The Cincinnati Bengals got quite active on the waiver wire and free agency on Wednesday.

On the same day news broke that the team wanted to sign former first-round pick O.J. Howard, the Bengals also claimed tight end Devin Asiasi on waivers.

The Bengals claimed two other players on the waiver wire, too: Guard Max Scharping and defensive tackle Jay Tufele.

Scharping was a former second-round pick by Houston in 2019 who has had up-and-down play over the last few years. But his arrival might signal some interesting things for former second-round pick Jackson Carman.

A former fourth-rounder in 2021, Tufele only played four games in Jacksonville last year and is part of the big turnover there. The Bengals wanted more depth after letting guys like Tyler Shelvin go.

5 roster cuts the Vikings should target

The 53-man roster deadline has passed and there are some roster cuts that the Vikings should target

With it being roster cutdown day, 27 players per team – 864 total – see their NFL dreams take an unfortunate detour. Some of them will be claimed on waivers by another team while others will make the practice squad. Some will stay free agents hoping for a chance or a shot at the USFL or XFL this upcoming February.

When initial 53-man rosters become finalized at 3 pm central time, they won’t stay intact for very long. Waivers will be very busy Wednesday afternoon at that same 3 pm central time.

With the Vikings already making a litany of roster moves, they will be among the teams that are active in both the waiver and trade markets. Here are five players they should target.

Snap counts from Jags’ 24-13 preseason loss to the Browns

Here are the snap counts from the #Jaguars’ preseason game against the Browns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars fell to the Cleveland Browns Friday, dropping their preseason record to 0-2. Even with the loss, though, the positive part about the game was that their starters shined and got the Jags off to a 13-0 start in the first few series of the game.

However, it was the Jags’ backup players who played most of the game Friday. With roster cuts coming up on Tuesday, the snap counts for these players especially are important as they are the players who are being looked at to trim the roster down from 90 to 85. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the team’s overall snap counts for all three sides of the ball to gauge who made the most of their opportunities.

Thesesnaps were calculated by NFLGSIS.

Offense

  • Receiver Jeff Cotton Jr. led the Jags in offensive snaps. However, he wasn’t able to register a catch and was targeted three times. That may be a bad sign for the young receiver with cuts coming up on Tuesday.
  • Receiver Tim Jones had the second-highest snap count at the receiver position. He also had the most special teams snap counts when looking at the whole offense, which help his chances to stick around. Jones took better advantage of the offensive opportunities he received than Cotton and brought in five catches for 42 yards. That gave him a receiving yards total that was only under Zay Jones (47) on the night.
  • Quarterback Jake Luton received the most snaps when looking at the Jags’ signal-callers. However, he had a rough night and was 12-of-21 for 92 passing yards and one pick. This could make the Jags consider Luton for Tuesday’s cuts and it would allow them to get a better look at undrafted rookie EJ Perry.
  • Jawaan Taylor and Walker Little entered this game in competition with each other for the starting right tackle job. There wasn’t much of a difference in their total counts as Taylor had 27 and Little had 24. Taylor ended up getting the start and had a Pro Football Focus grade of 59.7, while Little had a 63.3.
  • Rookie center Luke Fortner once again got to start on Friday. He received 25 reps on the night.
  • Brandon Scherff took the field for his first game as a Jaguar Friday. Like Fortner, he received 25 snaps on the night.
  • Quarterback Trevor Lawrence also took the field for his first game this preseason. Like Fortner and Scherff, he received 25 reps.
  • Travis Etienne retuned to the field for the first time since last preseason and received 22 snaps.

Defense

  • Linebacker Chapelle Russell led the Jags in defensive snaps with 33. He also received a sizable amount of special team reps (nine). Russell is familiar with the defensive scheme as he played under defensive coach Mike Caldwell in Tampa in 2020, so receiving the most reps on Friday isn’t shocking.
  • Rookie seventh-round cornerback Montaric Brown received the most snaps when it comes to first-year players. He took advantage of that on the stat sheet and led the defense in tackles with five overall.
  • Second-year nose tackle Jay Tufele had a solid night. He was tied for fourth in snap counts with 27. He fell just below Brown in total tackles with four and was one of the Jags’ highest-graded defensive players, according to PFF (76.0).
  • Former first-round pick K’Lavon Chaisson was among the players who received 20 or more snaps (20), and he led the defense in special teams snaps with 13, too.
  • Rookie linebacker Chad Muma got to start for a second consecutive week with Devin Lloyd out. Just like Chaisson, he had 20 snaps, too. His 12 reps as a special-teamer were the second highest on defense. That’s important because he’s expected to see a significant amount of special teams snaps in the regular season.
  • Like most of the starters, interior linebacker Foye Oluokun only saw nine snaps as a starter. Friday’s game marked his first taking the field with the Jags after signing a three-year deal with them in free agency.
  • Rookie No. 1 overall pick Travon Walker saw only nine reps like the other starters, but he made his presence known in the process. He only had one tackle, but his 73.3 PFF score was one of the highest on defense.

