Grading the Dolphins linebackers after their 2023 season

A look at Miami’s linebackers, and the year they had in 2023.

The Miami Dolphins finished their 2023 campaign with an 11-6 record and made the postseason for the second time in as many years under head coach Mike McDaniel. Unfortunately, it came to an end with a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round.

While other teams are in the midst of their playoff run, it’s time to do some reflecting on the team in South Florida.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be reviewing and evaluating different positions for the Dolphins in 2023. Today, we’ll look at the linebackers.

Dolphins sign LB Melvin Ingram to their active roster

The Dolphins moved a veteran LB to their active roster from the practice squad.

The Miami Dolphins have had a number of injuries at linebacker in recent weeks, as they’ve lost Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel, Cameron Goode and Alexander Johnson for the season.

After signing Justin Houston and Bruce Irvin on Tuesday, the Dolphins had one open roster spot left, and they filled it by signing Melvin Ingram off of their own practice squad on Wednesday.

Ingram, 34, was elevated for Miami’s final three games of the season, recording seven tackles (one for a loss) and 1.5 sacks on 47% of the team’s defensive snaps.

The Dolphins filled Ingram’s practice squad spot with Malik Reed, who the team was reported to sign on Tuesday.

With all of the losses at the position, it wouldn’t be surprising to see all three new members of the roster and practice squad play on Saturday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Dolphins elevate LB, CB from practice squad for matchup with the Bills

It’s his third elevation of the year.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with two players ruled out and two questionable for their Week 18 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squads elevations to bring up veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram and cornerback Ethan Bonner to the active roster for the game.

Ingram, 34, has been elevated in each of the Dolphins’ previous two matchups, playing 30% of the team’s defensive snaps in those contests. he’s recorded just two total tackles this year. However, with Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips now both out for the year, he may be asked to fill a more prominent role going forward.

Bonner, 24, has played two games an undrafted rookie this season, playing 26 special teams snaps and 11 on defense. He’s recorded one tackle and pass defensed in those two games. With Xavien Howard out with an injury, Bonner may be asked to fill in a bit on defense again this week.

Dolphins elevate veteran LB for matchup vs. Ravens

Miami brings a veteran up to the active roster for his second game.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with one player out, one doubtful and seven questionable for their Week 17 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use one of their practice squad elevations to bring up veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram to the active roster for the game.

Ingram, 34, had been unsigned until a few backs when he was brought back on Miami’s practice squad. He made his 2023 debut last week, playing 21 defensive snaps (32%). As he’s eased into the rotation, Ingram will probably continue floating around that 30% mark for now. This is his second elevation, so he’ll have one more remaining, which will likely be used next week against the Buffalo Bills.

Dolphins elevate veteran LB and rookie CB for matchup with Cowboys

Miami calls up rookie DB and veteran LB to the active roster for Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with one starter out and seven other members of their roster questionable for their Week 16 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squad elevations, bringing up rookie cornerback Ethan Bonner and veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram to the active roster.

Bonner, 24, made his professional debut last week against the New York Jets. He made an impressive pass break-up on the sideline in the contest that got his teammates and coaches excited. This is his second elevation, so he’ll have just one more this year.

Ingram, 34, spent last season with the Dolphins but remained unsigned this year until Miami brought him back to their practice squad earlier in the month. It’s unclear how much the former first-round pick will play, but he’ll probably be eased into a rotation in Vic Fangio’s defense for now.

Dolphins signing LB Melvin Ingram to their practice squad

Miami is bringing back a LB from last year’s team.

The Miami Dolphins have been looking for help to fill in on the edge since Jaelan Phillips suffered a torn Achilles a few backs.

After signing Jason Pierre-Paul, the Dolphins have added another veteran pass-rusher, as they’ve signed Melvin Ingram to their practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Ingram, 34, most recently played for the Dolphins last season. He recorded 22 total tackles (seven for a loss), 10 quarterback hits, six sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and a pass defensed while playing 45% of the team’s snaps.

The former South Carolina Gamecock will likely come in and play a depth/rotational role for Vic Fangio’s defense, who could use another body on the edge.

Dolphins work out LB who spent 2022 with the team

The Dolphins are still looking for help on the edge.

The Miami Dolphins have had a number of injuries at linebacker in recent weeks.

Jaelan Phillips suffered a torn Achilles, Jerome Baker is on injured reserve with an MCL and even Alexander Johnson, from their practice squad, torn his Achilles.

Now, Miami is looking to add more help on the edge, as they hosted Melvin Ingram for a workout on Tuesday.

Ingram, 34, was originally a first-round pick of the San Diego Chargers back in 2012. He spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Chargers before splitting 2021 between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs.

He most recently played for the Dolphins last season, playing in 45% of the team’s defensive snaps in 17 games. With Miami, Ingram recorded 22 total tackles (seven for a loss), 10 quarterback hits, six sacks, two fumbles recovered, one forced fumble and one pass defensed.

The former South Carolina Gamecock also earned Defensive Player of the Month honors while wearing aqua and orange.

These five NFL free agents could really help these five NFL teams after two weeks.

We’re already two weeks into the 2023 NFL season, and we’ve got a pretty good lay of the land for what some teams need to work on to stay afloat this season.

While some teams can only fix these issues with improved play, other teams might be able to go look out and see what free agents are still available.

While none of the players on the list will be monumental additions at this stage in the season, they could all play valuable roles to help areas where these five NFL teams could stand to improve.

9 best free agent pass rushers after Jadeveon Clowney joined Ravens

The Jaguars showed brief interest in Jadeveon Clowney, but now he’s off the market. Could anyone else catch the team’s eye?

The pass rushing market was already thin Friday morning, but got it a little thinner when Jadeveon Clowney decided to join the Baltimore Ravens.

Clowney, 30, previously visited the Jacksonville Jaguars, but left without a contract. The team’s interest in a free agent pass rusher made sense given the Jaguars finished 26th in the NFL in sacks last season and didn’t make many changes at the position in the offseason.

Given the brief interest in Clowney, it’d make sense if the Jaguars peeked at the rest of the market.

Here are the best edge rushers still available with three weeks left until the regular season begins:
