Here’s a tip for you: these easy cupcakes are a great craft to do with kids!

We pulled out a favorite kid’s cookbook, knowing parents are already planning for Spring Break activities. We love this recipe from Barbara Beery’s series of children’s cookbooks.

The recipe for “Sunshine Cupcakes” comes from Batter Up: Delicious Desserts, and is based off a simple vanilla cake mix. The recipe advises substituting apple juice for the water, but otherwise following box directions. Add white frosting with a little sunny yellow food coloring (and a drop or two of red) added and you get a sunshine cupcake that is as fun to eat as it is to make.

One of the things we love about Delicious Desserts is that it comes with a child-sized cloth chef’s toque that delights kids who are ready to grow their culinary skills. Kids as young as five can break an egg, stir a pot, and decorate a cupcake, after all. Give it a try–just be sure to have plenty of M&Ms, sprinkles, and pretzel sticks on hand!

The cookbook is getting hard to find, but you can still get another in the series, called Sensational Snacks (Barbara Beery, Barbara Berry. Gibbs Smith Publishers, $19.95 (68pp) ISBN 978-1-58685-365-5).

Saints QB Derek Carr and his family draw cheers at Pelicans-Thunder game

Saints QB Derek Carr and his family drew cheers from the home crowd in New Orleans at Saturday night’s Pelicans-Thunder game, via @DillySanders:

Newly-signed New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr took his family to the New Orleans Pelicans game on Saturday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Smoothie King Center. They were able to sit courtside, and were welcomed by the home-crowd fans with an uproar of applause.

Carr and his sons Dallas, Deker and Deakon along with daughter Brooklyn and wife Heather have been given the superstar treatment by the Saints and Pelicans organizations for his first day in the city.

The Pelicans would go on to lose the game to the Thunder by a score of 110-96, giving him a realistic outlook on the current state of the team. Maybe he can make another trip when Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram return.

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler named ‘NFL Slimetime NVP of NVPs’ by Nickelodeon

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler won Nickelodeon’s NVP of NVPs award.

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was named Nickelodeon’s NVP of NVPs on Wednesday. The award represents the highest honor that the children’s network bestows upon NFL players and was won by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow last season.

Ekeler became eligible for the award by winning the NVP vote in Week 4 for his electric three-touchdown performance against the Houston Texans. His efforts in 2022 helped lift the Chargers to their first playoff appearance since 2018, and despite falling short in their Wild Card loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ekeler was a key part of the team’s success all season.

Despite a lackluster running game as a whole this past season, Ekeler provided plenty of value to the offense with his versatile skill set this season.

Ekeler finished the 2022 regular season as the franchise’s single-season reception leader (107), surpassing Keenan Allen’s previous record of 106. He topped the 900-yard mark on the ground for the second consecutive campaign.

Hopes are high that Ekeler and the Chargers will be able to make good on this prestigious award by showing even more of a spark next season.

Best golf clubs for kids in 2023

Whether for a first timer or a junior golf champ these kids golf clubs will be a hit for the little one in your life.

Golf is one of the fastest growing sports among children. With programs like the First Tee helping to introduce the game and tours like U.S. Kids and AJGA giving kids a taste of competitive golf, there is plenty of opportunity for your kids to fall in love with the silly game we cherish.

There’s no better way to introduce the sport than through their first set of clubs. Club sets on the youth market come in a variety of sizes based on average age and size. Make sure to measure your kiddo before buying a set to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.

Whether you’re knocking it around the back yard, hitting balls on the driving range or playing competitive rounds, a proper fitted golf club is crucial for their enjoyment.

Luckily for you, Golfweek has curated a list of some of the top sets for kids from across the web. Still not finding what you’re looking for? Check out our kids gift list from this past holiday season.

First, remember these tips when taking your newest playing partner out on the course or practice range for the first time:

Baby steps. There’s no need to rush onto the course. Take time to develop fundamentals and good practice habits.
Relax. Chances are you’re not sparking the career of the next Nelly Korda or Tiger Woods. There’s no need to put all that pressure on your kiddo.
Pick a pro. Have your child pick a couple of players to watch and follow. Bonus points if you can go see them in person!
Have fun! That’s what golf is all about, right? Fun and enjoyment should come before anything else for all golfers, but especially for juniors.

