Panthers release S LaDarius Wiley

The Panthers parted ways with S LaDarius Wiley, making him their sixth cut of the past 24 hours.

Even after sizing down the roster to Tuesday’s 80-man limit, the Carolina Panthers weren’t done chopping it up.

Per his agency, safety LaDarius Wiley has been released by the team. Wiley signed with the Panthers on Aug. 8 alongside defensive end Kendall Donnerson, who was also cut earlier today.

The undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt University broke into the NFL on a deal with the Tennessee Titans back in 2019. After not seeing any regular season action over his two years there, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound defensive back joined the Seattle Seahawks for a brief stay this offseason before being released in June.

Wiley and Donnerson account for two of the six players Carolina has now departed with over the past day. They’ve also moved out wide receiver Krishawn Hogan, guard Marquel Harrell and defensive tackles Walter Palmore and Caraun Reid.

Panthers cut pair of DLs to get to 80-man roster limit

The Panthers cut ties with DLs Kendall Donnerson and Caraun Reid on Tuesday morning, bringing them to the 80-man roster limit.

Despite having quite a bit of time left ahead of Tuesday’s roster cutdown deadline, the Carolina Panthers wasted almost none of it.

The team officially announced the departures of two more players this morning, defensive linemen Kendall Donnerson and Caraun Reid. As the Panthers prepare for their preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers this Friday, they are now in the clear with the league-mandated 80-man roster limit.

Donnerson was initially signed back on Aug. 8. The 6-foot-3, 249-pound end was a seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2018.

Reid, an eighth-year veteran, had come over to Carolina following stints with the Detroit Lions, the then-San Diego Chargers, the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The duo joins three other casualties from yesterday—wide receiver Krishawn Hogan, guard Marquel Harrell and defensive tackle Walter Palmore.

Panthers waive three players ahead of Tuesday’s 80-man limit

On Monday evening, the Carolina Panthers officially waived three players ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

On Monday evening, the Carolina Panthers officially waived three players ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline in getting to the league-mandated 80-man roster.

One of those early casualties was wideout Krishawn Hogan. The 6-foot-3, 217-pound receiver was signed after a tryout back in late July. He last played in an official game two seasons ago with the New Orleans Saints.

The recently-signed pair of linemen, guard Marquel Harrell and defensive tackle Walter Palmore, account for the other two cuts. Harrell was signed this past Thursday as the team was sifting through the open market for much needed offensive line depth. Palmore was added the day earlier, filling the 85th spot on the team after they made six moves to get down to 84 players prior to last week’s roster deadline.

Carolina’s roster now currently sits at a total of 82 men. They must depart with at least two more players by tomorrow.

Panthers sign big target at wide receiver after training camp tryout

The Panthers worked out a couple of wide receivers at the end of today’s training camp practice.

The Panthers worked out a couple of wide receivers at the end of today’s training camp practice. One of them will be joining the squad.

According to the team website, Carolina has signed wide receiver Krishawn Hogan.

Hogan (6-foot-3, 217 pounds) has bounced around a bit in the NFL, spending time with four other teams so far. He hasn’t seen much of the field, though – catching just one pass for four yards total.

The Panthers didn’t have any traditional red zone type receivers on their roster last year, which was one of many reasons why they struggled inside the 20.

To win a permanent roster spot, Hogan will have to beat out guys like Omar Bayless and Keith Kirkwood, who are the other big-bodied pass catchers in the mix.

Colts sign CB Christian Angulo to the practice squad

Colts make a roster move.

The Indianapolis Colts signed cornerback Christian Angulo to the practice squad and released wide receiver Krishawn Hogan and tight end Ethan Wolf from the practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.

Angulo was one of the players who worked out for the Colts last week before the Week 4 win against the Bears. Hogan was signed the practice squad last week after the injury to Michael Pittman Jr. landed him on the injured reserve list.

With the return of Trey Burton to the offense, the Colts free up a spot on the practice squad with the release of Wolf.

The Colts also may be down a cornerback as T.J. Carrie deals with a hamstring injury. He was inactive for the game against the Bears and it isn’t clear when he will be able to return.

Colts sign WR Krishawn Hogan to practice squad, release Chad Kelly

Colts add a WR and release Chad Kelly.

The Indianapolis Colts signed wide receiver Krishawn Hogan to the practice squad and released quarterback Chad Kelly from the practice squad, the team announced Wednesday.

With some injuries hitting the wide receiver room, the Colts brought in Hogan for a workout on Monday. He has experience working with the Colts in Frank Reich’s offense over the last few seasons so it shouldn’t take long for him to get up to speed.

As Parris Campbell is currently sitting on the injured reserve list and Michael Pittman Jr. is expected to miss some time with a leg injury, Hogan could provide solid depth on the practice squad.

Kelly was waived by the Colts at roster cuts and then signed to the practice squad. With Philip Rivers playing at a high level and with Jacoby Brissett and Jacob Eason behind him on the active roster, the Colts have some flexibility at the position to let Kelly go.

It will be interesting if the Colts bring Kelly back at all but for now, it seems the Colts will be rolling with three quarterbacks.

Colts brought in WR Krishawn Hogan for a workout

Colts bring in a familiar face for a workout.

The Indianapolis Colts brought in wide receiver Krishawn Hogan for a workout on Monday, per the league’s transaction wire.

After second-year wide receiver Parris Campbell opted to get surgery on his MCL/PCL injury and the team announced that rookie wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is expected to miss a few weeks due to a leg injury, it should be expected the Colts will look to work out and potentially bring in some new bodies.

