Jaguars dealing with injuries to pair of key special teamers

Jaguars dealing with injuries to pair of key special teamers

The Jaguars are dealing with injuries to a pair of key special teamers, punter Logan Cooke and long snapper Ross Matiscik, ahead of Jacksonville’s Week 14 road matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

Cooke and Matiscik will appear on Jacksonville’s Week 14 injury report with lower-body injuries undisclosed at press time, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson revealed Wednesday.

Jacksonville signed punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington to its practice squad on Tuesday, anticipating Cooke and Matiscik’s limitations or potential unavailability.

“Both guys won’t practice today, so we just need to get the reps from that position,” Pederson said. “So, these two guys, we brought them in to fill that need.”

In his seventh season as Jacksonville’s starting punter, Cooke is averaging career-highs of 51.3 yards and 46 net yards per punt. 54.2% of his punts have been pinned inside the 20-yard line, also trending toward a career-best.

Matiscik has started 79 consecutive games at long snapper for the Jaguars since 2020. He earned First-Team All-Pro recognition in 2023 after recording eight special teams tackles.

Haack has punted 453 times with a 44.7-yard average in his eight-year NFL career, over four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and one-season stints with the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. He has pinned 169 punts inside the 20-yard line and recorded 26 touchbacks.

Addington returned to Jacksonville after briefly playing for the Jaguars during the 2023 preseason. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Commanders and Dolphins since entering the NFL in 2022. He has appeared in 10 games and recorded one tackle.

Jaguars make practice squad moves, add QB John Wolford

Jaguars make practice squad moves, add QB John Wolford

The Jaguars made six practice squad moves Tuesday, signing quarterback John Wolford, punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington and releasing offensive lineman Jerome Carvin, defensive end Joe Gaziano and cornerback Tyler Hall from the unit.

Wolford, who starred at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville from 2010-14, once held the state of Florida’s all-time high school passing records for yards (10,621) and touchdowns (126). He went on to throw for 8,794 yards with 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in four seasons at Wake Forest.

An undrafted free agent in 2018, Wolford originally signed with the New York Jets but was released before the regular season began.

Wolford was drafted by the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football that November and threw for 1,617 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games during the AAF’s lone season.

Wolford re-entered the NFL after the AAF suspended operations in April 2019, signing with the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent four seasons backing up quarterbacks Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. He completed 61-of-104 passes for 626 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions over seven games and four starts.

Wolford signed with Tampa Bay’s practice squad before the 2023 season and joined the Buccaneers active roster last November. He re-signed with the Buccaneers this offseason but was released in August.

Haack joins the Jaguars as an insurance plan for starting punter Logan Cooke, who, according to head coach Doug Pederson, was dealing with soreness in his left knee after Jacksonville’s 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Giants released Haack on Nov. 5 after he made four appearances for New York, punting 21 times.

Addington returns to Jacksonville after briefly playing for the Jaguars during the 2023 preseason. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Commanders and Miami Dolphins since entering the NFL in 2022. He has appeared in 10 games and recorded one tackle.

Giants release punter Matt Haack, add OL Bryan Hudson to practice squad

The New York Giants have terminated the contract of punter Matt Haack and signed offensive lineman Bryan Hudson to their practice squad.

During his first press conference of Week 10, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll intimated that kicker Graham Gano and punter Jamie Gillan could return as soon as Sunday’s game in Germany.

“I still have to meet with our medical guys, but I think Graham is getting close. How close he is right now, I think we’ll know here in the next couple days,” Daboll said on Monday.

“I think that (Gillan) progressed well. We’ll see here (on Tuesday) or Wednesday where he’s at. I think he has a chance.”

While the jury is still out on Gano, the Giants made it abundantly clear on Tuesday that Gillan is back.

Shortly after releasing cornerback Nick McCloud for salary cap purposes, the Giants quietly terminated the contract of punter Matt Haack, who had served as Gillan’s replacement.

In four games this season, Haack punted the ball 21 times for 988 yards (47.0 y/p) with an average net yards per punt of 39.0. He downed nine punts inside the 20-yard line and had just one touchback.

The Giants are also signing undrafted rookie offensive lineman Bryan Hudson to their practice squad, reports Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic.

Giants signing veteran punter Matt Haack

With punter Jamie Gillan (hamstring) hurt, the New York Giants are signing veteran punter Matt Haack.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll came under serious heat earlier this season when he let kicker Graham Gano play in a game with an already injured hamstring.

That decision resulted in Gano being placed on injured reserve (IR) after aggravating the injury and appearing in just two games this season.

Gano didn’t have a backup, so his loss after the opening kickoff left the Giants scrambling for a kicker.

Looking to avoid that same fate with punter Jamie Gillan, who is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a hamstring injury, the Giants are signing veteran punter Matthew Haack after working out several punters on Friday.

https://twitter.com/adamschefter/status/1845122122437312569

For the first six seasons of his career, Haack didn’t miss a game for whichever team he signed with. In 2023, he only played in one game for the Cleveland Browns and didn’t play anywhere else.

Over his seven-year career, Haack has punted 432 times. His longest punt was 70 yards, and his average is 44.5 yards.

Gillan is a better punter than Haack, and the Giants have come to rely on him, so if he can go on Sunday then he will. But Daboll learned from his mistake with Gano and is getting a backup plan in place for the Giants’ primetime outing this week.

Giants work out several punters with Jamie Gillan injured

The New York Giants worked out Nolan Cooney and four other punters after Jamie Gillan (hamstring) popped up on the injury report.

