Lions host DT Malcom Brown on a visit

The Detroit Lions host free agent and former 1st round pick DT Malcom Brown on a visit

With the unsavory development on the Levi Onwuzurike injury front, the Detroit Lions have gone looking for outside help along the defensive line. The team held a visit with free agent DT Malcom Brown on Thursday.

Field Yates of ESPN was the first to report it, and a local source confirmed the visit to Lions Wire. There was no immediate word on if Brown would sign with Detroit.

Brown was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. The 2015 first-round pick out of Texas spent his first four years with the New England Patriots before signing with the New Orleans Saints. In his time in New Orleans, Lions DC Aaron Glenn and head coach Dan Campbell were both on the Saints staff. Brown had a career-high 57 tackles in 2021 in his one year in Jacksonville, also bagging two sacks and one PD.

At 320 pounds, Brown is more of a traditional nose tackle. But with the injury issues plaguing Onwuzurike and second-round pick Josh Paschal, overall depth remains an issue all over the interior defensive line.

Commanders work out former first-round pick

The Commanders work out veteran defensive tackle Malcom Brown.

The Washington Commanders are still on the lookout for depth at defensive tackle. While the Commanders have excellent starters in Pro Bowler Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, outside of second-round pick Phidarian Mathis, Washington is still looking for another player to step up.

That led to Washington recently working out defensive tackle Malcom Brown. Brown, 28, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. A former first-round pick of the New England Patriots back in 2015, Brown has appeared in 106 career games, making 97 starts.

After spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Patriots, Brown played two seasons for the New Orleans Saints and spent the 2021 season with the Jaguars.

David Bada, Tyler Clark and Justin Hamilton are among those battling for a roster spot. Washington has a roster exemption for Bada, who is a part of the International Player Pathway Program and has been with Washington since 2020.

Veteran defensive tackle Star Lotulelei also remains a possible option for the Commanders.

Brown, as a former longtime NFL starter, figures to have an active market the closer it gets to Week 1.

Colts vs. Jaguars Week 18 final injury report: TE James O’Shaughnessy, CB Xavier Rhodes ruled OUT

TE James O’Shaughnessy was the only player to surface in the status column of the Jags’ last injury report of this season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars only had one player surface in the status column of the final injury report of their 2021 season. That one player was tight end James O’Shaughnessy who continues to deal with a hip injury he sustained during the last offensive drive of the Jags’ Week 16 game against the New York Jets.

As for the changes that occurred on the Jags’ injury report, linebacker Dakota Allen (shoulder) was upgraded from limited to full. Fellow linebacker Myles Jack (knee) was also upgraded to full after not practicing on Wednesday and Thursday.

Lastly, veteran defensive lineman Malcom Brown returned to full participation after resting on Thursday.

As for the Indianapolis Colts, they ruled cornerback Xavier Rhodes out with a hamstring injury after he wasn’t able to practice this week. Additionally, defensive lineman DeForest Buckner was ruled questionable with a knee injury.

In terms of the changes that took place on the Colts’ end, receiver T.Y. Hilton (rest) was upgraded from limited to full and so was tight end Jack Doyle (knee).

Jaguars Week 18 injury report: TE James O’Shaughnessy sits out of practice again

The Jags had two veterans return from a rest day on Wednesday, but their were no changes to the injury report that were related to injured players.

The only changes the Jacksonville Jaguars had on their injury report Thursday were to players who previously rested as receiver Marvin Jones Jr. and linebacker Damien Wilson returned to practice after having Wednesday off. There was also the addition of defensive tackle Malcom Brown, who was rested on Thursday as the aforementioned veterans previously were.

Both linebacker Myles Jack (knee) and tight end James O’Shaughnessy (hip) remained on the sidelines as neither practiced for the second consecutive time this week. If Jack continues on the pattern from previous weeks, he should practice on Friday, but O’Shaughnessy’s status is up in the air, though interim coach Darrell Bevell felt there was a chance he could return for the Jags’ season finale earlier in the week.

As for the Indianapolis Colts, their injury report had three changes and a new addition to it (T.Y. Hilton was added for rest). For more on their situation, the Colts Wire has the latest.

Jags place 10 active roster players on Reserve/COVID-19 list

Jihad Ward, Andrew Norwell, Brandon Linder, and Malcom Brown are just some of the few notables who have been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list recently for the Jags.

