Matisse Thybulle discusses getting back in rotation for Sixers in win

Matisse Thybulle discusses getting back into the rotation for the Philadelphia 76ers in their latest win on Friday.

The Philadelphia 76ers needed to make some changes to the rotation following a tough 1-4 start to the season. They were having a lot of issues on defense in both the half-court and in transition and coach Doc Rivers made a move.

In Friday’s win over the Toronto Raptors on the road, Rivers made a move to put Matisse Thybulle on the floor when the team needed some help. The fourth-year wing player responded with six points, a steal, and two blocks in 22 minutes for his first extensive playing time of the young season.

He had only played five minutes total through the first five games combined so it took him a little bit of time to get back into his rhythm.

“It felt good,” Thybulle told reporters. “It always takes a little bit of time to start feeling like yourself. After the first couple up and downs, getting in the mix on a couple of defensive possessions, I started to feel sort of like myself. It’s just one game, right? There’s more to come and I hope to get more opportunities and help the team and hoping to be able to contribute a lot more.”

The Sixers will need Thybulle to produce on both ends of the floor in order to earn a permanent spot in the rotation. At the moment, Philadelphia is giving the backup wing player minutes to Danuel House Jr. and he has gotten off to a rough start to the season. This would offer an opportunity for Thybulle to get back into the swing of things and Friday’s effort could be the start of him getting back into the good graces of Rivers again.

Doc Rivers praises Matisse Thybulle after Sixers knock off Raptors

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers praises Matisse Thybulle for his play in a win over the Toronto Raptors.

The Philadelphia 76ers knocked off the Toronto Raptors, 112-90, on the road on Friday mainly due to Tyrese Maxey. The third-year guard dropped a career-high 44 points to offset the absence of Joel Embiid.

However, Matisse Thybulle played well off the bench in his first extensive playing time of the season. He played just under 22 minutes, and he had six points. He knocked down two 3s despite hesitating on his first triple when he looked a bit confused. He added a steal and two blocks. This comes after he played five minutes in the first five games combined.

After the win, coach Doc Rivers explained the decision to play Thybulle and he praised him for his effort.

“We talked to Matisse yesterday (Thursday) about it,” Rivers told reporters. “Again, at the start of the season, we thought we liked the rotation we’re going to have, and honestly, it wasn’t working for us and so we decided as a staff, we need to add a defensive guy to our group. Really, two defensive guys we’re going to add. We actually didn’t want other guys and so it worked out for us.”

Rivers then addressed Thybulle’s shooting as he took five 3s on Friday making the two. This was after he overcame the initial confusion and it allowed him to flourish and get the job done.

“The key for him is there’s gonna be teams that try to game plan him and not guard him,” Rivers continued. “He’s worked on his shot, and it just got to keep shooting it, and really, I was really proud of them because that first play where you get stuck with the ball. Usually, you don’t come back and shoot the next one, but we told him ‘You have to shoot those’.”

Rivers compared what the Raptors were doing to Thybulle to what the Sixers were doing with Scottie Barnes. They left the second-year forward open and they were content with letting him shoot and he kept shooting. That is what Thybulle has to do.

“Just like we left Barnes open tonight (Friday),” Rivers finished. “He kept shooting them and making them so it’s part of the process.”

The Sixers head to Chicago to take on the Bulls and continue the road trip.

Multiple Sixers react to Tyrese Maxey going off to lead Sixers to win

The Philadelphia 76ers react to Tyrese Maxey leading the way in a win over the Toronto Raptors.

The Philadelphia 76ers needed a win on Friday when they took on the Toronto Raptors to continue their road trip. The Sixers were coming off a very tough loss to these Raptors on Wednesday and had to play without superstar Joel Embiid, who was out due to a right knee injury.

Without the big fella, they leaned on Tyrese Maxey, who responded with a career-high 44 points and eight rebounds to lead the Sixers to a 112-90 win over the Raptors.

