Report: Sixers have expressed interest in Timberwolves big man Naz Reid

The Philadelphia 76ers have expressed interest in acquiring Minnesota Timberwolves big man Naz Reid in a deal.

As the Philadelphia 76ers and the rest of the NBA prepare for the Feb. 9 trade deadline, there are going to be a great many names attached to each team and a lot of ideas being thrown out about what each time might or might not do.

The Sixers are in a position where they are serious contenders for the title in the 2022-23 season. Led by Joel Embiid and James Harden, they have a serious chance at winning a title.

However, there is one spot that needs clarity: the backup center spot. Coach Doc Rivers has maintained he will turn to his duo of Montrezl Harrell and Paul Reed, but realistically, it would help if everybody had a set role as they move forward.

One name that has popped up is Minnesota Timberwolves big man Naz Reid. He has taken advantage of the playing time given to him in the wake of the injury to Karl-Anthony Towns, and he has garnered a lot of interest at the trade deadline, including from the Sixers.

Per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon on Brian Windhorst’s podcast, “The Hoop Collective”:

You’re hearing a lot of smoke about Naz Reid. Philly’s another team that apparently has some significant interest there.

Now, what can the Sixers offer up for Reid? Matisse Thybulle’s name has popped up as both the Golden State Warriors and the Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Thybulle and, per Windhorst, there are other teams that have inquired as well:

McMahon mentioned Matisse Thybulle. He’s sort of reduced. I mean, he was the first guy off the bench last year. He was their sixth man and they’re so much deeper now that they barely use them. I’ve heard him attached to three or four different teams, the salary is low so we’re not talking about a significant thing.

The Sixers should probably go all in at this moment in time. Most would argue that the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks are more complete teams than Philadelphia, but the Sixers have just as good a chance as anybody else considering the immense talent of Embiid and the playmaking of Harden.

Adding a guy like Reid who’s averaging 10.4 points and 4.9 rebounds and shooting 53.4% to their bench unit would be a significant upgrade and it would fortify their title chances.

Report: Warriors having internal discussions about 76ers guard Matisse Thybulle

The 25-year-old defensive specialist is averaging 2.7 points, 1.2 boards and 0.9 steals in 12.1 minutes per contest during his fourth season with the 76ers.

With the trade deadline approaching, rumors are beginning to swirl about players that could be on the move before the Feb. 9 deadline.

With the Golden State Warriors’ battling for position in the middle of the Western Conference playoff race, the defending champs are beginning to be connected to players on the trade block.

On Wednesday, a report linked the Warriors to Philadelphia 76ers defensive specialist Matisse Thybulle. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Warriors have had “internal discussions” about Thybulle. The Warriors like him as a “defensive stopper,” per Pompey.

Along with the Warriors, the Sacramento Kings are monitoring Thybulle, according to Pompey.

Via The Philadelphia Inquirer:

Multiple NBA sources said the Golden State Warriors have had internal discussions about Thybulle and that they do like him as a defensive stopper. The Sacramento Kings are also reportedly monitoring his availability.

The Kings’ and Warriors’ interest makes sense and is something to pay attention to.

Via @PompeyOnSixers on Twitter:

Thybulle would add an instant boost to Golden State’s defensive presence on the wing. The 25-year-old has been named to the NBA’s All-Defensive second team for the last two consecutive seasons. However, Thybulle has struggled on the offensive end of the floor.

The Washington Huskies product is averaging 2.7 points on 43.5% hooting from the field and 33.3% shooting from long distance with 1.2 rebounds per game.

Through his four seasons with the Sixers, Thybulle is currently seeing the lowest amount of playing time in his career. Thybulle is currently averaging 12.1 minutes per game for the Sixers. Last season he averaged 25.5 minutes per contest.

Rumors will continue to circle as the trade chatter heats up with the deadline quickly approaching.

Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle addresses trade interest from Kings, Warriors

Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Thybulle addresses the trade interest in him from the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors.

