Receiver Malachi Coleman will enter transfer portal

Malachi Coleman intends to enter the transfer portal

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed wide receiver Malachi Coleman will enter the transfer portal following the season.

Coleman was redshirting this season after getting playing time in his freshman year. He caught eight passes for 139 yards and a touchdown last season. His best game of the 2023 campaign came against Northwestern. He caught a 44-yard pass for the touchdown.

Coleman was the 11th overall wide receiver in the 2023 class and the top player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Rankings. He committed to the program on December 21, 2022, and officially enrolled last April. Rhule elaborated on the wide receiver’s transfer, per The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman.

“I can’t say anything but great things about Malachi,” Rhule said. “We wish him the best. Great young man.”

Coleman released a statement on social media Monday afternoon.

The transfer portal officially opens on Monday, December 9, and closes Thursday, December 28. Roster cutdowns are going to lead to difficult decisions being made, with the new 105-man limit being a factor.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule gives injury update on Malachi Coleman

Malachi Coleman burst onto the scene as a freshman last year.

Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule held a press conference Monday, as the team prepares to take on UTEP in the season opener. He gave updates on several players, including wide receiver Malachi Coleman.

Coleman played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2023, making six starts. He tallied eight catches for 139 yards and one touchdown. The touchdown itself came in Nebraska’s win against Northwestern last October.

Coleman came to Lincoln with a ton of hype, ranking as the top recruit in the state of Nebraska for the 2022 class.

The wide receiver has battled injuries throughout the course of his Nebraska career, and it seems as though that is the case heading into Saturday’s game. Rhule expanded on this a bit more.

“Malachi is healthy. He had a groin, so he’s just a little bit further down on the depth chart right now.”

The Huskers currently have the wide receiver depth to withstand injuries to guys like Coleman. Currently, Coleman is at the bottom of the depth chart behind Jaylen LIoyd and Jahmal Banks. This affords him the opportunity to ease back into things, with his groin injury almost behind him.

Wide receiver Malachi Coleman impressing coaches

Malachi Coleman was one of the top prospects for Nebraska in the class of 2023.

Nebraska football wide receivers coach Garrett McGuire had a positive review on wide receiver Malachi Coleman‘s progress earlier this week, as reported by Husker 247’s Brian Christopherson.

Coleman has had a quieter spring, as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury that plagued him throughout the year. He recorded eight catches for 138 yards and a touchdown last season, averaging 17.4 yards per catch. His best game came against Northwestern last October when he caught a 44-yard touchdown pass.

Now, he wants to become an established contributor in a wide receiver room. Coleman came to Nebraska with high expectations and is looking to bounce back from his injury.

As he noted earlier this week, McGuire has been impressed with Coleman’s work on the field.

“Still want him to trend in the right direction as far as gaining weight and getting back to a heavier playing weight but he’s doing a really good job. You see his physicality transitioning into his route running, which I think is super impressive. You’re talking about a big guy, you can win at the top of route being physical. So that’s been really exciting with him.”

Coleman has all the makings to be a top-tier wide receiver. His health will perhaps be his biggest obstacle. Nevertheless, his talent and potential should make Nebraska football fans feel optimistic,

Husker football pulls away in 17-9 win over Northwestern

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown.

The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium saw a wild showdown. In the first few minutes of the game, Nebraska found itself in a disastrous position against Northwestern. The Huskers’ two first drives resulted in two straight interceptions, giving the Wildcats prime field position. But Nebraska stepped up and fended off Northwestern when it counted, resulting in a 17-9 2023 win.

Heinrich Haarberg stumbled out of the gate with the two interceptions. But he went the rest of the game without any costly errors. Haarberg threw eight completions off 17 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, he ran for 72 yards and a touchdown off 16 rushes. Emmett Johnson led the Huskers in rushing yards in the win, going for 73 yards off 12 carries.

Though Northwestern finished with more total offensive yards than Nebraska, the Huskers’ defense kept the Wildcats to just nine points. The Blackshirts brought the pressure, delivering eight total sacks in the game.

But the Huskers also struggled to put points on the board. However, each time Nebraska scored, it was big. Haarberg’s rushing touchdown handed the Huskers the lead and his 44-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Coleman extended that lead to 17-6.

With the win, Nebraska moves to 4-3. The last time the Huskers got to four wins before the last game of the season was in 2019, when they defeated Northwestern 13-10 to move to 4-2. Nebraska will remain at home next Saturday against Purdue. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and can be viewed on FS1.

