Former Packers draft pick Vince Biegel describes nightmare injury situation to start NFL career

Vince Biegel suffered two different injuries and required three surgeries before the start of his rookie season with the Packers in 2017.

It’s hard to imagine a more difficult start to a professional career in football than the one experienced by Vince Biegel, a 2017 draft pick of the Green Bay Packers.

Biegel, a fourth-round selection out of Wisconsin, suffered injuries during each of his first two days of rookie minicamp — just weeks after being drafted — and later required surgery on both of his feet, forcing him into a wheelchair to start his rookie season.

Biegel shared the harrowing experience through a Twitter thread on his official account.

According to Biegel, he broke his middle finger while re-routing a wide receiver on the first day of rookie minicamp in May. The injury required surgery. The next day, he returned to minicamp wearing a full club protecting his hand but then broke the fifth metatarsal in his foot during a pass-rush drill.

With surgery required on one foot, the Packers decided to fix both of his feet after the team discovered that Biegel’s other foot was likely to break during an MRI at the combine.

Two injuries, three surgeries and one wheelchair to get around during the opening weeks and months of a football career.

Biegel said he met his teammates — including Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews — while in a wheelchair and was “embarrassed and mortified” about his situation.

Biegel was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and missed all of training camp. He wasn’t activated off the PUP list until November. Biegel played in nine games for the Packers as a rookie but was released during final cuts the next August.

After departing Green Bay, Biegel played 14 games with the New Orleans Saints in 2018 and 20 games with the Miami Dolphins between 2019 and 2021. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the leadup to the 2022 season with the Baltimore Ravens and hasn’t been in football since.

Biegel, a Wisconsin native, said he “loved” his time with the Packers and wished it “could’ve lasted longer.”

Former Wisconsin LB works out for the Raiders

A former Wisconsin LB looking for a location for his seventh season

Former Wisconsin linebacker Vince Biegel is still trying to stick around in the NFL. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported earlier today he worked out with the Las Vegas Raiders ahead of the team’s third preseason game.

The former Badger has spent six years in the NFL after playing at Wisconsin from 2013-2016. He started with the Packers in 2017 as an undrafted free agent, signed with the Saints in 2018, was traded to the Dolphins in 2019 and stayed there through the 2021 season before his most recent stop in Baltimore.

Biegel has played in 43 games over those six years, totaling 81 tackles, 13 quarterback hits, 2.5 sacks and one interception. His best year came in 2019 in Miami when he started 10 contests.

Biegel, who turned 30 in early July, is now in search of stop No. 5 of his career for his seventh season.

Ravens sign CB, place OLB on injured reserve

The Ravens signed a cornerback and placed an outside linebacker on injured reserve on Monday

The Baltimore Ravens had to do plenty of roster shuffling over the course of the 2021 season with how many injuries the team went through. They finished the year at 8-9 after a six-game losing streak, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Baltimore has seen some positional groups need some infusion of depth so far in 2022, with cornerback and outside linebacker being two of them. On Monday the team announced that they made two roster moves, signing cornerback Daryl Worley while placing outside linebacker Vince Biegel on injured reserve with a torn achilles.

Worley is entering his seventh season in the NFL, and spent part of the 2021 season with the Ravens after injuries decimated the cornerback position. In his career he’s totaled 272 tackles and five interceptions.

Biegel was vying for a 53-man roster spot in Baltimore, but suffered a torn achilles in practice on Thursday. It’s the second torn achilles in three years for the veteran, and the third season-ending injury in three years. Baltimore could look to add more depth at the position before the year begins depending on the health of Tyus Bowser and David Ojabo.

Ravens HC John Harbaugh provides devastating injury update on OLB Vince Biegel

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh provided a devastating injury update on outside linebacker Vince Biegel

The Baltimore Ravens saw a few players leave practice on Thursday with injuries after being relatively healthy throughout the first few days of 2022 training camp. Fullback Ben Mason, center Tyler Linderbaum and outside linebacker Vince Biegel each couldn’t finish practice, and in Beigel’s case he was carted off of the field without putting any pressure on his leg.

After practice, Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh provided injury updates on multiple different players, and when talking about Biegel he provided devastating news, revealing that the veteran had suffered a torn achilles. It marks the first major injury of training camp for the Ravens, and happens to a player that was standing out over the first week of practices.

The injury marks Biegel’s second torn achilles in three years, as he suffered the same injury during 2020 training camp as a member of the Miami Dolphins. It’s a brutal development for Biegel, who was looking like he could potentially win a spot on Baltimore’s roster and even carve out a decent role on the team.

In the wake of the injury, the Ravens could look to add more outside linebacker depth either through trade or free agency.

Multiple Ravens players leave practice early on Thursday with injuries

Multiple Ravens players left practice early on Thursday

The Baltimore Ravens went through an extremely difficult season in terms of injuries in 2021. They lost many different key contributors for different amounts of time, including having some of their players seasons end before they began.

Baltimore has been relatively healthy throughout training camp so far, but on Thursday multiple Ravens players had to leave practice early in fullback Ben Mason, center Tyler Linderbaum and outside linebacker Vince Biegel. Mason and Linderbaum were able to get off of the field under their own power, while Biegel had to be carted off after not being able to put any weight on his leg.

The Ravens have been experimenting with different things in order to reduce injuries both in training camp and over the course of a long and grueling NFL season after what the organization went through in 2021. Health will be a key for the team in 2022, and hopefully they can keep their roster relatively injury-free this season.

Ravens LB Vince Biegel shares excitement for being in Baltimore on Twitter, praises organization

Ravens linebacker Vince Biegel expressed his excitement for being a part of the team on Twitter

The Baltimore Ravens knew that the 2022 offseason was a big one for them, and they’ve responded accordingly, adding multiple key players at many different positions. Some have signed big-money contracts while others are on prove-it deals, but the team will look to get big contributions out of all of their additions.

One of the players they brought in on the defensive side of the ball was linebacker Vince Biegel. The former Miami Dolphins defender appears to be very excited to be a part of the Baltimore organization, as he posted a picture of himself in purple and black on Twitter, praising the franchise for how they do things.

It seems as if Beigel will be competing for snaps at both outside and inside linebacker due to his positional versatility, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see the veteran get more run on the outside due to the team’s injury situation at that position. In four years of playing in the NFL, Biegel has amassed 81 total tackles and 2.5 sacks.

The Baltimore Ravens have become a team that’s known for their ability to scavenge around the free agent market and bring in underrated players on team-friendly contracts that end up playing at a high level. There have been countless examples of Baltimore finding talent in free agency, and they tend to stay active looking for contributors throughout the course of the offseason.

On Monday the Ravens signed linebacker Vince Biegel to a deal, adding to their depth at the position. The five-year veteran has experience playing both outside linebacker as well as inside linebacker, and with versatility being something that Baltimore values his signing doesn’t come as much of a shock.

Over the course of his career, Biegel has totaled 81 tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception. He has also played a vast amount of special teams, so his best shot to make the Ravens’ roster could come through his special teams contributions, which Baltimore is known to value immensely.

Biegel tore his achilles during training camp in 2020, causing him to miss the entire year. He came back in 2021, but only played in five games for the Dolphins and totaled just two tackles.

Overall, Biegel’s signing isn’t one that will move the needle for the Ravens in terms of their quest to win a Super Bowl, nor does he seem to even be a full lock to make the final 53-man roster. Even so, he’s a depth piece that can work his way onto the final team with a good showing in training camp, and can provide them with solid snaps at multiple positions.

Ravens sign LB Vince Biegel

The Baltimore Ravens have signed linebacker Vince Biegel

The Baltimore Ravens have added multiple free agents over the course of the 2022 offseason. Some have signed big contracts such as safety Marcus Williams and his five-year, $70 million deal, while others have been brought in for far less. However, each will likely be able to make a big impact in Baltimore in many different ways.

On Monday, the Ravens announced that they added yet another piece to their defensive unit in former Miami Dolphins linebacker Vince Biegel. The veteran has his fair share of experience at the NFL level, and is very familiar with Baltimore outside linebackers coach Rob Leonard, who spent the previous three seasons in Miami.
