2020 3M Open odds, predictions, picks, PGA Tour best bets

Sportsbookwire takes a look at the BetMGM PGA Tour betting odds and makes picks to win the 2020 3M Tournament.

Matthew Wolff looks to defend his 2019 title at this week’s 3M Open – which begins Thursday – at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minn. He’ll face a much weaker field than what was in attendance for Jon Rahm’s victory at last week’s Memorial Tournament. Tommy Fleetwood is the top-ranked golfer in attendance at No. 17 in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings. Below, we look at the BetMGM betting odds and make our picks and best bets for the 2020 3M Open.

Lucas Glover (+3300)

Glover shares the seventh-best odds to win the 3M Open following a T-38 finish last week at Muirfield Village Golf Club in more difficult conditions and against a much stronger field. He tied for seventh in this event last year and has made the cut in each of his five events since the PGA Tour returned to play following the midseason pause.

He’s 26th on Tour this season in Strokes Gained: Approach and 36th in both SG: Off-the-Tee and Birdies or Better Percentage.

Erik Van Rooyen (+4500)

Van Rooyen finished T-22 last week. He tied for 21st at the RBC Heritage but missed the cut at the Charles Schwab Challenge and Rocket Mortgage Classic.

He averaged 2.08 Strokes Gained: Approach and 2.19 SG: Tee-to-Green last week, according to Data Golf. The 30-year-old South African is still looking for his first win on the PGA Tour but will play against a weaker field than what’s usually at the tournaments in which he plays.

Max Homa (+6600)

Homa has missed the cut in three straight events and four of his last five since play returned. He withdrew during the third round last year after making the cut at 5-under par. He’s 38th on Tour in SG: Off-the-Tee and 49th in SG: Approach this season.

Charles Howell III (+9000)

Howell tied for 48th at plus-8 last week with a final round of 77. He was T-23 in this event last year at 13-under while averaging 1.50 SG: Tee-to-Green per round. He’ll be looking for his first top-10 result in his 10th event this year, but he had five top 10s in 30 events last year. His last win came at the 2018 RSM Classic in a more similar field than what we’ve seen lately.

2020 3M Open Betting Picks – Long shots

Chase Seiffert (+10000)

Seiffert took last week off following his breakout fourth-place finish in the Workday Charity Open. He gained 0.92 strokes on approach and 1.44 from tee-to-green per round at Muirfield Village and his odds remain high following the week away.

Sahith Theegala (+25000)

Theegala has his highest odds since turning pro after missing the cut at the Travelers Championship and Rocket Mortgage Classic. The former top amateur will play in his weakest field and has his best chance for success.

Wolff won here in 2019 as a +12500 long shot in his third start as a pro.

Itching to return, Max Homa talks missing April Masters, Westworld’s ‘confusing’ plot

As we await the return of the PGA Tour, Max Homa says: “I think we’re all going to be probably a bit more jolly when we come back.”

Max Homa said he’d carry his own golf bag if he had to when the PGA Tour resumes play. He’d even carry two if need be.

“It would stink but I guess we’d have to all finally blame ourselves for being unprepared,” Homa said in a conference call on Tuesday. “I play golf without (my caddie) carrying my bag when I’m at home. I hope they don’t make us carry the staff bag because that would get a little difficult but at this point I’d carry two staff bags to play some golf in a tournament if things could just go back to normal.”

Homa has been itching to get back to work for some time now after the COVID-19 global pandemic stifled the world and shut down the PGA Tour in March.

While Homa, one of the best Twitter follows in golf because of his wit and humor, has done his best in these difficult times in his Scottsdale, Arizona, home with his wife Lacey, and their dog. He misses his day job and hopes the PGA Tour can restart June 11 in the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

This week is especially trying as Homa, the 2013 NCAA individual champion at California, was supposed to be defending his title in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

Last year, Homa, 29, earned his maiden Tour victory by three shots as he held off a stellar group including Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Jason Dufner and Paul Casey.

“The walk up 18 and how electric and fun it was,” Homa recalled as his fondest memory of 2019. “It really felt like a dream coming true in real time, which is rare. I did media day there two months ago and I saw how excited everyone was.

“It’s one of my favorite cities and one of my favorite golf courses. It was a life-changing Sunday.”

‘Super not great’

Homa also had to deal with a taxing week in April, when his first appearance in the Masters was postponed to November.

“Super not great,” Homa described his feelings Masters week. “It just stunk. Wednesday I think hurt the most, not getting to play the par-3 contest because my wife was very excited to caddie and I was excited to blame her for a bad club. It was going to be awesome.

