Multiple fights break out at Panthers, Patriots joint practice

A pair of brawls broke out in the first of two joint practices between the Panthers and Patriots.

The Carolina Panthers got quite combative last summer in their contentious joint practices against both the Indianapolis Colts and the Baltimore Ravens. It seemed almost with every outing came at least a scuffle, scrap or skirmish.

Well, this year may be no different for these pugnacious Panthers.

One heck of a brawl broke out in the first of two practice meetings this week between Carolina and the New England Patriots. The big brouhaha resulted in the ejection of three players—Panthers safety Kenny Robinson and Patriots wide receivers Kristian Wilkerson and Kendrick Borune.

Ethan Hurwtiz of Patriots Country caught a bit of the action.

Multiple accounts from various reporters depicted a scene in which players were squaring up, throwing punches and falling to the ground. It has also been noted that the Panthers have been more “juiced up” than their counterparts this morning.

Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, Round No. 2 commenced shortly thereafter. That dustup resulted in two more ejections—one of Panthers defensive tackle Phil Hoskins and the other of Patriots offensive lineman James Ferentz.

Ding ding.

Multiple players ejected after fight breaks out at Patriots-Panthers joint practice

Things got ugly on the practice field between the Patriots and Panthers.

The New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers are meeting on Tuesday for a joint practice, and it didn’t take long for things to turn into a full-on Royal Rumble.

Multiple players were kicked out of practice after a fight broke out on the field. A sideline play with Patriots receiver Kristian Wilkerson being tackled out of bounds led to some back-and-forth chatter before all hell broke loose.

Punches were reportedly thrown during the skirmish. Patriots wideout Kendrick Bourne and Panthers defensive back Kenny Robinson were involved in the incident as well.

Bourne, Wilkerson and Robinson were all kicked out of practice.

But that wasn’t the end of it.

Another fight occurred after the initial one that led to more players being ejected.

Coach Bill Belichick was not happy with the extracurricular activities on the field. He even went as far as pulling the team together for a “long huddle” in an effort to diffuse the situation.

Ex-XFL player Kenny Robinson with TD off blocked punt for Panthers

Kenny Robinson from the XFL to the end zone for the Panthers

Kenny Robinson took a chance and decided to skip playing another year at West Virginia, opting for the ill-fated XFL.

The DB has also found a place on special teams for the Carolina Panthers and wound up in the right place Sunday, picking up a blocked punt and running into the end zone in the third quarter.

Linebacker Frankie Luvu blocked the punt.

Robinson was called up from the practice squad on Saturday.

Panthers get first blocked punt for a touchdown since 1998

For the first time in 356 games, the Panthers returned a touchdown off a blocked punt.

A blocked punt ultimately ended up dooming the Carolina Panthers in their 21-18 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday. So they must’ve took some notes.

Down 12-10 to the Minnesota Vikings with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Panthers special teams unit stepped up to finally make a big play of their own. Linebacker Frankie Luvu came through, unblocked, to ignite a sudden spark in an otherwise dead afternoon.

The fourth-year backer blocked the attempted punt from Minnesota’s Jordan Berry on a snap that fired off from their own 24-yard line. Safety Kenny Robinson would then scoop up the loose ball at the 4-yard line and take it into the end zone for six.

Robinson’s cleanup helped give the Panthers a 17-12 lead at the 6:49 mark of the third quarter. The score was also the franchise’s first touchdown return off a blocked punt since 1998, which equates to a 356-game span.

Panthers place P Joseph Charlton on injured reserve

The Panthers have placed P Joseph Charlton, who has averaged a league-low 35.8 net yards per punt, on the injured reserve.

In a game-altering blunder, Carolina Panthers punter Joseph Charlton had a late fourth-quarter attempt blocked by the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday. Now, he’ll have to sit with that sour taste in his mouth for at least the next three weeks.

Charlton has tried his last punt for a while, as the Panthers have placed the boot on the injured reserve. The 24-year-old had been dealing with a back injury entering the week.

The 2021 sophomore season has not been that kind to the 6-foot-5 punter in terms of production either. Charlton has netted just 35.8 yards per attempt this year, the lowest average amongst all punters.

As a result, the team has signed another punter, Ryan Winslow, to the practice squad. Winslow, who also stands at 6-foot-5 (the Panthers may have a type), has racked up some mileage over his three-year professional career, with stints in Chicago, Arizona, Green Bay and a stop in the Alliance of America Football.

Safety Kenny Robinson, additionally, was signed up to the active roster to fill Charlton’s spot.

Panthers Week 1 injury update: WR Shi Smith remains only player listed

The Panthers are still almost at a full-go for Sunday’s season opener against the Jets.

Two days and two (almost) entirely clean bills of health for the Carolina Panthers. Not a bad start to the 2021 season, huh?

As was the case on Wednesday, wide receiver Shi Smith was the only player of the active 53-man roster listed on the Week 1 injury report. The rookie is still working back from a shoulder injury he sustained in the preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Once again, Smith was off to the side working the stationary bike, but did have a helmet handy this time around. He is, however, still expected to miss Sunday’s opening matchup with the New York Jets.

