Giants sign LB Jaylon Smith to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed LB Jaylon Smith, who spent four weeks with the team last year, to the practice squad.

The New York Giants are reuniting with linebacker Jaylon Smith.

Smith’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, revealed on Monday evening that the veteran will return to the Giants. He will join the team’s practice squad.

Smith was a second-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2016 NFL draft. However, he spent his rookie season on injured reserve after tearing two ligaments in his knee while playing in the Fiesta Bowl as a member of Notre Dame.

In 2017, Smith returned to the field and has not missed another game due to injury since. He’s appeared in 74 games with 58 starts, recording 536 tackles (330 solo, 21 for a loss), six forced fumbles, 16 QB hits, 10.0 sacks, 21 passes defensed and two interceptions.

Smith was named to the Pro Bowl in 2019.

After being leapfrogged on the roster by Micah Parsons early in 2021, the Cowboys released Smith. He went on to sign with the Green Bay Packers in early October, appeared in two games and then was released in November. The Giants picked him up in mid-December.

Smith appeared in four games (two starts) for the Giants, recording 19 tackles, one QB hit, one sack and one pass defensed.

In order to clear room for Smith, the Giants released offensive lineman KC McDermott from the practice squad.

Giants sign OL KC McDermott to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed veteran offensive lineman KC McDermott to their practice squad.

After losing veteran offensive lineman Max Garcia to the Arizona Cardinals last week, the New York Giants had an open spot on their practice squad to fill.

On Monday evening, they plugged that void with the addition of offensive lineman KC McDermott.

The 26-year-old McDermott was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie out of Miami in 2018. He spent his entire four-year career with the Jags before being released as a part of final cuts in late August.

McDermott has appeared in 16 career games with one start, although most of his snaps have come on special teams. When he has been on the field offensively, his reps came at right guard.

Over 46 career snaps on offense, McDermott has allowed one pressure, one QB hit and was called for one penalty (declined). He earned a 66.3 overall grade and a 77.2 pass protection grade from Pro Football Focus in 2021.

Former Jaguars OL KC McDermott worked out for Buffalo Bills on Friday

McDermott had been with the #Jaguars since 2018 before getting cut last week.

After getting the short end of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ roster cuts last week, offensive lineman KC McDermott is moving on from Duval County in search of his next contract. According to the NFL’s transactions wire, he worked out for the Buffalo Bills on Friday after playing in the preseason with other Jaguars backups. He looked to be in contention for a 53-man roster spot in Jacksonville before the team waived him last Monday.

McDermott had been with the Jaguars since 2018 when he joined the team as an undrafted free agent. After starting one game last season, his outlook for 2022 seemed to be heading in a positive direction, but after his termination, he’ll need to catch on somewhere with a big need on the offensive line to have the chance to see any action this season.

At 26 years old, McDermott has never played professionally outside of Duval County and is a relative unknown to general managers around the league. He played capably at the collegiate level at the University of Miami but wasn’t considered a top-flight prospect when he declared for the NFL draft in 2018. Any team that picks him up will consider McDermott to be a work in progress, though if his presence on Jacksonville’s roster has been any indication, he remains a worthy project for any offensive line coach.

It wouldn’t be out of the question for the Jaguars to make a move to bring McDermott back later this year. As offensive line depth is a key factor to a quarterback’s long-term protection over the course of a season, McDermott could effectively become an extra backup for Jacksonville as a free agent if he is unable to secure a spot with another team. He will be familiar with the system head coach Doug Pederson has in place and should be hungry for a shot to make a good impression should his number ever be called for an opportunity to play.

Jags place DL Jay Tufele on IR, sign OL KC McDermott from practice squad

With their trip to Seattle coming up, the Jags made a few roster moves Friday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a few transactions Friday before their game against Seattle by placing rookie defensive lineman Jay Tufele on injured reserve and filling his spot by signing offensive lineman K.C. McDermott.

Tufele recently had hand surgery after sustaining an injury during warmups before the Jags took on the Miami Dolphins. The Jags made him active for just the second time this year, but he had to sit out of the game due to the injury. On Monday, Jags coach Urban Meyer said Tufele would be “back in a few weeks,” but it appears they now feel he needs at least three weeks of recovery time.

As for McDermott, he was on the Jags’ practice squad before being signed. The team also promoted the fourth-year player against the Dolphins, but now he’ll be an active roster backup for the team as they are without Brandon Linder (MCL and high-ankle sprain) and A.J. Cann (who the Jags say won’t return this season with an MCL injury).

McDermott has played in eight total games for the Jags since going undrafted to them in 2018 out of Miami (Fla.). He saw five snaps on special teams for the Jags in his last appearance against the Dolphins, so that number could increase now that he’s signed to the active roster.

Jags make several roster transactions before Week 10 game vs. Packers

The Jags made several elevations from their practice squad in preparation for the Green Bay Packers.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a wide variety of roster transactions Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. That included the elevation of four players from their practice squad.

With linebacker Dakota Allen and receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. being ruled out on the final injury report, the Jags utilized their two standard elevation spots on Joe Giles-Harris and Terry Godwin.

Giles-Harris has spent most of his Jags tenure on their practice squad after joining them last season as an undrafted free agent. In 2019, he was activated for five games, registering a bulk of his snaps on special teams. He also was active for the Jags’ last game against the Houston Texans where he registered more snaps on special teams.

As for Godwin, this will be his first activation from the practice squad since joining the Jags last season.

The Jaguars also decided to activate offensive lineman KC McDermott and safety Doug Middleton from their practice squad.

Sunday’s game will mark McDermott’s third time on the active roster as he participated in the Jags’ games against the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals. He registered a few special teams snaps in the process but didn’t see the field for any offensive plays.

Middleton, on the other hand, will be participating in his fourth game of the season after playing in the Jags’ games against the Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, and Houston Texans (Week 9).

Lastly, the Jags activated safety Andrew Wingard from injured reserve and kicker Chase McLaughlin from the commissioner’s permission list.

Wingard’s addition isn’t a surprise after he was designated to return from IR earlier in the week. He started in three games this season for the Jags before going on IR before Week 6’s game against the Detroit Lions and will return with 25 tackles and a pick to his name.

As for McLaughlin, he was signed to the roster earlier in the week to replace Josh Lambo, who is out for the season with a gluteus medius injury. McLaughlin, a second-year player, will come into his tenure with the Jags with a 78.3% field goal conversion rate (18-of-23) and a 100% extra point attempt rate (26-of-26). He previously spent time on the active rosters of the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers.
