Former Denver Broncos defensive lineman Derek Wolfe went viral last week after posting a photo of himself with a massive mountain lion that he killed outside a “rural neighborhood” in Colorado.

Wolfe said the large cat had killed two dogs and had been living under a porch. He tracked it with a guide last week and shot it with a bow and arrow.

The hunt left some fans asking, Is that legal?

In Wolfe’s case, yes.

The Super Bowl 50 champion, an avid outdoorsman, has a license and completed a course to become certified to hunt mountain lions, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed to 9News last week.

With his license, Wolfe was eligible to harvest one mountain lion during the fall hunting season, which runs from Nov. 28-March 31.

Wolfe, 32, played for the Broncos from 2012-2019, totaling 299 tackles, 81 quarterback hits, 33 sacks, 15 pass breakups and one interception in 108 games. He played one final season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020 before retiring in 2022. Wolfe now works for 104.3 The Fan in Denver.

Ex-Broncos DE Derek Wolfe: ‘We got catfished by all of the hype’

“I feel like we got catfished by all of the hype,” Derek Wolfe tweeted after Russell Wilson threw two interceptions on Thursday.

When the Denver Broncos traded for quarterback Russell Wilson this offseason and gave him a big contract extension, there was plenty of optimism that Wilson would help turn the offense around and make the Broncos contenders again.

That optimism led to hype, and the hype got out of control, with some pundits even starting Super Bowl chatter, and Nathaniel Hackett was even named a potential candidate to win Coach of the Year.

After five games, former defensive lineman Derek Wolfe feels like he was catfished by the offseason hype.

After Wilson threw a terrible interception against the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday, Wolfe scoffed that’s what the team bought for $240 million.

Wolfe mimicked fans booing the offense, too.

They were harsh tweets from Wolfe, but relatable for many fans in Denver. Wilson was expected to be the team’s new Peyton Manning. Instead, he’s ranked among the worst QBs in the league through the first five weeks.

There’s still time for the Broncos to turn things around, but as Wolfe noted, things aren’t looking good.

Derek Wolfe expects Dre’Mont Jones to ‘step his game up’ in Year 4

“I think he’s going to step his game up,” Derek Wolfe said of #Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones.

Recently retired NFL defender Derek Wolfe has high hopes for Dre’Mont Jones.

Wolfe played for the Denver Broncos for eight years from 2012-2019, before finishing his career with the Baltimore Ravens. But in his time with the Broncos, he played his final year with the team alongside Jones. So he knows what Jones can do, and he expects the fourth-year player from Ohio State to step it up in a big way in 2022.

“I liked him his rookie year,” Wolfe said when he returned to the team’s facility last month to retire as a Bronco. “I thought he had the ability. This is the first time I’ve seen him face-to-face in probably two years, and I was like, ‘Oh, you put some weight on. You look good.’ When I say weight, I mean muscle. He looks good. He could already move, and he had the ability. I think he’s going to step his game up, especially in Year 4.”

Wolfe also elaborated why he expected a jump. By year four, according to Wolfe, NFL players begin to come into their own.

“This is when you start seeing guys come into their own. I think he’s going to have it. I think he has what it takes. He’s one of those guys you can look up to, for sure. He knows how to win. He won championships, and he’s been a part of championships before. He knows what he’s doing.”

We will get a chance to watch Jones attempt to live up to Wolfe’s expectation beginning next week when Denver’s starters are expected to make their preseason debuts against the Buffalo Bills.

Former Ravens DL Derek Wolfe retires from NFL as member of Broncos

Former Ravens defensive lineman Derek Wolfe retired from the NFL as a member of the Broncos

The Baltimore Ravens revamped their defensive line room during the 2020 offseason, bringing in Calais Campbell in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars as well as originally signing former Los Angeles Rams defensive lineman Michael Brockers. However, once the deal with Brockers fell through Baltimore pivoted to a former Denver Broncos player in Derek Wolfe.

Wolfe signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Ravens in 2020, but played so well during that season that the team rewarded him with a three-year, $12 million extension. However, multiple injuries forced Wolfe out of action for the entire 2021 season, and despite making his intentions clear that he was looking to return for the 2022 season, a pair of other surgeries resulted in an injury settlement between him and Baltimore, ending his Ravens tenure on a disappointing note.

On Friday, Wolfe announced that he was retiring from the NFL, doing it as a member of the Broncos by signing a one-day contract with the team.

In nine NFL seasons on the field, Wolfe totaled 350 total tackles and 34 sacks. He also won Super Bowl 50 with Denver during the 2015 season.

Ravens reach injury settlement with DL Derek Wolfe

The Ravens and defensive lineman Derek Wolfe reached an injury settlement

The Baltimore Ravens saw defensive lineman Derek Wolfe be one of the best run-stuffers in the NFL during the 2020 season. Hopes were high for the veteran once he re-signed with the team during the 2021 offseason, but he ended up missing the whole season with multiple injuries.

There was a bit of uncertainty surrounding Wolfe’s situation for 2022, as the defensive lineman posted that he had hip surgery just a few months ago. Wolfe then updated his status by revealing that he had a second hip surgery. On Tuesday, head coach John Harbaugh spoke with the media and provided an update on Wolfe’s status, saying that the team had reached an injury settlement with the veteran.