New York Giants punter Jamie Gillan was a surprise addition to the injury report on Friday, being listed as questionable with a left hamstring strain.

With only two days before their Sunday night kickoff, the Giants hosted several punters in the event Gillan is unable to play against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Among those in attendance was Nolan Cooney, a former Syracuse punter who has played for the New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In four career games, Cooney has punted 13 times for 592 yards (45.5 ypp) with two being downed inside the 20-yard line.

Punters Pressley Harvin, Matt Haack, Lou Hedley, and Ty Zentner were also in attendance for the private workouts.

None of the five punters who worked out were immediately signed but that could come on Saturday if the Giants opt to place linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux (wrist) on injured reserve (IR).

Given that Gillan also serves as the team’s holder on point after and field goal attempts, whoever the Giants sign would also have to take on that responsibility.

Buffalo Bills sign punter Matt Haack again

Punter news:

Along with a series of departures from the Buffalo Bills, we had a few arrivals.

Mitch Trubisky returns as backup quarterback, meanwhile, there is punter news.

The Bills announced that Matt Haack was re-signed again by the team. He inked a one-year deal.

Haack spent 2021 with the Bills and was signed to the 2023 roster ahead of the Bills’ divisional matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

What makes Haack’s addition interesting is because of why he was signed before that Chiefs outing. Punter Sam Martin was injured so Haack was added as insurance.

But Martin is not a pending free agent. He’s still on Buffalo’s roster and now Haack has been added.

With the slew of players leaving the Bills in recent days, Martin could end up soon following. He has a cap hit of $2.285 million and would free up approximately $1.9M on the cap if released. He could also restructure his contract, too.

Finally, there could be a world where Buffalo has a punter battle in training camp this upcoming offseason. Keeping an eye on Martin in the coming days is the more likely option.

Bills Wire will continue to bring roster updates throughout the 2024 offseason.

Bills sign P Matt Haack as precaution ahead of divisional round vs. Chiefs

#Bills sign Matt Haack as Sam Martin precaution:

The Buffalo Bills are making sure to cover all their punting bases as their postseason journey continues.

During the Bills’ 31-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, a slew of injuries hit the team. Among them was punter Sam Martin, who pulled up after running after a ball carrier. It appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Martin managed to punt one more time against Pittsburgh, but he was in some pain.

As a precaution, Buffalo brought back punter Matt Haack to the practice squad. In the event Martin cannot play against the Kansas City Chiefs in the upcoming divisional round, Haack will take over the duties.

Haack is a familiar name as he punted for the team in 2021. Haack wasn’t great, averaging 37.6 yards per punt. However, he has experience working alongside kicker Tyler Bass. His experience holding for Bass is another factor that likely led to Haack being re-signed.

Bills Wire will continue to provide all injury updates ahead of the divisional round.

Browns’ 55-man gameday roster as Riley Patterson, Matt Haack elevated from practice squad vs. Jets

Here is Cleveland’s gameday roster after they elevated two from the practice squad.

As the Cleveland Browns get set for their Week 17 showdown against the New York Jets, they were forced to elevate two special teamers from their practice squad. With kicker Dustin Hopkins out and punter Corey Bojorquez listed as questionable, both Riley Patterson and Matt Haack will dress for the Browns tonight.

Hopkins, however, was not placed on Injured Reserve, as head coach Kevin Stefanski has stated he is week-to-week. While he may not return next week against the Cincinnati Bengals, there is hope that he will be back for the playoffs as the Browns have the opportunity to punch their ticket tonight.

Can the Browns overcome a couple more injuries as they look to seal their postseason fate against the Jets tonight?

After the elevation of Patterson and Haack, here is the Browns’ 55-man gameday roster. As a reminder, the inactives list of players who will not dress will drop 90 minutes before gametime.

Browns elevating K Riley Patterson, P Matt Haack from practice squad vs. Jets

The Browns will start their practice squad kicker and punter against the Jets

The Cleveland Browns have elevated kicker Riley Patterson and punter Matt Haack from their practice squad to the active roster today as they get set to take on the New York Jets in their Week 17 showdown.

Both kicker Dustin Hopkins and punter Corey Bojorquez were hurt in the blowout win against the Houston Texans on Sunday. Hopkins was ruled out earlier this week, while Bojorquez has been listed as doubtful. The elevation of Haack is an indication that Bojorquez will not suit up against the Jets either.

With a chance to clinch their spot in the playoffs tonight, the Browns will need to rely on their special teams to get the job done when needed. This was missed a week ago, and the Browns were forced to attempt to convert fourth down conversions in field goal range due to the lack of a kicker.

Can Patterson knock the ball through the uprights when called upon? Can Haack flip field position the way Bojorquez has been able to?

Report: Browns sign P Matt Haack to practice squad with Corey Bojorquez sidelined

The Browns have added Matt Haack to their practice squad as starting punter Corey Bojorquez left Sunday’s game with an injury

First, the Cleveland Browns were forced to add kicker Riley Patterson to their practice squad due to a hamstring injury to their starting kicker Dustin Hopkins. Now, they have had to do the same with their punter as Matt Haack has been signed to the practice squad with Corey Bojorquez dealing with an ailment as well (according to Mike Garafolo).

With the Browns set to take on the New York Jets off on a short week, it is a pretty safe bet that both of their practice squad elevations will be these two special teamers. If the Browns had a chance for a full week to recover, this situation may look a bit different, but Cleveland will deal with the hand dealt to them by their schedule this week.

Haack, a six-year pro, has been the starting punter for the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and most recently with the Indianapolis Colts. Thursday night, presumably, will be his first taste of regular season action during the 2023 season.