Breakout candidates: 4 second-year Jaguars set to make a jump in 2022

The Jags’ 2021 draft class received a good bit of experience last season, and as a result, several members from it should take a noticeable jump in 2022.

While the 2021 season was a disaster for the Jacksonville Jaguars, one of the positives to come from it was that members of their rookie class ended it on a positive note. The hope is that those same players can take another step in 2022 under new coach Doug Pederson, as the team looks to at least double their win total.

Several players from the Jags’ rookie class got a ton of experience last season, and that should set them up for success in 2022. The class also will be getting a member back in running back Travis Etienne, who didn’t participate in the regular season due to having a season-ending foot injury in the preseason.

As we await what should be an exciting series of training camp practices, here are four players from the Jags’ 2021 rookie class who should make a second-year jump and propel the team to a better season:

(Note: We didn’t include Etienne for the reason mentioned above, or Walker Little because it’s unclear if he will start)

WATCH: Jags DL get in a beach workout during pre-training camp break

The #Jaguars DL has continued to get some work in together as the countdown to training camp continues.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars on their pre-training camp break, several players have started a new workout routine as they count down the days to their return to the field on July 24. Some players have even decided to work out in groups, like the defensive line, who will need to take another step in 2022.

On Thursday, Rise and Grind Training gave the fans a preview of the work the defensive line has been putting in during the break by posting a video of the unit getting in a beach workout. The players seen in the video were Josh Allen, Dawuane Smoot, Davon Hamilton, Jay Tufele, and Adam Gotsis.

The defensive line has worked with Rise and Grind Training in the past before, but our readers may recognize them from our story in May where we revealed that Devin Lloyd had been working out with them after he was drafted.

As for the defensive line, they should take a step forward this year as the group  of aforementioned players have been together for at least two seasons. The front office added some new faces to the unit, too, signing names like Arden Key and Foley Fatukasi in free agency, and spending the No. 1 overall pick on Travon Walker.

Last season, the Jags’ defense was ranked 20th overall and 23rd against the rush. Most believe those figures will improve this year if the defensive line takes a step under new defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell.

Jags designate rookie DT Jay Tufele to return from injured reserve

The Jags could get a boost to their defensive line in the next couple weeks, as Tufele is eligible to return to the active roster.

Jacksonville will be getting some additional depth in an area where it’s very much needed. Rookie defensive tackle Jay Tufele, who has been on the injured reserve with a broken hand since Oct. 29, is designated to return and could theoretically be back as soon as this week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Tufele appeared in Week 5’s game against the Tennessee Titans, and he was supposed to be active for the game in London against the Miami Dolphins, but he broke his hand in pregame warmups and had to undergo surgery. Now, he is eligible to return to the active 53-man roster.

According to Big Cat Country’s Demetrius Harvey, Tufele was spotted at practice this past week sporting a cast and doing conditioning off to the side, but not much else. That would seem to indicate that Tufele isn’t especially likely to play on Sunday against Atlanta. The Jags have 21 days to activate him.

Tufele was expected to take on a bigger role before his injury with Taven Bryan struggling, but after Bryan’s improved play in recent weeks, Tufele may not see as much playing time. Regardless, the team has high expectations for Tufele, who was drafted in the fourth round with the 106th overall pick this past spring.

Jaguars Week 8 injury report: Campbell, Hamilton ruled questionable vs. Seahawks

The Jags ruled defensive starters Tyson Campbell and DaVon Hamilton questionable for Sunday’s game, while Jay Tufele was ruled OUT due to going on IR.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled two defensive starters questionable Friday for Week 8’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Those players were cornerback Tyson Campbell (toe) and defensive lineman DaVon Hamilton (shoulder).

Both players were limited Friday after also being limited on Wednesday and Thursday. Hamilton just surfaced on the injury report after the Jags came off their bye week, while Campbell hasn’t played in a game since Week 4’s meeting against Cincinnati.

Coach Urban Meyer told the media that he expected Campbell to be back, so his situation may be a bit more clearer than Hamilton’s. However, if Campbell can’t go, it’s possible the Jags play veteran Nevin Lawson in his place again as they did against Miami. If Hamilton is out the Jags could roll with a starting trio of Malcom Brown (taking a majority of the nose tackle reps), Roy Robertson-Harris, and Adam Gotsis.

