Height isn’t most important CB attribute for Cowboys’ draft worthiness, this is

Contrary to popular belief, the Dallas Cowboys draft cornerbacks at roughly the average height as most other NFL teams. | From @ReidDHanson

The Cowboys love tall cornerbacks with long arms. Everyone knows it. From the Kris Richard era to the Dan Quinn regime, Dallas seems to be obsessed with size.

Approaching the 2023 NFL draft, size is often used as a determining factor as to whether the prospect is a good fit for the Cowboys or not. Vertically deficient players are considered poor fits while just about every prospect over 6-foot-2 gets an automatic swipe right.

If that really is Dallas’ reputation, is it accurate?

Looking at recent averages of draft pick measurables, this reputation can be put to the test. Arjun Menon built an app that looks at data from 2011-2022 and offers insight into what traits the Cowboys draft and how it compares across the NFL.

As it turns out, the average height for a Cowboys CB drafted in the first three rounds is 72.1 inches (translated to 6.008 feet). While this is certainly tall, it’s not abnormally tall and certainly not worthy of the reputation Dallas has around the league. After all, there are 14 teams in the NFL who have a higher average height (of their CB draft picks) than the Cowboys.

The average arm length of a Dallas CB draft pick sits at 32.2 inches, which is tied for sixth in the NFL. This places them in the top quarter of the NFL but certainly not in an outlier category like some suggest. Although arm length appears to be a requirement for the Cowboys, even in the later rounds when most teams relax their standards.

Dallas likes length but so does the rest of the NFL. Even with the resurgence of the Cover-2 (middle of the field open), the league still leans on Cover -1 and Cover-3 (middle of the field closed). Everyone wants tall CBs because they make windows small and can play the sideline more effectively.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

If there is one area of testing that Dallas leans on heavily in CB evaluation, it appears to be the broad jump. The average broad jump score for a CB drafted by the Cowboys (again, filtered for the first three rounds) is 128.21 inches. That’s third highest in the NFL.

Broad jump, which measures explosion, is often used to find special athletes. In a vacuum it may not be indicative of success but matched with speed, quickness and other factors it can be a telling measurable.

As the numbers suggest, the Cowboys aren’t as size obsessed with their cornerbacks as many believe. Their reputation is likely buoyed by a few vertical outliers (see also: 6-foot-4 Nahshon Wright) and not based on the mean average.

Food for thought heading into another draft.

Will Levis the favorite to be No. 2 pick in NFL draft

Odds have shifted in favor of Will Levis being the No. 2 pick.

With less than a week until the arrival of the 2023 NFL draft, the betting markets are closing in on what they project the draft order to be like, and it seems Kentucky’s Will Levis is rising up the boards.

Paying attention to the betting markets is important because sometimes they’ll know about what’s to come before the media will. And according to Caesers Sportsbook, Levis is now the favorite to be the No. 2 overall pick.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

With Bryce Young the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers, this is a pretty big shift in the odds with less than a week to go.

Speculation suggests this could mean a few things. It could mean a team is wanting to trade up to the No. 2 overall pick with the Houston Texans or the Texans themselves are zeroing in on Levis as their selection.

At this point, it’s incredibly difficult to know what will happen Thursday night when the first round of the draft arrives. The Indianapolis Colts themselves are likely waiting to see where the chips fall before they know who they are going to pick.

But if Levis is the No. 2 pick, that means C.J. Stroud will slide, and that could mean a bidding war for teams wanting to move up to the No. 3 pick in a trade with the Arizona Cardinals.

But with the betting markets shifting, this is something to keep an eye on leading up to the draft.

2023 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 1st round wishlist

2023 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions 1st round wishlist from Lions Wire’s Russell Brown

We’re four days away from the 2023 NFL Draft and as we know the Detroit Lions should make two selections on the opening night of the draft. We’ve seen a million scenarios where the Lions take defensive ends, offensive linemen, cornerbacks and even quarterbacks.

While it’s always tough to pinpoint exactly what any organization will do on the opening night, we all have our wants and aspirations for our teams. Today, I want to go over a wishlist of players that I’d love to see selected by the Detroit Lions with the 6th and 18th overall picks of the 2023 NFL Draft.

6th Overall:

Will Anderson, EDGE, Alabama

This one is an obvious one. If he’s available by the 6th pick, the Lions will sprint to the podium. I’ve heard that he’s the top player on their board and there’s been some thought of the Lions moving up to get Anderson.

On my Big Board for the 2023 NFL Draft, I think he’s the best player in the draft. At 6-foot-3 and 253 pounds, he plays fluid and has great length while being able to translate speed-to-power off the edge. Pairing Anderson with Aidan Hutchinson would give the Lions an elite pairing that could threaten offensive tackles on a weekly basis in the NFL.

