Ian Book, Kenny Stills inactive for Week 15’s Saints vs. Buccaneers game

Ian Book inactive again for Week 15’s Saints vs. Buccaneers game

The New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced their lists of inactive players for Sunday night’s game during Week 15, with the Saints benching healthy players including cornerback Ken Crawley, wide receiver Kenny Stills, and rookie quarterback Ian Book. That’s in addition to several injured starters who were preemptively ruled out.

But New Orleans did welcome a couple of important players back to the lineup. All three of last week’s COVID-19 absences are active in defensive end Cameron Jordan, running back Mark Ingram II, and wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Tight end Adam Trautman is dressed out as well after being activated from injured reserve.

It’s going to be tough to work around the losses of starting offensive tackles Ryan Ramczyk and Terron Armstead, but maybe these reinforcements are enough to help turn the tide at Tampa Bay. Here’s the list from each team:

Saints bring back Kenny Stills after losing Deonte Harris, Ty Montgomery

Saints bring back Kenny Stills after losing Deonte Harris and Ty Montgomery, with Lil’Jordan Humphrey injured:

Kenny Stills was spotted at New Orleans Saints practice on Friday, after having been released on Tuesday. But the wide receivers corps took a series of hits in the days since Stills was waived: Deonte Harris was suspended for three games, Ty Montgomery landed on the COVID-19 reserve list after a positive test, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey was a limited participant in Thursday’s practice due to a sudden hamstring injury.

It’s unclear yet whether Stills was signed to the 53-man roster (which has several vacancies with defensive end Cameron Jordan and running back Mark Ingram II also on the COVID-19 list) outright or instead added to the practice squad, which was at its full 16-man capacity as of Friday afternoon. But the Saints cut and re-sign players all the time, most recently defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, so it wouldn’t be difficult to slot Stills in on the practice squad.

We’ll know more once Friday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire is released. For the curious, here are the wide receivers available for Sunday’s game with the New York Jets:

  • Tre’Quan Smith (active roster)
  • Marquez Callaway  (active roster)
  • Easop Winston Jr. (practice squad)
  • Kawaan Baker (practice squad)
  • Malcolm Perry (practice squad)
  • Kevin White (practice squad)
  • Kenny Stills (TBD)

Saints waive Kenny Stills, sign Kevin White to practice squad

Saints waive Kenny Stills, sign Kevin White to practice squad

It was obvious changes needed to happen in the New Orleans Saints receiving corps, and the first big move was the departure of Kenny Stills. The Saints waived the veteran wideout on Tuesday after a series of bad games; if this is for Stills in 2022, he’ll end up with 5 catches on 22 targets, having struggled to establish a connection with any of the three different quarterbacks to target him at various points this season.

Additionally, the Saints brought back Kevin White to their practice squad. White was previously waived after experiencing similar issues, and he’s totaled 1 reception on 5 targets this season. There’s little reason to think he’ll improve on Stills’ performance, but the Saints are almost out of options.

With Deonte Harris (the team’s leading receiver) out for the next three games following an NFL suspension, it’s going to fall to Marquez Callaway, Tre’Quan Smith, Ty Montgomery, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey to carry the load. White is also joined on the practice squad by Kawaan Baker, Easop Winston Jr., and Malcolm Perry.

The New Orleans Saints kept it close with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night thanks to big performances from Kwon Alexander and Marshon Lattimore, who were both rated highly in the postgame grading from Pro Football Focus. Here are the best and worst game grades from PFF:

Kenny Stills promoted to Saints’ 53-man roster; latest moves for Week 5

Breaking down the roster moves made by the Saints ahead of Sunday’s matchup with Washington:

The New Orleans Saints completed a couple of final tweaks to their roster before flying out for Sunday’s game with the Washington Football Team. Here’s what you need to know from Saturday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire:

The New Orleans Saints added a couple of players to the mix for this week’s game roster, bringing up two veterans from the practice squad while activating another from injured reserve, per the daily NFL transactions wire.

That puts them at 52 of 53 spots filled (practice squad elevations don’t count towards it), suggesting more players are working towards returning from injured reserve in the days ahead.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants added to their too-thin receiving corps by calling up John Ross from injured reserve. New York is down two of its top three receivers (Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton) so he could lend a hand.

Here’s the latest Saints roster moves:

There are a ton of narratives developing ahead of Sunday’s game between the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants, with some reputations on the line — Jameis Winston and Jason Garrett certainly must be feeling the pressure. But others could see their star continue to rise with a big game. Here’s who I’m watching out for this week:

The New Orleans Saints activated defensive backs Marshon Lattimore and C.J. Gardner-Johnson active against the New England Patriots, but the real story here is wide receiver Chris Hogan dressing out against his old team (we’re on Revenge Game Watch, guys).

Jokes aside, the Saints did deactivate wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to make room for Kenny Stills after promoting him from the practice squad. And the Patriots are without starting right tackle Trent Brown, so hopefully Saints left end Cameron Jordan can take advantage of that and get his first sack of the season. Kenny Stills promoted from Saints practice squad for Week 3 vs. Patriots

Here we go: the New Orleans Saints have elevated wide receiver Kenny Stills to their active roster ahead of their Week 3 kickoff with the New England Patriots, indicating he’ll play on Sunday. The receiving corps has underperformed through the first two weeks, with at least 15 individual wide receivers and several tight ends across the league outgaining them.

Anything Still has to offer could help one of the NFL’s worst position groups. With him in the mix, the other Saints wide receivers available on gameday include Marquez Callaway (3 catches for 22 yards), Deonte Harris (3 catches for 81 yards), Ty Montgomery (2 catches for 8 yards), Lil’Jordan Humphrey (1 catch for 27 yards), and Chris Hogan (2 catches for 26 yards). Rookie Kawaan Baker, Easop Winston Jr., and Kevin White remain inactive on the practice squad. Tre’Quan Smith is eligible to return from injured reserve on Monday, if healthy, and Michael Thomas will be out of action on the physically unable to perform list until the Week 6 bye.

Stills made an immediate impact in New Orleans after they drafted him out of Oklahoma in 2013, averaging 3.1 receptions for 50.7 receiving yards per game through 31 appearances. He continued to play well after being traded to the Miami Dolphins (pacing 2.6 catches and 40.7 yards across 63 games). though his level of play dipped the last two years with the Houston Texans (2.2 receptions for 30.7 yards per game). In his career he’s averaged 2.6 receptions per game and 40.7 receiving yards per game.

New Orleans also elevated center Austin Reiter from the practice squad, though it’s unlikely he replaces Cesar Ruiz at the pivot point. Instead look for him to be the gameday backup in case an injury forces them to shift the lineup. The Saints have elevated Reiter for the maximum two-game limit already this year, so he’ll have to be signed onto the active roster if they want him to dress for another game. With starting center Erik McCoy still on the mend, that could be likely — though it’s worth noting McCoy avoided a three-week stint on injured reserve and could return next week against the New York Giants if healthy.