The NFL has been dealing with a league-wide COVID-19 outbreak over the last few weeks, but the Jacksonville Jaguars avoided it in the early part of Week 16. However, their Reserve/COVID-19 list started to garner names the closer the team got to their last game against the New York Jets with linebacker Myles Jack, receiver Laviska Shenault Jr., and guard Ben Bartch going on it alongside others.

Now, heading into Week 17’s game against the New England Patriots, the team has placed another wave of active roster players on the list, five of which were on both sides of the ball. They placed one practice squad player on the list, too.

That list of names are as follows:

Of the 10 active players that went on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, seven of them have made at least three starts this season. Those players are tight ends Chris Manhertz, Dan Arnold, and Luke Farrell, guard Andrew Norwell, center Brandon Linder, defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson, and defensive lineman Malcom Brown.

The returns of the listed players could vary based on their vaccination status. Vaccinated players can return after two negative tests that are 24 hours apart. However, unvaccinated players have to miss at least 10 days.

So far, the only player who has been revealed as an unvaccinated player is Norwell, so it’s guaranteed that he won’t be back for the upcoming game in New England. However, if Bartch is cleared to come back from the Reserve/COVID-19 list, they could start him at right guard and put Will Richardson at left guard in Norwell’s place.

The tight end spot and defensive line will be the key positions to watch as they have multiple members from their respective groups that are listed. At tight end, the Jags are down to two players in Jacob Hollister and James O’Shaughnessy. But if needed, they could activate tight end, Matt Sokol, for this week from the practice squad.

As for the defensive line, the Jags have Doug Costin and Jeremiah Ledbetter on the practice squad to help if needed, too.

Jaguars Week 15 injury report: 4 starting OL upgraded to full participation

Seven players were upgraded to full participation on Thursday for the Jags. Offensive linemen Andrew Norwell and Brandon Linder was among them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars saw a lot of upgrades on the injury report Thursday as seven players were upgraded to full participation. Four of those players were members of the offensive line in Ben Bartch (back), Brandon Linder (back), Jawaan Taylor (ankle) and Andrew Norwell (back).

There were two other starters who were upgraded to full participation alongside the four offensive lineman in pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder) and receiver Marvin Jones, who had Wednesday off to rest. Receiver Tavon Austin also was upgraded to full participation after having Wednesday off for the same reason as Jones.

As expected, running back James Robinson (heel/knee) and linebacker Myles Jack (knee) continued their routine of not practicing on Thursday to help them recover from their lingering injuries which have placed them on the injury report for several weeks.

The last two notables who didn’t practice were running back Carlos Hyde (concussion) and defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe). Brown has been on the report for multiple weeks with the same injury, while Hyde was a new addition after sustaining a concussion in the second half of Sunday’s game against the Titans.

As for the Houston Texans, there were only two changes to the report as tight end Pharaoh Brown was added for an illness and running back Rex Burkhead (hip/quad) was upgraded to limited. For details on the Texans’ full injury report, head over to Texans Wire.

Jaguars Week 15 injury report: 5 starters miss Wednesday’s practice

EDGE Josh Allen (shoulder), LB Myles Jack (knee), OG Andrew Norwell (back), and DL Malcom Brown (toe) were the #Jaguars’ starters who missed practice Wednesday due to injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had seven players who missed practice Wednesday, four of which were starters and did so because of injury. Those four players were pass-rusher Josh Allen (shoulder), linebacker Myles Jack (knee), guard Andrew Norwell (back), and defensive lineman Malcom Brown (toe).

Additionally, two of the seven players held out simply sat to rest, and those players were receivers Tavon Austin and Marvin Jones Jr.

Allen, Jack, Brown, and Norwell were all on the injury report last week, but Norwell was on it because he was given Wednesday off to rest. Jack is likely to miss Thursday, too, as it was revealed that he and running back James Robinson would both miss the second practices of each remaining week.

Running back Carlos Hyde, who sustained a concussion Sunday against the Tennessee Titans after linebacker Derrick Robinson delivered a massive hit on him in the fourth quarter, didn’t practice either. Hyde was taken to the sideline by the doctors (under his own power) and didn’t return to the game.

Robinson (heel/knee) was among the group of players who were limited alongside center Brandon Linder (back), offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor (ankle), and guard Ben Bartch (back). Robinson. Linder, and Bartch are all players who were on the previous injury report, although Linder ended up not playing Sunday. However, this week it appears the veteran will be returning, which would be a huge addition for the offense.

