Former LSU edge rusher commits to UNLV

Zavier Carter is heading out west after two seasons in Baton Rouge.

Former LSU outside linebacker [autotag]Zavier Carter[/autotag] has found a new home. On Monday, Carter announced that he would be transferring to UNLV to join newly hired coach [autotag]Barry Odom[/autotag], previously Arkansas‘ defensive coordinator and the head coach at Missouri.

A former four-star prospect out of Atlanta in the 2021 class, Carter appeared in 18 games over two seasons as a rotational player. He finished his LSU career with nine total tackles (one for loss), a sack and a forced fumble.

Carter’s decision to enter the portal came as a bit of a surprise. With the Tigers losing both [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] and [autotag]Ali Gaye[/autotag] to the NFL draft, he had a path to see significant reps in 2023 if not start.

Anonymous coaches name LSU a transfer portal winner so far

The Tigers currently have the best transfer class in the country, according to 247Sports.

There’s no denying the transfer portal has been key to Brian Kelly’s strategy at LSU.

The Tigers coach inherited a depleted roster when he took the job just over a year ago, and a 10-win, SEC West championship season in 2022 would not have been possible were it not for the impactful additions through the portal. With many of those transfers being veterans who are now moving on, LSU had to hit the portal again this offseason, albeit in a less desperate situation.

Once again, the transfer portal has treated Kelly well. He’s brought in a group of immediate impact players at positions of need, especially at linebacker and in the secondary, and LSU’s transfer class ranks as the best in college football, per 247Sports.

Sometimes industry folks can overrate or underrate certain players, so it can be best to hear things directly from the mouths of those who are more directly involved. ESPN discussed which teams are winning the portal so far with several anonymous coaches, and LSU unsurprisingly came up. However, one SEC coordinator did question how sustainable Kelly’s roster strategy is.

LSU always will be one of the best-positioned programs for top high school players, especially from within the state. But the team had roster issues during its recent coaching transition, and it hit the portal for quarterback Jayden Daniels (Arizona State), defensive lineman Mekhi Wingo (Missouri), cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse (Oklahoma State) and others. The roster is in better shape now, and LSU signed ESPN’s No. 7 recruiting class but also kept mining the portal.

Top additions include linebacker Omar Speights, who earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors at Oregon State in 2022, as well as defensive backs Duce Chestnut (Syracuse), Denver Harris (Texas A&M) and JK Johnson (Ohio State). LSU also bolstered its defensive front with Ovie Oghoufo (Texas), Jordan Jefferson (West Virginia) and Jalen Lee (Florida).

“That might not be what Brian Kelly wants to do, but last year, they were depleted and they took a bunch of kids out of the portal,” an SEC coordinator said. “This year, they’re taking a ton of kids out of the portal. It’s kind of one of those never-ending cycles, where once you do, you’ve got to keep doing it to replenish. LSU might be a little bit different, where you can get some blue chips that can help you right away, but it’s hard.”

There’s a lot to like about the Tigers’ transfer class. Speights has been one of the top linebackers in college football over the last few seasons, and that should continue in Baton Rouge. Additions like Chestnut and Harris should give the secondary plenty of talent, while LSU added a lot of depth on the defensive line.

Relying so much on the portal may not be ideal, but it has also allowed Kelly to turn things around at LSU much quicker than many expected. With this transfer haul, he’s set to have a competitive team in the SEC West once again.

LSU an obvious winner from the first transfer portal window

The Tigers’ transfer haul currently ranks third nationally.

Every coach is learning on the fly to an extent when it comes to the new reality brought upon by the transfer portal, but [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is adjusting better than most.

He landed one of the nation’s best transfer classes last offseason, and after reaching 10 wins with that group, he’s using the portal to retool once again. LSU once again aggressively went after help in the secondary, landing four game-ready corners, and the Tigers also landed former five-star Alabama receiver [autotag]Aaron Anderson[/autotag] in addition to Oregon State linebacker [autotag]Omar Speights[/autotag], a First Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2022.

With those additions, LSU boasts the No. 3 transfer portal class in the country, per the 247Sports transfer rankings, and 247 named the Tigers one of the winners from the initial window.

The Tigers have gone heavy in the transfer portal for the second season in a row. And while they’ve had nice additions outside of the secondary, I really want to zero in on the team’s cornerback takes. LSU didn’t just land one impact corner. The Tigers brought in FOUR. Here’s the breakdown:

Denver Harris – No. 3 overall prospect, No. 2 cornerback
Zy Alexander – No. 16 overall prospect, No. 4 cornerback
Duce Chestnut – No. 63 overall prospect, No. 8 cornerback
JK Johnson – Transfer portal rating of 91

LSU had to be aggressive in the portal last year fixing its cornerback room after several notable departures. This class did much the same, only it added future depth as well. There are plug-and-play experienced players, like Chestnut and Alexander, with young, talented pieces like Harris and Johnson also coming over with multiple remaining years of eligibility.

Note: The article from 247Sports was written prior to Speights’ addition on Thursday.

The Tigers have proven they can be successful with transfer additions, and with a number of veterans moving on, this team will look to transfers to make a major impact once again.

Former LSU, Georgia tight end Arik Gilbert announces next step

Gilbert is heading to Nebraska after two seasons with the Bulldogs.

A player’s path through college football is seldom direct, especially in the era of the transfer portal. Perhaps no better player in the sport right now represents this better than [autotag]Arik Gilbert[/autotag].

The former LSU and Georgia tight end is moving on to his third school as Gilbert announced on Friday that he’ll be heading to Nebraska to join new head coach Matt Rhule. Gilbert appeared in three games for the Bulldogs this fall, totaling two catches for 16 yards and a touchdown, all of which came against Vanderbilt.

A former five-star recruit and top-five overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, Gilbert had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman at LSU. After that season, he transferred to Florida briefly before changing his mind and joining the Bulldogs.

Gilbert didn’t play at all in 2021 after missing fall camp due to personal reasons, and coach Kirby Smart said during his prolonged absence in 2022 that he was dealing with off-field issues.

A rare talent at the tight end position, Gilbert’s career hasn’t gone as planned so far. He’ll hope the change of scenery helps with the second act of his career. He will have up to three remaining years of eligibility with the Cornhuskers.

Tigers land massive commitment from top transfer portal linebacker

With the addition of Omar Speights, LSU has the No. 1 transfer class in the country.

LSU’s transfer portal haul this spring just keeps getting better.

On Thursday, the Tigers picked up a monumental commitment through the portal from former Oregon State linebacker [autotag]Omar Speights[/autotag]. A First Team All-Pac-12 selection in 2022, Speights led the Beavers with 83 tackles.

He finishes his career in Corvallis with 308 tackles (25 for loss), five sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. The Philadelphia native has been a full-time starter for the last three seasons.

This was a massive pickup for LSU, which currently has just four scholarship linebackers on the roster: [autotag]Greg Penn III[/autotag], [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag], [autotag]West Weeks[/autotag] and early-enrollee [autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag]. True freshman [autotag]Christian Brathwaite[/autotag] also joins the team this summer.

With Speights’ addition, LSU has the No. 1 transfer class in the country this offseason.

OL Kardell Thomas leaving LSU as a graduate transfer

Thomas appeared in 11 games with two starts in four seasons with the Tigers.

The Tigers are set to return four of five starters on the offensive line as things currently stand, but they’re set to lose quite a bit of depth.

That depth situation got even worse on Wednesday as junior offensive lineman [autotag]Kardell Thomas[/autotag] opted to enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. Thomas appeared in 11 games in four seasons with two starts, both of which came in 2021. He appeared in four games this fall.

Thomas is a former consensus top-100 recruit from University Lab High School in Baton Rouge and a five-star recruit per the 247Sports Composite, will have two remaining years of eligibility.

With Thomas gone, LSU will look to players like [autotag]Marlon Martinez[/autotag], as well as true freshmen [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag] and [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag], as depth options for the 2023 season.