PHILADELPHIA — The trade deadline can be stressful for a great many players around the league: Rumors and reports will fly all over the place regarding any player in the NBA.

Philadelphia 76ers defensive standout Matisse Thybulle is dealing with that. His name has popped up in recent reports. Both the Sacramento Kings and the Golden State Warriors have expressed interest in acquiring Thybulle.

All of that can be stressful, but Thybulle has learned how to be at peace with whatever happens.

“I let it bother me a lot in the past,” Thybulle said after a win over the Orlando Magic. “I think it helps, too, now, it’s not my first rodeo. Every single year, it’s kinda like the same situation. It’s like ‘You’re gonna get traded!’ until the very last minute when you don’t. I’ve gotten all the way there until it actually happens so, at this point, I kinda know the ropes.”

Knowing the ropes is important at this stage. This is Thybulle’s fourth season, and he understands that there will be reports from everywhere. Until something happens, he’s going to focus on himself.

“It helps that my family does as well,” he continued. “That’s one thing people don’t realize because you can protect yourself from this stuff, but when you have your grandma or your dad or — calling you like ‘Yo! Are you getting traded!?’ that’s a lot of stress. So now we’ve all been through it three years in a row, they know the rumors that they see are just rumors, and I’ll call them if anything’s gonna happen.”

It helps that Thybulle has Tobias Harris to lean on in the locker room. Harris has been through many trades and trade deadlines throughout his career.

“Tobias is always there when times are tough,” Thybulle added. “Even in games, I miss my first shot. He comes up to me ‘That’s a great shot! Get ready for the next one.’ And he’s the first one to cheer me on after it happens.”

Time will tell whether Thybulle will be in Philadelphia past the Feb. 9 trade deadline, but one thing’s for sure, his name will continue to surface. It will all be about how he handles all of it.

Sixers single out Tobias Harris for his defense after win over Magic

The Philadelphia 76ers single out Tobias Harris for his defense after they knocked off the Orlando Magic at home.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers needed some defensive stops in the second half when they hosted the Orlando Magic on Wednesday. The Sixers and the Magic were locked in a tight battle and the team that played defense first was going to walk away with a win.

Just as they did in the win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, Philadelphia turned to Tobias Harris to play defense against one of the opposition’s best scorers. In the win over Denver, it was Jamal Murray. On Wednesday, it was Magic rookie Paolo Banchero.

Harris locked Banchero up and he was a part of the talented Magic rookie shooting only 1-for-10 in the second half as the Sixers knocked off Orlando 105-94.

“He was good,” said Joel Embiid. “He took on the matchup. Obviously, Banchero has been playing well. We did a good job as a team and especially him.”

Orlando cut a 14-point lead down to one early in the fourth quarter and when they re-inserted Banchero into the game looking to steal another win as they did on Monday. Instead, Harris led a defensive charge against the rookie and that was a big reason why Philadelphia walked away victorious.

“Me and Dan Burke have been talking about him a lot about Tobias has given us everything on both ends,” said Matisse Thybulle. “Against the Nuggets at the end of the game, he guarded Murray. In this game, Banchero. He just continues to step up for us defensively and then just being really consistent on offense, too.”

After a shaky start on offense, Harris did end up with 16 points and he shot 7-for-10 from the floor and 2-for-4 from deep. When he gets to his spots on the offensive end and is able to find his rhythm, then he’s really tough to stop. He has always been that type of player.

It is the defense that stood out though on Wednesday. His defense on Banchero was a really big catalyst for getting this win.

“It’s not like he’s just rebounding well or he’s playing the passing lanes,” added Thybulle. “He’s being a super solid defender and being extremely versatile with who he’s doing it against.”

Player grades: Joel Embiid, Sixers bounce back, beat Magic in rematch

Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers bounce back to beat the Orlando Magic in the rematch at home.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough time at home on Monday in the first of this two-game mini-series with the Orlando Magic. They blew a 21-point lead in the loss so Wednesday’s rematch offered a chance at redemption and a way to bounce back.

