Heaps: Seahawks may be interested in Jets safety Jamal Adams

Former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jake Heaps revealed that a source told him that the Seahawks are interested in Jets safety Jamal Adams.

710 ESPN Seattle radio host and former Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Jake Heaps, revealed on Thursday that the team may be interested in New York Jets safety Jamal Adams, who publicly requested a trade last month.

“I actually had a conversation with a friend of mine who works in a front office on the other side of the country for an NFL team, and we were talking and he actually said, ‘So your Seahawks are really into Jamal Adams,’” Heaps said on the Tom, Jake and Stacy Show.

“He said, yeah, the Seahawks are absolutely pursuing Jamal Adams,” Heaps continued. “… I think that trade conversations are heating up around Jamal Adams and that the Seahawks, in particular, are one of those teams that are continuing to pursue Jamal Adams.”

Heaps believes that Adams could provide stability to Seattle’s secondary it has not seen since the days of the Legion of Boom, comparing him to former Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor. The Jets will likely desire something big in return even if Adams wants a trade to happen, but he could be worth it.

“If the Seahawks are interested in Jamal Adams and he’s willing to play out at least for this season on his current deal, I think that that could be a really dynamic trade and a big boost for the Seahawks that could really take that defense and that defensive backfield back to that Legion of Boom type of status again,” Heaps said. “Because as much as we reminisce about Kam Chancellor, Jamal Adams is a generational talent at that position and plays very similarly to Kam.”

Whatever the cost may be, it is enticing to think of Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs as a tandem anchoring the secondary.

“…Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams as your safeties for the foreseeable future? That’s a dynamic combination right there.”

Seahawks players abundant on ESPN’s NFC West All-Decade Team

The Seattle Seahawks have numerous players on ESPN’s All-Decade Teams list for the 2010s, including Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner.

ESPN recently released their NFL All-Decade Teams of the 2010s for every division and the Seattle Seahawks feature abundantly in the NFC West edition.

Russell Wilson claimed the quarterback spot on the list, while Marshawn Lynch, Doug Baldwin, Max Unger, and Russell Okung rounded out the rest of Seattle’s offensive players of the decade.

The defensive side of the ball featured Bobby Wagner, Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor, all key contributors to the Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory in the 2013-14 season, while Tyler Lockett appeared on the special teams as a return specialist along with kicker Stephen Hauschka.

In addition, former Cardinal and current Seahawk Mike Iupati notched a spot on the list, making the total number of Seahawks on ESPN’s All-Decade list a resounding dozen.

The Seahawks had plenty of memorable moments in their most successful decade in franchise history and many great players that made them happen.

Wives of current, former Seahawks organize ‘Bridge to the Future’ walk

Wives of current and former Seattle Seahawks have organized a “‘Bridge to the Future” march across I-90 at 2:00 p.m. on June 13, 2020.

NFL players aren’t the only ones who are participating in marches around the country in protest of racial injustices, their wives are organizing events too.

“My wife and her friends are putting together a March for Solidarity & Justice! ” linebacker K.J. Wright posted on his Instagram account. “Join us this Saturday at 2 as we take the necessary steps towards making the future better for our children.”

Wright’s wife, Natalie, Tiffany Chancellor and other members of the Seahawks’ Women’s Association are coordinating the event.

The march is called the “Bridge to the Future” and will feature a walk from Mercer Island across the I-90 bridge in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The march kicks off at 2:00 p.m. PT from Aubrey Davis Park.

Kam Chancellor is a mentor for Seahawks safety Marquise Blair

Kam Chancellor has been seen working with Marquise Blair, a mentorship that should have huge benefits for the young Seattle safety.

If Seattle Seahawks fans were allowed to pick one former player to mentor one young player currently on the team, one of the most popular suggestions would be to have safety Kam Chancellor work with Marquise Blair, who is entering his second NFL season.

That wish has been granted, as multiple pictures of the two working together have surfaced in the last few days.

Chancellor was forced to medically retire following the 2017 season, and since then he has occasionally made appearances at practices, while also launching a line of men’s shoes and beginning a family with his wife.

It’s unclear if “Bam Bam” will ever get into coaching full-time, although it certainly seems to suit the 32-year-old, who made four Pro Bowls in his eight year career.

Blair joined the Seahawks in 2019, coming out of Utah as a rangey safety prospect who packed a punch – reminding fans of what they were missing with Chancellor’s sudden retirement.

Blair appeared in 14 games in his rookie season, starting three and recording 32 combined tackles, two forced fumbles and one pass defended. He ceded a starting role to Bradley McDougald and Quandre Diggs, who are each expected to start again in 2020.