Hogan was the only player to work out for the Colts on Monday, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if more are on the way this week, especially if Pittman Jr. winds up hitting the injured reserve list.

Hogan has plenty of familiarity with the Colts over the last few years. They signed him to the practice squad just before the 2017 season and he spent some time on the active roster before tearing his ACL.

Hogan spent most of the 2018 season either on injured reserve or the Colts practice squad. He spent the 2019 offseason with the team before being let go during roster cuts. Hogan grabbed his first catch in 2019 with the Saints but ended the season in injured reserve.

It’s unlikely Hogan would be signed to the active roster but could be a practice squad candidate, especially since it wouldn’t take long to get up to speed in the offense.

NFL roster moves: Saints waive undrafted rookie CB Tino Ellis

The New Orleans Saints waived cornerback Tino Ellis with an injury designation as the corresponding move to signing tight end Ethan Wolf.

[jwplayer VMIGC1sm-ThvAeFxT]

Multiple transactions related to the New Orleans Saints were listed on the daily NFL wire, most notably the release of rookie cornerback Tino Ellis. Ellis was waived with an injury designation, meaning that he will likely revert to the injured reserve list. He was absent at Monday’s practice session (the Saints were off Tuesday), and his release is the corresponding move for the Saints to sign tight end Ethan Wolf. Initially signed as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland, Ellis had long odds of making the roster.

Let’s recap what was going on with former Saints around the NFL. Cornerback Ken Crawley was signed by the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this summer, but was recently released, and visited the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent; NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Crawley is expected to sign with Arizona if he passes a physical and COVID-19 testing.

The Tennessee Titans signed wide receiver Krishawn Hogan after he participated in a recent tryout, making him the fifth player released by the Saints before training camp to catch on with a new team.

Unfortunately, Miami Dolphins linebacker Vince Biegel was sent to injured reserve after rupturing his Achilles in practice earlier this week. Biegel was swapped for Kiko Alonso in a preseason trade last summer, and he made the most of the opportunity — his first NFL sack came against Tom Brady, and he projected to start for Miami in 2020. Hopefully he will rebound.

One other throwback: pass rusher Jayrone Elliott impressed fans in some late-night preseason games back in 2018, and he also quickly gained a following in the short-lived AAF (San Antonio Commanders forever). He tried out for the Detroit Lions after appearing in five games with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. Maybe he’ll get another shot in Detroit.

Lions work out QB Trevor Siemian and several WRs

Chris Hogan is the most accomplished of the receivers

Now that the team is finally allowed to conduct workouts with free agents, the Detroit Lions are taking full advantage. On Friday the team welcomed former Broncos starting QB Trevor Siemian to Allen Park, as well as four wide receivers for him to work out with as an audition.

Siemian worked out with WRs Shelton Gibson, Keon Hatcher, Chris Hogan and Krishawn Hogan. None of the players were immediately signed.

Siemian was Denver’s primary starting QB in 2016-2017, leading the Broncos to a 13-11 record as a starter while completing 59.3 percent of his passes. He threw 30 touchdowns against 24 interceptions. He has played in just one game since, a start for the New York Jets in 2019 where his leg was broken in the first quarter.

Chris Hogan is the most notable of the wideouts. He’s a longtime New England Patriot with a very consistent production line. From 2014-2018, he caught between 34 and 41 passes every season (2014 was with the Bills). The 32-year-old spent 2019 in Carolina.

The other wideouts have combined for seven career NFL catches.

Saints roster cuts tracker, instant analysis ahead of training camp deadline

The New Orleans Saints began cutting their 90-man roster down to just 80 players, per NFL rules due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

[jwplayer Uh8BZCtF-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints began releasing players from their 90-man roster ahead of the NFL’s new Aug. 16 deadline to trim depth charts down to just 80 players, starting about an hour after our updated list of Saints players by jersey number went live (of course).

Teams will be allowed to hold small-group practice sessions without pads for the first few weeks of training camp, though work is largely limited to strength and conditioning drills due to the NFL’s rules and protocols during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. That gives them an opportunity to try out some things with newcomers, but not much.

So far, the released players are a mix of veterans who already have some game film to refer to and rookies who didn’t have much of a chance of making the team. Check back often for updates as the Saints continue to winnow down their roster:

  • WR Krishawn Hogan, via Amie Just of The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate. Hogan logged 83 snaps in eight games with the Saints last year after starting out on the practice squad, doing most of his work as a blocker. He caught his lone target to gain four yards before ending the season on injured reserve. He’s more of a known quantity than many of the receivers on the roster, so this could be a way for the Saints to give others a shot in practice.
  • CB Deatrick Nichols, via Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. Nichols signed with the Saints after the XFL dissolved earlier this year; he led the upstart professional football league with three interceptions as a member of the Houston Roughnecks, and seemed ready to compete for a roster spot as a contributor on special teams and in slot coverage. The Saints may feel his XFL game tape is enough to help them decide whether to bring him back later this year.
  • FB Ricky Ortizvia Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. Ortiz was a late addition to the Saints practice squad in 2019, suiting up for the regular season finale and their playoffs loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He ultimately played just 20 snaps on offense between those two appearances, catching one pass to gain eight yards. His release is a clear sign that veteran fullback Michael Burton won’t be challenged to start for the Saints.
  • DL Gus Cumberlander, via Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football. The big undrafted rookie out of Oregon fits the same height-weight profile as free agent pickup Margus Hunt, making him somewhat redundant with a cuts deadline on the horizon. A long shot to catch on with the Saints, Cumberlander should get an opportunity with another team as players around the league continue to opt out of the 2020 season.
