Ohio State cracks top three in On3’s quarterback unit rankings

What do you think about the current quarterback room for Ohio State? #GoBucks

For the second straight season the starting quarterback job for the Ohio State football team isn’t set in stone. With a lot of talent in the quarterback room, head coach Ryan Day will have a big decision on his hands when it comes time to decide which quarterback to roll with.

On3’s college football columnist, Jesse Simonton, is high on Ohio State’s options at quarterback headed into next season as he ranked the Buckeyes second on his quarterback unit rankings in an article released last week.

Ohio State’s quarterback room has a great mix of experience and young talent giving the Buckeyes a lot of good options at the position for the 2024 season and beyond.

Will Howard is the favorite to land the starting position for 2024 as the Kansas State transfer made 34 appearances and 27 starts in his four seasons with the Wildcats. He threw for 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while adding 351 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in 2023.

Julian Sayin, the top ranked quarterback in the 2024 class who transferred to the Buckeyes from Alabama after Nick Saban’s retirement has received high praise in the spring practice period and even shed his black stripe in April.

It would be a remarkable feat for a true freshman to start at quarterback for the Buckeyes but Sayin has the talent to at least compete for the job this season and has a bright future moving forward.

Devin Brown, who backed up Kyle McCord last season is another option.  The former four-star recruit in the 2022 class made six appearances last season and had a solid showing at the spring game in April.

The Buckeyes also have two good developmental quarterbacks in Lincoln Kienholz and Air Noland. Kienholz was a four-star recruit in the 2023 class. Noland, also a high four-star, will have his first season with the Buckeyes in the fall. Each of them likely won’t contend for the starting job this season but could also be a factor in the future.

Ohio State players seem to know who the starting quarterback will be in the Cotton Bowl

This isn’t surprising

After Ohio State football quarterback Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal, leaving QB1 vacant for the Buckeyes, many wondered who was going to be head coach Ryan Day’s guy.

Although there was no official announcement, when [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon, he may have tipped Day’s hand, saying that he was excited to get the opportunity to play.

Brown addressed the burn the boat tweet, explained that he was surprised by McCord leaving the program, his ankle injury, and plenty more. What stood out to me the most was the leadership aspect of the position and fulling taking the reins of winning over his teammates.

It’s going to be an exciting bowl game for the Buckeyes, especially considering Brown’s teammates have complimented his ability.

Personally, I hope Brown does well, but also getting to see what [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] can do. December 29 just got much more interesting.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day unsure which quarterback will start the Cotton Bowl

The Buckeyes quarterback competition apparently isn’t over this season. #GoBucks

After starting for the majority of Ohio State football’s season, you’d think quarterback [autotag]Kyle McCord[/autotag]’s job would be safe heading into the Cotton Bowl against Missouri.

As Lee Corso famously says, “not so fast my friend.”

When head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] was asked about McCord’s job, he said “everyone is going to have the opportunity to compete, and get after it during bowl practice. And then when it’s time to go play in the game, we’ll figure out who should gets the reps and go from there.”

McCord beat out [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] after a long competition that went into the first few weeks of the season, so expect him to be in the mix.

You can’t discount freshman [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] either, who gained some reps late in the last few games when Brown was out with an ankle injury. It’s going to be a very interesting last few weeks of the year leading up to the Cotton Bowl and beyond.

Are the Ohio State short-yardage quarterback plays still an option after Devon Brown’s injury?

This would be interesting #GoBucks

Over the last few weeks, the [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] coaches saw a way to get backup quarterback [autotag]Devin Brown[/autotag] onto the field in short-yardage situations.

The results have been a mixed bag: 10 carries for 25 yards and a score but also a fumble into the end zone. Last week against Penn State, Brown rolled his ankle, had to be carted off the field and will miss multiple weeks as he heals.

You probably would have thought the Buckeyes short-yardage quarterback package wasn’t an option in Brown’s absence. However, head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] mentioned during his time with the media that true freshman [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] could take over those duties.

This is an intriguing option, as Kienholz is an elite athlete, more so than Brown. He has four games to play without burning the planned redshirt, so using him in the right situations is paramount.

You have to believe that Day is setting up a pass at some point with this package, but we have yet to see it. Maybe he’s holding onto this for their final regular season game.

