MSU Football recruiting target, Detroit native Jamari Buddin commits to Penn State

Detroit native and major Michigan State recruiting target Jamari Buddin has committed to Penn State.

[jwplayer eG4DmfIS]

Well, this one hurts. Michigan State Football has had the full-court press on Jamari Buddin for months now, trying to do everything possible to recruit the 4-star Detroit-area standout, but it was all for naught. The Belleville High School linebacker announced today that he will be committing to Penn State in 2021, closing the chapter on the chances that he would stay in-state.

Penn State has had a lot of success recruiting in Detroit these past few years, and the Buddin story is just another example of why Michigan State needs a strong recruiter like Mel Tucker to come in and re-establish MSU as a top recruiter in Detroit. As of right now, Penn State and Michigan have really been the lead recruiters for top talent in Detroit and I would suspect that this a huge topic of conversation among the Michigan State staff.

Michigan State Football offers 4-star East Detroit WR Tayshawn Trent

MSU has sent a scholarship offer to 4-star East Detroit wide receiver Tayshawn Trent.

[jwplayer eG4DmfIS]

A big part of new Michigan State Football head coach Mel Tucker’s job will be to win the recruiting battle in Detroit, a city that produces a lot of talent that is heavily recruited by MSU, Michigan, Penn State, and more. It looks like the Spartans will enter competition to recruit a big name in the Detroit football scene as it was announced on Thursday that Michigan State has offered 2022 4-star wide receiver Tayshawn Trent out of East Detroit High School.

Trent already has offers out from Michigan and Penn State, two schools who frequently challenge the Spartans for recruits out of the Metro Detroit area. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him ranked as the No. 7 best player in the state of Michigan and the No. 36 best wide receiver in the 2022 recruiting class. The 247Sports ranking has him ranked a little lower as a 3-star and the No. 13 best player in the state.

At 6’4″, he certainly fits the profile of a Mel Tucker recruiting target.

Central Michigan tight end transfer Tony Poljan could be a great fit at Michigan State

Poljan grew up in the Lansing area and is a promising tight end prospect.

One man’s loss is another man’s gain.

That will be true of whichever college football team lands standout tight end Tony Poljan, who on Wednesday announced an intent to transfer out of Central Michigan University.

Poljan, a second-team All-MAC selection in 2019, will be a coveted player in the transfer market, as some NFL scouts have him as a potential late-round selection. Michigan State could have a leg up on the competition to secure the 6-foot-7 standout for a handful of reasons.

First, Poljan is from Lansing. He played his high school ball at Lansing Catholic and the Spartans recruited him back then. The problem was that MSU recruited Poljan as a tight end/athlete and Poljan was determined to play quarterback in college. Thus, he ended up at Central Michigan. Poljan mostly played ย quarterback at CMU for his first two seasons, with 147 passing attempts in 2018. He did mix in some snaps at receiver and tight end during those seasons. He switched to tight end full time for the 2019 season and caught 33 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns while putting his name on the NFL’s radar.

Second, Poljan has familial connections to MSU. His sister Rebecka is currently on the MSU volleyball team. Between growing up in the Lasning area and having a sibling on an MSU team, it’s a safe bet that Poljan is quite familiar with Michigan State, the campus, and the football team. He was on the CMU team that traveled to Spartan Stadium in 2018 and I’m sure is familiar with a handful of players on the Michigan State roster.

Third, MSU has a need at the position. Redshirt sophomore Trenton Gillison is the presumed starter at tight end and flashed some ability in 2019. Behind him there are a lot of question marks between Matt Dotson coming off a torn Achilles and a couple of converted defensive ends in Parks Gissinger and Adam Berghorst. Offensive coordinator Jay Johnson said shortly after his arrival to MSU that the tight end would be the “MVP” of the MSU offense. If that’s truly the case, having two really good options at the position would be more ideal than just one. Transferring up in mid-to-late July is going to be tough, and I’d bet Poljan is looking to go somewhere where snaps are available. He would certainly find that at MSU.

Lastly, Poljan is 6-foot-7 and we know how much Mel Tucker and co. like their tall players.

Tony Poljan and Michigan State could be a match made in transfer heaven. With Poljan’s abilities and connections to MSU and the Spartans’ need for help at tight end, they might just be what each other is looking for.

Michigan State RB Elijah Collins named to Doak Walker Award Watchlist

Michigan State running back Elijah Collins has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watchlist, given to the best running back in the country.

[jwplayer s7XWZWNR]

Michigan State running back Elijah Collins quickly established himself as the best rusher on the Spartans last year. In his redshirt freshman season, Collins was able to rush for 988 yards and 5 touchdowns, turning a lot of heads along the way. The college football world seems to have taken notice as it was announced on Wednesday that Collins has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watchlist.

The Doak Walker Award is awarded to the top running back in college football in the United States. Doak Walker was a standout running back at SMU. Walker also played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions.

The Award went to a Big Ten running back last year when it was awarded to Jonathan Taylor of Wisconsin, and now Collins will look to once again bring it back to the Big Ten.

Michigan State Football offers 2021 3-star CB Steffan Johnson

MSU has offered 2021 3-star cornerback Steffan Johnson, a player who is currently committed to Rutgers.

Michigan State Football continues to chip away at their 2021 recruiting needs, and today it was announced that they have offered 2021 3-star cornerback Steffan Johnson from Venice, Florida. Johnson is currently committed to Rutgers.

According to Stephen Brooks of 247Sports, Johnson is a good friend and teammate of current MSU commit Charles Brantley.

Johnson is the No. 129 ranked cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class and the No. 195 ranked player in Florida by the 247Sports rankings. As mentioned, Johnson is currently committed to Rutgers, but his relationship with Brantley shouldn’t be discounted, and Spartan fans have already experienced the heartbreak of a decommit in Gabe ‘Spida’ Nealy and karma says that MSU is due to experience the other side of that equation soon.
