College football game-day odds: Notre Dame vs. Marshall

What are your picks today?

Not many coaches have started 0-2 at Notre Dame and without looking it up I would guess that even fewer started 0-3.  That’s what’s ahead for Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish this afternoon as they host Marshall in the 2022 home opener.

Some have joked about Freeman being on the hot seat with his 0-2 start as a coach and we all assume that first victory will come today with Notre Dame being a big home favorite.

It’s the first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Marshall and here are the latest lines, courtesy of Tipico Sportsbook:

  • Pointspread: Notre Dame -20.5 (that’s not a misprint)
  • Moneylines: Notre Dame -1400, Marshall +800
  • Total: 48.5 points

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET as the game can be seen on NBC.

Notre Dame vs Marshall Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

The Thundering Herd did what they were supposed to do in a tune-up opener, taking down Norfolk State 55-3.

Of course it was supposed to be an easy game, but it was the work the team got in that’s going to matter here.

Well-traveled transfer Henry Columbi hit 24-of-26 passes – and one of the misses was a pick – Ethan Payne and Khalan Laborn each ran for over 100 yards and two scores, and the defensive front was in midseason form.

The Herd have the D to give the Notre Dame running game trouble – the Irish only ran for 76 yards in the 21-10 loss to Ohio State – and Columbi is an all-around veteran baller who knows what he’s doing.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish defense is terrific.

The offense didn’t exactly open it up against Ohio State, but it’s got the line to start generating more of a push and be far, far better at keeping defensive fronts out of the backfield.

The secondary that helped the Buckeye attack in relative check isn’t going to be gouged by the Herd backs, and the secondary – among the best in the country; it didn’t give up the big play against the Buckeyes – will have no worries about the receivers getting deep.

Marshall isn’t going to bomb away, with most of the attack kept midrange and relatively conservative. Most importantly for the Irish …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

This week, the running game will work.

Marshall’s defense might have been great against Norfolk State, but it’s not going to be that much stronger against the run after getting gouged throughout last year.

The Irish offensive line will take over early, Tyler Buchner will have a nice game, and the team will sidestep this dangerous landmine on the way to the date with Cal.

Five keys for Notre Dame to defeat Marshall

The Irish need to put work in on Saturday

This week is different, the Irish are heavily favored and should breeze through the Thundering Herd. With that being said, this week instead of keys, we are going to take a look at areas the Irish need to work on after their week one loss. Here are the five areas that we would like to see this Notre Dame team improve on from the first to second week of the season.

Tale of the Tape: Team Stats – Notre Dame vs. Marshall

Not exactly numbers to be trusted after only one week.

Notre Dame can’t possibly figure out what kind of team it has after opening the season against Ohio State. Everyone knew the Buckeyes were the superior team, and they proved. Therefore, the numbers the Irish have below should be taken with a grain of salt, especially since they remain highly ranked. Hopefully sometime over the next couple of weeks, these numbers will reflect a winning team a lot more.

Marshall’s first game against Norfolk State was utter dominance, and you can see that in the numbers it has. However, going from a Football Championship Subdivision program to one like the Irish is about as monumental a step as one can take on the schedule, and the Herd are taking it. The numbers you’re looking at now likely is as good as it will get for the Herd this season. If you’re a Herd fan visiting our site (and thanks if you are), let it soak in from now until kickoff in South Bend.

Notre Dame social media goes full Wizard of Oz for home opener

Home opener hype!

In recent years Notre Dame has opened the home slate of the regular season by welcoming some huge brands to Notre Dame Stadium as Texas (2015), Michigan (2018) have both helped open the venue for the year but this year won’t offer quite the same punch with Marshall.

It’s the first meeting ever between Notre Dame and Marshall as the two have the Randy Moss and Cain Madden connections, and that’s about it in terms of history on the gridiron.  However, Marshall is a very accomplished program that because of a tragedy over 50 years ago, and because of great successes as a I-AA program in the late-90’s, draws more attention than other programs that are roughly the same caliber.

That wasn’t the direction the Notre Dame media team went with their hype video for the 2022 home opener though as they instead did their best Dorothy impressions from “The Wizard of Oz” by reminding Fighting Irish fans that there really is no place quite like home.  Take a watch below:

Notre Dame has also announced that Saturday’s game is now officially a sellout.

Know your foe, Marshall: Five Thundering Herd players who could give Notre Dame problems

The Herd put up 55 points last week and only allowed 3

After putting up 55-points and holding opponent Norfolk State to just a field goal, the Thundering Herd obviously opened the season with a bang. Their challenge this week will be much more difficult, as they travel to South Bend and face-off against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are 0-1, but are heavily favored and should handily defeat Marshall. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some players that give the Irish problems this Saturday and here are five from the Herd that could.

Some of my favorite moments from ‘We Are Marshall’

Some clips from an inspiring movie

Notre Dame has “Knute Rockne, All American” and “Rudy” to be associated with. The Irish’s upcoming opponent, Marshall, has “We Are Marshall”, which was born out of circumstances far more tragic than those of a legendary coach or an inspiring walk-on. This movie deals with the aftermath of the plane crash that killed nearly every player and coach for the 1970 Herd. The effort to rebuild the program makes you get behind it.

I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t one of my favorite football movies. I guess I’m just a sucker for these feel-good movies, even if this one doesn’t happen against the best backdrop. After all, this isn’t something anyone in their right mind would wish on any community.

With the Irish and Herd about to have their first meeting, I thought this would be a good time to look at a few memorable moments from the flick:

What the experts are predicting: Notre Dame vs. Marshall

The Irish got this, or so people think.

Notre Dame will have another chance get on the board for the 2022 season Saturday. Against a program like Marshall, that shouldn’t be a problem. Then again, college football has seen crazier things happen.

Let’s look at what some college football experts, including fellow College Wire sites, are predicting for this game:
