Georgia Bulldogs 5-star K.J. Bolden on picking Florida, a $3 million NIL offer from another school and All-American Bowl practice

K.J. Bolden on why he picked Georgia.

After a recruitment that took twists and turns down the stretch, K.J. Bolden decided to stay in-state and flip to Georgia. The decision to commit to Georgia was made, he said, despite a huge NIL offer from another program that was recruiting him prior to the early signing period.

An offer that has been reported at $3 million annually.

A five-star safety for Buford (Buford, Georgia), Bolden is a consensus top-five player in the nation. Committed to Florida State since this past August, he flipped to Georgia on the first day of the early signing period in December. Bolden is set to play this Saturday at the All-American Bowl at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas (1:00 PM ET, NBC).

He signed with Georgia, despite the offer from another program that would have netted him multi-million dollars had he flipped.

“This school just mentioned all the bread they had,” Bolden told USA TODAY High School Sports on Wednesday following practice for the All-American Bowl.

“It wasn’t one of those top schools. It was definitely a good school, a good program. But it was just crazy how they just threw that out like ‘Hey, man, like, I know some quarterbacks who aren’t getting that so you are telling me I’m getting that? ‘ That’s crazy.”

The school and the reported $3 million offer did give Bolden some pause. The standout safety wisely won’t reveal the name of the school.

He did say that the offer came in three weeks before he signed for Georgia.

“I mean, at first when you first hear you’re gonna be like, ‘Oh, that’s a lot of money.’ And then you got to think about like, ‘Alright, cool, does this place fit me? Like how do I like being up there?’ But you got to think about the other stuff,” Bolden said.

“(There were) a couple of schools that had me down to the wire but to me, it was just about being where you feel the most comfortable. The money is good to have because the money is good. But at the end of the day, it’s short-term money. The big money is in the NFL.”

At the time of his decision, his final three schools were  “Auburn, Florida State and Georgia.”

Georgia in the end won out, flipping Bolden. He said that the relationship built with head coach Kirby Smart helped land him in-state.

“Just being from Georgia, being 30 minutes from Athens. Coach Kirby, he came and talked with my family,” Bolden said.

“The home visit went great. I feel like that’s what did it. He just came out there and interacted with my mom in the home visit, my dad – was so good. I feel like that’s what did it for sure.”

Saying that “iron definitely sharpens iron,” Bolden said that the week of practice leading up to Saturday’s All-American Bowl has pushed him. The bowl game has a loaded roster and will feature a traditional East-West format this year.

“It’s been a great experience just can’t get coached by the best. The best…and (been) going against the best this week,” Bolden said.

“So it’s really a great experience. I was every kid, every football player could experience experience (this) because it’s just great. It’s just a great – great vibes.”

Alumni of the All-American Bowl, first played in 1996, includes the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Brock Bowers, Sharrif Floyd, Andrew Luck, Nick Mangold, DeMarco Murray, Adrian Peterson, Tim Tebow, Joe Thomas and Chase Young among others.

K.J. Bolden details why he flipped from Florida State to Georgia

K.J. Bolden details why he committed to Georgia over Florida State.

The first day of the early signing period was filled with plenty of intrigue and more flips than the dolphin show at SeaWorld. Among those flips was K.J. Bolden, who de-committed from Florida State to sign with Georgia.

Bolden, a five-star athlete, is coming off a sensational senior season for Buford High School (Buford, Georgia). Capable of playing as a safety or a wide receiver at the next level, Bolden is a unique athlete who tests off the charts in terms of his metrics.

He had an impressive 30 catches for 663 yards and 14 touchdowns this fall for Buford. Bolden is a consensus five-star recruit and the top safety in the country.

He told Georgia recruiting insider Jeff Sentell that his decision to flip to Georgia from Florida State came down to his goal of being in the NFL.

“My decision came down to just the place I felt like could get me to the ultimate goal of playing in the NFL. It’s not about NIL, the facilities,” Bolden said following his signing announcement.

