Tracker: Every new Michigan State football staff hire under new head coach Jonathan Smith

Tracking every new Michigan State football staff hire under new head coach Jonathan Smith

The Jonathan Smith era at Michigan State football is here, and things are moving quickly, as Smith assembles his staff with an attempt to get up to speed and prepared for recruiting, transfer portal moves, and more.

It is very interesting to see what Smith will do with his staff. Oregon State is a team that had less talent than MSU has the last two years, but has had way more success in that span than Michigan State (let’s just call it how it is), and several of the Beavers’ assistant coaches had earned a lot of respect around the country.

However, Smith won’t just be able to copy and paste his staff from Oregon State. It’s possible that at least one of those guys (likely Trent Bray, but we’ll see) will be a prime candidate to become the next head coach at Oregon State, and Smith will also need to grab a few assistant coaches who have experience recruiting in the Midwest and the South, which was a knock on Smith considering he’s spent his whole career recruiting on the West Coast.

Below, we will keep track of every new hire brought in by Smith to fill out his staff.

Michigan State defensive backs coach Jim Salgado going to back to NFL with Washington Commanders

Former Michigan State defensive backs coach Jim Salgado going to back to NFL with the Washington Commanders.

Michigan State hired Jim Salgado before the 2023 season to assist coaching defensive backs with Harlon Barnett. Salgado came to MSU from the Buffalo Bills, where he served as a defensive backs coach for four seasons.

Now, with the coaching changes in East Lansing, Salgado has officially found his new spot in the NFL, getting a job with the Washington Commanders.

Ten Potential candidates to be the next defensive coordinator of Michigan State football

10 possible candidates that can be the next defensive coordinator at Michigan State

With the hiring of Jonathan Smith as Michigan State’s next head football coach, it also means that there will be a new staff coming to East Lansing. While Smith has already gotten a huge jump on hiring his staff, click here to view who has been hired by Smith so far, he has yet to announce who will be serving as the defensive coordinator for his staff.

Smith had two defensive coordinators throughout his tenure at Oregon State, so there are several options and possibilities for Smith to explore.

Let’s take a look at some of the potential candidates that could potentially be in the mix for MSU’s defensive coordinator position:

Oregon State DB coach Blue Adams coming to Michigan State football program

DB coach Blue Adams, who possesses an impressive resume, is heading to East Lansing with Jonathan Smith:

Jonathan Smith is continuing to build his staff in East Lansing, which so far is comprised of staff members he had at Oregon State, and that has continued.

Oregon State defensive backs coach Blue Adams will be headed to East Lansing with Smith. It is unclear if he will be the lone defensive backs coach, or if Smith has plans to retain Harlon Barnett or Jim Salgado to split defensive back coaching duties.

Adams is a Miami (FL) native, who played college football at Cincinnati before a nine year professional career. He got into coaching after his pro career and has a solid resume:

Michigan State football: Mel Tucker is “very confident” in MSU’s staff

It appears Mel Tucker is fully confident in his staff at MSU amid tough stretch

Fans took to social media to voice there displeasure with Michigan State following the team’s 34-7 loss to Minnesota. A lot of that disstain was put towards Michigan State’s coaching staff, especially on the defensive side of the ball. The Spartans not only seem to have not progressed at all, but it appears that the team has regressed from last year to this year on the defensive side of the ball, much to the disgust of the fans.

In his post game press conference, Mel Tucker was asked about his staff and he doubled down on his confidence in his staff.
