Jim Harbaugh reacts to questionable penalty called on Tarik Black vs. MSU

It was a weird moment in the Wolverines’ win over MSU on Saturday, and Jim Harbaugh was rather animated discussing it.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was a weird moment in the game on Saturday.

Michigan wideout Tarik Black got his sole reception, a 27-yard catch with MSU back Josh Butler draped all over him. As the play ended, a flag came out, and it assuredly looked to be a defensive pass interference call that would be declined by the Wolverines.

Instead, it was called a catch, with an assessed 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Black, with the note that he was taunting.

What did Black do to deserve the call? Well, he turned and flexed.

Wait, what?

On Monday, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was rather animated discussing the penalty, noting that it wasn’t really anything close to egregious.

“We have a question in on it right now,” Harbaugh said. “But it’s a good question. I think he just flexed one. It should probably be spelled out. I watch a lot of TV, watch a lot of football games, and I see a lot of gestures. I remember that (cutting your throat) being something you couldn’t do. Be a good thing to talk about.”

“Curious to know as well. Emphasis not made at a player. Tarik’s wasn’t at a player, an opposing player. Be good to get some clarity.”

For now, Michigan will move on with two games left — a road game against the 7-3 Indiana Hoosiers and the final contest against arch-rival Ohio State.

Michigan players comment on ‘dirty’ Panasiuk brothers at MSU

Wolverines players react to the late hit by Jacub Panasiuk and why they feel both MSU brothers are ‘dirty.’

[jwplayer cTE7nfAE-XNcErKyb]

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — With it being a bitter, in-state rivalry game, you knew that Michigan vs. MSU would be a chippy affair, despite the disparity in records.

The Wolverines and Spartans were two teams heading in different directions, with MSU coming to Ann Arbor with just 4 wins to 5 losses, while Michigan was in search of its 8th win of the year.

The game was called closely by the officials, but even then, some bridges were crossed.

Take the play of Michigan State defensive end Jacub Panasiuk, who got himself ejected after two personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the final one being a very late hit on Michigan QB Shea Patterson, well after he released the ball.

Naturally, the Michigan players didn’t take too kindly to the hit, but, as senior left tackle Jon Runyan Jr. says, it was par for the course from either of the Panasiuk brothers who play for the Spartans.

“I didn’t see it at the time — I always knew No. 96 was a kind of dirty player, him and his brother,” Runyan said. “I really don’t care too much for them. I made clear of that. You can go back and watch the film — I have a play where I cleaned up 96, took him 20 yards up the field. Not really a big fan of him.

“I don’t really wanna talk trash about him, but I don’t like that guy. I don’t like how he plays the game of football. That was disgusting what he did. Completely unnecessary. You could tell he was frustrated, because he couldn’t do anything against me or Jalen (Mayfield) all game. He had to come up with a different way to affect the game and ended up taking himself out.”

“I kinda wanted to fight him,” Michigan tight end Sean McKeon answered when asked about the late hit by Jacub Panasiuk. “But obviously can’t! A lot of refs right there. Try not to make the situation worse. They did the right thing by getting him out of the game.”

The MSU players, according to the Michigan players, did their share of trash talk, extracurricular activities, and the like to try to get into the Wolverines’ heads.

After the game, senior safety Josh Metellus praised his team for playing clean and between the whistles, noting that the Wolverines try to play football the right way — “They try to take it to a level that isn’t playing football. We play football over here – I don’t know what they do over there, but we play football, and it showed today.”

As for the Michigan side, at least as Runyan can attest for himself, he wasn’t about to start engaging with MSU at the same level.

For him, he wanted to let his play do the talking.

“I really don’t like talking trash,” Runyan said. “Sometimes my emotions can get the best of me at the end of a game. I kinda let my game do the talking. No. 48 over there (Kenny Willekes) — he’s a good pass rusher. He actually talks a lot of trash — not as much this year, he did last year. Again, couldn’t really do much against me and Jalen. That’s a credit to our preparation and the kind of game plan we had going in there.”

And with a 44-10 victory, the Wolverines certainly did let their play make the ultimate statement.

