Titans designate Kyle Philips to return from IR among 3 moves

On Monday, Titans WR Kyle Philips took a big step toward returning from injured reserve.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kyle Philips took a significant step toward making his return from injured reserve on Monday.

The team announced it has designated Philips to return from injured reserve, which gives him a chance to return as soon as Week 5. However, he still has to be activated and won’t count against the 53-man roster until that happens.

In addition to that move, the Titans waived wide receiver Mason Kinsey — which could be a sign that Philips is indeed ready to return to game action this week — and interior offensive lineman Xavier Newman. Right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere will take one of those two roster spots.

Kinsey was handling punt return duties after the injury to fellow wideout and returner Kearis Jackson, who was replacing Philips in that role. Kinsey was fairly effective, averaging 12.5 yards per return.

Newman actually started at left guard in Week 2 in place of an injured Peter Skoronski but lasted just one quarter before being replaced by Dillon Radunz, who has held down the job since.

Titans promote Mason Kinsey, put Kearis Jackson on IR among 4 moves

Titans WR Mason Kinsey has been promoted to the active roster among 4 moves made Friday.

The Tennessee Titans made a total of four roster moves on the Friday before their Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns.

After suffering an ankle injury at practice during the week, wide receiver Kearis Jackson has been placed on injured reserve, the team announced. Jackson will miss at least the next four games.

Taking his spot on the roster is fellow wide receiver Mason Kinsey, who was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. Chances are Kinsey will handle punt and/or kick return duties while Jackson is out.

Now, a look at the rest of the moves the Titans made on Friday.

Mason Kinsey adds playing QB to list of ways he helps Titans

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel recently discussed the different hats WR Mason Kinsey wears at practice after he took some snaps at QB on Saturday night.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Mason Kinsey has been the definition of an underdog ever since the moment he arrived in Nashville after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Berry College.

Kinsey is someone who hasn’t found a way to crack the 53-man roster on a full-time basis just yet, but he’s clearly someone the team likes enough to continue to keep around.

While Kinsey is primarily a slot receiver and special teamer, he actually got a few snaps at quarterback during the Titans’ preseason victory over the Minnesota Vikings thanks to the injury to quarterback Will Levis.

“(On Friday) they told me there was going to be a chance if Malik (Willis) went down, obviously, which I’m glad he didn’t,” Kinsey said after the game on Saturday, per AtoZ Sports’ Buck Reising. “Before the game today, [head coach Mike Vrabel] was like, ‘I may put you in for a snap or two,’ so that was kind of cool he threw me a bone on that one.”

“It was a cool experience and it shows a little bit of trust, that they trusted me to do it,” Kinsey added. “It’s a compliment to me, for sure.”

On Sunday, Vrabel discussed what went into that decision and why he felt Kinsey deserved the opportunity.

“Mason is out there everyday,” Vrabel said, per Jim Wyatt. “During the time that he’s been on our practice squad, probably runs more than any player that we have on our roster. Running receiver, playing DB throughout practice that you guys may or may not see. I wanted to give him the opportunity.”

Vrabel and Kinsey both noted that the extent of his preparation consisted of a walkthrough of a play or two on Friday.

While Kinsey rightly got some attention for his role as the emergency signal-caller on Saturday night, he also played well as a receiver, with Kinsey leading the team with 37 yards in the winning effort.

Through two preseason contests, Kinsey has been the most consistent receiver on the team from a production standpoint, leading all Titans wideouts with 77 yards.

There’s no telling if his solid preseason will lead to a roster spot, but it’s clear that Kinsey has a fan in his head coach who, at the very least, genuinely appreciates everything he does for the team.

On offense, the highest grade went to wide receiver Mason Kinsey, who notched a 79.9. Kinsey has been the Titans’ most consistent receiver in preseason play and led the team in receiving yards on Saturday night.

Now, the rest of the PFF grades, as well as the offensive line, pass-rush and coverage stats from preseason Week 2.

Watch: Titans’ Malik Willis putting in work during break before camp

Titans QB Malik Willis remains hard at work during the offseason break before training camp.

While the Tennessee Titans and the rest of the NFL are on a “break” before training camp begins later this month, quarterback Malik Willis and wide receiver Mason Kinsey remain hard at work, as do many players.

Willis, who is coming off a rough rookie campaign and is entering his second season in the NFL, currently figures to be on the roster bubble after the team drafted Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.

By all accounts, the Liberty product has been outperforming Levis thus far, but doing that while in shorts and a t-shirt during the offseason program is hardly confirmation that Willis is locked into the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.

Instead, Willis must keep the momentum going during training camp and the preseason and continue to outplay Levis if he wants the No. 2 job and a spot on the roster. Failure to do that could leave Willis among the final cuts.

Here’s the video of Willis throwing to Kinsey recently. It was originally posted to Kinsey’s Instagram story.

In our quarterbacks preview for training camp, Willis beats out Levis for the No. 2 job and secures his spot on the roster. We’ll see if that comes to fruition once Tennessee makes its final cuts on August 29.

Titans’ Mason Kinsey among practice squad elevations for Week 7

Titans cult hero, WR Mason Kinsey, will play in his second career game if active.

The Tennessee Titans elevated a pair of players from the practice squad for the Week 7 contest against the Indianapolis Colts, including cult hero and wide receiver, Mason Kinsey.

Kinsey, who has been a darling of a certain sect of Titans fans since being signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020, will be playing in the second contest of his career, assuming he’s active.

Kinsey gets the nod over Dez Fitzpatrick, who was elevated last week but did nothing, as well as new practice squad addition, C.J. Board, who was brought in earlier this week.