Walker Howard commits to SEC West rival

Howard is joining Lane Kiffin in Oxford.

Former LSU quarterback [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag] is heading to Ole Miss to join Lane Kiffin, the true freshman passer announced on Wednesday.

Howard, a native of Lafayette who attended St. Thomas More High School, redshirted during his first season in Baton Rouge after playing in just two games. Following the year, he opted to enter the transfer portal with four remaining years of eligibility.

The Rebels received a visit from Howard this week, as did TCU. Florida didn’t get Howard on campus, though it did recruit him and sent offensive coordinator Rob Sale to visit his home in Lafayette. It seems Howard will be remaining in the SEC West after all.

Howard has far from a clear path to starting in Oxford, Mississippi. Ole Miss returns quarterback Jaxson Dart, a USC transfer who started this season. He struggled at times but still seems poised to retain the job heading into 2023. He and Howard will battle it out this offseason.

Walker Howard makes transfer decision official with goodbye letter to LSU program

Howard made his decision to leave official, penning a letter to the LSU program and fanbase.

Players have removed themselves from the portal and decided to return to school after choosing to transfer in the past, but it seems that no such change of heart is coming for quarterback [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag].

The former four-star recruit and top-50 overall prospect entered the transfer portal last week in a decision that came as somewhat of a surprise. On Monday, Howard penned a farewell letter to the LSU program and fanbase, seemingly making his decision official in the process.

“As a kid, I have always dreamed of playing at LSU,” he said in his post on Twitter. “I never imagined being anywhere else. However, when things happen in life, we have to adjust and keep moving forward. With that being said, I have made the decision to leave LSU to look for the best spot for me to grow. This was a very difficult decision for me and my family. I can’t explain how thankful I am for all the relationships I have built at LSU.

“I want to thank coach Kelly and his staff for welcoming me with open arms and for always having my back. I am sad to leave my best friends and teammates, but I know that we will forever be friends. Thank you again, LSU.”

Howard has become a hot commodity on the transfer market already, taking visits to TCU and Ole Miss. The Lafayette native and St. Thomas More High School graduate was also visited at his home by Florida Gators offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator Rob Sale.

After only seeing action in two games this season and attempting four passes, Howard will officially be moving on with four remaining years of eligibility.

Former LSU cornerback Damarius McGhee commits to Kansas

The former four-star recruit in the 2021 class is heading to the Big 12.

Former Tigers cornerback [autotag]Damarius McGhee[/autotag] is heading to the Big 12 as he committed to join coach Lance Leipold at Kansas, according to an announcement on his Instagram Story. The Jayhawks had a breakout season in 2022, reaching six wins and bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008.

McGhee is a former top 200 overall prospect and four-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. He made 12 appearances as a true freshman including a start in the Texas Bowl, but he played in just one game this year as a sophomore in the win over Auburn.

Losing McGhee hurt LSU from a depth perspective, but it hit the transfer portal aggressively at corner again this offseason. McGhee meanwhile will hope to find the field more regularly in Lawrence.

Former LSU QB Walker Howard names two upcoming visits

The former Tigers quarterback officially entered the transfer portal on Friday, and he’ll take upcoming visits to TCU and Ole Miss.

Walker Howard’s official transfer portal announcement came out on Friday, and we now know who two of his visits are going to be: Howard is going to be visiting Ole Miss and TCU.

As soon as that news came out, Lane Kiffin wasted no time in trolling [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] on Twitter by retweeting the video of a Walker Howard recruiting trip to LSU. Kiffin is always looking for talented quarterbacks and Howard fits that mold.

TCU was named as a top suitor for Howard as soon as he entered the portal, but things may have changed as Garrett Riley is headed to be the offensive coordinator at Clemson.

There has also been a lot of smoke on Twitter about Billy Napier and Florida sliding in and trying to get Howard. The Gators could use a quarterback as they lost Anthony Richardson to the NFL Draft. They did sign Graham Mertz from Wisconsin out of the transfer portal, but you can always use more than one quarterback.
