5 bold predictions entering Colts training camp

Here are five bold predictions for the Colts as they enter training camp.

Training camp awaits the Indianapolis Colts, and so do many new possibilities. With a revamped coaching staff and several new pieces from the draft and free agency, the Colts are ready to put it together.

Entering new seasons always brings more hope regardless of how a team may have finished the previous season. The Colts are a prime example of this considering their new additions at head coach and quarterback.

Colts’ 2023 training camp preview: Tight End

There will be plenty of competition in the tight end room at Colts training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to return for training camp at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield with their first practice being held July 26.

Before then, we’ll be previewing each position, giving our takes on the starters, position battles and projected depth chart entering camp under the new regime.

There are few positions on the roster that will include more competition than tight end for the Colts. While the order is somewhat clear, the team seemingly has roughly six or seven worthy players vying for a (likely) maximum of four spots.

The top 10 Colts players 25 and under

Taking a look at the top Colts who are 25 years or younger during the 2023 season.

The Indianapolis Colts have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL entering the 2023 season.

Through all three phases of the roster, not one player has reached his age-31 season yet. The closest is long-snapper Luke Rhodes, who turns 31 in December.

The youthfulness across the roster is obvious. The Colts brought in 12 new players via the 2023 NFL draft and a handful of others as undrafted free-agent rookies.

For this exercise, we considered players who will be 25 years old or younger throughout the 2023 season. They are ineligible if they turn 26 years old during the season, and we decided to exclude rookies simply because we haven’t seen them on the field yet.

With training camp right around the corner, let’s take a look at the top 10 players on the Colts roster who will be 25 or younger through the 2023 season:

11 winners from Colts offseason workout program

Taking a look at 11 winners from the Colts’ offseason workout program.

The Indianapolis Colts have roughly one month until the arrival of training camp, which is when the real competition for the final roster spots will take place.

Though we should be careful about how much information we take seriously during the spring practices, it never hurts to monitor the players who stand out in OTAs and minicamp. Jobs are not won in the spring, but the foundation for the competitions is being laid out.

Here are 11 winners from the Colts offseason workout program in 2023:

8 players to watch as Colts begin minicamp

Here are eight players to watch as the Colts begin mandatory minicamp.

The Indianapolis Colts are set to begin mandatory minicamp Tuesday at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center, which is the final time the team will be together before summer break.

There will be a lot going on during the three days at minicamp, and this will be a great time for players to make a strong impression while building some momentum for when they arrive back for training camp at the end of July.

Colts’ Kylen Granson confident entering big Year 3

Kylen Granson is looking to make that Year 3 leap.

The Indianapolis Colts tight end room is a bit of an enigma as we enter mandatory minicamp, but Kylen Granson has been one of the bright spots throughout the entire offseason workout program.

With so many pass-catchers missing time due to injuries this spring, Granson has stepped up in a big way. Entering a crucial Year 3, the former fourth-round pick has enjoyed what he’s put on the field thus far.

“I’m having a good spring. I’m having some fun out there. Going into year three, I feel like I’m taking more steps forward in my game and I’m seeing results. It’s just good to get back out there practicing again,” Granson told the media this week.

The SMU product isn’t the only player who feels he’s having a strong spring. His new head coach Shane Steichen did not shy away from praise during the early portion of OTAs.

Granson, who is competing for the H-back role, impressed his new head coach immediately.

“Gosh, he’s got great route-running ability. I’m really pleased where he’s at. He understands the game of football really well. He understands leverage, technique, all those different things – how to get himself open.” Steichen said May 25. “Really pleased with where he’s at and his route-running ability and also as a blocker.”

When it comes to working with a new head coach and offensive coordinator, there can be an adjustment period for certain positions, especially when a new offense is being installed.

However, Granson has enjoyed how involved the tight end position is in Steichen’s scheme.

“I think it’s definitely a little bit of both. Definitely utilizing our tight ends and utilizing all our skill positions,” Granson said. “I think Shane (Steichen) and Jim Bob (Cooter) have a really good plan for us as a team and I think it’s showing out there on the field.”

Granson isn’t without competition either. The Colts selected Will Mallory in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft, and he fits in a similar H-back role to Granson’s. Mallory, who was the fastest tight end at the NFL combine, has been dealing with a foot injury since rookie minicamp.

The Colts will need all the support they can get in the passing game for their rookie quarterback, and it seems Granson is taking the necessary steps to have a solid role carved out in 2023.

What we learned from Week 1 of Colts’ OTAs

Here’s what we learned from Week 1 of Colts OTAs.

The Indianapolis Colts concluded the first week of organized team activities (OTAs), officially getting full team work in for the first time this offseason.

While the players are running around in shorts and jerseys without pads or contact, there are still plenty of notes to take away from the practices. The spotlight will, of course, be on rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, but there are other storylines to keep an eye on as well.

With the first week of OTAs now under their belt, here’s what we learned about the Colts:

Colts’ Shane Steichen ‘really pleased’ with Kylen Granson

Kylen Granson has made quite the impression on his new head coach.

Indianapolis Colts first-year head coach Shane Steichen will be using the spring practices to evaluate the roster and several of the players who were already here from the previous regime, including tight end Kylen Granson.

A fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, Granson was known as a favorite selection of former head coach Frank Reich. It was made well-known that Reich was essentially pounding the table for Granson on Day 3 of the draft.

But how Granson’s game would fit within Steichen’s offense remained a bit of a mystery. At least, until Steichen got to see the SMU product play against the Colts defense for the first time at OTAs this week.

It’s safe to say Granson has made an early impression on his new head coach, showcasing some superb route running ability.

“Gosh, he’s got great route-running ability. I’m really pleased where he’s at. He understands the game of football really well. He understands leverage, technique, all those different things – how to get himself open,” Steichen told reporters Thursday. “Really pleased with where he’s at and his route-running ability and also as a blocker.”

The tight end room is one of the most crowded positions for the Colts going into training camp. Granson has been a mainstay at the position since being drafted, especially considering he fits the unique role of H-back while also serving as the move/flex tight end.

However, the Colts also added Miami’s Will Mallory in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Mallory might be the biggest threat to Granson’s role, especially considering how much Steichen liked the Hurricanes prospect during the pre-draft process.

Granson has always been an intriguing option due to his route-running ability, speed and impact after the catch. With the tight end room all competing against each other, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Granson continued to solidify his role as the move tight end.

Regardless, it doesn’t hurt that he’s made a strong impression on his new head coach early in the spring workouts.

6 most intriguing position battles to watch at Colts’ OTAs

Taking a look at the most intriguing position battles as the Colts begin OTAs.

The offseason program for the Indianapolis Colts kicked off last month and continues with organized team activities (OTAs) this week.

These activities happen in three phases (May 23-25, May 31-June 2, and June 5-8) and will consist of in-person meetings and dedicated classroom teaching designed to help players improve during the offseason.

It’s also significant because it marks the first time the Colts can run drills between the offense and defense even though no pads or contact are permitted.

As the players reconvene, the evaluation process of the roster begins. It’s a critical time for a young team such as the Colts.