Ohio State quarterback Lincoln Kienholz had a very exciting past few days

The Buckeye backup is having himself a week! #GoBucks

It’s a right of passage for [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] players to have their black stripe removed and to officially become a member of the program.

It may have taken freshman quarterback [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] a bit longer than some of his teammates to lose his stipe, but it happened on Thursday afternoon. The former 4-star prospect who was named theUSA TODAY national high school athlete of the year, not just for football, as he was a star on the baseball diamond and basketball court as well.

Although we won’t see Kienholz much this fall, the future is bright for the young man, who could be in the mix for the starting spot next year depending on player movement.

That was Kienholz’s Thursday, and on Friday he got the cherry on top. A Name, image and likeness deal with [autotag]Byers Audi of Columbus[/autotag] got the Buckeye quarterback a nice new Audi Q5 to ride around campus.

Not his first NIL deal, Kienholz also signed with [autotag]Tommy John[/autotag] clothing line. It literally pays to be an Ohio State quarterback, even the backups.

Ohio State football’s third-string quarterback, Lincoln Kienholz, sign’s NIL deal

The third-stringer getting NIL deals?!? It really does pay to be an Ohio State quarterback #GoBucks

It pays to be an [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag] quarterback and true freshman [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] is a prime example.

The USA TODAY high school athlete of the year has yet to play a down for the Buckeyes, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t marketable to businesses. One of those would be [autotag]Tommy John[/autotag], who jump started a relationship with Kienholz in a name, image and likeness deal that was announced on Wednesday.

The Buckeye quarterback was made one of their spokespeople after Tommy John mentioned to On3’s Pete Nakos that “Lincoln’s embodiment of hard work, determination, and the pursuit of greatness aligns perfectly with the values we celebrate.”

You have to expect this is the first of many NIL deals Kienholz will gain as a member of the Ohio State football team. Congrats, Lincoln!

Ohio State freshman named USA TODAY High School Athlete of the Year

What an honor, congrats Lincoln #GoBucks

Not only did [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] sign a good quarterback in [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag], they signed an exceptional athlete.

The South Dakota native was a 3-sport star at Riggs High School and was given a massive honor on Monday morning when Kienholz was named the USA TODAY High School athlete of the year.

Obviously, Kienholz starred on the football field but he also excelled on the basketball court and the baseball diamond. He was an All-State basketball player who finished his career as the school’s second all-time leading scorer and helped the baseball team win a state title. Kienholz also starred on the football team that won their 6th consecutive state title.

Congrats to Lincoln on an outstanding high school career and what hopefully is a stellar Buckeye career as well.

Watch: Ohio State quarterback signee shows he could join Zone 6 as well

The Buckeyes are getting a phenomenal athlete #GoBucks

The hype train for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] quarterback signee Lincoln Kienholz is boarding, and tickets are being sold fast.

The South Dakota three-sport star has finished his basketball season, for which he was named an All-State first-team player at guard for the second year in a row. He is currently playing baseball. That hasn’t stopped him from preparing for his career with the Buckeyes although not just as a quarterback.

In a clip he shared on Twitter and tagged offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] and quarterback coach [autotag]Corey Dennis[/autotag], Kienholz jumps, turns his body in mid-air and catches a pass with one hand on a throw behind him.

It’s safe to say Kienholz is a fantastic athlete, one whose skills will be used at the next level even if it’s throwing the passes and not catching them.

You can bet the Ohio State coaching staff can’t wait to get Kienholz on campus.

WATCH: Ohio State signee Lincoln Kienholz shows athleticism with a crazy dunk

The Buckeyes got one impressive athlete in Kienholz #GoBucks

It’s not every day you see a quarterback with elite athleticism that transfers to the basketball court, but that is what [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] has with signee Lincoln Kienholz.

The three-sport star has excelled at everything in South Dakota. One of the reasons Kienholz didn’t graduate early to get a head start with head coach Ryan Day and quarterback coach Corey Dennis was he wanted to finish his high school career in style.

After seeing this dunk by Kienholz, you can say it’s going according to plan. Check out below as the future Buckeye quarterback steals a pass and then converts the fast break with an impressive windmill dunk.

Maybe he could play both in Columbus? The basketball team could surely use him now.

Kienholz is the 189th overall recruit and 15th quarterback on the 247Sports composite.