Led by Joel Embiid and James Harden, they did just that. The Sixers led by as many as 14 and while the Magic did make a run at it and made it a game late, Embiid and the Sixers proved to be too much as they walked away with a 105-94 victory. The big fella had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead Philadelphia on a night they needed a win.

Harden added 26 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds, Tobias Harris had 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists, and Tyrese Maxey added 10 off the bench. Georges Niang had seven and four assists and Shake Milton added eight.

Here are the player grades following the win:

Report: Warriors had internal discussions about Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle

The Golden State Warriors now have interest in acquiring Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Thybulle as well.

The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 9, and now is the time teams really buckle down and decide their deadline plans. Now is the time for teams to figure out how they’re going to improve themselves.

The Philadelphia 76ers are one of those teams. They continue to build their team for the stretch run in the 2022-23 season as they chase a title. They also have to think about the future and financial issues.

Matisse Thybulle has recently popped up in trade rumors. The Sacramento Kings reportedly have expressed interest in him. The Kings want the defensive star as they push to make the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

Now, according to Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Golden State Warriors have an interest in Thybulle as well.

Per Pompey:

Multiple NBA sources said the Golden State Warriors have had internal discussions about Thybulle and that they do like him as a defensive stopper. The Sacramento Kings are also reportedly monitoring his availability. A league source confirmed the interest, saying Kings coach Mike Brown is a fan of Thybulle, who would add a defensive presence to Sacramento’s starting lineup. The Kings (28-21), who surprisingly sit at third place in the Western Conference, are pondering upgrades for a postseason push after an NBA-record 16 straight seasons without a playoff appearance. The Kings’ and Warriors’ interest makes sense and is something to pay attention to.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Thybulle. If it’s the Warriors, a multi-team trade might have to happen to make such a deal work considering Golden State might not have what Philadelphia wants.

Sixers impressed by Magic rookie Paolo Banchero after big performance

The Philadelphia 76ers were impressed by Orlando Magic rookie Paolo Banchero after his big performance.

PHILADELPHIA — It’s hard for anybody to go into the Wells Fargo Center and knock off the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are such a good team at home not only due to their talent but also due to the passionate fans in the city and how loud it can get.

For a young team, the Orlando Magic’s win on Monday was impressive. Given they trailed by as many as 21 points, they had to dig deep to rally.

Orlando rookie Paolo Banchero spearheaded the comeback. The 2022 No. 1 overall pick had 14 points in the third quarter as the Magic outscored the Sixers, 42-28, to take control. Overall, Banchero had 29 points and 10 rebounds.

“He played well,” said James Harden. “He played well. He made shots. He made shots, big-time shots. He finished around the rim. He hit 3s. He did a little bit of everything.”

In the first half, PJ Tucker did a solid job against Banchero. The veteran bothered him into some tough shots and the talented rookie wasn’t able to find a rhythm.

That changed in the third quarter, though.

“Give him credit,” said coach Doc Rivers when asked what changed after halftime. “He’s a good player. He made some adjustments on his own. We didn’t change anything defensively, but we gave up 35 points in the second quarter, and we gave up 42 points in the third quarter.”

The Magic have a bright future led by their young talent. Players such as  Banchero are going to be the ones who lead the way in the win column.

“I think we lost him in transition,” Matisse Thybulle added. “He got some easy and-1s, and that kind of allowed him to get a good feel for the game and get comfortable. When good players get comfortable, they tend to make plays.”

The Sixers look to bounce back against the Magic on Wednesday at home.

Report: Kings monitoring Matisse Thybulle to acquire him from Sixers

The Sacramento Kings have been monitoring the availability of Matisse Thybulle to acquire him from the Philadelphia 76ers.

The NBA trade deadline is right around the corner as Feb. 9 continues to approach quickly. Now is the time for teams to make moves to position themselves either for a title run or to simply make the playoffs.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, their playoff spot is all but assured. Their focus is making sure they have a team that is ready to chase the championship they so desperately crave.

