4 things to know about Patriots undrafted QB J’Mar Smith

J’Mar Smith’s father, Kenny, had a brief stint with the Patriots.

New England Patriots undrafted quarterback J’Mar Smith out of Louisiana Tech is one of four quarterbacks on the roster fighting for reps.

Second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham is the frontrunner for the starting position with Brian Hoyer right behind him — while Smith and undrafted Michigan State-product Brian Lewerke fight for the third spot. Smith was a three-year starter for the Bulldogs and finished with a 25-12 record over that span.

Smith is a 6-foot, 218 pound player who has the capability of putting his head down and getting yards on the ground. He received a $5,000 signing bonus and $30,000 in guaranteed money, according to NESN’s Doug Kyed.

Here are four things to know about Smith.

His father, Kenny, had a brief stint with the Patriots

Kenny Smith was a defensive lineman who played 36 games in the NFL for three different teams — primarily the New Orleans Saints. He didn’t suit up and play any games with the Patriots, but he spent stints during the 2007 and 2008 seasons with the team.

He finished his NFL career with 71 combined tackles and 4.5 sacks.

He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2015

Smith was a multi-sport athlete who happened to get drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2015. He played catcher and was drafted in the 24th round — he decided to not sign out of high school. He began playing baseball at Louisiana Tech his freshman year and then turned his full attention to the gridiron.

He turned down offers form Mississippi State and Memphis

Smith was a three-star recruit out of high school and had offers from Mississippi State and Memphis, but he wanted to take his talents to Louisiana Tech. He ended up thriving for the Bulldogs and gradually improving after every season. Smith’s threw for 2,977 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions in the 11 games he played in his final year.

He was suspended his senior year for unknown reasons

Smith missed the final two games of his senior year for undisclosed reasons. He was on par to lead the Bulldogs to a New Year’s Six Bowl Game, but his suspension cut that dream short. He spoke about the incident briefly and acknowledged the fact he let his team down.

“I made a mistake at the end of the year, and I’ve grown from it. I’ve learned from it,” Smith said. “My circle has gotten smaller in trying to trust the people that’s been there for me the whole way.”

4 under-the-radar draft prospects the Jaguars should target

Jags Wire contributor Robert Ricks previews some low-key players the Jags should take a look at in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft will kick off on April 23-25 and teams are scrambling through their draft sheets to find the next great prospects.

While the first round can be full of notable names and predictable landing spots, the later rounds can be full of pleasant surprises to the fans but maybe not so pleasant for the prospects themselves.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will need to do everything possible to make sure that they make the correct picks as they look towards a complete retooling of the roster.

The football world has been accustomed to hearing the names of guys like former Louisiana State University quarterback Joe Burrow and Ohio State linebacker Chase Young, however, here are a few non-household names that the Jaguars can look to target in the later rounds:

Kevin Dotson, OG, Louisiana-Lafayette

(AP Photo/Tyler Kaufman)

The guard out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette could help a struggling spot on the Jaguars’ offensive line. More of a fifth or sixth round target, Dotson came in as PFF’s No. 1 rated guard with a 92.1 grade in 2019 and hasn’t finished lower than No. 19 in his career.

The Jaguars have been flawed at the guard spot with Andrew Norwell having a tough time with run blocking and A.J Cann completely struggling at the position as a whole.

Dotson would make for a nice late-round project as he has the build and upside to be a quality guard in the NFL. His pass protection will be problematic from the start as he gets matched up against NFL talent, but if he fixes those issues, he could be a great asset to the Jaguars’ offensive line.

Former Notre Dame DC Reportedly Headed to Purdue

Diaco left Notre Dame to become the head coach at Connecticut in 2014, a job he spent three seasons at going 11-26 in that time.  His trip to the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl (16-10 L vs Marshall) remains the last bowl game Connecticut played in.

I didn’t look at life a week ago and think I was going to be writing about former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Bob Diaco on two separate occasions but here we are.

Diaco and has Louisiana Tech squad shutout Miami (FL) 14-0 on December 26 in the Independence Bowl and four days later he’s headed to coordinate the defense of a historical Notre Dame rival.

Diaco was on Brian Kelly’s coaching staff at Notre Dame from 2010-2013 where he oversaw a defense that was responsible for the Fighting Irish going 12-0 in the 2012 regular season.

Diaco left Notre Dame to become the head coach at Connecticut in 2014, a job he spent three seasons at going 11-26 in that time.  His trip to the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl (16-10 L vs Marshall) remains the last bowl game Connecticut played in.

The Huskies went just 3-9 the following season however and Diaco was fired from the job.

He’s since spent time at Nebraska (2017, Defensive Coordinator), Oklahoma (2018, Linebackers) and Louisiana Tech (2019, Defensive Coordinator).

Diaco won the Broyles Award at Notre Dame in 2012 as the nation’s top assistant coach when the Irish allowed one or fewer touchdowns in eight of their 12 regular season games.

I don’t know how it will ultimately go for Diaco at Purdue.  He’s spent a season in the Big Ten before as Nebraska’s D-C and had a rough go as his Cornhuskers allowed 30 or more points eight times that season.

What I do know is that life just got more interesting for those that cover Purdue football:

“Like Pavlov’s dogs – I walk through the gate and I salivate!”

I’m just mad I didn’t use that for my senior quote.

Bob Diaco Blanks Miami in Independence Bowl

It’s an incredibly small sample size but I feel safe in saying Diaco owns “The U”.

Do enough Notre Dame fans remember the great Bob Diaco?

He was the defensive coordinator on the 2012 squad who took the head job at Connecticut after the 2013 season where he lasted three seasons before being fired.

He ran Nebraska’s defense in 2017 and Oklahoma’s last year before getting the Louisiana Tech D-C job this season.

As you can tell life hasn’t been easy for Diaco since departing Notre Dame but he did have a brush with glory Thursday afternoon as his Louisiana Tech squad shutout the Miami Hurricanes in the Independence Bowl, 14-0.

It’s an incredibly small sample size but I feel safe in saying Diaco owns “The U”.

In two games against Miami this decade his team has allowed three total points as you may recall the 41-3 destruction Notre Dame had of the Hurricanes in 2012.

With the loss Miami finishes 6-7 on the year while Louisiana Tech wraps up 10-3.

Since Miami roughed up Notre Dame late in 2017 the Canes have gone from No. 2 in the nation to 13-16 over their last 29 games.

It may be 29 years since Notre Dame and Miami played annually but I have a hard time believing any Fighting Irish fans feel too bad for Miami after this latest embarrassment.

Independence Bowl: Miami vs. Louisiana Tech odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Thursday’s Independence Bowl between the Miami Hurricanes and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, with betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

The Miami Hurricanes (6-6) and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (9-3) lock horns in the Walk-On’s Independence Bowl Thursday. Kickoff at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, La. is set for 4 p.m. ET. We analyze the Miami-Louisiana Tech odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Miami vs. Louisiana Tech: Three things you need to know

1. The Hurricanes were once one of the most feared teams in all of college football, but seeing them in a bowl game lately is good news for the opponent. ‘The U’ has won just one of its past nine bowl game appearances, a 31-14 win over West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl Dec. 28, 2016. Miami lost its only previous Independence Bowl appearance to South Carolina by a 24-21 count on Dec. 27, 2014.

2. Louisiana Tech, coming on hour west down Interstate 20 from Ruston, has won five straight bowl appearances. The Bulldogs have appeared in the Independence Bowl four times, but not since Dec. 28, 2008, when they topped Northern Illinois 17-10. They’re 2-1-1 all-time in Shreveport.

3. Louisiana Tech is 6-1 against the spread in the past seven bowl games, and 4-1 ATS in the past five neutral-site affairs. Miami is 2-9 ATS in the past 11 on a neutral site, and 1-7 ATS in the past eight bowl appearances.

Prediction

Louisiana Tech 24, Miami 20

Moneyline (ML)

Miami (-213) is moderately favored in this one, and it’ll draw the eye of the public. However, LOUISIANA TECH (+175) is a tremendous bargain playing just an hour from campus. The Bulldogs will be excited to be in this game with something to prove against a Power 5 team. The Hurricanes aren’t tickled about being in Shreveport for the holidays, a game they feel is beneath their standards. It will show in their play on the field, as it usually does come bowl season.

Against the Spread (ATS)

LOUISIANA TECH (+5.5, -106) is a good play if you just can’t get on board with a straight-up win by the Bulldogs. La. Tech has a strong offense, ranking 30th in total yards per game (445.2) and 31st in passing yards (277.3), while ranking 28th in points scored per game (34.0). The defense is so-so, but that’s fine because so is Miami’s offense. The Hurricanes were 88th in total yards, and 120th in rushing offense while ranking just 73rd in points scored. The key here will be if Miami’s defense shows up. It was 13th in the nation in total yards allowed, but this is also a team which lost to Florida International and Duke down the stretch.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 49.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit bet, but I wouldn’t go crazy. The Under is 15-7 in La. Tech’s past 22 overall, and 5-2 in the past seven bowls. The Under is 7-2 in the past nine neutral-site battles, too. For Miami, the Under is 5-1 in the past six bowls, and 9-3 in the past 12 vs. winning teams.

Louisiana Tech at Marshall odds: Herd favored in key C-USA game

Previewing Friday’s Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Marshall Thundering Herd college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (8-1, 5-0 Conference USA West) visit the Marshall Thundering Herd (6-3, 4-1 C-USA East) Friday night in Huntington, W. Va., at 7 p.m. ET.

We analyze the Louisiana Tech-Marshall odds and betting lines, while providing college football betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Louisiana Tech at Marshall: Three things you need to know

1. While this is a cross-divisional matchup in C-USA, it’s a key game. The Bulldogs hold a slim one-game lead on Southern Miss in the West Division, while Marshall is a half-game back of Florida Atlantic in the East.

2. The Bulldogs rank 18th in the nation in total yards (479.1), 23rd in passing yards (292.1) and 13th in points scored (38.1).

3. Marshall ranks 50th in the country with 426.0 total yards per game, and 50th defensively with 371.1 total yards allowed.

Prediction

Louisiana Tech 30, Marshall 24

Moneyline (ML)

LOUISIANA TECH (+170) is a rather moderate underdog on the road despite an 8-1 SU record. Marshall (-209) is favored at home, but is a little short-handed with WRs Obi Obialo (foot) out indefinitely and WR Artie Henry (undisclosed) done for the season.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Louisiana Tech returns a profit of $17 if the Bulldogs prevail.

Against the Spread (ATS)

Take LOUISIANA TECH (+3.5, +105) catching the points. The Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in the past four, 4-1 ATS in the past five C-USA battles and 6-2 ATS in the previous eight games against teams with a winning record. La. Tech is also 10-4 ATS in the past 14 on the road.

On the flip side, Marshall (-3.5, -125) is just 2-12 ATS in the past 14 games at home and 2-5 ATS in the past seven conference tilts. It’s also just 2-5 ATS in the past seven overall and 1-4 ATS in the previous five coming off a bye week.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER (56.5, -115) is the play. The under has cashed in seven of the past nine road games for Louisiana Tech, while going 10-4 in the past 14 conference battles. The trends points to the over for Marshall, but injury woes in the pass game will force the Thundering Herd to try and run a lot more. Usually, ground-based attacks equal under results.