In another encouraging sign, safety Kenny Robinson was not included on Thursday’s report. The practice squad member was listed as a limited participant yesterday due to a knee injury.

The same goes for fellow practice squad player Rodney Smith. The running back was also noted as limited from the previous session.

Panthers Week 1 injury report: WR Shi Smith is only player listed

The Panthers’ first injury report of the 2021 regular season is a pretty clean one.

The Carolina Panthers were particularly methodical about how they handled player workloads this summer. Today, the results proved how much of a relative success that was.

When speaking with media members following the team’s practice on Wednesday, head coach Matt Rhule said there is only one player on the active 53-man roster that is currently on the injury report. That man is rookie wideout Shi Smith.

Smith sustained a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter of the preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Although the initial mood regarding the fall was rather gloomy, the setback was determined not to be as serious as the team first let on.

The sixth-round pick, who is expected back sooner rather than later, did not participate in today’s practice. He was seen working the stationary bike off to the side, instead.

Practice squad player Kenny Robinson was also noted as a limited participant with a knee injury.

Panthers release veteran CB Rashaan Melvin

In a bit of a surprise, the Panthers released CB Rashaan Melvin during their second wave of cuts on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers couldn’t follow up the shocker the New England Patriots delivered earlier in the day. Who can? But they did break out a little surprise of their own.

In their second wave of cuts on Tuesday, the team released cornerback Rashaan Melvin. Melvin, now on his seventh NFL season, was expected to provide the Carolina secondary with some veteran depth amongst an otherwise young and thin group.

That, barring the final cut coming at the expense of the position will leave the Panthers with their 2021 first-round pick Jaycee Horn, Donte Jackson, Keith Taylor, Stantley Thomas-Oliver III and Myles Hartsfield at corner. A.J. Bouye will also join the pack after he serves the remaining two games of his six-game suspension.

Alongside Melvin in these latest departures goes safety Kenny Robinson, running back Reggie Bonnafon and long snapper Thomas Fletcher. The move of Fletcher to the season-ending injured reserve effectively clinches the long-snapping job back to J.J. Jansen, who will be entering his 13th regular season with the organization.

Catch up and keep up with all the cuts here as the 4 p.m. ET deadline approaches.

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey heads ‘inactives’ vs. Steelers

Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey, as expected, will not start in tonight’s preseason finale vs. the Steelers.

This should come as no surprise, so hopefully you’re not disappointed, Carolina Panthers fans. But running back Christian McCaffrey will not see any action in tonight’s preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Again, this isn’t flying in out of left field. Head coach Matt Rhule was quite clear regarding his superstar rusher’s status, saying he wants to “save those hits for the season” instead of adding any preseason mileage.

Per the team, a handful of other players will not suit up due to injury. That group includes running backs Trenton Cannon, Reggie Bonnafon and Rodney Smith, linebacker Josh Bynes and safety Kenny Robinson. This could be a damaging hit for Robinson, in particular, who was vying for a spot in the secondary before leaving last week’s contest with a knee injury.

Defensive end Marquis Haynes was also spotted out of uniform. He had just ditched the arm sling he sported following a shoulder injury earlier in the week.

The expected starters for tonight, which should look very much like Week 1’s lineup, are as follows:

QB: Sam Darnold
RB: Chuba Hubbard
WR: DJ Moore
WR: Robby Anderson
TE: Dan Arnold
TE: Ian Thomas
LT: Cameron Erving
LG: Pat Elflein
C: Matt Paradis
RG: John Miller
RT: Taylor Moton

DE: Brian Burns
DT: Derrick Browns
DT: Da’Quan Jones
DE: Morgan Fox
SLB: Shaq Thompson
MLB: Jermaine Carter Jr.
WLB: Haason Reddick
CB: Donte Jackson
CB: Jaycee Horn
SS: Jeremy Chinn
FS: Juston Burris

Panthers injury updates: DE Marquis Haynes out of sling, limited in practice

Although he was still limited, Panthers DE Marquis Haynes ditched his sling ahead of Monday’s practice.

Just four days ago, Carolina Panthers defensive end Marquis Haynes walked out at training camp in Spartanburg, S.C. with a sling draped over his right shoulder. Well, he must’ve left it there.

Back at home in Charlotte, the fourth-year pass rusher hit the scene sans sling while wearing a limited practice jersey. Haynes, almost straight off a standout performance in Indianapolis, sustained a shoulder injury last week and has been held out of action on more of a precautionary basis.

Safety Kenny Robinson, who left Saturday’s preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens with a knee injury, was also amongst those not given the green light on Monday. He, fellow safety Sam Franklin, running back Rodney Smith and wide receivers Keith Kirkwoord and Trenton Cannon were all no-go’s. Additionally, defensive end Haason Reddick and Tommy Tremble were not present.

Star wideout DJ Moore did, however, return to a complete session. He was pulled from the joint workout last Thursday after falling on his right side, injuring his back. Moore dressed, but did not play on Saturday.