C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State

I’m sure this will be controversial for some but it does feel like the Lions are going to be in a similar situation as they were in the 2020 NFL Draft. During that draft, all signs were pointing to Matthew Stafford being near the end of his Lions career and rather than selecting quarterbacks Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa, they selected cornerback Jeff Okudah.

Obviously, it was a tough decision as the Lions previous regime weren’t going to throw in the towel on Stafford and hit the reset button. But now they could be staring down the road again as Jared Goff is due for a contract extension next season.

Personally, I have no issues with Goff being the Lions starting quarterback. As long as there’s no regression to his game, he can be a quality starter. Last season he was efficient running Ben Johnson’s offense with 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns. However, if Goff is going to want a contract that’s in the same ballpark as Deshaun Watson or Jalen Hurts, then we’ve got a problem.

That said, I think it would be tough for the Lions to pass on Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud. Of course, he’s got to be available but Stroud would add the depth and competition to the position. By adding Stroud, the Lions would be bringing in a player that has been compared to Jared Goff during the pre-draft process.

While that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s worth mentioning that this would buy the Lions time at the position for another four or five years, if he does perform similar to Goff.  There’s also potential for him to outperform Goff and take a massive step forward as a quarterback. It’s unlikely that Stroud slips past the Colts with the 4th overall pick but crazier things have happened.

Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon

I’ve been the leader of this train for a while. The best pure coverage corner in the draft is Gonzalez. He’s got an extremely fluid lower half and is always competitive at the catch point. If the Lions are looking for a number one cornerback from the draft, I think Gonzalez fits the criteria.

There are times that Gonzalez gets knocked for not being a physical tackler or that he doesn’t fit what the Lions look for in a corner. I find that hard to believe as they’ve never taken a player at the position this high in the draft. That said, there are plenty of instances on tape where Gonzalez shows his ability to tackle and play physically. We’ll know in a few days if he’s a guy that the Lions are interested in taking.

Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois

The most commonly discussed cornerback for the Lions is right here. Devon Witherspoon from Illinois is the favorite to be the 6th overall pick and much of that is due to his physicality and connection to Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph. I will say that Witherspoon is a bit of an outlier at the position for 181 pounds, but there have been some comparisons to Denzel Ward.

There are plenty of instances on tape where Witherspoon flies upfield and makes devastating hits. Meanwhile, he leaves college with 25 pass deflections and five interceptions for his career. There’s plenty to like with his ball skills and physical presence on the perimeter.

I’d be fine with either cornerback at the 6th overall pick as I think it’s the Lions’ biggest need right now. Whether it’s Witherspoon or Gonzalez, I truly don’t think the Lions can go wrong.

18th Overall:

Bryan Bresee, IDL, Clemson

The more that I’ve watched Bryan Bresee out of Clemson, the more that I think he fits what Dan Campbell preaches about in a football player. He’s a high-character player that shows an excellent motor on tape. If you don’t believe me, put on the Florida State game from this year. While his pad level rises, he does show tremendous effort and pursuit to the football.

This wouldn’t be a fan-favorite pick, but for me, it’s about adding good football players. That’s exactly what Bresee is — a good football player. He’ll need to stay healthy in the NFL but adding him to pair with Alim McNeil and Isaiah Buggs should lead to a versatile and productive interior.

Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee

I might be higher on Darnell Wright than most. On my board, he ended up with a first-round ground and was my 15th-ranked player. That said, he’s on my wishlist because I don’t see how he escapes the top-17 picks of the draft. I’ve even mocked him to the Chicago Bears with the 9th overall pick.

That said, if he somehow falls to the Lions with the 18th overall pick, I think it’s comparable to a Will Anderson scenario with the 6th overall pick. Wright is a vicious right tackle that got the better of Anderson earlier this season. From his games against LSU, Florida and just about anyone else, Wright dominated.

He’s got a terrific snatch-trap technique that he uses to bury defenders into the dirt on a consistent basis. He put his talent on display at the 2023 Senior Bowl and was even more impressive when getting to talk with him. He’s a student of the game and understands how to beat defenders with leverage and power. Pairing him with Penei Sewell could lead to All-Pro production on the right side of their offensive line.

Nolan Smith, EDGE, Georgia

It wouldn’t be surprising if Nolan Smith was selected with the 8th overall pick or the 10th overall pick. However, if he somehow made it down to the 18th pick, I could see the Lions being very intrigued with selecting him.

At 6-foot-2 and 239 pounds, he’s a bit light, but he’s got a muscular frame. Smith chooses and finds violence. He takes on split-zone blocks well and is a productive pass rusher due to his hands and motor. While he’s coming off a torn pectoral muscle, he’s expected to be a top-15 pick.

If he somehow makes it to the 18th pick, I think the Lions will strongly consider adding him to their rotation of pass rushers. With a rotation of Nolan Smith, Josh Paschal, John Cominksy, Aidan Hutchinson and James Houston, the Lions would have a deep group of pass rushers, and it should translate to plenty of success.