If you’re looking to knock out the rest of your holiday shopping, check out all of our Holiday Gift Guides including men’s apparel, women’s apparel and golf shoes.

10 Best Rockabye Baby! lullaby covers (the infant playlist every new parent needs)

The baby playlist you didn’t know you needed

As a new dad who is constantly drenched in exhaustion and no longer capable of multitasking, middle of the night bottle feedings have become one of life’s biggest challenges.

It’s not the actual preparation of the bottles that make things tough (pro tip: make the bottles before you go to sleep), but the simple task of waking up itself. After that the whole routine basically runs on muscle memory.

I cuddle my newborn, change her diaper, grab a bottle and toss on our favorite playlist to help keep her relaxed — at least I’m assuming it’s her favorite playlist, too, since she can’t really tell me otherwise at six weeks old.

But even if the playlist is just for me (it is) I’m in love with baby music. Because rather than play those dull and creepy old lullabies, I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of Rockabye Baby! covers.

For the non/new parents, Rockabye Baby! covers artists of all generations and genres, turning pop, rock, synth and hip hop songs into perfectly minimalist and instrumental lullabies.

They are as cute as they are fantastic to the point where sometimes I’ll just play them instead of the actual version of the song I want to hear.

My current playlist has more than 70 songs and runs for more than four hours, but I keep finding myself going back to the same handful of songs. So it’s only right to share what I’ve come to cherish during these 3 a.m. sessions.

Youth on Course expanding discounted green fees for kids to all 50 states

Youth on Course offers children green fees of $5 or less, with the rest subsidized by private and corporate donors.

Youth on Course, a California-based non-profit that helps cover the cost of golf for children, plans to be active in all 50 states by the end of January.

Youth on Course has taken off since branching out of California in 2014 and ’15, and it now offers programs in cooperation with other state and regional golf associations. The program also offers opportunities for internships, college scholarships and caddie programs.

Children who join Youth on Course are eligible to receive green fees of $5 or less at participating courses. The organization said it subsidized 400,000 rounds in 2020, up from fewer than 100,000 in 2015.

In 2020, nearly 1,500 golf facilities in 38 states and Canada participated in the program. During a virtual call Wednesday, Youth on Course operators said that will expand to all 50 states soon.

Youth on Course updated its visual branding in 2020.

Most of the money used to subsidize rounds is raised through individual donors and corporate partners. Youth on Course then negotiates with facilities to set a price for a round and covers any costs over the $5 the kids pay.

The growth to all 50 states is fueled in part by partnerships with Allied Golf Associations, PGA sections, management companies and a new deal with GolfNow, the online tee time booking service. Through a new integration, GolfNow’s technology will allow Youth on Course members to book rounds directly through the Youth on Course app.

GolfNow also is giving regular golfers the opportunity to round up their booked green fees to the next highest dollar, with proceeds going to Youth on Course.

Youth on Course’s research shows that cost is the toughest barrier to entry for many children. The mission is to provide all kids the chance to learn the game on a real course. The organization said 33 percent of its members are youth of color, 25 percent are female, 51 percent are aged 14 to 18, and 42 percent of rounds are played with an accompanying adult.

Watch: Cam Jordan mercilessly dusts a few kids in a Pro Bowl foot race

New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan accepted the challenge to race some kids at the 2020 Pro Bowl, but he didn’t hold back.

[jwplayer RmGPIvcb-ThvAeFxT]

There’s things you don’t do, like choosing to tug Superman’s cape, or pull the mask off the Lone Ranger. You also don’t challenge New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan to a race.

That’s what a few children and young teens discovered at an event ahead of the 2020 Pro Bowl, when they lined up for a sprint against the 6-foot-4, 287-pound sack artist. Some NFL stars would take the opportunity to let the kids enjoy the spotlight for a moment by throwing the race. But Jordan treated it like a competition.

At least he gave them a second’s head start. But by the time Jordan burst out of his stance, it was no contest, leaving all three of his challengers in the dust.

Later, Jordan justified that decision by explaining it as a motivational tactic: he wanted to help these young athletes to “strive and stride to get faster,” leaving a lasting memory of what it’s like to compete against one of the best football players on the planet. Time will tell if the lesson sticks, but for now we’ve got one entertaining video from the charismatic defensive end.
