UFC on ESPN 33 salaries: Curtis Blaydes leading earner as four fighters crack six figures

UFC on ESPN 33 was one of the rare events in the modern climate where disclosed fighter salaries have trickled into the public.

UFC on ESPN 33 was one of the rare events in the modern climate where fighter salaries have trickled into the public.

Curtis Blaydes (16-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC), who defeated Chris Daukaus (13-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) by second-round TKO in the main event of the card this past Saturday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, was the highest paid athlete on the card, netting $262,000 in disclosed earnings from the event.

The total salaries from the 12-bout card was $1,434,000, with just four names cracking the six-figure mark with their payouts.

MMAFighting.com received salary information from the Ohio State Athletic Commission on Tuesday.

UFC on ESPN 33 post-event facts: Neil Magny ties Georges St-Pierre’s win record, sets another

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC on ESPN 33, which saw Neil Magny tie Georges St-Pierre’s long-held wins records.

The UFC returned in front of crowds for non-PPV events in the U.S. on Saturday with UFC on ESPN 33 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The 12-fight card was capped off by a sensational showing from [autotag]Curtis Blaydes[/autotag] (16-3 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who used his hands and no wrestling to crush [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] (12-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) into a second-round TKO and remind everyone that he’s still a young and evolving player in the heavyweight division.

Blaydes set some personal records in the win, but there were other bits of UFC history across the card, as well. For more on the numbers, check below for 45 post-event facts to come out of UFC on ESPN 33.

Joanne Wood vs. Alexa Grasso, two more bouts added to UFC Fight Night on March 26

Joanne Wood vs. Alexa Grasso was scrapped last year, but they’ll get a chance to do it again.

[autotag]Joanne Wood[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag] has been rebooked for UFC Columbus.

Wood will take on Grasso at UFC Fight Night on March 26, promotion officials announced Wednesday. The event takes place at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, and airs on ESPN.

Wood (15-7 MMA, 7-7 UFC) and Grasso (13-3 MMA, 5-3 UFC) originally were scheduled to fight last November at UFC Fight Night 198, but Grasso was forced out because of an injury.

Wood has lost four of her past six fights. After defeating Jessica Eye at UFC 257, Wood dropped a unanimous decision to former title challenger Lauren Murphy at UFC 263. She drew Taila Santos after Grasso’s withdrawal and lost the bout by first-round submission.

Grasso was booked to fight Viviane Araujo next week at UFC 270. But when Araujo pulled out due to injury, the fight was scrapped. The 28-year-old Mexican fighter strung together her first winning streak in the UFC when she scored two consecutive wins over Ji Yeon Kim and Maycee Barber, and now she’ll turn her attention to Wood.

Also joining the UFC Columbus lineup is a middleweight matchup between Dana White’s Contender Series graduate [autotag]Aliaskhab Khizriev[/autotag] (13-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and fellow debutant [autotag]Abusupiyan Magomedov[/autotag] (24-4-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), and a matchup between ranked flyweights [autotag]Matheus Nicolau[/autotag] (17-2-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and [autotag]David Dvorak[/autotag] (20-3 MMA, 3-0 UFC).

With the additions, the UFC Columbus lineup includes:

  • Jan Blachowicz vs. Aleksandar Rakic
  • Amanda Ribas vs. Michelle Waterson
  • Sara McMann vs. Karol Rosa
  • Tucker Lutz vs. Seungwoo Choi
  • Askar Askarov vs. Kai Kara-France
  • Danaa Batgerel vs. Montel Jackson
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Matt Brown
  • Nate Landwehr vs. Lerone Murphy
  • Alexa Grasso vs. Joanne Wood

Matheus Nicolau thinks he should be flyweight top 10 after win over Tim Elliott

Take a look inside Matheus Nicolau’s win over Tim Elliott at UFC Fight Night 194 in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Matheus Nicolau[/autotag] beat Tim Elliott with a unanimous decision Saturday on the main card at UFC Fight Night 194 in Las Vegas.

Take a look inside the fight with Nicolau, who won for the fourth straight time and second straight time since returning to the UFC earlier this year.

UFC Fight Night 194: Tim Elliott vs. Matheus Nicolau odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 194 odds and lines between Tim Elliott vs. Nicolau Matheus, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a flyweight bout on the main card, Tim Elliott meets Matheus Nicolau Saturday at UFC Fight Night 194 – also known as UFC Vegas 39 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 194 Elliott vs. Nicolau odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 2 p.m. ET and the main card at 4 p.m. ET.

The southpaw Elliott has bounced back from a three-bout losing skid with back-to-back unanimous-decision victories over Jordan Espinosa and Ryan Benoit. His losses were against Deiveson Figueiredo, Askar Askarov and Brandon Royval, and those are nothing to be ashamed about.

Nicolau is working on a three-bout win streak, including a split-decision win over Manel Kape his last time out in March. It’s been over three calendar years since his last setback, a first-round KO/TKO against Dustin Ortiz in July 2018.

UFC Fight Night 194 Elliott vs. Nicolau: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Elliott (18-11-1) | Nicolau (16-3-1)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Nicolau (-200) is a little on the expensive side for me, but I think he is going to win. Get specific and take NICOLAU BY SUBMISSION (+480) for a strong value.