However, Blair looks to have a bright future as a hard-hitting safety in the NFL, and learning from one of the best to ever do it can do nothing but help the youngster as he hopes to work his way into a big role in 2020.

Why Baylor safety Chris Miller could make the Seahawks roster

The Seahawks love aggressive, hard-hitting safeties, and while Chris Miller’s combine was not impressive, he could sneak onto the roster.

The Seattle Seahawks brought in a whopping 17 undrafted free agents from the 2020 class to compete for spots on the active roster.

Most years, teams are lucky to get one UDFA to make the squad, as they are primarily brought in to give the team extra bodies during training camp.

However, the Seahawks have had plenty of luck in the past, going all the way back to Dave Krieg and including Jermaine Kearse, Doug Baldwin and more recently, defensive tackle Poona Ford.

This years class is sure to have some intriguing players in it, and one who could stand out above the rest is former Baylor safety Chris Miller.

Miller received a $10,000 signing bonus from the Seahawks, a sign they were not the only team interested in the Baylor safety after the draft concluded.

Miller fits a lot of what coach Pete Carroll and his staff look for in their safeties. Namely, he brings a thumping, hard-hitting, aggressive (sometimes to a fault) mentality to the secondary that is reminiscent of Marquise Blair and even Kam Chancellor.

Miller was a second team All Big-12 selection his senior year, after getting honorable mentions in 2018. He had a career-high 76 combined tackles with two forced fumbles and two passes defended in 2019, although his aggression caused him to miss 1.5 games thanks to targeting calls that earned him two suspensions.

The Seahawks will love his aggression, but his poor testing at the combine (4.61 in the 40-yard dash, 29.8 inch arms, 12 reps on the bench press) likely contributed to his fall out of the draft, and could limit his ability to make the team over Lano Hill, the teams presumed backup safety.

Miller is the kind of guy the Seahawks would normally take a flyer on if he performs well in camp, but with the potential for a limited camp this year it’s harder to see his path to a spot on the active roster.

A spot on the expanded practice squad, however, makes a lot of sense if the Seahawks believe he can hone in his aggression on the field at the next level.

Should the Seahawks Legion of Boom have their own ‘Last Dance?’

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports lists nine NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, who deserve their own “Last Dance” treatment.

ESPN’s incredibly popular series “The Last Dance” wrapped up Sunday night and left sports fans everywhere hungry for more. Although the show centered around Michael Jordan and his Chicago Bulls, there are a number of equally intriguing stories surrounding NFL players and teams.

USA TODAY’s Nate Davis took a look at nine NFL teams throughout history that deserve “The Last Dance” treatment and the 2017 Seattle Seahawks landed at No. 3 on his list.

“The final time CB Richard Sherman, S Kam Chancellor and DL Michael Bennett would play for Seattle, it was effectively the ‘Legion of Boom’s’ swan song,” Davis writes. “And there are stories to be told, from the transition of a team that had been reliant on its defense to one that depended on QB Russell Wilson . . .  not to mention latent feelings from the Seahawks’ infamous Super Bowl XLIX loss to New England, one that aborted any dynastic aspirations in the Pacific Northwest.

“Sherman always teems with unvarnished honesty, but this truly becomes must-see TV if RB Marshawn Lynch opts to opine in any meaningful manner.”

Davis noted that the Seahawks “Legion of Boom” story sits atop his own personal list, finally giving Seattle fans something they agree with.

Kam Chancellor, Duane Brown on PFF’s Top-101 players of the decade

Chancellor and Brown were joined by former Seattle Seahawks Brandon Marshall and Michael Bennett on PFF’s top-101 players of the decade.

Pro Football Focus has now released half of their top-101 players of the last decade, and six Seattle Seahawks have already found themselves represented.

Numbers 75-101 were released on Monday, with Doug Baldwin and Greg Olsen coming in at 77 and 81, respectively. Now, 50-74 have been released and four more Seahawks – Kam Chancellor, Duane Brown, Brandon Marshall and Michael Bennett – have been named to the list.

At No. 55, Chancellor is the first member of Seattle’s famed Legion of Boom to make the list, although Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas are certainly going to be on it as well. His career was cut short by injuries, but Bam Bam brought the boom as a hard-hitting strong safety, and was a four-time Pro Bowler.

The Seahawks pulled off a midseason trade in 2017 to acquire Brown from the Texans, and although he did most of his work in Houston he has been an excellent addition to Seattle’s offensive line as a veteran team leader and a stout run blocker at the left tackle spot, certainly helping to earn him his spot on this list at No. 58 overall.