After the team picked up the win, Maxey and his teammates reacted to the big performance as they got back in the win column as they told reporters:

Player grades: Tyrese Maxey leads Joel Embiid-less Sixers past Raptors

Tyrese Maxey steps up with a career game as the Philadelphia 76ers knock off the Toronto Raptors despite missing Joel Embiid.

The Philadelphia 76ers were in search of positives in their rematch against the Toronto Raptors on Friday as the four-game road trip continued. After a 1-4 start to the season, the Sixers needed something to feel good about.

Shortly before the game started, the Sixers learned they would be without Joel Embiid, as the team continues to manage his right knee injury recovery. In his place, Tyrese Maxey came to the rescue. He led Philadelphia with a career-high 44 points after an historic first half. He added eight rebounds and four assists as the Sixers came away with a 112-90 win over the Raptors.

James Harden added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists, Tobias Harris added 13 points and five rebounds, and De’Anthony Melton had 13 with six assists and five steals in a start. Montrezl Harrell had nine points and Matisse Thybulle added six off the bench while PJ Tucker added five points and five rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the much-needed win:

Who are the best trade options for the Philadelphia 76ers?

With the Philadelphia 76ers off to such a slow start, it’s now time to look at some possible trade options.

It’s not unusual for fans to start panicking a bit if a team loses some games early in an NBA season, particularly if the team has lofty expectations as the Philadelphia 76ers do after an offseason full of hype.

However, during a 1-4 start, familiar issues have popped up, and some are expressing concern.

There are still 77 games left. A championship is not won in October and there is much work to be done to get to that level. The Boston Celtics, for example, were struggling so much through the holidays that some even called for them to trade Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown before making a run to the finals in 2022.

If the Sixers do continue to struggle, some changes might have to be made. Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley ranked the top three trade assets for each team and here are the three for Philadelphia:

Player grades: Devin Vassell, Spurs send Sixers to tough 0-3 start

Devin Vassell and the San Antonio Spurs knock off the Philadelphia 76ers on the road to send them to an 0-3 start to the season.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers played host to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday looking to get into the win column after an 0-2 start. The Sixers took on two title contenders in those games so it was understandable that they dropped both games, but the Spurs offered a big opportunity to get going in the right direction again.

The Spurs were considered one of the worst teams in the league heading into the season, but they didn’t look the part on Saturday. San Antonio used a heavy dose of Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and good 3-point shooting to overcome the Sixers 114-105 and send Philadelphia to an 0-3 start.

Joel Embiid led the Sixers with 40 points and 13 rebounds, Tobias Harris had 15 points, Tyrese Maxey added 25 and five assists, and James Harden had 12, 12 assists, and nine rebounds. Georges Niang added eight points off the bench.

Doc Rivers explains Matisse Thybulle’s lack of playing time for Sixers

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers explains Matisse Thybulle’s lack of playing time to begin the season.

CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers are 0-2 following two extremely tough games to begin the 2022-23 season. They faced the Boston Celtics on opening night and then the Milwaukee Bucks.

Those are two of the best teams in the league, and they have been together for years. They know each other like the back of their hands, and they know what to do in clutch situations when the time calls for it.

So far through two games, Matisse Thybulle has been used merely as a defensive substitution. He played a grand total of 23 seconds on opening night and 18 seconds in Thursday’s 90-88 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Considering Thybulle has been a huge part of Philadelphia’s rotation in the past, this is a bit strange to see.

“It’s just the other guys,” said coach Doc Rivers. “It’s a pecking order right now, but he’s working his butt off and he’ll play. He’ll get a chance to earn more minutes at some point for sure, but right now Danuel House and the De’Anthony (Melton) are in front of him. We’re going with a smaller rotation, but he’ll have a chance to earn minutes at some point.”

Thybulle has been working on his 3-point shot all summer to be more of an offensive asset. When he does get his opportunity to play, he will have to show he is more than just a defender and show off his jumper.