Nicolau has a pair of victories via submission in his last seven fights and is 5-0 via submission in 20 career professional fights.

On the flip side, Elliott has lost three of his past seven fights in the UFC via submission, including against Royval in May 2020.

Over/Under (O/U)

NO (+155): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a solid value at this price point, especially since I like Nicolau to tap out Elliott.

UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (+185) is also worth a small-unit play for a chance to nearly double up.

While I normally do a two-round block, I like NICOLAU TO WIN IN ROUND 2 (+1000) for a small-unit play as a standalone bet on the exact round.

Matchup Roundup: New UFC and Bellator fights announced in the past week (July 26-Aug. 1)

All the UFC and Bellator fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie in the past week.

MMA fight announcements are hard to follow. With so many outlets and channels available, it’s nearly impossible to organize.

But here at MMA Junkie, we’ve got your back.

Each week, we’ll compile all the newly surfaced fights in one spot. Every Monday, expect a feature listing everything you might have missed from the UFC or Bellator.

Here are the fight announcements that were broken or confirmed by MMA Junkie from July 26-Aug. 1:

Tim Elliott vs. Matheus Nicolau in the works for UFC Fight Night on Oct. 9

Tim Elliott will look to string together three consecutive victories when he meets rising Brazilian Matheus Nicolau.

[autotag]Tim Elliott[/autotag] will look to string together three consecutive victories for the first time in his UFC career when he meets a rising Brazilian.

Elliott (17-11-1 MMA, 6-9 UFC) takes on [autotag]Matheus Nicolau[/autotag] (16-2-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC Fight Night on Oct. 9 at a location and venue to be announced.

MMA Junkie verified the booking with a person close to the matchup following an initial report from MMA Fighting. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.

Glory MMA’s Elliott was able to snap a three-fight skid with back-to-back wins over Ryan Benoit and, most recently, Jordan Espinosa at UFC 259 in March. Elliott was scheduled to face Su Mudaerji at UFC Fight Night 190 on June 26, but Mudaerji was forced out due to a knee injury and the fight was scrapped.

Season 4 “Ultimate Fighter: Brazil” semifinalist Nicolau rejoined the UFC roster in 2021 after a surprise departure from the promotion in February 2019. He went 3-1 before getting released. In his return to the octagon at 125 pounds, Nicolau edged out former RIZIN bantamweight champion Manel Kape at UFC Fight Night 187 in March.

With the addition, the Oct. 9 lineup includes:

  • Marina Rodriguez vs. Mackenzie Dern
  • Jamie Pickett vs. Laureano Staropoli
  • Lupita Godinez vs. Sam Hughes
  • Felipe Colares vs. Chris Gutierrez
  • Mariya Agapova vs. Sabina Mazo
  • Alexandr Romanov vs. Jared Vanderaa
  • Phil Hawes vs. Deron Winn
  • Tim Elliott vs. Matheus Nicolau

UFC Fight Night 187 medical suspensions: Belal Muhammad faces 30 days after eye poke

Belal Muhammad isn’t facing a long time off after suffering a nasty eye poke against Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 187.

[mm-video type=video id=01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn/01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn-0004b90e420f9325ab0f18363a480e2c.jpg]

Thankfully, [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] isn’t facing a potentially long medical suspension coming out of UFC Fight Night 187.

Muhammad’s first headliner vs. Leon Edwards was ruled a no contest after Edwards accidentally poked him in the eye 18 seconds into the second round of their welterweight fight. Visibly in pain, Muhammad was unable to continue and, as a result, the fight was stopped without a winner.

Muhammad (18-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) was able to provide a positive update shortly after, stating that he suffered no permanent damage to his eye and was slowly starting to get his vision back. The medical report supports his claim as Muhammad will be prohibited from any contact for 21 days with no contest for 30 days, until he receives doctor clearance for his right eye.

MMA Junkie on Tuesday obtained the full list of suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com, the Association of Boxing Commissions’ official record keeper.

The full list of UFC Fight Night 187 medical suspensions includes:

UFC on ESPN+ 51 Kape vs. Nicolau: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Kape 15-5 | Nicolau 15-3-1

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

The Portuguese native KAPE (-135) lost a unanimous decision to Alexandre Pantoja in his UFC debut on Feb. 6, 2021, on the Overeem-Volkov card. Kape had registered three KO/TKO victories prior to arriving at the UFC level.

Nicolau will be making his second try at the UFC after going 3-1 in his first go-around, including a unanimous-decision win over Louis Smolka at UFC 219 on Dec. 30, 2017.

Kape is a powerful puncher and a well-rounded fighter who can also get it done on the ground. That versatility will serve him well against the black belt Nicolau, who will be looking to damage Kape with kicks to the calves. If Kape can limit the damage to his legs, he’ll win this one going away.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under (O/U)

Both of these young fighters are looking to stick around the UFC level for a while, and Kape is looking for his first-ever win with the company.

There will be nerves, as he tries for win No. 1, and Nicolau tries to get it right in his second go-around.

The books consider the distance bet a coin flip, but I think YES (-105) ‘WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE?’ is a tremendous play given the inexperience on both sides.

They will be careful, they will not do things to put themselves in danger, and I believe KAPE ON POINTS (+300) is worth a look, too.