“It’s about relationships, development. I prayed with my family…I’m going to start my future off by staying home.”

There is lots of good stuff on Sentell’s timeline about Bolden, including some analysis of the player as a prospect.

Bolden’s teammate at Buford, five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola, did a recent flip himself. Following a weekend official visit to Nebraska, Raiola flipped to the Cornhuskers after being a Georgia commit.

Watch: Georgia commit Dylan Raiola throws a dime to five-star K.J. Bolden

Dylan Raiola throws a beauty for Buford on Friday night.

Georgia football commit Dylan Raiola, a five-star recruit, threw an absolutely picturesque bomb to fellow five-star K.J. Bolden on Friday night.

Given that each of the two players involved are five-star recruits, does this make it a 10-star play?

Coming into this weekend, Raiola was 118-of-195, completing 61 percent of his passes for 2,042 yards and 22 touchdowns through nine games. He has no interceptions on the season.

Raiola and Bolden, a Florida State commit, made this 46-yard connection look easy. With just a little step up in the pocket and a snap of the wrist, a flick even, Raiola puts the ball out there for Bolden.

Without adjusting or breaking his stride, Bolden makes it six points for Buford (Buford, Georgia). Buford rolled to a 63-0 win over Gwinnett Central (Lawrenceville, Georgia).

Also, can we add that it is a nice, clean pocket to throw from for Raiola? There was also a very nice blocking pick-up from junior running back Justin Baker on the player to keep Raiola clean.

Raiola is the No. 1 recruit in the nation according to Rivals. Three recruiting services (247Sports, ESPN and Rivals) rank him as a five-star prospect.

Those three services also rank him as the top quarterback recruit in the nation.

Ohio State football misses out on KJ Bolden to somewhat surprising school

Coffee is for closers and the Ohio State coaches are thirsty on Saturday night #GoBucks

It has been a reoccurring theme with [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and high-end prospects over the last two cycles, where the Buckeyes miss out on their guy.

It happened once again on Saturday night, as 2024 Georgia 5-star safety [autotag]KJ Bolden[/autotag] opted to stay in the South and commit to the Florida State Seminoles. This recruitment stings for multiple reasons, one of them being the fact that the safety’s uncle, [autotag]Perry Eliano[/autotag], is Ohio State’s coach at that position.

If family ties aren’t enough to pull the 6-foot, 1-inch, 185-pound star, then it really wasn’t meant to be. Bolden, who is viewed as the No. 1 safety and 7th overall player in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, has been a priority recruit for Ohio State.

The current 2024 Buckeye class has just two other safety commits, Garrett Stover and Jaylen McClain, but the former could end up playing linebacker as well.

Friday Night Notes: Malachi Coleman gives back, K.J. Bolden’s recruiting tour and more

Coleman will be donating his NIL money to the foster system.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

The advent of NIL money becoming available to college and high school players have brought on a surge of ugly commentary and negative generalizations about young athletes. Some are painted as selfish, greedy, poorly-behaved, and only interested in where they can make the most money – as if there’s something wrong with an athlete wanting to maximize their earnings – especially in a sport as dangerous and violent as football.

Sadly, some of the most famous people in the industry reinforce aspects of these negative stereotypes. Deion Sanders’ unfortunate recent comments about only wanting recruits coming from two-parent households are only one of the countless bad examples.

Often these stereotypes fly in the face of the evidence. Many of these young players are exceptionally unselfish and do a lot to give back to their communities. One superb example is that of Lincoln East (Neb.) four-star Athlete Malachi Coleman, who signed with Nebraska just before Christmas after briefly re-opening his recruitment.

Before his current family adopted him, Coleman suffered abuse as a foster child when he was growing up. Now he’s doing what he can to make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else. Coleman will be donating his NIL money to the foster system.

Here’s the full story from CBS Evening News that Coleman shared on Twitter:

Every 5-Star player offered by the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2024 Recruiting Cycle

Every 5-star player the Oklahoma Sooners have offered in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

The initial transfer period for 2023 has closed and 2023 national signing day is coming up. With 25 signees on board for the Oklahoma Sooners, it’s likely they’re done for 2023. Now the 2024 recruiting cycle takes center stage and becomes the priority for Brent Venables and his staff.

After putting together the No. 8 class in 2022 in less than two months and the No. 5 class in their first full year on the trail with the Sooners, Oklahoma will no doubt put together another top 5-10 class once again.

The first name that appears to be trending toward a commitment is four-star quarterback [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag]. He has a chance to see an upswing in his recruiting profile over the next year, and if the Sooners can get him on board when he commits at the end of January, it could lead to several more key dominoes to fall.

The Sooners have offered 21 of the 27 five-star prospects in the 247Sports composite rankings. 13 of those players are on the defensive side of the ball. Two are listed as Athletes, which for Brent Venables typically means they’ll likely be defensive players if the 2023 class is any indication. Three of those five-star offers are wide receivers, two are quarterbacks, and one is a tight end.

Of the 13 players listed strictly as defenders, eight play along the defensive front, three play cornerback, one plays safety, and one plays linebacker.

Oklahoma appears to be in good standing with [autotag]K.J. Bolden[/autotag], [autotag]David Stone[/autotag], and [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag]. They’ll have work to do to earn their commitments, but they’re in the ball game. As for the others, as we saw with Peyton Bowen, nothing’s final till it’s final. A commitment today could change by the early signing period or national signing day.

Here’s a look at each of the five-star prospects to receive an [autotag]offer[/autotag] from the Oklahoma Sooners.

Oklahoma Sooners included in top 15 for 2024 5-Star prospect K.J. Bolden

The Oklahoma Sooners were included in the top 15 for 5-Star athlete KJ Bolden out of Georgia.

When Brent Venables came to the Oklahoma Sooners from the Clemson Tigers, he brought with him the ability to go deep into the southeast and recruit with the top programs in the SEC and the ACC.

And that’s where the Oklahoma Sooners find themselves, in the running for one of the best players in the 2024 recruiting class, K.J. Bolden. Bolden is a five-star athlete in the 2024 cycle who projects to play safety at the collegiate level. According to 247Sports and ESPN, Bolden is a top-five player in 2024 and is the consensus No. 1 safety in the class.

A two-way player for Buford High School, Bolden displays elite speed and agility. He’s a player that could probably play wide receiver for a number of Power Five schools, he’s that dynamic with the ball in his hands. As a safety, he’s a physical player, showing toughness in run support. He plays fast in all three phases and is dynamic as a kick returner.

The Buford, Ga. native is favored to land with the in-state Georgia Bulldogs at the moment, but we’re a long way from the early signing period or national signing day, and we’ve seen this staff pull off the improbable before. Along with Oklahoma and Georgia, the top 15 includes Alabama, Clemson, Colorado, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, and USC.

Venables was recruiting Bolden when Oklahoma’s head coach was still with the Clemson Tigers. The five-star safety was an unofficial visitor in the fall of 2021.

5-star, nation’s top-ranked athlete gives the latest on recruitment, Clemson

There continues to be considerable mutual interest between Clemson and the nation’s top-ranked athlete in the 2024 class.

Buford (Ga.) High School five-star Khalil “KJ” Bolden recently spoke with The Clemson Insider regarding the latest in his recruitment, where things stand with the Tigers and more.

“Everything’s been going straight,” he said of the recruiting process. “I’m picking up offers constantly, daily. Me and my family have been talking. We plan on narrowing things down junior year to like 12 or something like that, and then just keep going on from there.”

Clemson would be a big contender for Bolden, who has collected 30-plus offers, if the Tigers extend an offer to him once they start offering more prospects in the 2024 class this summer.

“Clemson’s always been one of my favorite schools since I was little,” he said. “But Clemson does things different when it comes to offering and things like that. But definitely if I get the offer, they’ll definitely be one of my top schools I’ll have to go see and check out and things like that.”

