Broncos cut DL McTelvin Agim

The Broncos will cut DL McTelvin Agim, according to NFL Network.

The Denver Broncos have waived defensive lineman McTelvin Agim, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Agim (6-3, 300 pounds) would presumably be a candidate to return on the practice squad if he clears waivers. After an impressive performance in Denver’s preseason finale, though, Agim will likely draw interest on the waiver wire.

It sounds like the Broncos tried to trade Agim before cutting him as Pelissero reported Agim was “the subject of trade talks in recent days.”

Agim was picked by Denver in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He struggled to break into the defensive line’s starting lineup, appearing in 17 games (no starts) over the last two seasons. Agim totaled 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two pass breakups in those appearances.

Agim did stand out in the team’s final preseason game over the weekend with two forced fumbles, two pass breakups and a sack, but that apparently wasn’t enough to make the squad.

Agim not making the 53-man roster presumably increases the chances of sixth-round pick Matt Henningsen making the team as a rookie.

Broncos stock up/down: Risers and fallers after final preseason game

After the Broncos’ 23-13 win over the Vikings, there are many decisions to be made. Who stood out from this contest?

After a 10-point victory in their final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, the Denver Broncos now have significant decisions to make by whittling the roster from 80 players down to 53. Here are six aspects of the game that the Denver decision-makers will look at to aid their conclusions.

Broncos close out preseason with 23-13 win over Vikings

Mike Boone and McTelvin Agim stood out in the Broncos’ preseason finale on Saturday night.

The Denver Broncos wrapped up preseason on Saturday evening with a 23-13 win over Minnesota Vikings at home.

Denver’s standouts on offense were running back Mike Boone and rookie wide receiver Montrell Washington. Boone rushed five times for 44 yards and caught two passes for seven yards. Washington scored a touchdown on an 11-yard run from a pitch in the second quarter.

On defense, defensive lineman McTelvin Agim turned in an impressive performance with two strip-sacks, including one that outside linebacker Baron Browning returned 17 yards for a touchdown just before halftime. Rookie safety Delarrin Turner-Yell also stood with four tackles and a sack that stopped the Vikings on fourth-and-goal late in the game, preserving the win.

Broncos kicker Brandon McManus added 50-, 40- and 31-yard field goals to give Denver 23 total points.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, they did not escape the game without injury. Promising rookie receiver Brandon Johnson went down with an ankle injury in the first quarter and he did not return to the game. It remains to be seen how much that injury might impact Johnson’s chances to make the team.

On a positive note on the injury front, receiver KJ Hamler returned to action for the first time since tearing his ACL last September. Hamler caught three passes for 18 yards and he looked healthy and confident.

Up next for Denver is Tuesday’s deadline to finalize a 53-man roster.

Broncos DL McTelvin Agim forces fumble, OLB Baron Browning scoops and scores

This won’t be the last time Baron Browning makes a big play in 2022.

As the adage goes: offenses sell tickets, but defenses win games.

The Denver Broncos will sell tickets as Russell Wilson’s arrival will be a draw. But the defense will have to measure up if the Broncos want to contend. So far, as far as preseason games go, they are showing flashes of promise.

Denver’s currently playing the Minnesota Vikings in their third and final preseason game. As the score was 10-7 with the Broncos in the lead approaching halftime, defensive lineman McTelvin Agim recorded a strip-sack, allowing outside linebacker Baron Browning to scoop the ball from the ground for a defensive score.

Agim and Browning, third and second-year players, respectively, will look to capitalize on this big play into a stellar season. With new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero blending the old Fangio system with his twist, Agim and Browning will aim to contribute to a potential playoff-bound defense in 2022.

McTelvin Agim, a Texas native, talks about Juneteenth holiday

Juneteenth became a federal holiday last year.

An 11th federal holiday was added on June 19, 2021.

Juneteenth was first recognized last year after president Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. June 19, 1865 marks the day when African American slaves in Galveston, Texas, were among the last to be told they had been freed.

For reference, 1865 was over two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation outlawed slavery and two months after the Civil War ended.

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger delivered General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas. In other words, he informed residents of President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and that the army now intended to enforce the law in the state.

Third-year defensive lineman McTelvin Agim is a Texas native.

“When it was explained to me, it was that, us, as slaves, we were sold so many times we lost contact with a lot of our family,” Agim said in an interview with DenverBroncos.com. “So when we were finally able to have our freedom, they reached out to those families and got together and then celebrated being able to be around each other. So when I found out the meaning of that, it just put Juneteenth and our family reunions in a whole different light for me.”

Agim added that Juneteenth celebrations typically include “old-school music” playing at barbecues. Celebrations usually take place at grandmother’s house or the park. While kids are running around, older family members play spades or dominoes.

Broncos agree to 4-year deal with rookie DL McTelvin Agim

The Broncos have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with rookie defensive lineman McTelvin Agim.

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms on a four-year contract with rookie defensive lineman McTelvin Agim, the team announced Wednesday.

Agim’s contract is expected to have a signing bonus of $857,265 with a total value of $4,152,268, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. His signing bonus will be prorated over the four years of his contract for salary cap purposes.

Agim (6-3, 309 pounds) totaled 140 tackles — including 31 tackles for losses — and 14.5 sacks during his four years at Arkansas. He also broke up four passes, recovered two fumbles and forced six fumbles during his time with the Razorbacks.