As for the Houston Texans’ injury report, notables like running back Rex Burkhead (hip/quad) and defensive back Justin Reid (concussion/illness) didn’t practice and were among the nine players listed on the injury report. For more on their full report, head to Texans Wire.

Jaguars Week 13 final injury report: Griffin ruled OUT, Robinson ruled questionable vs. Rams

The Jags only had two players to surface in the status column of Week 13’s final injury report, but it’s two key contributors.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had two players surface in the status column of their final injury report for Week 13. As expected, one of those players was cornerback Shaquill Griffin (concussion) and the other was running back James Robinson (heel, knee).

The former was ruled OUT for the second consecutive week, while the latter was ruled questionable. However, the good news is that both were limited Friday, so it could be a good sign for Robinson’s status on Sunday and Griffin’s for Week 14.

Several other starters were upgraded on the injury report, too. Linebackers Myles Jack (knee) and Damien Wilson (ankle), and cornerback Tyson Campbell (shoulder) were all upgraded to full participation. Additionally, defensive linemen DaVon Hamilton (knee) and Malcom Brown (toe) were also upgraded to limited participation after not practicing on Thursday.

As for the Los Angeles Rams’ injury report, there were several notable from offense on it. Offensive lineman Rob Havenstein (foot) was a late addition and didn’t practice Friday. Meanwhile, running back Darrell Henderson (thigh) and receiver Odell Beckham (hip) were limited on Friday. All three aforementioned players were ruled questionable on the final injury report and more can be found on their situations on the Rams Wire.

Jaguars Week 13 injury report: LB Damien Wilson upgraded to limited participation Thursday

The Jags had on change to the injury report as LB Damien Wilson seems to be trending in the right direction.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had just one change to their injury report Thursday and that change occurred for inside linebacker Damien Wilson. The veteran, who didn’t practice Wednesday with an ankle injury, was upgraded to limited participation on the team’s second injury report of the week.

Wilson’s change in status could be a good sign as he left Sunday’s game against Atlanta early and was questionable to return. As a result, he was one of six defensive starters on the initial injury report, but he at least seems to be trending in the right direction as the Jags prepare for a hungry Los Angeles Rams offense.

The status for the biggest notable on the injury report, Shaquill Griffin, remained unchanged as the veteran didn’t practice again due to a concussion he sustained Week 11 against San Francisco. He missed Sunday’s game against Atlanta as a result, and veteran Nevin Lawson started in his place.

Having Griffin back would be huge for the team (especially with his familiarity with the Rams), but if he can’t go, it would put the Jags in an iffy situation as the Rams have capable receivers like Odell Beckham and Van Jefferson on the perimeter.

As for the other starters to surface on the injury report, starting defensive lineman DaVon Hamilton (knee) and Malcom Brown (toe) missed their second consecutive days. Needless to say, being without both would be extremely concerning for the Jags’ defense and Friday could be a big day for both in terms of their chances to play.

As for linebacker Myles Jack, he’s surfaced on the injury report with a knee injury for several weeks now, but his situation isn’t as worrisome as he’s ended up playing each week despite missing dates before the final injury report.

Lastly, the other two notables worth mentioning on the injury report were cornerback Tyson Campbell and running back James Robinson. Both were limited for the second consecutive time this week, but they followed the same pattern last week. Ultimately, they both were full participants last Friday and they could end up with the same status this week, so neither player seems to be big concerns at the moment.

5 defensive players to watch in Jags’ preseason game vs. Saints

The Jags’ defense could put the NFL on notice Monday night with many around the nation watching. Here are some players on the unit to keep in mind when they take the field.

Week 2 of the NFL preseason is about to come to an end, but not before the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints take the field for a Monday night battle at Caesars Superdome. Both teams will not only be looking for their first preseason wins in the process, but looking to garner some momentum as regular season football is weeks away.

In their first preseason game against the Cleveland Browns, the Jags’ defense had both some positive and negative takeaways. The most notable one was their stoutness against the run, but at the same time, they struggled mightily against the screen game. The hope is that they will be able to clean that up against the Saints, who are a team with notable threats in the backfield.

From an individual standpoint there are also a variety of players Jags fans will be tuning in to see tonight as the unit has some gelling to do. Here are five players we think will be worth watching as the Jags will once again be taking a national stage this week.