The Titans were already short-handed at wide receiver but could also be without rookie slot receiver Kyle Philips, who was a late addition to the injury report on Friday with a hamstring issue and is questionable.

Along with Kinsey, linebacker Joe Schobert is also getting the nod from the practice squad with the team missing starting linebacker Zach Cunningham for a third straight game.

Schobert has now been elevated three times, meaning the team now must sign him to the active roster after this week or else he’ll be cut loose. The veteran made a huge impact play in Week 4 against the Colts, forcing a fumble that helped sealed Tennessee’s victory.

Ravens S Geno Stone discusses sensational interception in Week 1 of preseason vs. Titans

Baltimore Ravens safety Geno Stone spoke with the media about his interception in the team’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.

The Baltimore Ravens hosted the Tennessee Titans for their first preseason game of 2022 on Thursday night, coming away with their 21st consecutive exhibition game victory by the final score of 23-10. Baltimore’s ability to have playmakers on all sides of the ball is a great thing to have, especially when the team has so much depth.

During the game, Ravens safety Geno Stone made a spectacular interception during the fourth quarter. The safety caught a ball that bounced off Tennessee wide receiver Mason Kinsey while falling to the ground.

Following the contest, Stone spoke with the media. When asked about the play and the celebration with his teammates, Stone said the football gods were on his side.

“It was crazy, because before I walked out for the drive, I told them I was going to get a pick, and I said we’re going to come celebrate on the sidelines. I had two opportunities before that; I missed the one on the out, and then I broke the one up in the end zone, and then I finally got that last one. So, it was like the football Gods were just trying to give me a pick so I could go celebrate with my teammates.”

In two seasons, Stone has played in 17 games, starting in one. The safety is looking to make the final 53-man roster and have an increased role on the Baltimore defense, two things that he took a big step closer to doing in Thursday’s performance.

Titans ST coach talks returner candidates, Caleb Shudak injury

Titans special teams coach Craig Aukerman revealed who may be competing for a return job in 2022.

The Tennessee Titans began their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, which will be the only session that is open to the media.

But before hitting the field, Tennessee’s coordinators met with the media, including special teams coach Craig Aukerman.

Aukerman touched on the competition for punt and kicker returner, revealing which players are likely to compete for each spot. The only player currently on the roster who returned kicks or punts for the Titans in 2021 is running back Dontrell Hilliard.

At kick returner, Aukerman says running back Trenton Cannon and wide receivers Reggie Roberson, Kyle Philips and Racey McMath could all compete for the job.

At punt returner, Aukerman estimates that Philips, wide receiver Mason Kinsey and safety Amani Hooker will battle it out.

Tennessee’s special teams coach went into more detail in regard to what he likes about two of the aforementioned candidates, Cannon and Philips.

While Philips figures to be a near-lock to make the roster, the same cannot be said for Cannon, but there’s no doubt his special teams prowess will help his cause.

Aukerman also provided an update on UDFA kicker Caleb Shudak, who was impressive in rookie minicamp and during organized team activities before suffering a leg injury last week.

Shudak will not participate in practice on Tuesday, and there is no timetable for his return to the field.

The Titans could definitely use a shot in the arm in the return game. While Tennessee did finish ninth in the NFL in punt return average in 2021, they also finished 27th in kick return average.

The only gripe we have with the candidates listed here is Hooker, who is set to return to his starting role in 2022. Hooker is far too valuable to the defense to risk as a returner, so we hope the Titans won’t ultimately settle on him.

Titans sign 11 players to futures contracts

The Titans are bringing back Mason Kinsey and 10 other players on futures contracts.

Two days after being eliminated in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs, the Tennessee Titans locked up 11 players to futures contracts.

The list of players includes:

  • S Jamal Carter
  • OL Christian DiLauro
  • TE Austin Fort
  • OL Derwin Gray
  • QB Kevin Hogan
  • WR Cody Hollister
  • LB Joe Jones
  • WR Mason Kinsey
  • OL Daniel Munyer
  • OL Jordan Roos
  • LB Tuzar Skipper

All 11 players were part of the practice squad this season, with Cody Hollister playing in three games. The Arkansas product reeled in four catches for 33 yards, called upon for the oft-injured Julio Jones and A.J. Brown.

Wide receiver Mason Kinsey became the first player from Division III Berry College to sign an NFL contract when he inked a deal as an undrafted free agent with the Titans over the summer. He suited up for just one game this season against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 but didn’t see the field.

Quarterback Kevin Hogan played his collegiate football at Stanford and was signed to the Titans practice squad in mid-November after the Carolina Panthers signed Matt Barkley to their roster.

The futures contracts will become effective at the start of the new league year on March 16.

Tennessee Titans’ practice squad protections for Week 17

The Titans are protecting four practice squad players ahead of their Week 17 matchup against the Dolphins.

The Tennessee Titans have chosen the four practice squad players they are going to protect ahead of the Week 17 game against the Miami Dolphins.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Titans are protecting wide receiver Mason Kinsey, quarterback Kevin Hogan, center Daniel Munyer, and running back Jordan Wilkins.

The Titans might have to dip into their practice squad for Sunday’s game versus the Dolphins, as a total of 11 players are on the COVID-19 list.

Eight of those players are on the active roster and include wide receivers Julio Jones and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, right guard Nate Davis, defensive lineman Denico Autry, outside linebacker Bud Dupree, linebacker Jayon Brown, backup tackle Kendall Lamm, and cornerback Buster Skrine.

The good news for Tennessee is that all eight of those players could still play in Week 17 after the NFL and NFLPA agreed to modified COVID-19 protocols that will allow players who test positive to return after five days.

The Titans and Dolphins will meet on Sunday at Nissan Stadium, with kickoff set for noon CST.