Agim, one of the team’s third-round picks, will compete with DeMarcus Walker, Dre’Mont Jones, Jonathan Harris and Christian Covington for a spot on the 53-man roster as rotational defensive lineman.

Denver’s draft class will have combined salary cap hits of $9,980,665 but the net cap hit will be closer to $3,219,217. After signing their draft class, the Broncos will have about $13,837,021 in remaining salary cap space.

Broncos rookie McTelvin Agim will wear Derek Wolfe’s old jersey number

Broncos rookie defensive lineman McTelvin Agim will wear Derek Wolfe’s old number.

Denver Broncos third-round draft pick McTelvin Agim will wear jersey No. 95, the defensive lineman announced on his Twitter page this week. Agim chose the number because he was selected with the 95th overall pick in this year’s draft.

Agim recorded 140 tackles — including 31 tackles for losses — and 14.5 sacks in four seasons at Arkansas. He also knocked down four passes, recovered two fumbles and forced six fumbles during his time with the Razorbacks.

Derek Wolfe, who played for the Broncos from 2012-2019, previously wore jersey No. 95. Wolfe wore the number longer than any other player in franchise history, totaling 299 tackles and 33 sacks in eight seasons. He also broke up 15 passes and intercepted a pass during his time in Denver.

Wolfe, who helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 in 2015, signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens during NFL free agency.

Expect Broncos to use Jurrell Casey and McTelvin Agim in similar roles

Broncos defensive linemen Jurrell Casey and McTelvin Agim will be asked to generate interior pressure this season.

The Denver Broncos traded for defensive end Jurrell Casey in March and selected defensive lineman McTelvin Agim in the third round of April’s draft. Agim (22) will likely serve as a rotational player as a rookie and he might eventually serve as a replacement for Casey (30) in the future.

Casey and Agim can both stop the run but the Broncos seemingly brought both of them in for one main purpose — generate an interior pass rush.

“This is a great veteran in our league,” defensive coordinator Ed Donatell said of Casey on June 11. “He’s been a great interior player, but he adds to the pass rush. That’s really important to us. To give us that push up inside with the edge rushers we have, that’s very valuable.”

During his nine years with the Tennessee Titans, Casey totaled 51 sacks and was voted to five Pro Bowls. Agim recorded 31 tackles for losses and 14.5 sacks during his four seasons at Arkansas.

“In today’s football, most of our picks you’ll see pass rush in them when you’re talking about an interior or an exterior defensive lineman,” Donatell said. “[Agim] brings that pass rush ability to him. There’s a raw sense to him that I think we can bring out, but he does bring the rush.”

Adding players like Casey and Agim to a front seven that already includes star pass rushers Von Miller and Bradley Chubb on the edges will make Denver’s pass rush even scarier for opposing quarterbacks this season.

Denver Broncos depth chart prediction: Defensive line

Which defensive linemen will make the Broncos’ 53-man roster this year?

As we continue our 2020 depth chart prediction series for the Denver Broncos, today we’re going to be looking at the defensive line.

Previously, we predicted the QBRB, TEWR and OL depth charts.

DE NT DE
Shelby Harris Mike Purcell Jurrell Casey
Dre’Mont Jones McTelvin Agim DeMarcus Walker
Joel Heath Kyle Peko Christian Covington
Jonathan Harris

It’s pretty easy to predict the Broncos’ starting lineup. Harris and Purcell will likely keep their starting spots and Casey will presumably fill the role previously held by Derek Wolfe. It’s the backup spots that are undetermined.

Jones and Walker figure to serve as important rotational pieces and Agim is essentially a lock to make the team after being selected in the third round of April’s draft.

Last year, Denver carried six defensive linemen on the initial 53-man roster. If that’s the case again in 2020, Covington and Heath might only make the team if one of the team’s top six defensive linemen suffers an injury this summer. Peko and Harris figure to be longshots as well.

Broncos DL McTelvin Agim eager to learn under Jurrell Casey

“I’m able to sit there and learn under them,” McTelvin Agim said of the Broncos’ veteran defenders. “It’s going to be a blessing.”

Broncos third-round draft pick McTelvin Agim (6-3, 309 pounds) is an interior defensive lineman who generates pressure on passing downs and will likely spend time at defensive end in Denver’s 3-4 defense.

Sound familiar?

He’s a similar player to Jurrell Casey (6-1, 305 pounds), who the Broncos acquired in a trade with the Titans in March. This offseason, Agim will learn under Casey and Denver’s other defensive linemen.

“Being able to learn from Jurrell Casey [is exciting],” Agim said during a conference call with reporters on April 24. “You have other guys just — all of those guys — all-pro legends, future Hall of Famers. I’m able to sit there and learn under them. It’s going to be a blessing.

“Just being able to learn under all of those, all-pro, future Hall of Famers, I’m just going to try to soak it in and be appreciative of the opportunity.”

Casey is a five-time Pro Bowler but the Broncos don’t have many other All-Star caliber defensive linemen. Agim might have been referring to edge defenders Von Miller and Bradley Chubb, who play as outside linebackers.

Regardless of how Denver’s front seven lines up, Agim’s overall point that he will be learning from some star defenders holds true. The Broncos would be thrilled if he has a similar career to Casey’s during his time in Denver. Casey has totaled 51 sacks in nine seasons.