“But it’s hard to get too caught up with your sad feelings about not getting to play the Masters when people would do quite a bit just to go back to work or to be healthy. Hard to be down for too long.”

Homa has spent much of his time since the PGA Tour shut down practicing in his back yard, playing hide-and-seek with his dog and racing his wife for the remote. He’s been able to practice and play at local golf clubs in the Grand Canyon State. And “I’ve watched all the TV you can possibly watch,” he said. Just don’t ask him to go through another episode of Westworld.

“There are so many good shows. Just don’t watch Westworld – just too fricking confusing,” he said. “That’s just messed up my quarantine.”

Homa had six top-25s in seven starts this year when play was halted, including top-10s in the Farmers Insurance Open, Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Genesis Invitational. He hopes to recapture his good form whenever play resumes but basically, all he wants to do is get out onto the PGA Tour.

“It’s funny man, I miss the guys, I miss the banter,” he said. “I miss just playing golf with amazing golfers all of the time. I miss the competition. That’s why I love golf so much.

“This has made me appreciate it more. I think we’re all going to be probably a bit more jolly when we come back because we’re all going to realize just how lucky we are even more so than we already do.”

Max Homa will now roast golfers for their bad outfits

Max Homa, already known for roasting golf swings, will now aim his quick wit and sick burns on those who dare sport the worst golf outfits.

Max Homa is well known on Twitter for roasting golf swings, particularly of amateurs who seek to be roasted.

Now, Homa is taking on a new challenge: roasting people who have the worst golf outfits.

What’s in it for you, besides gaining a little social-media notoriety? How about a chance to win one of five $100 TravisMathew gift cards? Those will be handed out Monday after the conclusion of the #stayHOMA challenge.

The fun started Tuesday and goes through Sunday. To join in, tag @max.homa and @travismathew and use the hashtag #stayHOMA in your post.

Homa, whose lone PGA Tour victory came almost a year ago at the Wells Fargo Championship, will have a lot of ridiculous outfits to roast.

Here’s a few that have come in so far:

PGA Tour’s Max Homa had a perfect reaction to his shank that almost hit a cameraman

This is the greatest video ever.

Max Homa is very good at golf. He might be even better at social media.

Homa picked up his first PGA Tour win last summer when he held off a very talented field at the Wells Fargo on Charlotte. This year he has had a number of top 10 finishes.

Recently Homa, who is great at not taking himself too seriously, has been winning Twitter with his ruthless/hilarious breakdowns of golf swings of fans who have asked for his thoughts.

On Sunday, he won Twitter again, this time by having some fun with a video that showed his complete shank that almost took out a NBC cameraman during the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

First, the shank:

That’s a shot all of us amateurs have in our bag.

Now, his reaction:

Now that is good stuff.

Homa, by the way, was able to save bogey on that hole.

50 days until 2020 Masters: Here’s a look at players making their Masters debut

Cameron Champ and Matthew Wolff are among the PGA Tour stars making their Masters debut in April at Augusta National Golf Club.

Seventeen-year-old Abel Gallegos of Argentina shot a final-round 67 at Mayakoba’s El Camaleon Golf Club in January to win the Latin America Amateur Championship. With the trophy, Gallegos received a coveted invitation to the 2020 Masters.

In his first time playing the Latin American Amateur Championship, Gallegos finished at 4 under and beat runner-up Aaron Terrazas of Mexico by four strokes.

The teen says watching countryman Angel Cabrera win a green jacket in 2009 is one of his earliest memories of watching the Masters on TV. Cabrera sent Gallegos a congratulatory text after his win in the LAAC.

Here’s a look at the players who will make their Masters debut at Augusta National Golf Club during Round 1 on April 9, 2020.

Max Homa, ignored on Genesis broadcast, has something to say about it

Max Homa’s fans weren’t pleased they couldn’t find him on the CBS broadcast, and of course he had something clever to say about that.

[jwplayer N30ub1Zd-9JtFt04J]

With his popular swing commentary and witty Twitter banter, Max Homa always has something to say. Saturday his fans bemoaned the fact that they couldn’t actually see any of his stellar round, a 65 during which Homa climbed 26 spots on the Genesis Invitational leaderboard. After 54 holes, Homa is tied for eighth, three shots back.

And to those who wished they could have seen at least some highlights of Homa’s round on Saturday’s CBS broadcast, of course he had a response:

Last week Homa paired with Aaron Rodgers at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, getting into contention over the weekend but finishing T-9 at 24 under. Rodgers also weighed in on Homa being ignored on the telecast:

Only two men had better scores than Homa at Riviera on Saturday as Talor Gooch and Hideki Matsuyama shot 64.

