61 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 61 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 61 jersey number.

The New England Patriots are officially 61 days away, which is less than two months, from their season-opening game against the reigning NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

We’re celebrating the start of the 2023 season by listing every Patriots player that has worn the No. 61 jersey during their time in New England.

Offensive tackle Marcus Cannon, who is the most recent player on the list, wore the number for 11 years. Cannon has three Super Bowl wins with the Patriots and an All-Pro nod in 2016. So he clearly had an exceptional career with the team.

And so did offensive guard Stephen Neal, who wore the jersey number before Cannon. Neal also won three Super Bowls with the Patriots after going undrafted in 2001. Both offensive lineman join a total of 10 players that have worn the jersey number.

Here’s every player that has worn the No. 61 for the Patriots (via Pro Football Reference):

9 former Patriots players who are still free agents

Here are the last remaining former Patriots players still listed as free agents.

After one week of free agency, the New England Patriots have managed to re-sign the vast majority of their pending free agents since the turn of the new league year.

They’ve also lost some key players as well, including wideout Jakobi Meyers and running back Damien Harris.

But not everyone has been picked up by another team yet. There are still some considerably noteworthy names swimming in the massive pool of free agency. For New England, that number has dwindled all the way down to 10 players left on the list.

Here are the former Patriots players still waiting to be signed in free agency.

22 pending free agents for Patriots in 2023 offseason

Here’s a list of the pending 2023 free agents for the Patriots.

It will be a crossroads for the New England Patriots in 2023 with many of their key contributors listed as pending free agents.

Things get even trickier with the team basically falling off a cliff, especially on the offensive side of the ball, in the 2022 season. They finished the year with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

The inevitable change that’s to come won’t just be with the coaching staff. This could be the year where we see some household names and legendary figures for the franchise say their goodbyes.

The good news is the team will have a lot of money to play with if they wanted to keep their current roster intact. According to Spotrac.com, the Patriots are ranked eighth in the NFL with $45,191,040 in projected 2023 cap space.

Here are the players currently listed with expiring deals in New England.

Patriots put veteran tackle on IR, bump 3 players to main roster

Patriots make several moves ahead of Week 9 meeting with the Colts

The New England Patriots’ offensive line was dealt a blow on Saturday with the team announcing veteran right tackle Marcus Cannon was being placed on injured reserve.

Cannon had been in concussion protocol leading up to the team’s Week 9 showdown with the Indianapolis Colts. It’s a disappointing turn of events for a Patriots team already playing without center David Andrews (concussion).

That’s going to heap a lot of pressure on Isaiah Wynn to show some consistency and avoid the backbreaking penalties he’s cost the team when on the field.

Along with announcing Cannon to IR, the team signed running back JJ Taylor to the active 53-man roster, while also elevating wideout Lynn Bowden Jr. and offensive lineman Kody Russey from the practice squad.

Taylor receiving a bump is a response to Damien Harris popping up on the injury report as questionable for Sunday’s game with an illness. Meanwhile. Russey provides depth along the offensive front, and Bowden is a gadget playmaker with legitimate big-play ability with the ball in his hands.

The Patriots have already ruled out Andrews, Cannon and DeVante Parker for the game.

Patriots likely to be down another offensive lineman vs Colts

Another blow for the Patriots’ banged-up offensive line.

The New England Patriots are dealing with injuries to their offensive line, and they could be without another player for their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Marcus Cannon was not present during the open portion of practice on Thursday afternoon. According to NESN’s Zack Cox, the veteran tackle is currently in concussion protocol and likely out against the Colts.

New England is already missing center David Andrews, who suffered a concussion against the Chicago Bears. He did not play in last Sunday’s game against the New York Jets.

Isaiah Wynn could start in Cannon’s place, and Yodny Cajuste would be the only backup for both the left and right tackle spots.

Indianapolis does have the ability to rush the passer. They have 19 sacks on the season, which puts them in the middle of the pack in the NFL. DeForest Buckner and Yannick Ngakoue are tied for the team lead with four sacks on the season.

Cannon’s injury will present New England with a challenge, as they look to win their second game in a row.

The Morning After: Youth injects life into the Patriots’ season

Patriots’ rookies instilling hope in the team, despite a second straight loss

The New England Patriots fell to the Green Bay Packers 27-24 in overtime at Lambeau field. It was a surprisingly close game without QBs Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer, who left early in the first half with a head injury.

