Jaguars vs. Jets: Key matchups

Jaguars vs. Jets: Key matchups

The Jacksonville Jaguars head into Week 15 coming off a refreshing victory at Tennessee last Sunday. It’s only the team’s third win of what has otherwise been a tumultuous losing season.

This weekend provides a favorable opportunity to add another mark to the win column, although the team’s draft positioning may once again falter. The Jaguars host the New York Jets in 2024’s first matchup between teams mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

Jaguars Wire takes a closer look at the key matchups in Jacksonville’s next-to-last home game of the season.

Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr. vs. Jets CB Sauce Gardner

It’s becoming clearer that the Jaguars rookie sensation is already one of the best players on the roster. He was a key reason for the team’s success in Nashville last weekend with eight catches on 12 targets for 86 yards, putting his season total at 54 grabs for 851 yards and six touchdown receptions.

This weekend, Thomas will go one-on-one against one of the best cornerbacks in football, Sauce Gardner.

The Jets have not had the season they were hoping for and are a mess of a franchise at the moment. However, the two-time All-Pro Gardner remains a bright spot, and winning against him in coverage is no easy feat.

That said, Gardner has had some struggles this season, especially on deeper crossing patterns, which could favor Thomas in space and offer run-after-catch opportunities against man coverage.

If Thomas has yet another productive day against Gardner and the Jets secondary, Jacksonville has a chance at winning two games in a row.

Jaguars LT Walker Little vs. Jets pass rushers

There’s a reason the Jaguars extended Walker Little to a three-year, $40.5 million contract. His play since becoming the team’s starting left tackle hasn’t been perfect but has been trending upward in recent weeks, especially in pass protection.

According to Next Gen Stats, Little’s quarterback pressure rate is the fourth-lowest among starting left tackles with at least 150 snaps.

Little faces a daunting task this weekend, however. His likely opponent on most snaps, Jets defensive end Will McDonald IV, has 10 sacks and 52 quarterback pressures on the season.

The Jets are like the Jaguars defensively as they have more trust in their four-down linemen to generate pressure by moving them around the line, rather than pulling out all the stops like some teams.

Little will need to be prepared for whoever New York will throw his way. Don’t forget about Haason Reddick, Michael Clemons and, occasionally, Quinnen Williams.

Jaguars RB Tank Bigsby vs. Jets run defense

Bigsby has established himself as Jacksonville’s running back of the future while putting the team in a tough position with his fellow running mate Travis Etienne Jr. While that is not the topic of this section, how Bigsby can beat New York’s run defense is.

The Jets rank No. 16 in the NFL in rushing yards allowed (119.9) and run stuff percentage (17.1%), and have allowed the 11th-most expected points added (EPA) rushing.

This could be another week where Bigsby sees another 20-plus touch game. The key to turning usage into production is trusting the blocks of interior linemen, center Mitch Morse and guards Brandon Scherff and Ezra Cleveland.

Bigsby is one of the league’s better space-creators and the Jets have allowed the ninth-most yards after contact per attempt (3.14) in the NFL. Bigsby’s 4.9 yards per attempt on inside-designed runs are the seventh-most in the NFL this season, according to Next Gen Stats.

While running backs may not matter to some, Bigsby will play a key part in Jacksonville’s chances at victory this weekend. Bringing him down won’t be an easy feat for New York.

Punches thrown in heated joint practice between Panthers and Jets

Some fists were flying during Thursday’s joint practice between the Panthers and Jets.

Ding, ding.

In what may be the least surprising development of any joint practice in NFL history, squabbles and skirmishes were abound between the Carolina Panthers and New York Jets on Thursday morning.

The first fit of fisticuffs went down when Panthers wideout Terrace Marshall Jr. bested Jets cornerback D.J. Reed on a fade ball from quarterback Bryce Young. After the fourth-year receiver reeled in the pass for an impressive touchdown, he flipped the ball at Reed.

Reed, of course, didn’t take too kindly to the gesture. Things got heated, the teams convened and Reed proceeded to even fling the ball at Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard.

Then, a second scuffle would break out—this time, between Panthers running back Mike Boone and Jets defensive lineman Michael Clemons. Per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, Clemons took a swing on Boone and Boone would reciprocate with an attempt of his own . . .

And if two fights weren’t enough, then how about a third . . . ?

Welcome to the dog dawg days of summer!

Watch – Jets defensive end Michael Clemons is putting in offseason work

Michael Clemons is looking good this offseason.

Michael Clemons is certainly putting in the effort this offseason as the New York Jets edge is training with one of the top defensive line coaches in the nation.

Set for a very important third season in the NFL with the Jets, Clemons is looking to bounce back in 2024. Last season was a bit of a step backward for Clemons in terms of his production.

As a rookie in 2022, Clemons had 36 total tackles and 2.5 sacks. Last year, he had 27 total tackles and he shared a sack.

This offseason, Clemons is working out with Brandon Jordan, a highly-regarded pass rush coach who works with players such as Von Miller in the offseason.

He posted this video of Clemons’ working out on a recovery day. Clemons is focusing on his handwork in this drill:

Clemons, who played his college football for Texas A&M, looks absolutely jacked in this video, for what it is worth.

If Clemons can take a step forward in his development this season, it could and would be big for the Jets. A healthy and productive Clemons as part of a deep edge rotation would be a huge lift for a defense that projects to be top-three in the NFL this season.

Bills’ Dion Dawkins gives NSFW thoughts on Jets’ Micheal Clemons: ‘B—- boy’

NSFW Dion Dawkins interview…

Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins gave some very candid, NSFW comments about New York Jets defensive lineman Micheal Clemons.

The two do have a history together as dust ups between the Bills and Jets involving them both have occured. On one occasion, Clemons was ejected from a game. In another, Dawkins and Clemons got into a shoving match in the tunnel of Highmark Stadium after the final whistle.

However, Dawkins really let people know how he felt speaking to Vlad TV.

Dawkins went on to explain how much he “hates” the Jets, and specifically on Clemons, Dawkins called him a “B—- boy,” and then some.

Dawkins and his very free speaking, two-minute interview clip can be found below:

Official Carl Paganelli suffers bloody lip during Dolphins-Jets scrap

Jets lineman Michael Clemons was ejected for contact with official Carl Paganelli

The New York Jets were frustrated and it boiled over on a PAT during their game with the Miami Dolphins on Friday at MetLife.

Michael Clemons was involved in a melee after the point that made it 27-6 in favor of Miami.

While the fracas continued, the Jets’ defensive lineman accidentally made contact with official Carl Paganelli’s lip, bloodying it.

Underdogs to watch in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick goes to the film to predict some underdogs bound to shine in their Week 1 NFL matchups

As the 2022 NFL regular season gets underway, there are a few under dogs who are bound to stand out in week one.

It’s no fun to point out the Pro Bowl players or elite starters who have already made a name for themselves. Instead, there are some under-the-radar starters and second-string players who will have a chance this week to prove their dominance. Whether it’s a favorable matchup versus their opponent or continuing their performance from preseason, these are a few guys to keep our eyes on.

Let’s go to the film and check them out!

Giants’ Tyrod Taylor carted to locker room after taking big hit

New York Giants quarterback Tyrod Taylor left the Week 4 preseason game with an apparent back injury after taking a big hit.

It’s the final preseason game of 2022, and the New York Giants already have a laundry list of injuries. The Giants opted not to play starting quarterback Daniel Jones today, likely in light of the offensive line injuries, so Tyrod Taylor got the nod. Unfortunately, toward the end of the first quarter, Taylor took a big hit.

Taylor was leading the Giants on a drive when he scrambled to the right after coming under pressure. New York Jets defensive end Michael Clemons. At 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, Clemons is considerably larger than Taylor’s 6-foot-1, 217-pound frame.

Taylor managed to jog off the field but was taken to the medical tent for further evaluation and eventually carted to the locker room with an apparent back injury.

Taylor has been in the NFL since 2011 but has largely been a backup save for his three years with the Buffalo Bills. Slated to continue his role as a backup with the Giants doesn’t make his injury any less devastating. Third-string quarterback Davis Webb stepped in for Taylor.

3 players to watch in Jets’ second preseason game

A couple of players ready to shine in the national spotlight Monday.

With the possibility of the Jets not playing their starters Monday against the Falcons, there are some players who now have more of a chance to really make a statement and make their case for the 53-man roster, or at the very least, the practice squad. Let’s take a look at a couple of those players to keep an eye on in the national spotlight.

NFL Preseason Week 1: Where to watch the Texas A&M rookie debuts

NFL Preseason Week 1: Where to watch the Texas A&M rookie debuts

Football season is finally here! With the 2022 college football season starting in 15 days, and Texas A&M kicking off their season on September 3rd, the NFL Preseason Week 1 is officially upon us. Let’s take a short trip back to late April during the 2022 NFL Draft, as four former Aggies were taken in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th rounds, while several notable players were signed as undrafted free agents days after the conclusion of the draft. Here are the players drafted this year, and those ready to make their NFL debut this weekend:

  • Round 1, Pick 15 for the Houston Texans: Guard, Kenyon Green.
  • Round 3, Pick 84 for the Pittsburgh Steelers: Defensive lineman, DeMarvin Leal
  • Round 4, Pick 117 for the New York Jets: Defensive end, Micheal Clemons
  • Round 4, Pick 123 for the Los Angeles Chargers: Running back, Isaiah Spiller
  •   UDFA for the Tennessee Titans: Defensive lineman, Jayden Peevy,
  • UDFA for the Pittsburgh Steelers: Defensive end, Tyree Johnson (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the San Franciso 49ers: Safety, Leon O’Neal (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the Dallas Cowboys: Linebacker, Aaron Hansford (recently cut)
  • UDFA for the Green Bay Packers; Offensive lineman, Jahmir Johnson (early cut)

Look for Green, Leal, Clemson, and Spiller to shine as they look to earn their spot with the franchise that took a chance on them, continuing to show the toughness and relentless workmanship developed during their time at Texas A&M. Now, here is the game, place, and time each player will be appearing in this weekend.
