Dolphins sign 8 players to reserve/future contracts after 2023 season

Here’s who’s sticking around from the practice squad.

With the Miami Dolphins 2023 officially coming to a close on Saturday, the restrictions that force teams to keep their active rosters at 53 players are lifted, allowing teams to sign up to 90 players.

Once a team is eliminated from the playoffs, they can sign a number of players to reserve/futures contracts which adds them to the active roster through the spring and summer.

On Monday, the Dolphins signed these eight players from their practice squad to such deals:

Dolphins elevate LB, CB from practice squad for matchup with the Chiefs

Miami brings up two to the active roster for Saturday.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with one player ruled out and four questionable for their wild-card matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squad elevations to bring up veteran linebacker Malik Reed and cornerback Ethan Bonner to the active roster for the game.

Bonner, 24, has been elevated three times this season, but he’s only played in two of Miami’s games. He’s totaled 26 special teams snaps and 11 on defense. He’s recorded one tackle and one pass defensed.

Reed, 27, was just signed to the practice squad this week. He played in four games with the Las Vegas Raiders this season, recording three tackles. He spent training camp and the preseason with Miami and spent his first three NFL seasons playing for now Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in Denver.

Dolphins elevate LB, CB from practice squad for matchup with the Bills

It’s his third elevation of the year.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with two players ruled out and two questionable for their Week 18 matchup with the Buffalo Bills.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squads elevations to bring up veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram and cornerback Ethan Bonner to the active roster for the game.

Ingram, 34, has been elevated in each of the Dolphins’ previous two matchups, playing 30% of the team’s defensive snaps in those contests. he’s recorded just two total tackles this year. However, with Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips now both out for the year, he may be asked to fill a more prominent role going forward.

Bonner, 24, has played two games an undrafted rookie this season, playing 26 special teams snaps and 11 on defense. He’s recorded one tackle and pass defensed in those two games. With Xavien Howard out with an injury, Bonner may be asked to fill in a bit on defense again this week.

Dolphins elevate veteran LB and rookie CB for matchup with Cowboys

Miami calls up rookie DB and veteran LB to the active roster for Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with one starter out and seven other members of their roster questionable for their Week 16 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use both of their practice squad elevations, bringing up rookie cornerback Ethan Bonner and veteran linebacker Melvin Ingram to the active roster.

Bonner, 24, made his professional debut last week against the New York Jets. He made an impressive pass break-up on the sideline in the contest that got his teammates and coaches excited. This is his second elevation, so he’ll have just one more this year.

Ingram, 34, spent last season with the Dolphins but remained unsigned this year until Miami brought him back to their practice squad earlier in the month. It’s unclear how much the former first-round pick will play, but he’ll probably be eased into a rotation in Vic Fangio’s defense for now.

WATCH: Dolphins sideline gets fired up for rookie UDFA’s first PBU

Miami’s rookie CB made a play on Sunday that got his teammates fired up.

The Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets on Sunday 30-0 at Hard Rock Stadium, and the large gap allowed for some inexperienced players to get opportunities that they normally wouldn’t.

One player who benefitted from the 30-point lead was cornerback Ethan Bonner, an undrafted rookie who was elevated for the contest and was making his NFL debut.

The former Stanford Cardinal played 11 defensive snaps and 13 on special teams, earning the fourth-highest PFF grade (81.7) for any defensive player with at least 10 snaps.

Bonner’s highlight of the day came on New York’s second possession in the fourth quarter. On second-and-9 with just under four minutes remaining, Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian tried to complete a pass to Allan Lazard on the right sideline. However, Bonner was there to break it up.

The support from his teammates on the sidelines was truly an awesome moment.

All of the coaches were jumping around to him, and Channing Tindall, Christian Wilkins, Duke Riley and Bradley Chubb ran over to the cornerback to congratulate him on the great play.

Miami has some depth at cornerback, but they’ve been dealing with injuries to Xavien Howard, who missed Sunday’s contest, and Cam Smith, who left in the middle of it. If either of them are questionable for Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, Bonner could get the second elevation of his career.

Dolphins elevate rookie DB for Week 15 vs. Jets

Miami calls up rookie DB to the active roster for Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins entered the weekend with two starters ruled out and nine more members of their roster questionable.

So, on Saturday, Miami opted to use one of their practice squad elevations, bringing up rookie defensive back Ethan Bonner to the active roster, according to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe.

Bonner, 24, joined the Dolphins this year as an undrafted free agent after a collegiate career at Stanford where he played in 21 games.

Earlier in the year, Bonner got a nice shoutout from Tyreek Hill, who said he’s the second-fastest player on the team.