Bailey Zappe took over for the Patriots in his first ever live game action and threw 10 completions for 99 yards and a touchdown. It was a conservative game for sure, but Zappe managed to keep the game close and play mistake-free football.

There were some situations where Zappe’s decision-making or awareness wasn’t on point, but that is due to lack of experience more than anything. Jones went to Alabama and played against some of the best players in the world before he even stepped into the NFL.

Zappe played lower FBS competition and was thrown into a game on primetime at Lambeau field against a future Hall of Fame QB in Aaron Rodgers. He may not have won the game, but he didn’t lose it, either.

Patriots elevate former three-time Super Bowl champion to main roster

The Patriots are elevating a familiar face to the main roster

Three-time Super Bowl champion Marcus Cannon is being elevated to the main roster roster, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

The move was reported on Saturday ahead of the team’s road trip to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers. Cannon was drafted by the Patriots with a fifth-round pick in 2011 and spent 10 seasons with the team before joining the Houston Texans in 2021.

However, he was signed back to the Patriots’ practice squad in mid-September. The team will now look to lean on his veteran presence as a backup for an offensive line group that just saw former third-round draft pick Yodny Cajuste go on injured reserve.

Cannon served as a solid tackle for former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and won three Super Bowls in the second-half of the team’s near two-decade run. Injuries have been an issue at the tackle position, especially for Isaiah Wynn.

So it pays to have a legitimate veteran with at least some familiarity with what the team is trying to do.

How Chargers can replace Rashawn Slater for remainder of 2022 season

The Chargers have a few options for the next man up.

The Chargers will be without star left tackle Rashawn Slater for the rest of the season after he suffered a ruptured biceps injury in the loss to the Jaguars.

Still very early in the season, Los Angeles will have to figure out a plan to have Justin Herbert’s blindside protected.

They can stick with what they have in Storm Norton as the starting left tackle, but yesterday’s performance exemplified that he is not ready for that responsibility as he allowed eight pressures on 25 pass-blocking snaps.

Or, the team could move Norton to right tackle and Pipkins to left tackle. Pipkins performed admirably well last season at left tackle, allowing just three pressures on 43 pass-block snaps.

While replacing Slater’s skill level in a pinch is impossible, there are a few ways the team can still get competency from the position.

If they choose to look at outside options, let’s take a look at how the Bolts can replace Slater.

WR Laquon Treadwell one of four practice players of the week for Patriots

The Patriots’ practice players of the week have been revealed

Former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Laquon Treadwell is making himself at home with the New England Patriots. Per ESPN’s Mike Reiss, the former first-round draft pick was practicing in a black jersey on Wednesday, which indicates he’s one of the team’s practice players of the week.

Treadwell was actually coming off a career-season with the Jaguars before signing to the Patriots’ practice squad in early September. He hauled in 33 receptions for 434 yards and one touchdown in a one-and-done year in Jacksonville.

It’s a good sign to see that he clearly hit the ground running when arriving in New England.

Tight end Matt Sokol, offensive tackle Marcus Cannon and defensive tackle Sam Roberts were also wearing the honorary black jerseys at practice.

Roberts flashed throughout the preseason and even did a fun interview with Patriots Wire’s Cam Garrity heading into the season.

Meanwhile, Cannon has a long history with the team as a three-time Super Bowl champion. He was signed to the practice squad following the Patriots’ season-opening loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Sokol, on the other hand, has an uphill battle with Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith on the main roster. It could take an injury for him to receive the call up to play in games, but the black jersey on his back says he’s prepared to do exactly that if given an opportunity.

Report: Patriots sign OT Marcus Cannon to practice squad

The Patriots signed Marcus Cannon to their practice squad on Tuesday.

The New England Patriots signed offensive tackle Marcus Cannon to their practice squad on Tuesday, per Pro Football Focus’s Doug Kyed.

Cannon was a key piece of the Patriots from 2011-2020. He started in 69 games for the team during that timeframe and was a part of three Patriots championship teams. He was a fifth-round pick for New England in 2011 and played collegiately at TCU.

He could be a depth piece for a Patriots line that held their own against a formidable Miami Dolphins defense on Sunday. They only allowed two sacks on the afternoon.

Cannon has the ability to provide insurance for the Patriots, as they continue to tinker with the line. At the very least, this gives New England a player that is familiar with the organization and can bring championship pedigree to a jelling team.
