Mercer DB Tavion McCarthy hit the very top sticks on a vertical jump tester for an eye-popping 44-inch vert

WOW!!!

Tavion McCarthy isn’t a household name.

The Mercer defensive back is a senior coming off a season in which he totaled two interceptions and 52 total tackles. But if you’re a team in the NFL Draft and you see the video of what McCarthy did during his pro day, you might start to wonder if you should spend a pick on him in April.

That’s because McCarthy showed off a 44-inch vert by hitting every stick on one of those vertical jump testers, and you can see from the reaction in the room from everyone was flipping out over this. And they should!

Former Tiger hired by Navy as their new offensive line coach

Former Tiger is moving on to Navy as their new offensive line coach.

Another former Tiger is moving on to a new program and taking the next step in their coaching career.

The Navy football program announced Wednesday that former Clemson center Jay Guillermo has joined their staff as their new offensive line coach. He moves on from Mercer and joins Tommy Laurendine, who is also on offensive line coach duties after previously coaching the full backs.

“My family and I are excited to be a part of the Navy Football family,” said Guillermo. “It is an honor to be a part of the great history and tradition that surrounds the Naval Academy. I am greatly looking forward to working with the young men here and creating a family amongst our offensive linemen that lives on and off the field. I am incredibly thankful to Coach Newberry for this opportunity.”

Alabama’s last 10 matchups against FCS programs

Alabama has outscored FCS opponents 498-53 in previous 10 match ups

The Alabama Crimson Tide has dominated at the highest level of college football for the past decade and a half under head coach Nick Saban. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that teams from the Football Championship Series (FCS) haven’t put up much of a fight against the Tide.

In the Tide’s previous ten match-ups against FCS opponents, Alabama has outscored them 498-53. Yikes.

So, the Austin Peay Governors certainly have a lot to handle this weekend as they travel to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama. The game will kick off at 12:00 p.m. EST on the SEC Network.

Alabama may be eliminated from playoff contention, but the team still has some anger to let out after the two tough losses. Coach Saban won’t let this team quit either as he still has aspirations of a 10-win season and New Years Six bowl appearance.

Focus, discipline will be key for Auburn to create more turnovers

Bryan Harsin wants to see his secondary create more turnovers going forward. Safety Zion Puckett has the solution to the issue.

Auburn did many things well in last Saturday’s 42-16 win over Mercer.

On offense, Auburn racked up 497 total yards, had two quarterbacks reach the 100-yard passing mark, and running backs [autotag]Tank Bigsby[/autotag] and [autotag]Jarquez Hunter[/autotag] combined to score five rushing touchdowns. Defensively, Auburn held Mercer to 271 total yards, and linebacker [autotag]Cam Riley[/autotag] had a breakout game by recording 15 tackles.

Bryan Harsin was pleased with his team’s overall effort last Saturday, but, as many coaches are, was not completely satisfied with every aspect of the game — specifically his team’s lack of creating turnovers in the game and leaving receivers open.

“If that ball is in the air, just speaking from an offensive coordinator standpoint, if they’re going to put the ball in the air, we should have a chance to go compete for the ball,” Harsin said during Monday’s press conference.  “That’s what I think you do at the back end when you have a good football team.”

Harsin went on to say that he has set a high standard for his secondary, but believes that his unit is good enough to make a play on the ball if given the opportunity.

Out of Mercer quarterback Fred Payton’s 36 attempted passes last Saturday, Auburn was only able to get a hand on five of them. What does the Auburn secondary need to do in order to disrupt their opponent’s passing game? Safety [autotag]Zion Puckett[/autotag] says that focus is key.

“To get more turnovers, I believe that we need to read more of our keys, be more disciplined with our eyes, and basically focus on everything that we have to do each play,” Puckett said Monday afternoon.

This week’s opponent, San Jose State, found success throwing the football in their season-opening win over Portland State last Saturday. Spartan quarterback Chevan Cordeiro threw for 239 yards and a touchdown.

Puckett says that with proper focus and discipline, Auburn’s secondary should improve in limiting San Jose State’s air attack.

“They are a pretty good team I feel like,” Puckett said. “We have to respect the run game and the pass game, but as long as we know our keys and do what we do and do the right techniques, I think that we will be pretty good.”

Auburn meets San Jose State for the third time in history on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game can be seen on ESPNU.

Auburn vs Mercer Game Preview

Why Mercer Will Win

The Bears were terrific in their opener against Morehead State in a 63-13 win.

The running game went off, the team carried the production on third downs over from 2021, and now Auburn has to gear up to handle both lines that come into the season strong.

The Tigers aren’t rebuilding, but they’re going to be looking to crank up the inconsistent offense and the defense needs a whole lot of tweaking in the back seven.

Mercer isn’t the pushover offensively that Auburn might like, but …

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Auburn Will Win

Auburn has the defensive front to make Mercer try throwing.

It’s not that the Bears can’t – Fred Payton was on against Morehead State with 248 yards and four scores on just 11 completions – but that’s not how they’re going to want to move the ball.

As good as the Mercer defense should be, the pass rush has to show up. It was bad last year, it didn’t come up with a sack in the opener, and all of that means TJ Finley will get plenty of time to operate.

Auburn will have a good balance, and …

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Everything will be fine after about a quarter.

Give Auburn a little bit to wake up – Mercer might have an early lead for a little longer than anyone would like – but it’ll all kick in, the Tiger offense will do a little of everything to mix it all up, and the D will hold firm against the Bear ground game in the second half.