Bolden has been communicating with Clemson co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn, as well as wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham.

“I hear from Coach Conn and Coach Grisham every once in a while. Those are my guys,” he said.

“They both say the same thing – like, we want you, we think you can play for this university and we’re not going to force you… like, it doesn’t matter what side you choose, either safety or receiver, and things of that nature.”

According to Bolden, Clemson is leaving it up to him as far as whether he would play safety or receiver should he choose to suit up for the Tigers in college.

The 6-foot-1, 182-pound rising junior expects to be doing plenty of pass-catching for Buford this season and then will go from there as he determines which position he’d prefer to play at the next level.

“This year, I’m going to be playing a lot of receiver because we had an Alabama commit (Isaiah Bond),” Bolden said. “He was playing mostly receiver, but this year I’ve got to step up and take over that spot. So, after this year, I plan on seeing what I want to do and how I want to go from there.”

Bolden is a five-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite, while 247Sports ranks him as the nation’s No. 1 athlete and No. 3 overall prospect in the country for the 2024 class regardless of position.

“I’m a true definition of an athlete,” he said, describing himself as a player, “because I can hurt you both with speed or strength. I’m a ballhawk. It doesn’t matter, offense or defense, wherever the ball is, I’m trying to get it. I just try to play fast and just be a leader for the team and things like that. I’m really big on leadership.”

Bolden estimates he’s been to Clemson two or three times and explained what stood out to him from those visits to campus and the time he spent around Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ staff.

“They’re all like family. They’re big on what they do,” he said. “They never change things up. Coach Dabo, he was nice. He gets after it. I like things like that, coaches like that, and it’s just more than football to them. They like to talk about life and other things beyond football, and schools like that, that’s really big to me.”

Bolden’s mother, who hails from the Palmetto State, is a big fan of Clemson as well.

“She loves it,” he said. “My mom is from South Carolina, so she told me she wouldn’t mind me going back to her hometown and things like that. So, that’s going to be one of her top schools.”

Bolden plans to visit Clemson with his mom again this summer if the Tigers pull the trigger on an offer.

“Hopefully I get the offer June 1 so I can come back down there,” he said. “My mom really wants to go back down there. So, hopefully I’ll get it June 1, and then we’ll go on another visit around June, July.”

Bolden said he is looking to visit schools such as Texas A&M, LSU, Florida State, USC and Penn State moving forward.

As it stands now, several schools are locks to make the cut for Bolden when he narrows things down and drops his top-schools list during his junior year.

“Georgia’s definitely going to make it, Alabama, Ole Miss, Ohio State,” he said. “Those are the schools right now, for now. … And if Clemson offers, I’ll definitely mention them.”

It’s time for this week’s edition of The Insider Report.

We hope everyone had a great weekend.

Austin staying in touch with fast-rising Virginia OL

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Tuscarora (Leesburg, Va.) three-star offensive lineman Fletcher Westphal, who has been keeping in touch with Clemson offensive line coach Thomas Austin since he visited in March.

“I’ve just been catching up since my last visit there to Clemson,” Westphal said. “Just been talking about how school is going, how spring ball’s going. I know he’s supposed to come for a spring practice sometime (this month). We’ve been talking a little bit.”

The fact that Clemson is stopping by his school during the evaluation period proves to Westphal that the Tigers are definitely interested in him going forward.

“I know Clemson — they pick who they want to offer — they don’t offer a lot of people,” he said. “I know that once you’re on their radar and that’s a good thing. I just hope that he can come out and see and build more of a relationship with him.”

Westphal’s recruitment has skyrocketed. He went from having seven offers to 16 in the span of just two months. He currently holds offers from schools like Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

“It would definitely be an honor,” Westphal said regarding a potential offer from Clemson. “My family does a lot of research on these colleges…you search up academics, what they’re ranked at as a public school, private school, what their reputation is? Our family wasn’t super big into college football before, so we didn’t know a lot of this stuff. Clemson, I mean, they’re definitely up there.”

