Alabama’s 2021 projected defensive depth chart

Roll Tide Wire takes a look into projecting the Alabama Crimson Tide’s defensive depth chart for the 2021 college football season.

We continue to work our way through the college football offseason, but spring practice is just around the corner. Alabama’s annual A-Day Game is tentatively set for April 17, so practices should start in a few weeks.

We wanted to go ahead and dive into a pre-spring depth chart for the Crimson Tide. First, it was the offensive side of the football, but now we shift focus towards the defense. It wasn’t as effective of a unit as the offense, but it returns a large majority of its starters.

Enjoy!

*Note: True freshmen are listed at the bottom of their respective position groups. Once we start to get an idea of where they could land on the depth chart in Year 1, we will make adjustments.

Up first … Defensive line

Alabama football very early projected defensive depth chart for 2021

Here is a really early projection for how Alabama football’s defensive depth chart could shake out in 2021. Can the Crimson Tide repeat?

The time to celebrate another national championship under Nick Saban has come and gone. Now, it’s time to shift the focus to the fall of 2021, especially if Alabama is going to make another title push.

We started with a projected depth chart for the offensive side of the football on Saturday. Now let’s turn to the defensive side. Alabama will suffer the loss of Dylan Moses, Patrick Surtain II, Christian Barmore and potentially LaBryan Ray and Ben Davis.

With that said, there is still a ton of talent coming back on defense, which could be crucial with so much roster turnover on the offensive side of the ball. Check it out below.

Iron Bowl Halftime: Alabama rolls over Auburn at the half

Alabama has an 18 point lead over the Auburn Tigers at the half. A handful of touchdowns by Mac Jones, and some stellar defense…

The Alabama Crimson Tide seem to have full control over Bo Nix and the Auburn Tigers, despite Nick Saban not being present.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has Alabama in a good position to finish out strong, as the contest’s first half comes to a close with a score of 21-3.

Mac Jones is having an amazing day, completing nine of 13 passing attempts for 174 yards and three touchdowns. All three passes to result in scores for Alabama were thrown to different receivers: DeVonta Smith, Malachi Moore and Jahleel Billingsley.

Najee Harris has been contained, only rushing five times for 25 yards, but has also seen a one reception for an additional 25 yards.

Pete Golding and the Crimson Tide defense have held Bo Nix to a very ineffective first half in the air, only allowing 12 completions for 96 yards and an interception to close out the half.

On the ground, Auburn has not had much luck, 20 total carries for 57 yards.

There’s still an entire half remaining in the game for Auburn to stage a comeback; however, the same argument could be made for Alabama to extend the lead, essentially ending the game far before the four quarters conclude.

The biggest star of the first half is true-freshman defensive back Malachi Moore, who has an interception and a handful of big-time plays to help Alabama on the defensive side of the ball.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on the 2020 Iron Bowl as the second half gets under way.

Alabama defensive back malachi moore gets his third turnover of the season, this one against Tennessee, and returns it for a TD.

Alabama’s true-freshman defensive back Malachi Moore gets turnover No. 3 on the season, and this one looked routine for the first-year player.

Moore strips the ball out of the carriers hand, watches it pop up in the air, follow it as it falls and bring it into his own arms. From there, a short, uncontested run into the end zone allowed Moore the ability to add six onto the board to add onto the Crimson Tide’s lead.

Nick Saban and Alabama look to improve to 5-0 on the season, and remain the only undefeated team in the SEC. A win would also give Saban consecutive win No. 23 over former assistant coaches, this time against Jeremy Pruitt.

Alabama leads 35-10 thanks to Moore’s defensive touchdown.

Alabama’s true freshman defensive back Malachi Moore’s interception led to amazing field position and a najee harris touchdown.

Alabama’s true-freshman defensive back Malachi Moore came up with an interception that may have given Alabama the momentum needed to take down the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs.

Stetson Bennett IV’s pass was deflected almost 15 yards away from the line of scimmage, the redirected pass was then intercepted by Moore at the two-yard line. The freshman retured the interception to the Alabama 44.

From there, Mac Jones and the offense took over. A quick trip to the redzone, courtesy of a 34-yard pass to DeVonta Smith, led to a pass interference call against Georgia in the end zone, and ultimately concluded with a two-yard touchdown rush by Najee Harris.

The Crimson Tide now leads the Bulldogs by 10, 24-34.

Malachi Moore named SEC Freshman of the Week

On Monday, Alabama defensive back Malachi Moore was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after Alabama’s 52-24 win over Texas A&M.

On Monday, Alabama defensive back Malachi Moore was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after Alabama’s 52-24 win over Texas A&M.

Moore had his second start of the season, and put on quite the show against the Aggies.

He was tied for third on the team with 6 tackles while leading the team with two pass breakups.

Moore also had an incredible interception that ended a red zone drive for the Aggies.

Simply put, Moore showed a new hope for the Alabama defense that has struggled the past few seasons.

So far this season, Moore has recorded 9 total tackles (6 solo) , 2 defended passes, and 1 interception.

National Signing Day has come and gone, and Alabama’s 2020 recruiting class is officially set. There were 25 total members (26, if you count North Carolina grad transfer tight end Carl Tucker) with talent across the board.

In order for fans to get to know the Crimson Tide’s newest players, we have laid out a “get to know them” article for each member.

Next up on the list is four-star safety Malachi Moore out of Hewitt-Trussville High School in Alabama.

Malachi Moore, Safety

Hometown: Trussville (Ala.)

High school: Hewitt-Trussville

Size: 6-0, 180

Early enrollee: No

247Sports composite ranking: 4-star / No. 209 overall / No. 19 S

247Sports ranking: 4-star / No. 157 overall / No. 13 S

Rivals ranking: 4-star / No. 231 overall / No. 21 S

ESPN ranking: 4-star / 81 overall grade / No. 23 CB

Commitment date: Aug. 13, 2018

Signing date: Dec. 18, 2019

Where does he fit in? Moore’s presence in the 2020 recruiting class is important considering the losses Alabama suffered in its secondary — . Shyheim Carter, Jared Mayden, Trevon Diggs and Xavier McKinney.

Like with Carter and Mayden, Moore is one of those players who could fill a variety of roles. The talented defensive back did have experience at both safety and cornerback for Hewitt-Trussville, after all.

More than likely, Moore will end up playing safety for the Crimson Tide. While his length (6-foot) lends itself nicely to what Alabama likes in its cornerbacks, the athleticism is more of a fit on the backend.

Of all the members of the secondary, Moore isn’t really talked about enough because there isn’t anything he does on an elite level — at least not yet. But with that said, he’s an effective player in a lot of different ways, and that balance should help him contribute at some point in his career.