However, most believe the Sixers will make a smaller move to get below the luxury tax threshold. They are currently roughly $1.1 million above the luxury tax line and the focus could be moving Furkan Korkmaz or even Matisse Thybulle.

Per Marc Stein via his substack, the Sacramento Kings are monitoring Thybulle’s availability:

Sacramento is said to be monitoring the availability of Philadelphia’s Matisse Thybulle as the Kings, unexpectedly holding the West’s No. 3 seed after a league-record 16 consecutive seasons out of the playoffs, ponder the pursuit of a more defensive-minded option on the perimeter. One source with knowledge of the Kings’ thinking, meanwhile, insists that rival teams hoping for Richaun Holmes to become a buyout candidate if Sacramento can’t trade him (as mentioned here last week) are poised to be disappointed. A buyout would be complicated for both sides with two years and nearly $25 million left on Holmes’ contract after this season.

It would be tough for the Sixers to move Thybulle, who has such a positive effect when he’s out there on the floor, but Philadelphia needs a backup center. If Richaun Holmes is there for the taking and the Kings just want Thybulle, this may be the route they go.

Player grades: Paolo Banchero, Magic rally from 21 down to beat Sixers

Paolo Banchero and the Orlando Magic complete a 21-point rally in order to defeat the Philadelphia 76ers on the road.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the Orlando Magic on Monday looking to continue their hot streak. The Sixers had won seven games in a row entering the contest and they were looking to continue to grow and build as a team.

The Sixers raced out to a 21-point lead in the first half as they were in an offensive rhythm and they were playing some excellent defense. The Magic shot just 25.9% in the first quarter as Philadelphia was able to build their lead. However, Orlando made a spirited comeback led by rookie Paolo Banchero and former Sixers guard Markelle Fultz, and they walked away with a stunning 119-109 victory on the road.

Banchero had 29 points and 10 rebounds while Fultz had 12 points and 10 assists in his first game played in Philadelphia since the 2019 deadline deal.

Joel Embiid was terrific once again and led the Sixers with 30 points and 11 rebounds with five assists, James Harden added 17 points, six rebounds, and seven assists, Tobias Harris added 17 and six rebounds, and Tyrese Maxey had eight points. Matisse Thybulle added 10 points and Georges Niang had six points and four rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the shocking loss:

Matisse Thybulle preaching good habits for Sixers to build for success

Matisse Thybulle wants the Philadelphia 76ers to build good habits in order to have success out on the floor.

The Philadelphia 76ers are playing some excellent basketball as of late as they have won 20 of their last 24 games in order to move into the No. 2 seed in the East with nine games to go for the All-Star break.

The Sixers are setting themselves up for a big stretch run leading into the postseason led by Joel Embiid and James Harden. The Sixers have been terrific on both ends as the chemistry with this group and the way they play has been established. However, there can still be improvements to the way the team plays.

The Sixers still have moments where the pace gets slowed and they turn the ball over to allow opposing teams to get back into games. Therefore, there need to be good habits built for the Sixers.

“I think playing the right way and being ourselves because we’re talented enough to win games and, fortunately or unfortunately, we’re talented enough to win games and not play the right way,” added Matisse Thybulle. “So doing it the right way and building the habits for playoffs I think is really the biggest thing for us at this point.”

It’s important for the Sixers to be able to build these good habits and get it done in the playoffs. There was already pressured upon them before the season began, but their sports neighbors, the Phillies, Eagles, and the Union of MLS, have all made it to the championship round of their respective sports.

Now, it’s on the Sixers to be the next team that reaches the finals.

“It’s funny that we’re talking about that now because we were also talking about it before the season started,” Thybulle added. “The pressure for us to do well is always there because everyone believed that—everything that happened was kind of like manifested by the fans like everyone believed that this was gonna happen and it did. I don’t think anything’s really changed.”

With that being said, Thybulle and the Sixers have a lot of confidence that they can get it done in the 2022-23 season.

“I think it’s amazing that like teams are living up to their potential,” he finished. “I think we’re just gonna be the next ones up after the Eagles win the Super Bowl.”