The re-signing of Wolfe before the 2021 season seemed like a great deal at the time, but unfortunately it didn’t work out in the end. In his only season with the Ravens, Wolfe played in 14 games and started eight of them, totaling 51 total tackles and one sack. There was also a lot that he brought away from the box score, including his run-stuffing prowess as well as his ability to free up his teammates for sacks.

Ravens DL Derek Wolfe has second hip surgery of 2022

Ravens defensive lineman Derek Wolfe shared that he had his second hip surgery of 2022

The Baltimore Ravens got great contributions out of defensive lineman Derek Wolfe during the 2020 season, as he was one of the best run defenders in the league that year. However he missed all of 2021 with a number of injuries, and the team clearly missed him in their front seven.

Wolfe underwent hip surgery a few months ago, but on Monday shared on his Instagram story that he underwent another hip surgery this year. It’s unfortunate for Wolfe, who has dealt with injuries over the majority of his long NFL career.

Wolfe wouldn’t save any money if released by Baltimore, as his salary is fully guaranteed. His departure would create salary cap space if traded, but it’s unclear if any team would want to take on his contract with this most recent development. Hopefully Wolfe can recover back to full health, as that’s the most important thing.

Ravens DL Wolfe has second hip surgery, future in doubt

A second hip surgery puts Wolfe’s future up in the air. He signed a three-year deal with Baltimore last year but missed all of last season as well:

The fight for the AFC North could be a four-team race during the 2022 NFL season. The Cleveland Browns hope their additions on offense will be an upgrade and that their defense continues the development shown late in the season.

The Cincinnati Bengals are fresh off their Super Bowl appearance hoping an upgraded offensive line can help take Joe Burrow to the next level.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are turning the page on the Ben Roethlisberger era with either/both Mitchell Trubisky and/or Kenny Pickett as their starting quarterback. While the Steelers may be expected to lose, the team stayed competitive with Duck Hodges at quarterback a few years ago.

Finally, the Baltimore Ravens hope to bounce back from a last-place finish in 2021 with a healthy Lamar Jackson. The story of the Ravens season was injuries as Jackson, most of their running backs and most of their secondary missed significant time.

Baltimore may have another significant injury to deal with as versatile defensive lineman Derek Wolfe announced he had his second hip surgery of the year on Monday:

As noted, Wolfe’s contract is guaranteed for this season with a cap hit of $3.8 million. His statement regarding “a normal life” seems to indicate his future on the football field could be in doubt.

The Ravens retained veteran Calais Campbell and brought over Michael Pierce from Minnesota this offseason to bolster the defensive line.

Wolfe last played in 2020, his lone healthy season with Baltimore. He signed a three-year, $12 million deal last offseason with $6.5 million guaranteed.

Ravens DL named as potential post-June 1 roster move candidate by Pro Football Focus

A Ravens defensive lineman was named as a potential post-June 1 roster move candidate by Pro Football Focus

The Baltimore Ravens have revamped their defensive line during the 2022 offseason. They’ve brought in free agent talent such as Michael Pierce and Brent Urban, brought back some of their contributors from 2021 such as Calais Campbell, and drafted promising prospects in the 2022 NFL draft such as Travis Jones.

Despite all of the players they’ve added, one player who remains a mystery on the team’s defensive line is Derek Wolfe. The veteran signed a one-year deal with Baltimore during the 2020 offseason and went on to have a great year for the team, but after re-signing with the Ravens for three years after the season he missed all of 2021 with an injury.

When naming potential post-June 1 cut and trade candidates, Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus had Wolfe on his list, discussing the plethora of other talent that Baltimore has at the defensive line position.

“Now entering his age-32 season, Wolfe is still a highly productive player on the field, but a back injury sidelined him for the entire 2022 campaign. The Ravens’ moves this offseason suggest they’re at least preparing for the idea of a roster without Wolfe, bringing back two former interior defenders. The Ravens first signed nose tackle Michael Pierce after his release from the Minnesota Vikings, and they more recently agreed to terms with Brent Urban. Add in Baltimore’s selection of Connecticut nose tackle Travis Jones in the third round of this year’s draft, and the depth chart is quite full of run-stuffers.”

Ravens DL Travis Jones confident in ability to get better

Ravens rookie defensive lineman Travis Jones talks about how being in the NFL will help his game improve even more

The Baltimore Ravens drafted University of Connecticut defensive lineman Travis Jones with the 76th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Jones was expected to fall nowhere near the third round, and Baltimore took advantage by securing an extremely talented player at a great value on the draft board.

During rookie mini camp, Jones was asked about how he felt he improved during his pre-draft process and how excited he is to get the NFL coaching from the Ravens. Jones talked about what he got better at during the Senior Bowl in particular, and said that he’s only going to get better.

“Throughout the Senior Bowl, I feel like I became more consistent with my hands as a pass rusher. I feel like now that I’m in the league, getting a little better coaching and going against better competition, I’m only going to get better from here. So, it’s going to be good to see.”

Jones will receive quality NFL coaching in Baltimore, but will also be able to learn from veterans on the team’s defensive line such as Calais Campbell, Michael Pierce and others. A hopefully improved Ravens secondary should make quarterbacks struggle to find open receivers, which would give Jones and company ample opportunities to get a lot of pressure on opposing signal callers.