There was also one other player to surface in the status column and that was rookie defensive tackle Jay Tufele, who didn’t practice all week after recently having hand surgery. He injured his hand in warmups in the Jags’ last game, which occurred two Sunday’s ago in London against the Dolphins. However, his DNP designation was expected as the team placed him on IR Friday afternoon.

All of the other players on the injury report were full participants and will play Sunday. That list of names included guard Ben Bartch, center/guard Tyler Shatley, linebacker Myles Jack, and long snapper Ross Matiscik.

The Seahawks ruled three players questionable and one out. Running back Alex Collins (groin), guard Damien Lewis (shoulder), and left tackle Duane Brown (illness) were the players ruled questionable. Safety Marquise Blair (knee) was the player ruled out. To get more details on their situations, head over to Seahawks Wire.

Jags place DL Jay Tufele on IR, sign OL KC McDermott from practice squad

With their trip to Seattle coming up, the Jags made a few roster moves Friday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made a few transactions Friday before their game against Seattle by placing rookie defensive lineman Jay Tufele on injured reserve and filling his spot by signing offensive lineman K.C. McDermott.

Tufele recently had hand surgery after sustaining an injury during warmups before the Jags took on the Miami Dolphins. The Jags made him active for just the second time this year, but he had to sit out of the game due to the injury. On Monday, Jags coach Urban Meyer said Tufele would be “back in a few weeks,” but it appears they now feel he needs at least three weeks of recovery time.

As for McDermott, he was on the Jags’ practice squad before being signed. The team also promoted the fourth-year player against the Dolphins, but now he’ll be an active roster backup for the team as they are without Brandon Linder (MCL and high-ankle sprain) and A.J. Cann (who the Jags say won’t return this season with an MCL injury).

McDermott has played in eight total games for the Jags since going undrafted to them in 2018 out of Miami (Fla.). He saw five snaps on special teams for the Jags in his last appearance against the Dolphins, so that number could increase now that he’s signed to the active roster.

Jaguars Week 8 injury report: LB Myles Jack upgraded to full participation

Jaguars LB Myles Jack was upgraded to full participation on the injury report Thursday, but his status marked the only change on the Jags end.

The Jacksonville Jaguars only had one change on their injury report Thursday and it was a significant one. Starting linebacker Myles Jack, who is expected to return from a back injury Sunday, was upgraded to full participation after being a limited participant in practice Wednesday.

Jack sustained his injury in the second half of the Jags’ game against the Tennessee Titans and it caused him to miss the Jags’ following game in London against the Miami Dolphins. In that game the Jags’ defense allowed 354 passing yards, so Jack’s absence didn’t really help them, though he’s registered a 49.5 figure in coverage himself.

As for the rest of the team, guard Ben Bartch (concussion) remained the lone full participant on the injury report, while defensive tackle Jay Tufele (hand) remained the lone player on the list to not participate in practice. On defense, Tyson Campbell and DaVon Hamilton remained limited. Center and guard Tyler Shatley remained limited, too, as did long snapper Ross Matiscik.

As for the Seattle Seahawks, their injury report update can be viewed here on Seahawks Wire.

Jaguars Week 8 injury report: DL Jay Tufele lone player to sit out of practice Wednesday

The Jags only had one DNP on their first injury report since the bye week.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their first injury report since coming off their bye, and it appears they are well on their way to entering Sunday’s game relatively healthy. The only player who didn’t practice was rookie defensive tackle Jay Tufele, who had hand surgery recently

Tufele was set to be active for his second game Week 6 and took the field for the team during pregame warmups against the Miami Dolphins, but injured his hand in the process and was held out of the game. Earlier this week Jags coach Urban Meyer said he had surgery and would be out for a few weeks.

The Jags had five others surface on the injury report as limited and one player who was a full participant in Ben Bartch, who sustained a concussion against the Dolphins. Among the limited players were starters Myles Jack (oblique) and Tyson Campbell (toe), who were missed in a big way in London against Miami, but are expected to be back against Seattle.

Jack sustained his injury Week 5 against the Tennessee Titans and stayed in Florida when the Jags flew to London. Campbell has been out since after the Jags Week 4 game against Cincinnati.

Joining the two players as limited participants were center and guard Tyler Shatley (groin), defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton (shoulder), and long snapper Ross Matiscik (hamstring).

As for the Seahawks’ injury report, the info on it can be viewed here on Seahawks Wire.