It won’t be perfect, but it’s Week 1. It’s why you schedule Mercer.

Delaware charts massive comeback, overtakes Mercer for Golfweek Fall Challenge title

Mercer looked to have an insurmountable lead at True Blue Golf Club, but Delaware pulled off a comeback anyway.

Before Delaware teed off in the final round of its season opener on Tuesday, head coach Patty Post dredged up a pre-COVID memory. Playing in the Loyola Intercollegiate in February 2020, before the spring season was shut down in light of the pandemic, Delaware posted a school-record round of 21 under.

“I said this is probably the best course for you guys after that one,” Post said of revisiting that round at True Blue Golf Club in Myrtle Beach on Tuesday. “It was not a big speech, it was not bringing everybody together.”

At the time, Mercer’s lead at the Golfweek Fall Challenge looked insurmountable. The Bears had played the first 36 holes in 29 under and Delaware was trailing them by 17 shots.

Delaware’s four counters contributed three birdies on True Blue’s first hole and the chase began. Ultimately, the Blue Hens went 18 under in the final round as Mercer cooled off to play that round in even par. That gave Delaware the one-shot victory at 30 under.

Scores: Golfweek Fall Challenge

“We all know at True Blue – the getable holes are the first 15,” said Post. “Then 16, 17 and 18 is going to be where if there’s any fluctuation with a bogey or two, it’s going to be on those holes coming in.”

Post made sure to plant herself at the closing gauntlet, and Delaware’s counters skated through No. 16 with three pars and a bogey and posted four pars at No. 17.

Players input their own scores during the tournament, so the standings were no secret.

“They’re seeing it,” Post said of the run her team was making. “You don’t want them to but they are.”

By the time Delaware’s No. 1 player Roberto Nieves reached the 18th hole, the Blue Hens had a one-shot lead. Delaware’s women’s team had crossed the street from Caledonia Golf Club, where they were competing in the women’s division of the Fall Challenge, and crowded the porch overlooking True Blue’s 18th green to see the finish.

Nieves sailed his approach shot past a front hole location and over a ridge in the middle of the green, leaving himself a 15-foot comebacker. Despite three-putting there, Delaware players erupted at the team’s one-shot victory.

No. 18 had ultimately been the decider, with Delaware playing the hole in 1 over and Mercer going 6 over there.

Post has been at the helm for the Blue Hens for five years and the Golfweek Fall Challenge marked the team’s first win in her tenure. It was the first win period since 2016.

“I think it just gives them confidence that they are capable,” she said.

Mercer head coach Jason Payne, who returned this season after coaching the Bears from 2003-2007 (his first head-coaching gig), has a motto that’s fitting for the way Tuesday’s final nine holes unfolded.

Payne is one of the masterminds behind the Any Given Tuesday social media platform in college golf. The idea that anything can happen on any given Tuesday (the day on which college golf tournaments typically finish) certainly played out at True Blue.

“It was great golf, it was pressure packed coming down the stretch,” Payne said. “Again I can’t say enough about how well Delaware played.”

Mercer had spent much of the past few weeks qualifying back home in Macon, Georgia, in 100-degree heat. After that grind, teeing it up at True Blue, a getable course with generous fairways, presented an opportunity to score that Payne’s men took advantage of.

“While no one is pleased to finish second at a tournament and give up the lead we had, if anything it will leave you a little hungry,” Payne said.

The season is young.

POSTGAME: Alabama takes down Mercer, exposes some hiccups

Alabama earns the win and looks forward to Florida.

The Alabama Crimson Tide took down Mercer 48-14 to advance to 2-0 as they get ready to face off against Florida next week on the road in Gainesville.

If the box score was all that was looked at, Alabama seemed just as dominant as ever. However, those who watched the game understands that the Alabama offense was not as cohesive as they appeared last week against the Miami.

Bryce Young went 19 for 27, throwing for 227 yards and three touchdowns. JoJo Earle, John Metchie III and Jameson Williams were the big three targets for Young.

Earle, though, definitely made sure his presence was known, and many Alabama fans are now keen to him being the team’s new Jaylen Waddle-style star.

Jase McClellan came up big time, putting up a touchdown hat-trick. He scored two on offense and one on a blocked punt.

The defense remained just as strong as they did last week. The absence of Chris Allen led to Drew Sanders filling in as the starter, and he held his own.

Star linebacker Will Anderson went down early in the third quarter with a lower leg injury and did not return.

Two interceptions from the Crimson Tide. One from Marcus Banks, and the other from freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Mercer was held to only 236 yards of offense and two touchdowns. One of those touchdowns came on a 60-yard pass that caught the Crimson Tide secondary sleeping.

Injury update on Alabama LB Will Anderson

An update on Alabama LB Will Anderson’s injury.

The Crimson Tide lost outside linebacker and team leader Will Anderson for the remainder of the home-opening contest against Mercer due to a lower leg injury. Anderson walked off the field and into the locker room without any help.

Cole Cubelic of SEC Network reported that Anderson would not be returning due to a lower leg injury.

Aaron Suttles from the Athletic took to Twitter to report that he has received word that while Anderson will not be returning to the game, the lower leg injury is not believed to be major.

More tests will likely be administered soon to diagnose the issue.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover the Crimson Tide and report on Will Anderson’s injury and recovery.
