A pair of Saints defenders were selected for PFF’s top 101 players of 2022

A pair of Saints defenders were selected for PFF’s top 101 players of 2022, with Demario Davis and Tyrann Mathieu making the list:

A couple of New Orleans Saints standouts were recognized on the list of the top 101 NFL players of the 2022 season from Pro Football Focus analyst Sam Monson. They’re both veteran defenders, and they happened to lead the team in snaps played last season. But neither player made the cut for the top 50, which hurts, and only one of them was selected for the Pro Bowl Games all-star event.

Ah well. Tyrann Mathieu and Demario Davis figure to be a major part of the team’s success in 2023 anyway. Here’s what PFF had to say about each of them:

NFL announces list of 2023 scouting combine invitations

The NFL announced its list of 2023 scouting combine participants, including 15 quarterback prospects:

The NFL announced its list of 319 prospects in the 2023 draft who have been invited to this year’s scouting combine in Indianapolis, where they’ll go through a week of interviews with teams and media as well as grueling workouts, physicals, and other exams. Expect the New Orleans Saints to have a heavy presence at the event in late February.

In most years, about 90% of the prospects who compete at the combine end up hearing their name called during the draft’s 260-or-so picks. The gauntlet of private meetings, on-field workouts, timing drills, and medical evaluations are critical in filling out scouting reports around the league and the Saints always put importance on this step in the process.

The 2023 scouting combine lasts from Feb. 28 to March 6 in downtown Indianapolis, with activities held at Lucas Oil Stadium and the Indiana Convention Center. This year’s list of prospects includes 15 hopeful quarterbacks, though it remains to be seen who will throw and compete in drills:

  • Bryce Young
  • C.J. Stroud
  • Will Levis
  • Anthony Richardson
  • Hendon Hooker (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Max Duggan (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Stetson Bennett
  • Tanner McKee
  • Tyson Bagent (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Malik Cunningham (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Jake Haener (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Jaren Hall (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Aidan O’Connell (Shrine Bowl participant)
  • Clayton Tune (Senior Bowl participant)
  • Dorian Thompson-Robinson (Shrine Bowl participant)

Former teammates outnumber current Saints on NFLPA top-5 position leaders

More former Saints players have been named top-5 at their positions by NFLPA voting than their old teammates still on the roster:

Yikes. The NFLPA released its top-five lists at each position group after previously sharing its first-ever All-Pro team this year, and more of the New Orleans Saints’ former players were recognized than players who are still on the team.

Just two current Saints players ranked inside the top five vote-getters at their position: right tackle Ryan Ramczyk (who tied for fourth-most with the Minnesota Vikings’ Brian O’Neill) and off-ball linebacker Demario Davis (who also ranked fourth at his position group).

But three of their former teammates were listed on this league-spanning list. Some of the departures made sense in light of injury histories and contract demands, but others are still kind of baffling. Let’s review:

New Orleans Saints 53-man roster for Week 11 vs. Rams, ordered by jersey number

Here is the updated New Orleans Saints 53-man roster for their Week 11 game against the Los Agneles Rams, ordered by jersey number:

There have been quite a few changes to the New Orleans Saints depth chart this week, with shakeups coming to both the 53-man roster and the 16-man practice squad. We’ve recapped the practice squad moves already, but here’s a look at the current state of their roster ahead of Week 11’s kickoff with the Los Angeles Rams, ordered by jersey numbers:

Saints reach injury settlement with cornerback Jordan Brown

The Saints reached an injury settlement with cornerback Jordan Brown, leaving ten players on New Orleans’ injured reserve list:

The New Orleans Saints waived cornerback Jordan Brown after agreeing to an injury settlement, per ESPN’s Katherine Terrell, allowing him to become a free agent after landing on New Orleans’ injured reserve list. Brown was first signed on Aug. 8 after a series of injuries hit the depth chart, but he exited the team’s first preseason game with the Houston Texans after just five plays. The nature of his injury remains undisclosed.

But these injury settlements are common this time of the year. They free up some resources from the team’s payroll and open time for the training staff to work with other players, while the player leaving injured reserve gets an immediate payout and the opportunity to pursue opportunities with other teams once they can pass a physical. If this is a short-term injury sidelining him for a matter of weeks rather than months, he should be able to catch on elsewhere sometime soon. Good luck to him.

As for the Saints — here are the list of players still on their injured reserve list:

  • S No. 38 Smoke Monday
  • LT No. 63 Jerald Hawkins
  • CB No. 37 Dylan Mabin
  • LB No. 52 D’Marco Jackson
  • T/G No. 73 Ethan Greenidge
  • CB No. 31 Bryce Thompson
  • S No. 42 Isaiah Pryour
  • DT No. 91 Jaleel Johnson
  • LT No. 79 Sage Doxtater
  • LG No. 77 Forrest Lamp

Alvin Kamara headlines 5 Saints players on NFL Network’s Top 100 list

Alvin Kamara headlines five Saints players on NFL Network’s Top 100 list, but every one of them is ranked too low:

It’s tough to buy the idea that there are 50 better pro football players than Alvin Kamara, but that’s what this year’s NFL Network Top 100 list is trying to sell, ranking the five-time Pro Bowler all the way down at No. 51. The list voted on by players around the league debuted Sunday evening with the first 50 selections, and five of them are New Orleans Saints stars. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that each of them is undervalued, specifically cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who actually fell a few spots from last year’s list after turning in the best performance since his award-winning rookie season. It’s just odd. But we know this list has a less-than-scientific process behind it, and it honestly isn’t too shocking to see corners who can actually cover ranked behind boom-or-bust players who give up a lot of catches while jumping routes to try and intercept a pass here and there. It’s just disappointing, is all.

Anyway: the next group of players, listed Nos. 50 to 31, will be revealed on Sunday, Aug. 21. Here are the five Saints players to make the cut so far, and where they ranked last year:

The Green Bay Packers currently have 12 players with expiring contracts or contracts that void following the 2022 season, including safety Adrian Amos, offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, kicker Mason Crosby, receivers Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard and tight end Robert Tonyan.

The Packers are operating year-by-year alongside quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who returned to Green Bay on a new deal but isn’t committed to playing past the 2022 season. General manager Brian Gutekunst will likely base many future roster decisions on whether or not Rodgers is back for 2023.