Westphal (6-8, 320) currently ranks as the No. 14 offensive tackle and the nation’s No. 247 prospect in the 2023 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Update on a priority OL target

One of Clemson’s top offensive lineman targets in the class of 2023 dropped his top-10 schools on May 2 via social media.

Vandegrift High School (Austin, Texas) four-star Ian Reed is down to Clemson, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.

Reed — a 6-foot-6, 305-pound junior — earned an offer from Clemson when he was on campus for the program’s Orange & White Spring Game on April 9.

“Clemson I just felt really comfortable with taking an (official visit),” Reed said. “I felt really comfortable when I first went there and seeing what Clemson has to offer when I first went there was pretty cool. I just want to go back there and (continue to) build a relationship with them.”

Reed set up an official visit for the weekend of June 3-5. He’s hoping that his next visit confirms how he feels about the school.

Since Clemson offered Reed, the Tigers have reinforced to him that he’s a priority in this recruiting class. He has since been in contact with Austin at least once a week, as they continue to build a strong relationship.

Sunshine State signal-caller drawing Clemson interest

Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville, Fla.) 2024 QB James Resar is drawing interest from Clemson. In fact, Clemson offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter stopped by his high school this past week.

“I went to camp last year and I hadn’t really heard anything else and then Coach Streeter watched me make a couple of throws at practice,” Resar said. “He said that I looked good.”

What does that mean to Resar?

“I feel like they’re showing interest,” he said. “I know they’d like to see a little bit more because they like to see their quarterbacks a lot before they offer interest.”

He currently has offers from Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, but a lot of schools currently showing interest in him want to see him throw before they pull the trigger on any offer.

Right now, Resar is unsure if he’ll be able to camp at Clemson again this summer. He, unfortunately, has finals when the Tigers host their camps on June 1 and 2. He’ll look into doing any of the camps from June 10-12, but nothing is set in stone.

Latest on the nation’s top-ranked athlete

TCI recently caught up with a five-star recruit ranked as the nation’s top athlete in the 2024 class and one of the top prospects in his class regardless of position.

Buford (Ga.) High School’s Khalil “KJ” Bolden spoke with TCI regarding the latest in his recruitment, where things stand with Clemson at this point in the process and more.

“Everything’s been going straight,” he said of the recruiting process. “I’m picking up offers constantly, daily. Me and my family have been talking. We just plan on narrowing things down junior year to like 12 or something like that, and then just keep going on from there.”

Bolden, the No. 1 athlete in the 2024 class per 247Sports, said he hears from Clemson co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn and receivers coach Tyler Grisham every now and then and added “those are my guys.”

According to Bolden, Conn and Grisham are telling the 6-foot-1, 182-pound rising junior that the Tigers want him, they think he can play for them, and they’re leaving it open for him as to whether he would play safety or receiver if he chose to go to Clemson.

Bolden expects to play a lot of receiver during his junior season, as Buford had an Alabama commitment – Isaiah Bond – who played mostly receiver last season and Bolden believes he has to step up and take over that spot. But after this season, Bolden said, he plans on trying to figure out which position he would prefer to play at the next level.

Bolden estimates he’s been to Clemson two or three times and said, “Clemson’s always been one of my favorite schools since I was little,” and that the Tigers would definitely be one of his top schools if they join his list of 30-plus offers.

“They’re all like family. They’re big on what they do,” Bolden said of his interest in Clemson. “They never change things up. Coach Dabo, he was nice. He gets after it. I like things like that, coaches like that, and it’s just more than football to them. They like to talk about life and other things beyond football, and schools like that, that’s really big to me.”

Bolden said his mother also “loves” Clemson. She’s from South Carolina, and Bolden said she really wants to get back to Clemson and that they’ll return this summer should he receive an offer.

Bolden said he’s looking to visit schools such as Texas A&M, LSU, Florida State, USC and Penn State moving forward. He named Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss and Ohio State as schools that as of now, he definitely anticipates making his top schools list when he releases it – along with Clemson, if it pulls the trigger on an offer.