Michigan football makes top group for 2024 4-star EDGE

Another player who played at the same high school as a former Wolverine. #GoBlue

Michigan football recently offered 2024 Cheshire (Conn.) Academy three-star linebacker Elijah Newby, and now the Wolverines have their eyes on another standout from the East Coast high school.

It’s been a long while since he suited up in maize and blue, former Wolverines wide receiver Tarik Black hailed from Cheshire Academy, but Michigan is hoping its second comes soon. And if it’s not Newby, there’s a four-star edge rusher at the same high school who just placed the maize and blue in his top six.

At 6-foot-3, 230-pounds, Jacob Smith doesn’t have that overpowering size you might see from a premier EDGE, but he does have an impressive offer sheet. And Michigan football made the cut for his top six, along with Notre Dame, Kentucky, Nebraska, Georgia, and Alabama.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Currently, the four-star has one 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction indicating that Kentucky will be his school of choice. He’s ranked No. 208 overall according to the 247Sports Composite, the 18th-ranked EDGE, and the third-best player in the state of Connecticut.

Michigan football offers unranked 2024 behemoth DT from SEC country

Unranked but with those offers? Sheesh! #GoBlue

It’s pretty rare that a recruit from the heart of SEC country goes under the radar, but such appears to be the case for an emerging defensive tackle in Louisiana.

Despite having offers from Ohio State, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and Miami, 2024 New Orleans (La.) defensive tackle Jowhar Franklin is unranked by the recruiting services. But, the soon-to-be senior in high school is already 6-foot-6, 300-pounds, so he’s already at an ideal weight to play at the next level.

On Saturday, his offer sheet grew by one, and it’s one the biggest he’s received thus far, as Michigan football extended an opportunity to the rising 2024 player.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

Given his offer sheet, it’s more likely than not that the recruiting services are behind, as several other big-time schools are involved in Franklin’s recruitment.

Though schools like Ohio State and Nebraska got involved sooner, it’s unclear if the Wolverines will be able to climb into his top group. Most of his big offers have come within the past month, with OSU offering on March 29, Nebraska offering on April 6, and Colorado offering on April 16.

Ex-Giant Sandro Platzgummer signs with Raiders Tirol of EFL

Former New York Giants running back Sandro Platzgummer has signed with the Raiders Tirol of the European Football League.

Former New York Giants running back Sandro Platzgummer, who announced he wouldn’t be back with the team in February, will not be playing in the NFL this year. Instead, he’ll be playing in the European Football League.

Raiders Tirol head coach Kevin Herron announced the signing of Platzgummer earlier this week.

“I am super excited for this new challenge. It is a league that is new for me but there are a lot of old teammates and coaches I would love to work with,” Platzgummer said in a statement released by the team.

“I am very happy to be back with the Raiders Tirol and can continue my career where it started. There was never any other option for me in Europe.”

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

The 26-year-old Platzgummer joined the Giants in 2020 via the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program. He spent three seasons on the team’s practice squad and although he never appeared in a regular season game, the Austrian became a favorite among his teammates.

In a 2021 preseason game against the New York Jets, Platzgummer realized his professional dream by ripping off an impressive 48-yard run.

With three years of NFL experience under his belt, Platzgummer is likely to dominate the EFL. Early expectations are that he’ll win the Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Joel Klatt makes his case for Michigan football in 2023

WHOA! #GoBlue

Michigan football has it all heading into 2023. The Wolverines have the fifth-most returning production in college football, they have a returning starting quarterback in former five-star J.J. McCarthy, who is coming off of his first year as a starter. Jim Harbaugh thinks this is his best team since taking over the program on December 30, 2014.

And one big-time analyst thinks he’s right.

Appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, Fox Sports’ premier color commentator Joel Klatt waxed ecstatic about not only what the maize and blue have, but compared to the other powers in college football, why Michigan is in a particularly advantageous situation.

[affiliatewidget_smgtolocal]

“I know it’s early, but this is his best team coming back,” Klatt said. “It is. It is his best team he’s ever had. It’s got all the pieces.

“He’s got Ohio State trying to break in a new quarterback, he’s got Penn State trying to break in a new quarterback. He’s got Georgia trying to break in a new quarterback. He’s got Alabama trying to break in a new quarterback. I’m just saying.

“I think Michigan is going to be really good. And I think Harbaugh kicking the tires on the NFL had more to do with his relationships up in Ann Arbor than it did his desire to go to the NFL.”

So how good could the Wolverines be?

Klatt stopped short of the ‘national championship or bust’ rhetoric coming out of Ann Arbor, but he does anticipate that the maize and blue will be hoisting the conference championship trophy for the third-straight year.

“I can’t wait to see them. Blake Corum coming back and some of those (players),” Klatt said. “Will Johnson’s going to be a top corner in the draft in a couple of years. I think Michigan is going to be — and people at Ohio State hate this — Michigan is going to be my pick to win the Big Ten.”
