likely allow the Vikings to smooth out Cousins’ cap hit over the next few years while giving their signal caller a bit more financial security.

Cousins has made just over $100 million in his eight-year NFL career, despite making less than $1 million the first four years of his career.

March is for brackets: Picking our favorite Michigan State Spartans of all time

You nominated ’em, now it’s time to see the bracket for your favorite Michigan State Spartans of all time.

Putting non-college basketball items in a 64-team bracket around mid-March has for years been the most clichéd post in the world of writing on the internet. Think of a topic and it has surely already been breacketized a million different ways. Movies? Yup. TV shows? Yup. Saturday Night Live cast members. That was an eventful one. Fast food? Yep, and its always a disaster. Pop culture bracket posts lacks any sense of creativity. It is a concept worn so thin that it is practically translucent. A slight gust of wind risks ripping the genre apart.

But dammit this year is different. We need brackets. Oh, do we ever need brackets.

With the cancellation of all of sports for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic, we all need something sports in our lives. And we’ll take anything whether its professional darts or ninth division Argentinian soccer. (They call it fútbol) I, for one, clamored for a rumored NCAA Tournament bracket put together by the selection committee; a last bit of false hope in a cold, dark March. Alas, that bracket would never come to be and my false hope could not even muster the energy the get its face out of the March mud.

So we need sports. Or something like sports. For now, this is my offering, and it’ll have to do. It’s a 64-person bracket of some of the most beloved Michigan State Spartans of all time. The goal: To name our favorite Spartan ever. The nominees were solicited on social media. Everybody in this bracket comes from that nomination process. Ranking the names started with some obvious top seeds and funneled down based loosely upon number of nominations. At a certain point, probably the five seeds, there are very little margins between nominees. This is all to say; I don’t give a single damn about your complaints about the seeding. It almost couldn’t be more unscientific and good god we’ve got a pandemic going on outside quit complaining about stupid stuff! (Just kidding, you can get mad about this if it makes you feel better. Maybe that will lead to you staying inside and typing angry things at me instead of going out to a crowded bar or something. I’m happy to play my part in the pursuit of better public health.) And if your favorite Spartan get left off the list . . . I’m sorry. You should have followed me on Twitter and nominated them.

Today is the bracket reveal. Voting will start will individual regions tomorrow.

Without much further ado . . .  here is the bracket!

[jwplayer QqK6zJME]