In addition to being the No. 1 athlete in the 2024 class, Bolden ranks as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2024 class regardless of position according to 247Sports. He is a five-star prospect per the 247Sports Composite.

Tar Heel State running back on Spiller’s radar, looks up to Shipley

This talented running back prospect in the 2024 class is receiving plenty of early interest from Clemson and running backs coach C.J. Spiller.

Charlotte Christian School (Charlotte, N.C.)’s Ryan Henley told TCI that Clemson is showing the most interest in him right now and that he caught Spiller’s eye at the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer.

“I went to a camp last year after freshman year, and Coach Spiller just really liked what he saw,” Henley said. “He ended up taking me and my mom on a tour of the whole facility, just the three of us after. He really liked what I was doing out there, like my versatility and my ability to make things happen in the receiving game. I think that’s really what made me stand out from some of the other running backs there, was just the versatility that I have and my ability to run the whole route tree.”

Henley (5-10, 184) also visited Clemson for the Florida State game last season, and Spiller wants him to camp at Clemson again this summer, so he plans to do so June 2.

Henley looks up to fellow Charlotte-area native and Clemson rising sophomore running back Will Shipley and has trained with Shipley several times.

“Going into freshman year, I trained with Will,” Henley said. “I’ve trained with him multiple times. He’s been a great role model for me to try and model my game. He’s offered a lot of knowledge that’s just rare to come by. He’s extremely successful at what he does, highly ranked guy. But I think he’s so humble with it all and he’s able to keep the main thing the main thing. I like seeing what he does, and the way that he treats my parents with respect. He’s such a high-level player, he doesn’t really have to do that, so my level of respect for him is extremely high.”

Henley hopes to stand out at the Swinney Camp again this summer and said he’d “love to be able to suit up for Clemson one day” and have the chance to follow in Shipley’s footsteps as a running back for the Tigers.

5-star, Nation’s No. 1 athlete will be at Clemson this weekend

Clemson is set to play host to one of the nation’s best prospects in the class of 2024 this weekend. The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Buford (Ga.) High School five-star athlete K.J. Bolden, who will be on campus this Saturday, March 12, …

Clemson is set to play host to one of the nation’s best prospects in the class of 2024 this weekend.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with Buford (Ga.) High School five-star athlete K.J. Bolden, who will be on campus this Saturday, March 12, and he confirmed that via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

Bolden (6-0, 180) currently ranks as the nation’s No. 1 athlete and No. 9 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“Last time I spoke with Coach (Tyler) Grisham, the receivers coach,” Bolden told TCI this past week. “He was just telling me about the culture and how Clemson doesn’t just offer anyone and how we have to wait until June 1 of our junior year for when they offer juniors.”

How does Bolden feel about that?

“At first, I was frustrated, because Clemson has always been my favorite school that I wanted an offer from,” he said. “But when I hit my sophomore year, it made me realize that they just want to get to know you and I like coaches like that, who want to get to know you before they bring you onto your team. That’s really big to me.”

While Grisham has recently been in contact with Bolden, the Tigers have left it up to Bolden to determine what position he’ll play at the next level. He’s not leaning way or another, rather he’d like to see how the next two years of his high school career go.

What is Bolden hoping to get out of his visit?

“I just want to go down there and know those coaches more, build a better relationship than we already have,” he said.

In addition to Clemson, Bolden is planning to visit Ohio State, Ole Miss, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan State and Penn State.

He indicated that these upcoming visits are going to be very important for him. By the time his junior year rolls around, Bolden wants to narrow down his recruitment to 8-10 schools.

This weekend will certainly be a determining factor in whether Clemson is one of those schools going forward.

“I feel like the program’s performance is great still,” Bolden said. “Coach Dabo (Swinney) knows what he’s doing. He’s got a couple of good guys coming on this year. Hopefully, they have a good season this year.”
