Michigan football makes top six for top 100 2025 defensive tackle

Would be a perfect player in Wink Martindale’s system. #GoBlue

Now that the Michigan football coaching staff is apparently set, it’s making in-roads with some of the top recruits in the country.

Sherrone Moore hasn’t even been the head coach for a month, but his program is starting to make top groups for some elite recruits who are putting out their favorite schools. Among them is an elite 2025 defensive tackle from Pennsylvania.

Hailing from Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s Prep, Maxwell Roy is a four-star defensive tackle rated as the No. 98 player in the country per 247Sports in the 2025 recruiting class. Earlier this week, he listed his top six and Michigan football made the cut along with some other elite schools.

Roy lists Duke, Ohio State, Oregon, Rutgers, and Wisconsin as his other contenders. The interesting thing here is that the Wolverines just hired away the Badgers’ defensive line coach in Greg Scruggs to oversee the same position in Ann Arbor.

His scouting profile according to 247Sports’ Brian Dohn:

Sturdy, powerful interior defensive lineman who is tough against the run and can be disruptive in the backfield. Is athletic and plays low to win leverage battles. Has verified size from a trio of in-person evaluations and has plus length with a 79-inch wing. Demonstrates scheme versatility in St. Joseph’s Prep’s base 3-4 while also excelling in a 4-3. Uncoils when firing off the ball and can shoot gaps. Displays power in lower body in exploding up and into offensive lineman at the snap. Has strength throughout his frame. Can anchor and take on blocks in the running game to allow linebackers to make tackles. Demonstrates stack and shed ability. Flexible throughout his frame, which translates from his wrestling ability in which he went 37-9 as a sophomore and finished third in the district. Moves his feet well and continually plays with his shoulders above his knees. Can re-direct along the line of scrimmage and has a willingness to chase down plays. Uses his quickness to get into the backfield. Moves well laterally. Shows very good body control. Turns torso and dips shoulder to get underneath and inside on offensive linemen. Uses hands and flashes quickness but has to continue to work on technique to accentuate his power and speed. Continuing to build strength throughout his frame while retaining quickness and flexibility is important. High-level prospect who could play early at a Top 10 program. Possesses NFL draft potential.

At the moment, Roy is listed at 6-foot-3, 270 pounds. There are no predictions as to where he’ll end up.

Wisconsin in top six programs for four-star DT from Pennsylvania

Wisconsin in top six programs for four-star DT from Pennsylvania

The Wisconsin Badgers football program was included in the top six potential destinations by four-star defensive tackle Maxwell Roy on Wednesday.

Roy is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he’s a junior at St. Joseph’s Prep and he’s a member of the class of 2025 recruiting cycle. Amongst his final six teams, five of them are members of the Big Ten.

Wisconsin has had success with St. Joseph’s as recently as this past year, reeling in three-star cornerback Omillio Agard as a part of their class of 2024 commitments.

Roy will likely wait a few months, at minimum, before making any sort of decision where he’ll play his college football, but the Badgers are certainly in the running.

Top six: Maxwell Roy has Rutgers making the cut

Maxwell Roy has Rutgers in his top six.

Maxwell Roy has Rutgers football making the cut in a top six that is dominated by Big Ten programs.

A four-star defensive lineman from St. Joseph’s (Philadelphia), Roy has Rutgers in the top six alongside Duke, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Wisconsin.

At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Roy has the size to be a dominant interior defensive lineman in the Big Ten. He combines strength with good quickness and athleticism to become a force in the interior.

His ability to control the inside of the line while taking on multiple blockers was a big reason why St. Joseph’s finished last season 13-1. They closed out the season with 13 straight wins after a season-opening loss to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida).

Roy posted his top six on Wednesday morning via his social media:

A four-star according to Rivals, Roy is the No. 195 player in the nation in the 2025 recruiting class. He is the fourth-ranked player in Pennsylvania and the tenth-ranked defensive tackle nationally.
