Chiefs promote TE Matt Bushman from the practice squad

Chiefs promote TE Matt Bushman from the practice squad | from @EdEastonJr

The football world continues to await the game-night status of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s knee following Tuesday’s injury.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, The Chiefs have made an interesting roster move today by promoting tight end Matt Bushman from their practice squad. The move comes only hours away from kickoff, with heavy uncertainty surrounding Kelce’s health.

“The #Chiefs are elevating TE Matt Bushman from the practice squad for tonight’s game against the #Lions,” said Rappaport in a post. “Source said Insurance in case Travis Kelce can’t go.”

The Chiefs signed Bushman after going undrafted in 2021 and a brief stint on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad. He performed well in the last two preseason in Kansas City, and although he didn’t make the 53-man roster, the Chiefs were able to sign him back to the practice squad last week. In 2021, Bushman finished his standout college career at BYU with 125 receptions for 1,719 yards and nine touchdowns.

WATCH: Chiefs TE Matt Bushman catches touchdown to tie game vs. Browns

#Chiefs TE Matt Bushman made this clutch catch to even the score in Kansas City’s preseason finale against the #Browns.

The Kansas City Chiefs have successfully come back from a 19-point deficit to take the lead against the Cleveland Browns in their preseason finale and control their destiny heading into the fourth quarter of the matchup.

After a Dicaprio Bootle interception put Kansas City in favorable field position late in the third quarter, quarterback Chris Oladokun found tight end Matt Bushman for this impressive touchdown to tie the game.

Safety Justin Reid came in to nail the point after, which officially gave Kansas City their second lead of the game after seeing their first-quarter advantage evaporate after offensive dysfunction derailed their efforts early in the game.

Bushman has proven to be a consistent presence with the Chiefs’ second and third-team offensive units, and with fan-favorite tight end Jody Fortson out due to injury, he has a chance to sneak onto Kansas City’s 53-man roster next week.

Plays like this will certainly help him secure a coveted regular-season roster spot, and if he can make another touchdown catch in the fourth quarter of this game, Bushman could solidify his spot as the Chiefs’ fourth tight end.

WATCH: Patrick Mahomes finds four receivers for touchdowns in Chiefs’ red zone drills

Patrick Mahomes found four different receivers for touchdowns during the #Chiefs’ red zone drills at Sunday’s practice session.

The Kansas City Chiefs got to work on their red zone offense during practice on Sunday, and Patrick Mahomes put on a show for fans in attendance at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

Kansas City Sports Network got film of four touchdowns that the reigning MVP threw, all to different receivers, during the Chiefs’ red zone passing drills. KCSN posted videos of the simulated scores to Twitter.

Check out all four passes below, and notice how effectively Mahomes dissects Kansas City’s defense to get his receivers the ball:

These 6 Chiefs could play their way onto the 53-man roster

Our @goldmctNFL takes a look at some #Chiefs who could play their way onto the 53-man roster during training camp and the preseason.

Every year there seem to be a few players who sneak onto the Kansas City Chiefs’ 53-man roster after strong performances during training camp and the preseason.

Last season, Brett Veach indicated that four players managed to play their way onto the 53-man roster. Which players could be in line to have similar types of performances in the coming weeks and play their way onto the initial 53-man roster for the 2023 NFL season?

We’ll take a look at a few key candidates down below:

Chiefs sign preseason standout TE Matt Bushman to practice squad

After LB Elijah Lee was poached by the #Bears, the #Chiefs signed preseason standout TE Matt Bushman to the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a preseason standout on the practice squad after a player was poached.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chicago Bears signed LB Elijah Lee from the Chiefs’ practice squad on Tuesday. The K-State alumnus leaves Kansas City having appeared in five games this season, mostly on special teams, with six total tackles and one fumble recovery. He’ll provide depth for the Bears with news that LB Jack Sanborn is out for the season.

With both Jody Fortson and Noah Gray dealing with injuries at the tight end position, the Chiefs opted to fill Lee’s spot on the practice squad with a familiar face. The team signed TE Matt Bushman to the practice squad per the personnel notice.

Fans may recall that Bushman had a monster performance in preseason Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. He led the team in yards with 73 and touchdowns with two. Unfortunately, Bushman suffered a fractured clavicle on his final reception during that game. He was subsequently waived with an injury designation and reverted to the team’s injured reserve list. He was later waived from the injured reserve list with an injury settlement.

Now, Bushman rejoins the team with tight end depth suddenly thin. Blake Bell has been designated to return from injured reserve, but it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to be activated. Kendall Blanton is the only other tight end on the practice squad in Kansas City, so Bushman could see some opportunities down the stretch.

Chiefs waive TE Matt Bushman from IR with injury settlement

The #Chiefs have waived a preseason standout from injured reserve with an injury settlement.

After waiving him with an injury designation during 53-man roster cuts, Chiefs TE Matt Bushman reverted to the team’s injured reserve list. Now, the Chiefs have waived Bushman from injured reserve with an injury settlement according to the NFL’s daily personnel notice.

Bushman was one of the stars of the Chiefs’ final preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. He led the team with 73 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions. On his third and final catch of the evening, Bushman fractured his clavicle, ending what was an impressive performance on a very sour note.