Top five true freshman wide receivers in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman wide receivers in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks #B1G

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year and is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed that the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle, and we already dove into the top quarterbacks and top running backs of the class, but now we will take a look at the top wide receivers in the class of 2023.

The following are the top five wide receiver recruits ranked by 247Sports heading to Big Ten schools this fall.

Friday Night Notes: Malachi Coleman gives back, K.J. Bolden’s recruiting tour and more

Coleman will be donating his NIL money to the foster system.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

The advent of NIL money becoming available to college and high school players have brought on a surge of ugly commentary and negative generalizations about young athletes. Some are painted as selfish, greedy, poorly-behaved, and only interested in where they can make the most money – as if there’s something wrong with an athlete wanting to maximize their earnings – especially in a sport as dangerous and violent as football.

Sadly, some of the most famous people in the industry reinforce aspects of these negative stereotypes. Deion Sanders’ unfortunate recent comments about only wanting recruits coming from two-parent households are only one of the countless bad examples.

Often these stereotypes fly in the face of the evidence. Many of these young players are exceptionally unselfish and do a lot to give back to their communities. One superb example is that of Lincoln East (Neb.) four-star Athlete Malachi Coleman, who signed with Nebraska just before Christmas after briefly re-opening his recruitment.

Before his current family adopted him, Coleman suffered abuse as a foster child when he was growing up. Now he’s doing what he can to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else. Coleman will be donating his NIL money to the foster system.

Top in-state recruit Malachi Coleman decommits from Nebraska

Lincoln (Neb.) four-star Athlete Malachi Coleman announces he’s decommited from Nebraska football.

One of the top multi-position athletes in the class of 2023 just changed his mind about where he’ll be playing his college ball.

Lincoln East (Neb.) four-star Athlete Malachi Coleman announced today that he’s decommitted from Nebraska. He sent a statement to On3, citing the recent changes to the Cornhuskers’ coaching staff, and also posted to his twitter account.

Coleman (6-foot-5, 205 pounds) is ranked No. 5 at his position and first overall in the state of Nebraska.

Wherever he goes, they’ll be getting a truly versatile playmaker – as Coleman can fill out the stat sheet in all three phases. As a Junior, he posted 17 catches, 561 receiving yards (33.0 per catch) and scored 10 touchdowns, plus 7.5 sacks and 125 kickoff return yards.

Where he commits to now is anybody’s guess, but Coleman does have offers from 26 other programs, including Georgia, Florida State, Iowa, Michigan and Oregon.

4-star Malachi Coleman, No. 4 ATH in 2023, decommits from Nebraska

Malachi Coleman, the No. 68 player in the 2023 class, is back on the market. He had Oregon in his top 7 before committing to Nebraska.

One of the main storylines to keep an eye on in college football over the next couple of weeks is certain players decommitting and opening up their recruitment ahead of early signing day.

Sometimes it will be because of other offers, sometimes it will be because of a new coaching staff that was hired, one in which they didn’t have the connection with in their recruitment.

For 4-star athlete Malachi Coleman, that may be the case. Coleman, the No. 4 ATH in the 2023 class and No. 68 overall player in the nation, committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers back in October of this year. However, Nebraska has since undergone a coaching change and brought in Matt Rhule to lead things.

Coleman announced his de-commitment on Thursday.

For the Oregon Ducks, this is something to pay attention to. They were originally once of the teams after this elite athlete and landed in his top 7 before Coleman committed to Nebraska.

Does that mean that they will land him again? Not for sure, but you can guess that Dan Lanning is at the very least going to be checking back in.

Nebraska commits react to the hiring of Matt Rhule

The Nebraska Cornhuskers hired former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. Some of Nebraska’s commits reacted to the news.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers have found their new head coach. After a lengthy process, they have hired former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. Rhule enjoyed great success as a collegiate head coach at both Baylor and Temple.

In 2013, Temple had a 2-10 record in Rhule’s first season. He quickly turned the program around, and they won 10 games in 2015 and made it to the Boca Raton Bowl.

In 2017, Rhule became the head coach at Baylor, and his tenure followed a similar pattern. They had an abysmal 1-11 record in his first season. In 2019, the Bears went 11-3 and made it to the Sugar Bowl.

Some of Nebraska’s 2023 commits reacted the hiring. Let’s take a quick look.
