The 17 weirdest things that happened during the Nickelodeon Super Bowl 58 broadcast, including lots of slime

Hear us out. The Nickelodeon broadcast was all kinds of weird, but it worked.

Nickelodeon’s special broadcast of Super Bowl 58 was all over the place. Football fans were in for a wild ride as SpongeBob, Patrick Star, Dora the Explorer and the rest of the crew broke down the game as only Nickelodeon can do.

Nickelodeon got things going early with special news that they were starting the broadcast with a special rendition of Sweet Victory by SpongeBob Squarepants. (If you haven’t seen it, it’s glorious.) But then things became unhinged quickly when an early fumble prompted a Christian McCaffrey roasting session from Patrick Star and SpongeBob.

Here are some of the best moments from the broadcast:

CBS unveils Super Bowl 58 rendition of ‘Sweet Victory’ from SpongeBob SquarePants

“AND IT’S SWEEEEET, SWEEEEET, SWEET VICTORY, YEAH!”

With the broadcasting rights to Super Bowl 58, CBS is taking full advantage of all its assets.

Ahead of the game on Sunday evening, the network unveiled a new version of the iconic David Glen Eisley’s “Sweet Victory” from the 2001 SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Band Geeks”.

In the episode, SpongeBob and friends perform at a battle of the bands during the so-called “Bubble Bowl.”

This isn’t the first time the song has been incorporated into the Super Bowl. In 2019, it was used to introduce rapper Travis Scott during the halftime show. However, this time, CBS used the full song while interspersing crowd shots, players from the game and more than a few jellyfish.

It’s meant to market the Nickelodeon broadcast of the game, which has been tabbed as “Super Bowl LVIII Live from Bikini Bottom.” The song will also be played to open the broadcast.

While it’s going to be all business on the field between the Chiefs and the 49ers, it’s clear CBS is trying to lean into some silliness, as well.

Why SpongeBob’s Sweet Victory kicking off Nickelodeon’s 2024 Super Bowl broadcast is a big deal

Everything you need to know about SpongeBob’s version of “Sweet Victory” for Nickelodeon’s Super Bowl broadcast.

SpongeBob SquarePants is arguably the most famous animated cartoon character for children ever. That’s why it makes sense that Nickelodeon is building its Super Bowl broadcast this year around the giddy yellow sponge and all his friends in Bikini Bottom. The kids love them!

But if you’re, say, a parent who is unfamiliar with some of SpongeBob’s adventures, you might be wondering why he’ll be singing “Sweet Victory” — a Bob Kulick and David Glen Eisley original — before the Nickelodeon Super Bowl simulcast begins and why it’s a big deal.

It’s not that complicated. It’s just a reference to one of the more memorable episodes in the long-running series.

During a 2001 episode of the show, SpongeBob and friends are tasked with winning a massive battle of the bands. When it appears they might lose, SpongeBob’s band surprisingly breaks out an explosive rendition of “Sweet Victory” that bookends the episode on an uplifting note. It just so happens that it’s played during an football game.

Plus, back in 2019, there was a petition for Maroon 5 to perform the song during their halftime show. Although they didn’t play it, Travis Scott got a SpongeBob intro to his cameo.

With Nickelodeon broadcasting a, you know, football game in real life, it made perfect sense to have the world’s most famous yellow sponge belt out “Sweet Victory” once again.

Watch: Trevor Lawrence gets slimed after winning the Nickelodeon NVP award

Watch Trevor Lawrence get slimed after winning NVP.

Trevor Lawrence had himself a great week last week and it led to the earning of multiple prestigious weekly awards.

While the AFC Offensive Player of the Week is an awesome one, there’s one that feels a bit more important. That of course, is the Nickelodeon’s NVP (Nickelodeon’s Valuable Player).

In a win against the Tennessee Titans, Lawrence completed 75% of his passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He was active on the ground, taking five carries for 17 yards and two rushing touchdowns. It was an awesome performance from the former Tiger and it earned him a sliming.

Check out the video below of Lawrence getting slimed after winning NVP.

Watch: Trevor Lawrence gets slimed for winning Nickelodeon’s NVP award

Trevor Lawrence got a surprise sliming from his teammates for winning NVP honors.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence can add NVP to his list of career accomplishments.

On Wednesday, Lawrence was named the Nickelodeon Valuable Player of the week for his four-touchdown day against the Tennessee Titans. While the performance earned him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the third time in his career, his first ever NVP award meant a surprise sliming at practice, courtesy of offensive linemen Brandon Scherff and Luke Fortner.

Nickelodeon’s NFL Slimetime has given NVP honors since the 2021 season. Pass rusher Josh Allen is the only other Jaguars player to win the award after recording a sack, interception, and fumble recovery against the Josh Allen-led Buffalo Bills in 2021.

Lawrence threw for 262 yards and two touchdowns against the Titans. He added another two rushing touchdowns.

So far in the 2023 season, Lawrence has 2,382 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. On Sunday, he became the third youngest quarterback in NFL history to eclipse 10,000 career passing yards.

WR Mike Evans wins Nickelodeon’s “NVP” award for Week 2

Guess Mike Evans really is All That.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver [autotag]Mike Evans[/autotag] has earned what is perhaps professional football’s most prestigious award.

Well, maybe not, but it’s still pretty cool. Nickelodeon awards their patented “NVP” award (Nickelodeon Valuable Player) each week, and for Week 2, the trophy came to Tampa Bay to be award to Evans. Evans is the third Buccaneer to win an NVP award — quarterback Tom Brady and running back Leonard Fournette both won one in the 2021 season.

Evans wins the trophy off of a stellar game against the Chicago Bears, catching for 171 yards and a touchdown. Evans is currently fourth in the NFL in receiving yards with 237, the most receiving yards Evans has had in his first two games through his whole career.

Typically, the NVP winner is slimed as per Nickelodeon tradition, but Evans passed on that honor to another Bucs rookie. You can see who he chose below:

Noah Eagle to fill in on NBC play-by-play for Notre Dame-Navy

Prepare for a different sound Saturday.

There has been much criticism about the Notre Dame NBC broadcasting team of Jac Collinsworth and Jason Garrett. Many Irish fans would rather new blood had been brought in this season, and they were disappointed to find out nothing had changed. Well, the broadcasting team will in fact be slightly different for at least one game. Chicago Sun-Times sports media columnist Jeff Agrest has tweeted the following regarding the broadcast for the game against Navy:

Noah Eagle, the son of Ian Eagle, is one of the most talented young broadcasters in the industry. Having previously called both the NFL and college football for Fox, CBS and even Nickelodeon, NBC scooped him up for its new Big Ten Saturday night broadcasts. He also does radio radio play-by-play for the Los Angeles Clippers.

If Irish fans want to keep watching college football after Irish games during the day, this will be a nice preview of what they can expect, at least on NBC.

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler named ‘NFL Slimetime NVP of NVPs’ by Nickelodeon

Chargers RB Austin Ekeler won Nickelodeon’s NVP of NVPs award.

Chargers running back Austin Ekeler was named Nickelodeon’s NVP of NVPs on Wednesday. The award represents the highest honor that the children’s network bestows upon NFL players and was won by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow last season.

Ekeler became eligible for the award by winning the NVP vote in Week 4 for his electric three-touchdown performance against the Houston Texans. His efforts in 2022 helped lift the Chargers to their first playoff appearance since 2018, and despite falling short in their Wild Card loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ekeler was a key part of the team’s success all season.

Despite a lackluster running game as a whole this past season, Ekeler provided plenty of value to the offense with his versatile skill set this season.

Ekeler finished the 2022 regular season as the franchise’s single-season reception leader (107), surpassing Keenan Allen’s previous record of 106. He topped the 900-yard mark on the ground for the second consecutive campaign.

Hopes are high that Ekeler and the Chargers will be able to make good on this prestigious award by showing even more of a spark next season.
