Ohio State safety Kye Stokes announces transfer destination

In case you missed it, another former Buckeye on the move has found a new home. #GoBucks

It’s the gift that keeps on giving this time of year. No, we’re not talking about endless gift cards or white elephant gifts that seem to make the rounds during the Christmas season, but rather, news from the transfer portal.

On Saturday, another former Ohio State football player who entered the transfer portal after the loss to Michigan made his intentions known. Safety Kye Stokes, a Tampa, Florida, native, announced his transfer to Cincinnati on social media.

Stokes committed to the Buckeyes as an under-the-radar, three-star prospect in the 2022 class, but he showed flashes of massive potential, most notably in the 2022 spring game. However, he never really got on the field. Instead, he fell behind Lathan Ransom, Josh Proctor, Sonny Styles and freshman Malik Hartford. After getting on the field modestly during his freshman season, Stokes appeared for just 10 snaps this past season.

Stokes will join former Ohio State defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs, who is the secondary coach for the Bearcats. The two built a relationship when Stokes was being recruited prior to Coombs being let go in 2021.

Good luck to Stokes. We hope to see him develop and find a more significant role down I-71.

Ohio State Football: Quick recruiting recap from this past weekend

It looks like they had a great time

The Buckeyes weren’t just busy on the field this weekend, they are active on the recruiting trail as well. Even though The Game didn’t go Ohio State’s way, it didn’t mean that the weekend was a complete bust. Ryan Day and his staff were active with plenty of recruits who were in Columbus and some that weren’t. Check out some of the action from over the weekend below.

Ohio State Spring Game: 3 Takeaways

Ohio State Spring Game: 3 Takeaways #GoBucks

Here we are and it is at halftime of the Ohio State Spring Game and it appears that Scarlet is owning Gray to the tune of 24-9, but as everyone is well aware this is just a scrimmage. The Spring Game was a bit more telling last year, but this year it looks to be a lot of the dame on offense only possible elevated, believe it or not.

On the defense side of the ball, a few familiar faces are making plays and a new face should be putting a smile on yours. I do wish we would see a bit more of this complex defense, but I understand it is only spring. Let’s dive into three noticeable notes.

Kye Stokes becomes first Ohio State freshman to lose black stripe this season

Kye Stokes is making an impression with teammates and coaches. #GoBucks

The Ohio State football team welcomed another into the brotherhood when Kye Stokes became the first freshman of the spring to lose his black stripe. Stokes is the second overall Buckeye to shed the black, joining Oklahoma State transfer Tanner McCalister.

Stokes is a four-star recruit from Seffner, Florida. He was not the highest-rated prospect coming in at No. 357 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but clearly, he’s making a name for himself and proving the rankings aren’t always the final say.

Listen to what the young man had to say about having his black stripe removed. Nothing but love for his scarlet and gray brothers.

“I mean, I just came in here ready to work man. I love ya’ll boys with all my heart. Go Bucks!”

Stokes has clearly made an impression on his coaches and teammates. It will be interesting to see where he fits in as a true freshman in Jim Knowles’ new defensive scheme.

Buckeyes Wire exclusive: 2022 commit Kye Stokes already gets the Michigan rivalry, eager to make impact at Ohio State

See what OSU commit Kye Stokes said about his hatred already for Michigan, why he chose Ohio State, and more. #GoBucks

Head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State football program have more or less put the finishing touches on the early signing period for 2022, bringing in 18 total commitments. There will undoubtedly be some more added to the class, but it’s another top-five group nationally that should keep the momentum going for a program that’s consistently competed for Big Ten and national titles.

We caught up with one of those commitments, four-star defensive back, and Tampa area native Kye Stokes, to get a feel for his recruitment and how he feels about becoming a Buckeye and continuing the tradition that’s been laid out before him.

First and foremost, it’s clear in talking to Stokes that OSU is getting one whale of a person, but the coaching staff did an excellent job of jumping on his recruitment well before other national programs figured out there was a kid with the size and talent down in the Tampa Bay area doing some pretty special things. Shortly after OSU offered and got the services of the 6-foot, 2-inch, 190-pounder, a bunch of other blue-bloods jumped on efforts, but in the end, Stokes stayed with his commitment and signed his National Letter of Intent on December 15.

We touched on several things including why Stokes chose Ohio State and stuck with it, how he feels about the weather in Ohio, and of course, asked about his thoughts about That Team Up North.

Let’s dive in …

Ohio State get commitment from three-star safety

Ohio State football landed its first commitment since February in a three-star safety from the state of Florida.

After a weekend that saw ten Ohio State players drafted and many others signing undrafted free agency contracts, Ryan Day and the coaching staff got more good news on Sunday. Three-star safety, Kye Stokes gave a verbal commitment to play for the Buckeyes.

Stokes hails from Seffner, Florida, and is the No. 56 rated athlete in the nation according to 247Sports. Although listed as an athlete, Stokes projects to play safety for the Bucks. He has great size at 6-feet, 2-inches, and speed to burn. Stokes clocked a 10.80 personal best in the 100-meter dash in a high school track meet.

Don’t let the three stars fool you, Stokes was a wanted man spurning the likes of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Oregon, and Notre Dame. And from the looks of his personal Twitter account, Stokes is stoked to be coming to Columbus.

Stokes is a nice pick-up for Ohio State and its first verbal commitment since February.

Notre Dame presents offer to two-way recruit Kye Stokes

Notre Dame wants this two-way athlete to play safety.

The two-way college football player pretty much has become nonexistent. By the time a player gets to that level, they’re expected to focus on one position. Kye Stokes from Armwood in Seffner, Florida, is listed as an athlete in just about every recruiting profile online. He’s a receiver on offense, but Notre Dame appears to want him as a safety based on him tagging Chris O’Leary and not Del Alexander in his tweet announcing that the Irish have made him an offer:

With one year to go before making the jump to college, Stokes now has received offers from 28 schools. These include Nebraska, Miami, Indiana, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, USF, UCF, Syracuse, Virginia, Wake Forest, Duke, Northwestern and Illinois. Whoever lands Stokes will get someone who is ready to play football and do so by running downfield whenever a ball is in the air. Anyone would be lucky to have someone capable of doing that on both offense and defense.
