Cade Klubnik leads No. 3 Westlake to blowout win over Lake Travis in return

Cade Klubnik totaled five touchdowns in his return to lead No. 3 Westlake to a blowout win over Lake Travis.

Mater Dei and IMG Academy have sat comfortably in the top two of the USA TODAY Sports Super 25 since the beginning of the season. Both programs have multiple signature wins under their belt and have stamped themselves as the best of the best this year.

Mater Dei is not in any danger of losing its No. 1 ranking, but No. 3 Westlake has a case to take over the second spot with the way it played against Lake Travis on Friday night.

Clemson commit Cade Klubnik and Westlake rolled over a Lake Travis team that entered 8-1 and features Ohio State wide receiver commit Caleb Burton in a 63-21 win. Klubnik accounted for five touchdowns in his return to the field after missing time with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder.

Klubnik did not show any signs of rust, throwing for three touchdowns, rushing for two more and totaling over 250 yards of offense. The senior quarterback led Westlake to an early 14-0 lead and Lake Travis was never really in the game from that point on, as Klubnik and Westlake kicked it into gear and never looked back.

“He got hurt four weeks ago, went to work on his rehab and here he is,” Westlake head coach Todd Dodge said. “He was ready to go, but it doesn’t surprise me one bit. It’s who he is.”

Klubnik received some help from sophomore running back Jack Kayser, who rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown, caught two passes for 89 yards and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. Kayer’s touchdown run was a 62-yard scamper to the end zone in the second quarter.

Lake Travis got the best of Westlake the last time the two teams met, but it was all Chapparals on Friday night en route to a Texas District 26 6A championship. With Klubnik back and clearly at 100%, Westlake remains the favorite to bring home a state championship in Dodge’s final season at the helm.

15-year-old latest Texas angler to land record largemouth bass

A 15-year-old angler on Sunday landed the heaviest largemouth bass ever caught at Lake Travis in central Texas.

A 15-year-old angler on Sunday landed the heaviest largemouth bass ever caught at Lake Travis in central Texas.

Trace Jansen’s catch of a 15.32-pound bass breaks a lake record that had stood since 1993. But Jansen also joins a small group of Texas anglers who have caught bass weighing 13 pounds or more this year.

These spawning-size “Legacy Class” bass have been donated live to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for its long-running Toyota ShareLunker selective-breeding program.

The program, designed to enhance state fisheries, began in 1986. The program record – also the current state record – is an 18.18-pound largemouth bass caught at Lake Fork in 1992.

Jansen’s catch is the 12th Legacy Class largemouth bass to have been landed in 2021. The heaviest was a 16.40-pound bass caught Feb. 19 at O.H. Ivie Lake.

That fish, landed by Joe McKay of Bussey, Iowa, is an O.H. Ivie Lake record and the largest bass caught in Texas in 22 years, according to the Runnels County Register.

Jansen told For The Win Outdoors that he was casting a Wacky Worm at about 3 p.m. when the giant Lake Travis bass dashed from its spawning bed and struck the lure.

“She was tired from spawning but she fought good for about 10 seconds, then I got her to the boat,” Jansen said.

Late February and March comprise the spawning season at most Texas fisheries and is the period when the heaviest female bass are typically caught.

The ShareLunker season, which also features lower divisions in which anglers receive recognition for catch-and-release efforts, runs through March 31.

Texas Longhorns Lose 2021 Three-Star Tight End’s Commitment

Lake Travis tight end Lake McRee has re-opened his recruitment after decommitting from Texas on Tuesday evening.

The Texas Longhorns lost a recruit from the 2021 class that was ranked fifth in the early going according to 247 composite boards. Lake Travis three-star tight end and former teammate of signee Hudson Card has announced that he is re-opening his recruitment per his twitter account Tuesday evening.

McRee didn’t play in 2019 after he tore his ACL per the report from Jeff Howe of 247. McRee currently holds offers from Alabama, Auburn and Arizona State among others. While losing the commitment is tough for the position, the Longhorns have a commitment from Juan Davis, three-star athlete out of Everman (Fort Worth, Texas) on their list of commits to the program. He plays tight end but is listed as an athlete on recruiting websites.

The Longhorns have eight offers on the table to other tight end recruits with Cane Berrong (Notre Dame) and Sam Hart (Ohio State) being off the table. McRee could still come back around after opening his recruitment back up but Texas won’t be lost at the position if he doesn’t.

Two quarterbacks sign with Texas

The first of two National Signing Days are taking place today. UT started the day out strong, locking up two of their top recruits.

The early signing period is finally here and the first of two National Signing Days are taking place today. The Longhorns started the day out strong, as they locked two of their top recruits.

Ja’Quinden Jackson from Duncanville, TX and Hudson Card from Austin, TX both signed their national letter of intent this morning, making their verbal commitment official. Both players are quarterbacks, each playing at Texas high school football’s highest division. Each of them are a four star recruits and they are currently the two highest signed players so far today, according to 247Sports.

Jackson is officially listed as an athlete according to 247Sports, but played quarterback at Duncanville High School. In his playoff semi final game, it is being reported that he tore his ACL and will be out for awhile.

Getting another quarterback out of the Austin area, Card went to Lake Travis High School. He has been committed to Texas since May of 2018 and has been wanting to be a Longhorn for most of his life.

Having depth at quarterback is always a good thing and Texas has that with these two signees. Sam Ehlinger is expected to come back for his senior season, but third string Roschon Johnson played running back all season. A quarterback room of Ehlinger, Casey Thompson, Johnson, Jackson, and Card will provide the Longhorns with depth for years.