Homa grew up in nearby Valencia and was a star player for the Cal Bears, becoming the school’s first NCAA individual champion in 2013. That summer he was named to the Walker Cup team that won the matches at the National Golf Links of America.

Saturday he felt comfortable on the greens, the same as those he grew up playing on, and felt supported by family and friends in the gallery, saying it felt like a “home game.”

GENESIS: Best photos | Leaderboard | Updates

“This place has always held a very special place in my heart,” Homa said of Riviera after his round. “I think this is kind of where I also started to fall in love with golf, not getting to play it, because I watched the tournament. So to come out here to shoot 6 under on this golf course, I know how hard it is and it means a lot to me.”

Last year Homa earned his first PGA Tour victory at the Wells Fargo Championship.

It’s worth noting he teed off in the first group Saturday morning, four hours before CBS went live. Sunday he’s off with Dustin Johnson and Gooch at 1:24 p.m. for the final round.

Justin Thomas, Tony Finau, Max Homa honor Kobe Bryant at Phoenix Open

Several golfers took the opportunity to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant at the Waste Management Phoenix Open’s first round.

[jwplayer QZWWH4Vm-9JtFt04J]

Several golfers took the opportunity to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant during the Waste Management Phoenix Open’s first round.

Justin Thomas wore his Lower Merion High School Kobe Bryant jersey on the 16th hole.

Max Homa wore his No. 24 Los Angeles Lakers gold jersey, also on the 16th hole.

Tony Finau played his round in Lakers purple-and-gold golf shoes.

Thomas arrived at TPC Scottsdale this week with his wedges stamped with tributes to Bryant: “Mamba mentality,” “Black Mamba,” “Kobe Bean Bryant” and “81 points.”

Thomas was asked how it felt to wear the Kobe jersey on the 16th hole.

“It felt great. I’ve played a lot of golf in that, believe it or not, so it felt pretty comfortable.

“He had such an impact on me and he was such a person that I looked up to and tried to kind of have my mental approach like that, I felt like it was very fitting. There’s only one tournament all year you can put a jersey on and hit a shot. Just the timing worked out to be here, so it was a no-brainer for me.”

Finau’s shoes were mostly purple with a gold Nike swoosh and the numbers 8 and 24, in reference to the two numbers, both since retired, that Bryant wore for the Lakers.

Finau spoke to reporters last Sunday after the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

“I’m a huge Kobe fan and a Laker fan single-handedly because of Kobe Bryant,” Finau said. “To have that happen to one of the greatest ever to play the game of basketball and one of the greatest athletes in sports is so tragic.”

Best of: Max Homa roasts golf swings of Justin Thomas, other pro athletes, fans

Max Homa gave golf Twitter a hilarious break from the bickering by roasting people’s swings, including a lefty Justin Thomas.

Max Homa has staked his claim for “best golf follow” on social media.

If you follow the 29-year-old winner of last season’s Wells Fargo Championship, you know Homa has been producing entertaining content for some time now on Twitter (and has an epic bromance with Fox Sports’ Shane Bacon).

After the Old vs. New media debacle at the Presidents Cup clogged up everyone’s feed, on Wednesday one of Homa’s followers thought it would be a “hilarious trend” if Homa roasted his swing like chef Gordon Ramsay critiques bad food.

Boy, was he right.

Dozens of fans asked Homa for his take on their swing, and he didn’t disappoint. The member of Cal’s 2013 national title team roasted everyone from weekend hackers to a lefty Justin Thomas, Paige Spiranac, the LPGA’s Jane Park, NBA forward Andre Iguodala and former MLB pitcher Jered Weaver. Homa even turned the tables on himself with a video of his own swing.

Here are our favorites:

PGA Tour golfer Max Homa hilariously roasted the golf swings of his Twitter followers

Max Homa is the funniest guy on the PGA Tour.

Max Homa is easily one of the funniest players on the PGA Tour who has long been an incredible Twitter follow if you enjoy the game of golf and people who don’t take themselves too seriously.

Homa picked up his first career win last season, which was pretty great considering how open he was about his struggles over the years. His win was a lesson in perseverance and believing in yourself.

Well, over the past few days he’s been giving swing critiques of his followers on Twitter who provided him with videos of their swing, knowing full well he would have fun roasting them. Homa fired off hilarious burn after hilarious burn that had everyone, including those who submitted their videos, dying laughing.

Here are some of my favorites.

This tank-top wearing trick-shot guy got it pretty good:

This one about marriage had me laughing out loud:

This one brought tears to my eyes:

His honesty is the best part of this one:

Some more great golf humor:

And finally, Homa came from off the top rope on this one:

Never change, Max Homa.
