Former Texas WR Kelvontay Dixon transfers to SMU

Dixon becomes the fourth Longhorn to transfer to SMU this offseason.

Another Longhorn will be changing from burnt orange and white to red and blue.

Third-year wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon announced on Sunday he will continue his collegiate career at SMU.

Dixon becomes the fourth Longhorn to transfer to SMU this offseason. Wide receiver Joshua Moore committed to the Mustangs on Jan 24 while defensive back Chris Adimora and defensive end David Abiara decided less than a week ago.

The speedy wideout only caught 12 passes for 176 yards and one score in his Texas career. Dixon’s quickness certainly flashed at times for the Longhorns but he never found the consistency needed to crack the starting lineup. Dixon fits SMU’s offensive scheme well and provides him the chance to see the field early.

Texas’ wide receiver room is still in good shape, led by freshman All-American Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington.

A look at Texas’ WR depth chart after the addition of Isaiah Neyor

Texas’ offense will have talented options at wide receiver in 2022.

Brennan Marion was hired from Pitt to help boost wide receiver development and recruiting.

Marion has hit the ground running upon his arrival in Austin with the flip of Wyoming transfer Isaiah Neyor from Tennessee.

Neyor showed his big-play ability with his 878 yards and 12 touchdowns a year ago at Wyoming.

Texas needed a proven commodity to pair opposite Xavier Worthy and they got exactly with the addition of Neyor.

Wide receiver production took a major hit when Jordan Whittington went down with an injury midway through the 2021 season. A trio of Worthy, Neyor and Whittington has the potential to be explosive.

Whoever ends up winning the quarterback battle next season will have a plethora of weapons to throw to.

Here is a look at some of the notable wide receivers on Texas’s roster:

Four Texas players that can step up in Jordan Whittington’s absence

Keilan Robinson?

Texas received news that only adds more salt in the wound after Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma.

Star receiver Jordan Whittington is set to have surgery on his clavicle after going down in the fourth quarter against Oklahoma. Head coach Steve Sarkisian told the media on Monday that there is no timetable for the injury, but it is one that will likely keep him out for an extended amount of time.

Unfortunately, Whittington has been unable to avoid the injury bug during his collegiate career up to this point, as he played in the same amount of games this season (six), as he did in the first two years combined. The sophomore out of Cuero, Texas was poised to have a big season if he could stay healthy.

He is currently tied with Xavier Worthy for the most catches on the team with 24, and is second on the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. He is clearly a huge loss for the Longhorns, as the receiver group has struggled at times to be consistent.

Whittington was quarterback Casey Thompson’s most reliable option on third down, as he had nine third down receptions on the season. The Longhorns lost a good one, and will need someone to step up to fill the void.

Here are four players that can step up and possibly fill the shoes of Whittington.

Keondre Coburn compares Texas WR Xavier Worthy to Tyreek Hill

Keondre Coburn had a great comparison for Texas’ new speedy wide receiver Xavier Worthy.

Texas defensive lineman Keondre Coburn was the ultimate teammate, wingman and hype man at the Big 12 media day as he had nothing but great things to say about his squad.

Coburn has always been known for being a quote machine when it comes to supporting his teammates. He did just that on Thursday in reference to one of Texas’ new wide receivers.

Steve Sarkisian swayed four-star wide receiver Xavier Worthy to the Forty Acres after he had already signed his national letter of intent with Michigan.

The speedy wide receiver requested his release from Michigan on April 15, and Sarkisian wasted no time in offering him a scholarship that day. Worthy committed to Texas roughly a week later, and Sarkisian added the fastest wide receiver in high school to an already solid 2021 recruiting class.

Worthy has reportedly been getting rave reviews throughout team practices and is expected to be a difference-maker this season. Coburn wasted no time complimenting the speedy receiver at Big 12 media day on Thursday.

He compared Worthy to one of the fastest players in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill, otherwise known as the cheetah.

Having Worthy and Kelvontay Dixon’s speed at his disposal, Sarkisian will have a field day beating teams vertically and getting these two in space. The Longhorns offense will have a much more explosive vibe in comparison to Tom Herman’s lackluster offense.

Hudson Card among three of Texas’ second-year players to watch for

A big part of determining Steve Sarkisian’s early success will come from the 2020 class. Here are three second-year players to look out for.

Until the 2021 class, Tom Herman did an excellent job on the recruiting trail, rebuilding what was considered a rather poor roster. He pulled off back-to-back No. 3 rated classes in 2018 and 2019, followed by the No. 8 class the next year.

A big part of determining Steve Sarkisian’s early success will come from Herman’s final full recruiting cycle in 2020. They may not have been the highest rated on the 247Sports composite but may prove to provide the most NFL talent Texas has seen in a while.

Gerry Hamilton of On3sports and Inside Texas provided a list of three second-year Longhorn players to watch going into this season. A quarterback and two of his receivers feature, an offensive specialty for Sarkisian.

Here is Hamilton’s list:

Hudson Card may seem like the obvious one, competing for the starting quarterback job with Casey Thompson. There is reason to believe the Austin native will end up winning, even though he was with the second-team offense during the Orange and White.

He is more of a stereotypical pocket passing quarterback Sarkisian loves. Being quick and accurate in the RPO game, while also having the arm strength to deliver deep balls.

The two wide receivers mentioned bring two different dynamics.

Omeire was expected to be a breakout star during his true freshman season but tore his ACL in fall practice. Now that he is fully healthy, the former four-star recruit is expected to burst onto the scene with Sarkisian. Speed may not be Omeire’s forte but he may be the best pure receiver on the team.

Quite the opposite is true for Dixon. Speed is the name of the game for the Carthage native, showing it against Colorado in the Alamo Bowl. If during fall camp, Dixon can show he is ready to play, watch out.

Texas Longhorns Football: Five fresh faces who could break out in 2021

Texas has an abundance of talent on its roster waiting to shine. Here are five fresh faces who could break out for Texas in 2021.

Steve Sarkisian and his coaching staff are not going to be the only fresh faces on the sideline this fall. Texas’ depth chart has the potential to look a lot different than during the Alamo Bowl against Colorado. Continue reading “Texas Longhorns Football: Five fresh faces who could break out in 2021”

Tom Herman provides injury update before season opener against UTEP

Ahead of the matchup against UTEP, head coach Tom Herman met with the media and provided an injury update for the Texas Longhorns.

For the first time in 288 days, Texas will be playing a home game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. UTEP will be coming to town on Sept. 12, with the Miners already having a game under their belt.

For the Longhorns, practice has been underway since Aug. 7 and some injuries will carry over into the season opener.

Starting with the good news, linebacker Ayodele Adeoye was cleared to return to practice on Sunday. The junior broke his foot in the offseason and was recovering from surgery. After returning to practice, he suffered a minor shoulder injury that now appears good to go.

Adeoye is going to be an important part of the linebacking core, providing more depth for a thin group. Juwan Mitchell is going to start at middle linebacker for now but Adeoye could challenge the former junior college transfer.

Moving towards players who currently have injuries, the Longhorns’ offense is going to be without two role players on Saturday.

Freshman wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon and offensive lineman Isaiah Hookfin are listed as doubtful. Dixon, a 6-foot-0, 180-pound speedster, was expected to provide big play ability from the slot. He will now have to wait to make his Texas debut until conference play begins.

Isaiah Hookfin injured his shoulder recently but was expected to return in time for the start of the season. It appears that he needs just a bit more time. It is unclear at this point on if that will be a lingering issue. Fellow lineman Reese Moore will need a knee scope per the report, much like he did last preseason.