Marshall spent a half season with the Seahawks in 2018 before getting released, but his leadership during training camp did not go unnoticed. A stellar career with the Bears and Broncos prior to that is what nets him a spot on this list at No. 61 overall.

Bennett comes in at No. 74 after a stellar career in Tampa Bay and Seattle and then a few scattered years with Dallas, Philadelphia and New England. Now a free agent, Bennett recorded 6.5 sacks last year and still has enough juice to help a team in need of some pass rush even in his age 35 season.

Doug Baldwin No. 77 on PFF’s Top-101 players of the decade

Pro Football Focus is ranking the top 101 players from the last decade, and Seattle Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin is No. 77 overall.

Pro Football Focus decided to go above and beyond their recent all-decade team release, and is now ranking the top-101 players from the last decade.

Numbers 75-101 were released on Monday morning, and former Seattle Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin made the list at No. 77 overall.

Greg Olsen, who signed with the Seahawks back in February, is on the list ast well at No. 81.

Baldwin cracks the list just behind Dez Bryant and ahead of fellow wideouts Keenan Allen, Emmanuel Sanders and Odell Beckham, Jr.

Baldwin is perhaps the best undrafted free agent in franchise history, joining the team in 2011 and putting together an extremely stellar eight-year career that was unfortunately cut short after the 2019 season due to injuries.

Baldwin was a two-time Pro Bowler and led the league in touchdown receptions in 2015, cementing himself as one of the most reliable pass catchers in the game and challenging the prototype that No. 1 receivers couldn’t also be smaller, slot guys.

Baldwin will be the first of many Seahawks on the top-101 list, which will likely also include Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson, as well as each member of the Legion of Boom: Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor.

Seahawks players use social media to celebrate Mother’s Day

Seattle Seahawks current and former players took to Twitter to wish a happy Mother’s Day to their moms and wives on Sunday.

Mother’s Day celebrations will no doubt be impacted heavily this year, with social distancing practices still in place around the United States – which of course limits people’s ability to see their parents.

That of course won’t stop people from celebrating, however, and social media will continue to be a prominent way for people to share their feelings about their own moms and the other moms in their life.

The Seattle Seahawks, as well as many current and former players, have already begun sharing pictures and stories on Twitter, in light of the holiday.

Many players used the platform to send love to their own moms, while a handful of others celebrated their wives, a few who are celebrating their first Mother’s Day as a new mom.

In light of this pandemic’s impact on social gatherings, we here at Seahawks Wire hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday and is able to celebrate with the moms in their life in some capacity while we wait for a return to normalcy in the (hopefully) near future.

3 Seahawks among top-32 draft picks of the last 20 years

Robert Mays of The Ringer ranked the most valuable draft picks of the last 20 years, and three Seattle Seahawks made the top 14.

The 2020 NFL draft is coming up, and amidst all the mock drafts, the speculation about trades, and the discussion about the virtual nature of this year’s event comes some historical perspective.

Robert Mays of The Ringer decided to rank the 32 most valuable draft picks in the past 20 years – and the Seattle Seahawks had three of their selections crack the list, all within the top-14.

Coming in at No. 14 is Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner, who was taken 47th overall in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Wagner has been an All-Pro first or second teamer in each of the past six seasons, and has cemented himself among the best linebackers of his generation. At age 29 and under contract through 2022, Wagner could easily complete a Hall of Fame career all in the Emerald City – and anytime you can get a player like that outside the first round you will take it.

No. 7 on the list is cornerback Richard Sherman, who Seattle selected in the fifth round, No. 154 overall, in the 2011 draft.

“Ten (!) defensive players from that draft have been voted first-team All Pro at least once,” Mays wrote. “The average draft position of the other nine was around 19th overall. That means that the gap in value between Sherman and the average All-Pro defender from the 2011 class equals out to about the 27th pick in the draft. So you could pick one of those guys at random—or you could have Richard Sherman and another first-round pick.”

Finally, the second most valuable draft selection of the last 20 years goes to Russell Wilson, who was taken 76th overall in 2012.

“Since Joe Montana, no quarterback drafted in the third round or later has made the Hall of Fame,” Mays wrote. “If Wilson continues on his current trajectory, he and [Tom] Brady will be the first ones to do it.”

Amazingly, one could argue the Seahawks could have had even more players on this list, including Kam Chancellor (133rd overall in 2010) or K.J. Wright (99th overall in 2010) who also returned amazing value for their draft slot.

John Schneider will look to work his magic again this week, with the 2020 virtual NFL draft set to begin on Thursday, April 23.
