Badgers guard ruled out Monday versus Northwestern

The Badgers will be without a starting guard Monday versus Northwestern as Max Klesmit will be forced to sit out with an upper body injury.

The Badgers are set to return to action Monday on the road versus Northwestern at 5:30 PM, but the team will be without junior guard Max Klesmit in the contest. Klesmit has been ruled out with an upper body injury, which is likely a result of the blow to the head that he suffered in Wisconsin’s 63-60 win over Penn State on Tuesday.

Klesmit was limited to just 10 minutes of action versus the Nittany Lions and will now be forced to miss at least one game as a result of his injury. In his place, junior Jordan Davis will likely return to the starting lineup after heading to the bench for the first time Tuesday.

Wisconsin comes into Monday’s matchup with Northwestern at a 12-5 record and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats are also 12-5 but carry a 3-3 conference record so far.

Badgers get back into the win column in Wahl’s return, defeat Penn State 63-60

The Badgers were able to end their three-game skid Tuesday, defeating the Nittany Lions 63-60 in Tyler Wahl’s (ankle) return to the lineup.

The Badgers ended their three-game losing streak Tuesday, beating Penn State 63-60 at the Kohl Center. Although he wasn’t particularly sharp from the field, Tyler Wahl scored 10 points (3-10 FG, 1-1 3Pt, 3-6 FT) in his return to the lineup after missing those three losses with a right ankle injury.

Wisconsin was able to capitalize off of the 10 turnovers they forced in Tuesday’s contest, turning those mistakes by Penn State into 15 points on the offensive end. On the opposite side, the Nittany Lions were unable to turn the Badgers’ six turnovers into any points of their own.

Steven Crowl was the leading scorer in the game, producing 21 points (9-16 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 2-4 FT) while reeling in 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Chucky Hepburn and Connor Essegian each scored in double-digits, compiling 13 points (3-7 FG, 2-2 3Pt, 5-6 FT) and 10 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 FT) respectively.

Essegian was making his first career start and the freshman reached at least 10 points for the third consecutive game and the fourth time over his last five contests total.

Max Klesmit suffered a cut to the face in the first half and was limited to just 10 minutes in the contest. More information on his status moving forward will likely come ahead of the Badgers’ next game Saturday.

For Penn State, senior guards Jalen Pickett and Andrew Funk led the way, scoring 19 and 16 points respectively. Pickett filled the stat sheet with 12 rebounds and six assists while Funk in particular produced from deep, making three out of eight three-point attempts in the contest. He’s now gone 10-for-20 on three-pointers over the last two games.

Penn State had an opportunity to send the game to overtime late in the game with Funk missing a long-range shot in the final seconds, losing the contest 63-60 as a result.

The Badgers improved to 12-5 with the win and are now 4-3 in Big Ten contests this season. Up next for Wisconsin is a matchup with Northwestern (12-5) on the road Saturday at 11 AM.

For Penn State, the loss drops them to 12-6 on the year and 3-4 in the conference. The Nittany Lions will head back home to take on Nebraska (9-9) at 2:15 PM on Saturday.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin drops second-straight in 69-65 loss to Michigan State

Wisconsin basketball drops its second-straight game in a 69-65 loss to Michigan State:

On Tuesday night, the Wisconsin Badgers were not able to close out their matchup against the Michigan State Spartans and fell 69-65 at the Kohl Center. This was also the Badgers’ second-straight game without star forward Tyler Wahl due to an ankle injury.

Wisconsin built a small lead in the second half, thanks to a 15-point second half from forward Steven Crowl, but the Badgers’ shooting went cold at the end of the game. Crowl finished the game with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Hopefully, Wahl can make his return on Saturday, as the Badgers will face off against talented forward Trayce Jackson-Davis and the Indiana Hoosiers on the road.

Even though they got into foul trouble in the second half, the Wisconsin Badgers were able to pull out a 64-59 win against the No. 13-ranked Maryland Terrapins in their Big Ten opener.

Wisconsin point guard Chucky Hepburn led the team in scoring with 13 points, while forward Tyler Wahl had another great defensive performance with nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal before fouling out at the end of the game. The Badgers’ defense was able to force 14 turnovers and limited the Terrapins to 38.2% shooting from the field.

Although it was not the prettiest victory, the Badgers have continued to win by forcing their opponents into low-scoring defensive battles. Wisconsin will move on to face the No. 24-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes on the road on Sunday.

The Wisconsin Badgers beat the Dayton Flyers 43-42 as underdogs in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Badgers shut down the Flyers’ offense and made the game a defensive battle. They will move on to face the No. 5-ranked Kansas Jayhawks at 10 a.m. CT on Thanksgiving Day.

The Badgers limited the Flyers to 14 points in the first half and only a 30.2 field goal percentage on the day. Wisconsin center Steven Crowl had a good defensive performance with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. Their leading scorer was true freshman Connor Essegian who racked up 13 points while going 2-4 from deep.

The Jayhawks will be a tough test for the Badgers on Thursday, and a victory would propel them to the final of the Battle 4 Atlantis and likely into the next USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Even though they finished with an 11-point victory, the Wisconsin Badgers struggled on both sides of the ball in their matchup at home against the Green Bay Phoenix.

Guard Jordan Davis led Wisconsin with 11 points, three rebounds and two steals. Davis was the only Badger to score in double-digits, while the team as a whole averaged an abysmal 30.2 field goal percentage. In fact, two of Wisconsin’s biggest playmakers, Tyler Wahl and Chucky Hepburn, combined to go 4-25 from the field and finished with only 16 points.

On defense, the Badgers allowed several huge scoring runs from the Phoenix, including one that allowed Green Bay to pull within five points in the second half.

Wisconsin will head to The Bahamas for their next game on Nov. 23, to face the No. 23-ranked Dayton Flyers in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Wisconsin basketball lands Wofford transfer G Max Klesmit

Wisconsin basketball lands Wofford transfer G Max Klesmit. #Badgers

After narrowing his list of transfer destinations down to South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Clemson, and Colorado State, a sought after in-state transfer had a change of heart.

Yesterday afternoon, Wofford transfer guard Max Klesmit announced his decision on Twitter that he would be coming home and joining the Badgers next season.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound shooting guard started 31 games for the Terriers last season and averaged 14.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game as a sophomore en route to being named a third-team all-Southern Conference performer.

A native of Neenah, Wisconsin, Klesmit gives the Badgers an experienced guard that can stretch the floor (68 made three’s last season), but also has the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim.

The former three-time all-state combo guard has two years of eligibility remaining, three should he exercise his extra covid year.

Klesmit is now the second Wisconsin native to transfer to UW this offseason, joining UW-Green Bay point guard Kamari McGee.