The team’s decision to waive Bushman from injured reserve could open up the possibility of his return in the future. Should he clear waivers, he could be re-signed to either the 53-man roster or the practice squad in Kansas City once he’s healthy. The Chiefs have done this in the past before with WR Gehrig Dieter.

It’s unclear how many games Bushman’s injury settlement will cover, but we can assume a minimum of six weeks given his injury. This move should also save the Chiefs around $300K against the salary cap.

Chiefs TE Matt Bushman reverts to injured reserve after waived-injured designation

#Chiefs TE Matt Bushman reverted to the team’s injured reserve list after being waived-injured during 53-man roster cuts.

One of the stars of the Kansas City Chiefs’ final preseason game has ended up on injured reserve.

Per the NFL’s official personnel notice from the waiver-claim period, Chiefs TE Matt Bushman cleared waivers and was placed on injured reserve. He was waived with an injury designation which means that he reverts to injured reserve now that he has cleared waivers.

Bushman is a former undrafted free agent out of BYU who has spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders. He was a big-time standout during preseason Week 3 for Kansas City against the Green Bay Packers. He led the team in yards (73) and touchdowns (2), including a 56-yard touchdown reception. Unfortunately, he fractured his clavicle on his final reception of the game.

Bushman’s addition to the injured reserve list means that he can not be designated to return from the list this season. The team can choose to waive him from injured reserve with an injury settlement (typically players are paid for the number of games missed). He can then re-sign with the team later once he is healthy as we discussed with RB Derrick Gore’s release from IR during the preseason.

Chiefs TE Matt Bushman named secret superstar of preseason Week 3

#Chiefs TE Matt Bushman was named one of the Secret Superstars of preseason Week 3 by our friends at @TheNFLWire.

No player for the Kansas City Chiefs was more of a standout in preseason Week 3 than TE Matt Bushman.

After not playing in preseason Week 2 due to what Andy Reid said was a knee issue, Bushman burst onto the scene in Week 3 with a monster performance. He led the team in yards (73) and touchdowns (2), kicking off his big day with a 56-yard touchdown reception in what appeared to be a coverage bust by the Green Bay Packers.

“Bushman’s got phenomenal hands and he’s shown that all through (training) camp,” Chiefs HC Andy Reid said after his performance.

Our friend Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire named Bushman one of the NFL’s Secret Superstars of preseason Week 3. He had this to say about the performance:

“An undrafted free agent out of BYU who signed with the Raiders in 2021 and had no targets in two games, Bushman signed with the Chiefs and helped his new team against the Packers with two touchdown catches, and three receptions overall for 73 yards. He kinda looked like a nice reinforcement for when the Chiefs want to throw some two-tight end packages together with Travis Kelce and whoever’s around.”

Unfortunately, Bushman suffered a fractured clavicle on his final catch of the night. That puts his chances of making the 53-man roster in doubt. Those chances were already slim with Jody Fortson and Noah Gray also looking like locks to make the team, but the injury to Blake Bell offered some hope. It’s possible that Bushman heads to injured reserve during 53-man roster cuts and is later released with an injury settlement before rejoining the team on the practice squad.

Secret Superstars for Week 3 of the 2022 NFL preseason: The offense

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar lets you in on the most prominent under-the-radar offensive performances in the final week of the 2022 NFL preseason.

With final cuts just around the corner (all teams must reduce their rosters to 53 by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. EST), and the 2022 regular season starting Thursday, September 8, anybody who doesn’t have a lock on a starting job tends to see the final week of the preseason as a sort of Hunger Games. At this point, you’re not just trying to impress your coaches and your teammates — you’re just trying to hang onto the roster spot you have, or give enough of an effort to make other teams aware. Perhaps one of those teams will pick you up if you do get cut.

Our Secret Superstars list for that final week of the preseason has a lot of guys who may have either evaded the Turk (the guy who comes to your room, knocks on your door, and quietly asks you to bring your playbook to the head coach’s office to let you know you’re off the team), or have done enough to eliminate any doubt as to their veracity as starters in the league.

The clock is ticking, oxygen is getting thin, and it’s all about to be for real. Here are the under-the-radar players who did the most to advance their cases for themselves in Week 3 of the 2022 preseason. Since there were so many of them this week, we’re splitting the list into two parts. Here are the offensive Superstars, and we’ll have the defensive Superstars up presently.

Chiefs TE Matt Bushman questionable to return vs. Packers with shoulder injury

The #Chiefs have ruled preseason Week 3 standout TE Matt Bushman questionable to return with a shoulder injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs have seemingly lost their leading receiver in preseason Week 3 to an injury.

The team announced that tight end Matt Bushman is questionable to return to the game with a shoulder injury. Right in the midst of a breakout preseason game, Bushman has caught 3-of-3 passes for 73 yards and two touchdowns through three-quarters of play.

The final pass he caught was a 17-yard reception and that seems to be the play that he was injured on. He popped up from the play and was shaking out his shoulder, which was clearly bothering him after he was taken to the turf.

Bushman was escorted to the locker room by the training staff and it’s hard to imagine him returning to the game. His breakout performance was intriguing given the recent injury to Blake Bell. It also could have raised his value in a trade situation, but the injury now clouds that opportunity. Hopefully, the injury is a minor one. If it isn’t, the team can opt to stash Bushman on injured reserve.