Up next, Michigan travels to Bloomington to take on an insurgent Indiana squad that’s currently 7-3 on the season. Kickoff is slated for 3:30PM EST.

Michigan State Football stuck at no. 9 in latest Big Ten Power Rankings after loss to U of M

Michigan State is ranked all the way down at number 9 in the Detroit Free Press’ latest Big Ten Power Rankings after their big loss to Michigan.

[jwplayer XS9Z4UFR]

I could take the Wisconsin loss. I dealt with the Ohio State loss. The Penn State loss? Still coping but I was getting through it. Losing to Michigan? Nope. Cannot handle it. Absolute despair is being inflicted on my fandom. Michigan State’s loss to in-state rival U of M not only crushed the fanbase, it will also cement MSU as one of the teams at the bottom of the Big Ten Power Rankings from the Detroit Free Press, where they are currently stuck at number 9.

Here is what the Free Press said about the Spartans:

“There was a time this season when Michigan State was ranked. Hard to believe, right? Spartans haven’t won since late September, and in many of their recent games they haven’t been competitive. Take for instance Michigan State’s 44-10 loss to Michigan last Saturday. That one turned ugly – much like the mess Mark Dantonio’s program has become.”

Yikes.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Fresh off a 44-10 drubbing of in-state rival MSU, the Wolverines have no time to rest, with a 7-3 Indiana game on the docket.

The Hoosiers always play Michigan tough, especially in Bloomington, with the last two contests going to overtime. But the maize and blue have to be very wary this time around, with arch rival Ohio State up the following week, leaving little room for error.

WolverinesWire’s Isaiah Hole is on the ground, and will bring you LIVE updates starting at 12PM EST.

When you break Tom Brady’s record in a rivalry game and have your best performance in a Michigan uniform, you deserve special recognition.

Such is the case for Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson, who eclipsed 300 passing yards for the first time as a Wolverine, throwing for 384 yards and four touchdowns in an electric performance against rival MSU.

Even the most ardent ‘Shea-haters’ have got to give him credit for this one, as he threw all octet what was supposed to be one of the nation’s best defenses. Sure, the Spartans are ranked No. 31 after the game when it comes to defending the pass, but Patterson picked a good time to show he still has the capability to hurl the ball and find open receivers, especially with Indiana and Ohio State up next.

His performance was so good, the Big Ten honored him on Monday morning, naming him co-offensive player of the week, along with Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.

The Wolverines will need that type of performance from him going forward, especially against the Buckeyes, who has the nation’s No. 1 defense as of current.

Big Ten football power rankings after week 12: Movement at the top?

We’ve got the latest Big Ten football power rankings. Is there some movement at the top with Minnesota’s loss? What about Ohio State?

The season is now hitting the home stretch in the Big Ten and in college football in general. We’re now eleven weeks into the college football season, and we have a fairly good feel about who’s in this thing, and who’s not. Michigan continues to be a bit resurgent, Ohio State has clearly separated  itself, and everyone else is looking to position themselves for the postseason.

We’re here to make sense of it all, and teams like Penn State and Wisconsin are still right there for a trip to Indy.

As we do each week, here’s your Big Ten football power rankings after the latest round of games. As always, give me a break on these, after being in vacation in Mexico, I had to catch up on This is Us, A Million Little Things, and The Purge. The struggle is real.

14. Rutgers – (Last week 14)

Things aren’t good when a 35-point loss is a moral victory, but that’s what we had when the Scarlet Knights were able to put up 21 points against the Ohio State defense Saturday.

13. Maryland – (Last week 13)

Nothing to see here really. The Terps were on a bye week and it’s still the same Maryland team that’s quite on the season.

12. Northwestern – (Last week 12)

The Wildcats stepped out of conference and finally got another win. It’s still an awful season for Pat Fitzerald and crew.

11. Nebraska – (Last week 11)

Another week, another loss for everybody’s preseason dark horse in the West Division. The ‘Huskers now have to win their last two games just to get to a bowl. That’s sounds like a proverbial corn maze with a gain against Iowa to end things. It’s doable, but you have to make all the right turns.