Player grades: James Harden’s huge night not enough, Sixers fall to Celtics

James Harden has himself a huge night, but the Philadelphia 76ers weren’t able to capitalize in an opening night loss to the Boston Celtics.

BOSTON–The Philadelphia 76ers began a season filled with high expectations on Tuesday night on the road against the Boston Celtics looking to get off on the right foot. The C’s, who are the defending Eastern Conference champions, offered a tough test for the Sixers right off the bat.

After a slow start on the offensive end, Philadelphia was able to kick it into high gear, and they seemed to be in control, but the Celtics used their experience and their mettle to come away with a 126-117 win over Philadelphia. James Harden had himself a huge night going for 35 points and eight assists with eight rebounds and he knocked down five triples, but it wasn’t enough on this night.

Joel Embiid had 26 points and 15 rebounds, but he also had six turnovers, Tyrese Maxey had 21 points, and Tobias Harris added 18 points,

Here are the player grades following the loss on the road:

Doc Rivers reacts to Sixers not agreeing to extension with Matisse Thybulle

Doc Rivers reacts to Matisse Thybulle and the Philadelphia 76ers being unable to reach an agreement on an extension.

BOSTON — As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for the 2022-23 season on Tuesday ahead of taking on the rival Boston Celtics on the road, there is already a big question.

Matisse Thybulle and the Sixers were unable to agree to a rookie extension before the 6 p.m. EDT Monday deadline, and he will enter restricted free agency in the 2023 offseason. The defensive star out of Washington will play under a cloud of uncertainty this season.

Coach Doc Rivers, a former NBA player, never dealt with a situation like this as a player, but he understands the stress that can come from the position Thybulle is in and how it can affect him.

“Honestly, I had one year where I could’ve become a free agent and should have if I could do my career over again, so I’m not familiar with it as a player,” said Rivers. “It does with every player. This is a business, too, and so the human part of the game — of course, it plays with all of them even though everyone says it doesn’t, it’s gotta be on their mind.”

Thybulle has made back-to-back All-Defensive second teams, and he is looking to earn his money. The biggest thing for him is to continue to perform and add a jumper to his offensive arsenal.

If he can continue to be a game-changer on the defensive end and keep honing that jumper, his contract situation will take care of itself and he will find his stability.

“At the end of the day, you walk out onto the floor, you have to play, you have to perform,” Rivers added. “It’s a performance business and when you do that, everything takes care of itself.”

No rookie extension for Sixers’ Matisse Thybulle by deadline

As a result, Matisse Thybulle will head to restricted free agency in the summer of 2023.

According to Chris Haynes of Yahoo!, the Philadelphia 76ers and wing Matisse Thybulle did not reach agreement on a rookie extension by Monday’s deadline.

As a result, Thybulle will head to restricted free agency in the summer of 2023.

As a restricted free agent, Thybulle will be able to gauge offers from other teams when free agency opens. Should another team pursue the two-time NBA All-Defensive second-team performer, the Sixers will have an opportunity to match that contract. If they decline, he’ll be free to sign with that team, ending his tenure with the Sixers. If they agree to match, he’ll remain in Philadelphia.

This outcome could bode well for either camp. Depending on how this season plays out, a market to the wing’s benefit might not form enabling the Sixers to retain Thybulle at a lower salary than they would’ve had to pay if they agreed to a deal now.

On the other hand, Thybulle could outperform the Sixers’ bet, forcing their hand on a far bigger contract than they would’ve locked him in for had they consummated a deal before the 2022-23 season.

The swing skill that will make or break Thybulle’s wallet and long-term staying power in the NBA is his proficiency as a shooter. His offensive development has been disappointing to this point. However, after spending this past summer working on shooting, Thybulle connected on 4 of 11 3-point attempts in the preseason.

Thybulle is eligible for an extension that maxes out at $194.3 million over five years.
